That's why I dislike the modern push start buttons, you have to go to the dealer to get replacement key fobs, they are expensive, and you can't even turn the car off manually !!!
I'd rather that CR not perpetuate what is mostly a matter of simple driver error rather than "sudden acceleration." There was nothing wrong with Toyota products recently, just as there was nothing wrong with Audis back in the late 1980s. Just people who stepped on the gas, thinking it was the brake, or who put floor mats in that were so big and poorly fitted that they pushed on the gas pedal. For anyone who can't even find neutral, I guess they deserve it. Who can't find neutral???
@omar7002 ABS prevents your brakes from locking when you slam them hard because they tend to lock and cause you to skid and instead of stopping you slide off. so abs stops the slide. it does not work when you push the gas at the same time and run your engine while you brake
How hard should it be to find neutral P R N D 3 2 1. The N represents Neutral. its that easy. If u cant find it them you shouldn't be a driver!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you can shift your car every morning, from Park to Drive or Reverse, you can jolly damn well know where the fuck and how the fuck to shift into Neutral! But besides the point, the guy is right. Most people would be like "Well won't it hurt the engine to shift into Neutral and let it bang off the rev limiter?" I always say "Would you rather lose a car, or lose a life?"
I have to say, this video saved me and my moms life. This weekend our Buick shot up to 80 MPH because the accelerator got stuck in a floor mat. If I didn't know to shift it into neutral, the curve that was .3 miles ahead in the road, would have killed us.
With a manual car you should be able to stop it just by braking. In an automatic, (especially if your engine is powerful and the brakes are crap) it changes down the gears and generates more torque which is harder to brake against.
If you can't find neutral you shouldn't even be on the road. And this can happen in ANY vehicle. You just need to know what to do in the event of it happening. The Accelerator part Toyota had recalled which was never an *identifiable* recall was made in the US. as well.
First of All...I love my decision of buying a manual car.
Second. For automatic cars, put it in the slot marked "N" if you ever wondered what that was, its called neutral. Once you do that the car will rev to its max but it won't accelerate and then you stomp on the brakes.
Gerry and I discussed how a lot of people have not every used neutral. Showing our age for those of us who learned on a standard transmission?! Anyway - thought some of you might like to see this one.
I have never seen an automatic transmission with the shifter either on the column or the floor that wouldn't go into neutral by simply smacking the lever toward park. It will instantly go right into neutral and stop there without messing with any knob buttons or such. The passenger can do it if need be just as easily. That's been a safety feature of automatic transmission shifters for as long as I can remember.
Toyota would be crazy to build cars without that simple, tested safety feature.
Hey guys what kind of hydraulic brakes fail when the engine is shut off ?????
All that fails is the assist -- on both brakes and steering ---- All these guys must of just learned to drive last week--- In the seventies all these power options were just that extras ---- and the old brakes were non assisted drums ----- Now these dolts loose assist and drive into trees --- OH My Oh My where's my neutral -------- your probably sitting on it stupid .

@kanehi -- What you do then is quickly apply for a patent --- you are now driving a perpetual motion machine ------Just goes to show some people should only drive Donkeys------ make that ride-with a carrot at the end ----
Going faster in neutral ---- give your pathetic brain a shake.
The only reason Toyota apologized is because they wanted to seem understanding in public opinion and not adversarial .What a bunch of utter crap.
Not entirely common sense. There are reports to where the pedal will get "stuck" but it will rebound back to it's starting position. This could be a problem with the switches and the electronic computer system that governs the vehicle's acceleration and fuel system. For all we know it could be a fault in the injectors that causes them to stay fully pressurized thus constantly dumping fuel into the engine.
How is this US Propaganda? This has been reported in toyota vehicles world-wide; even in their home country Japan. This is a very helpful video to those viewers who are not as vehicle-savvy as some of us. To further on the info, Neutral disengages the drive shafts (Or gravity-Shafts in FWD vehicles) mechanically, and reverts the engine to running without engaging the drivetrain of the vehicle. This will allow for brake pressure to stop the vehicle.
Thank you very much for the informative demonstration. Consumer report is for the people.
Regarding my Toyota, it is approaching 100 Kmi with nothing more than routine maintanance.
No more GM engine fire as the dealer attempt to deliver the car back to me after service! Then attempted to charge me for the engine fire reparts even with the car under warranty!
consumer reports is paid by advertisers. Consumer reports was pushing Toyotas as being the best cars out there eventhough they are POS. They even don't test the cars, like car and driver.
You never see any european car being highly rated in their magazine.
Ok, first, the video says the car has a problem stopping by just applying the brake, but it cuts off while the car is still decelerating at a fairly rapid pace
Second, how hard is it to find neutral? I mean, really? come on. just push the damn shift lever up one notch, and ta daaaaa! NEUTRAL!
Finally, yes, toyota should have put in the brake override, but a C/D test showed that there is a 16 foot difference in braking difference from 70-0 in a V6 Toyota Camry.
on the Jetta, when you override the gas by stpping on the brakes, does that damage the fuel pump? Not that it matters at that point but I'm just curious.
Lexas owner before congress said would not shift into other gears, neutral or park. Trannies are prevented from doing that with software. The old days you had mechanical control.
P.s., the 'repaired' Toyota's are still generating complaints. Seems like a full engineering review is indicated.
Whoever said their car kept going forward even after they shifted their transmission into reverse or neutral is full of shit. That's not how cars work, even Toyota's.

Toyota has ignored quality for far too long, the sludging in their v6, failing ball joints on their trucks, transmission failures, and now brake and accelerator issues. Toyota forgot the customer and forgot the quality. Fanboys can defend Toyota all they want but the truth is that their best engines and designes are in the distant past.
Toyota has issued statements regarding the fact that the floormat is not entirely to blame, the pedal itself can get stuck when it comes into contact with moisture. Until you have the recall repairs performed, don't be an idiot and push the accelerator to a point where it would be unsafe if it DID get stuck... Hello people!!! COMMON SENSE!!
Most people turn their cars off multiple times a day. Why wouldn't anyone not know how to turn it off during an emergency. Where the transmission on an auto tranny has to be in park before the key will go into the lock position little chance of locking the steering wheel except for a manual tranny I guess.
Yeah, finding the Neutral on your car is really difficult :)) This is very hard for Americans. What about manual transmission then. How would you cope with that?
Clutch --> neutral, the only real operating difference between a manual and an automatic transmission is that an automatic does the clutch step, if you will, and shifts gears for you.
@jijitzu you press and hold the clutch to disengage the engine from the tranny (just like putting it into neutral) then do the same as in the automatic. The best way to prevent this is don't drive a Toyota...
@jijitzu Most Americans don't have the problem of sudden acceleration, Well with American built cars any how.
I have three American built cars two of them have over 200,000 miles on them...never been in the shop yet, not once.
My neighbor has two Toyotas they have been in the shop at least 4 times in the last 3 years for major repair and they don't even have 80,000 miles on them yet.. heh go figure
@Greenmarine6 Agree American made cars are a lot more solid then garbage Japanese toyotas. Lexus used to be American then toyota took them over and they became japaneese and now lexus suck so much there the same shit quality as the toyota line now.
I guess this wouldn't be important if Steve Wozniak hadn't found out about it.... the common user would probably be mocked if they had found this problem.
by other German makes he mean VW and Audi, they use common components, as well as some Porsches. Not necessarily BMW, but they may have similar setups.
AMEN to that! :) Though, people are SERIOUSLY blowing this whole thing out of proportion. There is no need to rush out and sell your Lexus and Toyota, just don't be an idiot and mash the accelerator to the floor! (as the cars affected aren't designed for that purpose :) )
My first thought when hearing of all these Toyota problems was I'd jam the thing into Park and let the transmission self-destruct. That would've worked on the cars I grew up with (just hold some button on the shifter & move it), but it's been a long time since I've driven an automatic. Can you still do that with today's cars?
Modern cars prevent you from shifting into park when you are driving. Shifting into neutral will allow you to stop the car and save you from rebuilding the transmission. The rev limiter will keep you from doing too much damage as long as you pull over within a few minutes.
hopefully you'll pull over sooner than a few minutes! :P Not all modern cars, in my experience, totally prevent you from shifting into park at speed. More cheaply-made cars such as the Scion tC have nothing but the jagged shift gate keeping you from going above N. I had to quickly shift out of R when I accidentally went too high on the shift gate. Many Mercury Tracers/Ford Escorts don't even need a key to shift out of P...(older yes, but more easily considered modern than say a Dodge Dart)
If you don't press the button that you do to get it out of park (if your car has that), then you just push it forward and it locks automatically in neutral. It may go back to drive without pressing the button, but won't go to R or P. Mythbusters actually took an old Crown Victoria and discovered that that particular car didn't do anything when the shifter was put into park at speed.
The lesson of this video is...DON'T buy a Toyota until this problem is fully resolved. If ever.
There should NEVER be a situation with your car where the throttle is overriding the brake, period.
This isn't just a problem with the floor mats or carpeting...this is actually a HUGE glitch in the ECU's (car computer's) logic system. Toyota was sloppy in their programming, and now it's costing people's lives.
Stay away or risk your family's lives...your choice.
Crappy American drivers are making Americans into kamikaze drivers. NYC recently enacted a law forbidding cab drivers from using electronics of any kind. I don't disagree and it should be implemented on every driver nationwide. When you are driving a ton and a half your focus should be on the road & not the latest text you received.
Not every "moron" knows what to do in this situation but they can be taught. THEY SHOULD BE TAUGHT
Now before the children start chiming in, I understand the woman involved in the accident was an adult. I can guarantee you she learned how to drive when she was a teenager. We (as Americans) get taught the basics when we're teens, the rest is often left to chance. We figure out as we go along.
Driving tests in the US never touch on emergency situations. Who am I going to kill while parallel parking? How much damage can I due while executing a K-turn? These issues are covered, but what about a car you've lost control over? Let's not talk about that. We teach teenagers to get from point A to point B "in a perfect world," we don't even attempt to teach them about the physics of driving. Which is somethings these kids put to the test all of time.
I am from the a very metropolitan are of the US, and I have also had the opportunity to drive in 4 different continents. I have to admit no matter what side of the road people drive AMERICANS ARE THE WORST DRIVERS!!!! The fact that someone has to explain to us to throw an out of control car in neutral is proof. Toyota has some issues at the moment, but these issues should be at the forefront of any driver licensing agency in AMERICA.
People don't buy American cars because they are, at least until now, much more costly to own and repair over the vehicle's lifetime than totaling say 10 better-made Japanese cars.
There is one problem with some Toyota and Lexus gear shift designs which Jake does not mention here. Drive and park are gears that are situated on horizontal notches away from the main vertical channel. I guess that design was incorporated to minimize accidental shifts into an adverse gear, but this design may also prevent you from shifting to neutral while the engine is running away.
If you aren't dabby and ridiculously panicking and slap the shifter around, you won't have a problem shifting into neutral. Simply slide the shifter up/vertically.
35 years ago I was driving a VW Golf, the accelerator cable snapped and the car goes full speed, I did not need then a video to learn how to stop a car (manual shift or not). We have also dumb people in Europe, like this french guy in his Renault Velsatis who call emergency with his cell phone because his car is blocked at the speed of 110 miles an hour on the highway. (It was a malfunction of the onboard computer.) Not a cop... but still unaware that YES WE CAN stop a car that goes crazy.
yeah i was driving an old truck in my yard to put the plow on. i was turning it around and going up a hil so i accelerated. the throttle stuck so i just turned off the car.. it works.
its now hard to find netural look for a big N on the gear shifter dumbass oh n by the way if u cant steer the car without power steering then u shouldnt really be driving its not that hard to control without power steering bedsides toyota n honda uses electric steering which is was worse then power steering
Lol it's hard to drive the vehicle when the engine is off without power steering? Cars used to be sold without power steering at all. This guy must be born like 5 years ago or something.
yes, and back then you didn´t have to go through a huge hydraulic system. That´s what makes it so hard to steer. A switched off power steering is way harder than none at all
This has happened to my dad twice in the freeway in his 08 Mustang. He took it to Ford and they scanned the ECU and there were no recorded problems. It wasn't the pedal getting stuck on the floor mat. They didn't know what it was.
I think this is in response to that horrible accident that a family in California was killed in back in July or August 2009 because according to the investigation, the accelerator in their Lexus got stuck in the floor mat and they couldn't get it free, ending up traveling 125 mph on city streets before the collision. Lexus and Toyota issued massive recalls as a result of this. But a recent report by ABC News suggests that there might be even more to it than that. Google it for more information.
@swisstrucker I agree those people who died in that lexus were morons, everyone knows to shift the car into neutral....... turn the car off, shit, destroy the transmission and put it into neutral. Althougth toyota is to blame sometimes people should think better
I believe this video is in response to the fatal accident that was caused by the accelerator getting pinned under the floor mat. I think Toyota has a few models that have loose-fitting floor mats.
Could it be because you're pressing on both the brake and the accelerator pedal? They're so close together, that it's easy to do.

@Greenmarine6 Agree American made cars are a lot more solid then garbage Japanese toyotas. Lexus used to be American then toyota took them over and they became japaneese and now lexus suck so much there the same shit quality as the toyota line now.
getnhigh247 1 year ago
@jijitzu You are so right. The ironic thing is that americans say themselves that they don't know how to slow down a car!
MyCoolMac 9 months ago
@jijitzu I don't have that issue, or many I know, some dummies don't pay attention.
Drewbie85 9 months ago
@jijitzu If you are driving a manual then neutral is just pulling it out of gear. Easy. At least that is how it is for me here in the USA

volkswagen, audi and porsche have the system described at the end because they use common components. bmw my not.
SpeedyCheeze 2 years ago
what about emergency brake/hand brake/parking brake?
SpeedyCheeze 2 years ago
I guess this wouldn't be important if Steve Wozniak hadn't found out about it.... the common user would probably be mocked if they had found this problem.

Thank God I drive a BMW.
csihardfan111 2 years ago
by other German makes he mean VW and Audi, they use common components, as well as some Porsches. Not necessarily BMW, but they may have similar setups.

vw, audi, and porsche have the system at the end of the video because they share common parts. bmw might, too.

Can you still do that with today's cars?
yaafm8 2 years ago
Modern cars prevent you from shifting into park when you are driving. Shifting into neutral will allow you to stop the car and save you from rebuilding the transmission. The rev limiter will keep you from doing too much damage as long as you pull over within a few minutes.
mysticx401 2 years ago
hopefully you'll pull over sooner than a few minutes! :P Not all modern cars, in my experience, totally prevent you from shifting into park at speed. More cheaply-made cars such as the Scion tC have nothing but the jagged shift gate keeping you from going above N. I had to quickly shift out of R when I accidentally went too high on the shift gate. Many Mercury Tracers/Ford Escorts don't even need a key to shift out of P...(older yes, but more easily considered modern than say a Dodge Dart)
ar9080 2 years ago

THEY SHOULD BE TAUGHT
blkspic 2 years ago
Now before the children start chiming in, I understand the woman involved in the accident was an adult. I can guarantee you she learned how to drive when she was a teenager. We (as Americans) get taught the basics when we're teens, the rest is often left to chance. We figure out as we go along.
blkspic 2 years ago
Driving tests in the US never touch on emergency situations. Who am I going to kill while parallel parking? How much damage can I due while executing a K-turn? These issues are covered, but what about a car you've lost control over? Let's not talk about that. We teach teenagers to get from point A to point B "in a perfect world," we don't even attempt to teach them about the physics of driving. Which is somethings these kids put to the test all of time.
blkspic 2 years ago
I am from the a very metropolitan are of the US, and I have also had the opportunity to drive in 4 different continents. I have to admit no matter what side of the road people drive AMERICANS ARE THE WORST DRIVERS!!!! The fact that someone has to explain to us to throw an out of control car in neutral is proof. Toyota has some issues at the moment, but these issues should be at the forefront of any driver licensing agency in AMERICA.

wow, last part of vid is awesome
kaycheops 2 years ago
That's what happen when people don't buy American . Toyota its turning American drivers in to kamikaze pilots .
punmaxxrcfx 2 years ago
People don't buy American cars because they are, at least until now, much more costly to own and repair over the vehicle's lifetime than totaling say 10 better-made Japanese cars.

There is one problem with some Toyota and Lexus gear shift designs which Jake does not mention here. Drive and park are gears that are situated on horizontal notches away from the main vertical channel. I guess that design was incorporated to minimize accidental shifts into an adverse gear, but this design may also prevent you from shifting to neutral while the engine is running away.
hwyfan 2 years ago

You've got a G/Primera, even though it's an I4, it was meant to be at least sporty-ish, Nissan wouldn't pull that sticky accelerator crap.

@PrimeraG20 manual transmission FTW indeed!!!11 kick clutch and brake ;)

Lol it's hard to drive the vehicle when the engine is off without power steering? Cars used to be sold without power steering at all. This guy must be born like 5 years ago or something.
gooey41 2 years ago
Some cars lock the steering wheel. It's a security feature.
marktech101 2 years ago
yes, and back then you didn´t have to go through a huge hydraulic system. That´s what makes it so hard to steer. A switched off power steering is way harder than none at all
Phunker1 2 years ago
This has happened to my dad twice in the freeway in his 08 Mustang. He took it to Ford and they scanned the ECU and there were no recorded problems. It wasn't the pedal getting stuck on the floor mat. They didn't know what it was.

MrGermancarlover 2 years ago 5
It was interesting how you explained that. The most important is really to cut the power. (put in neutral or hit the clutch).
But did a lot of cars sudden accelerate? I hardly never heard about it.
swisstrucker 2 years ago
I think this is in response to that horrible accident that a family in California was killed in back in July or August 2009 because according to the investigation, the accelerator in their Lexus got stuck in the floor mat and they couldn't get it free, ending up traveling 125 mph on city streets before the collision. Lexus and Toyota issued massive recalls as a result of this. But a recent report by ABC News suggests that there might be even more to it than that. Google it for more information.
ricepaddy69 2 years ago
@swisstrucker I agree those people who died in that lexus were morons, everyone knows to shift the car into neutral....... turn the car off, shit, destroy the transmission and put it into neutral. Althougth toyota is to blame sometimes people should think better
BrandyKluxKlan 2 years ago 2
yeah and one of those in the lexus was a cop
harrychronikjr 2 years ago
I believe this video is in response to the fatal accident that was caused by the accelerator getting pinned under the floor mat. I think Toyota has a few models that have loose-fitting floor mats.
