I've always admired JDF's voice. It's always entertaining to hear and he possesses such a beautiful tone. With a doubt, one of my favorites of today's era.
He seems well supported - tenor singing is not (just) about being very LOUD and an ability to demolish walls and other brick work. The important thing of course is to support the voice and sing the notes (and add ones own) - he does do this. Just because he doesn't sing it like Del Monaco on steroids does not make him wrong.
@primohomme Florez does use the tenore di grazia technique to use mixed falsetto which is a combination of chest and falsetto at the same time, usually when he sings piano :)
I'm hearing now falsetto so far. His voice is clean and pure head voice. It takes years of practice or just God-given talent to be able to sing like this :)
@joshuajacobtaylor he is a Leggiero tenor these tenors get confused with lyric tenors but they have a few distinct qualities like their abilities to go beyond a High D
@carrieslilsis listen to Paul Esswood, Alfred Deller, Spanos and many more first. Then listen to Alfredo Kraus, Juan Diego Florez, Gigli and Pavarotti and lastly Jonas Kaufmann. Some will say Florez is a light lyrical tenor, Pavarotti a high lyrical tenor and Kaufmann a dramatic tenor. listen to Florez again and then Spanos - i think you will be able to hear the difference more clearly. Tenors will use a mix of falsetto and head voice when they sing the highest notes.
@carrieslilsis Some tenors mix falsetto and head voice when they sing very high notes, they even shriek forcefully (like me!!!) and damage their voices - the trick is not to shriek like a parrot in a mouse trap!!!
Florez has such a clean high head voice he does not need to use tricks to sing high! He is just so good!!!
when I listen to him singing so very chrystal clearly like mountain water it gives me goosebumps.
Well, singing in mixed voice is good technique ;) and the way composers from that era intended that the tenors sang their high notes ;) dragging chest voice so high is entirely a modern thing
@neelsdp1 The majority of tenors use mix voice for hign notes. Plena voce is just a myth... That's what covering is for... The vocal fold rests, only by mixing a bit with falsetto.
@carrieslilsis No he is actually Light Lyric or Lirico-Leggiero or just plain Leggiero Tenor. This means that he is the equivalent to a coloratura soprano when speaking about the male voice. You probably find his voice type/fach in pieces written by Rossini(especially he loved light agile voices) Donizetti, Mozart..bt especially in Baroque period solo voice music.
@carrieslilsis In other words, he's not a countertenor. He is what is commonly called a leggiero tenor, meaning that he has a lighter voice, as compared to Pavarotti who was a Lyric tenor or Placido Domingo who is a Heroic/Dramatic Tenor. Leggiero Tenors have superb brilliance in their higher register, while the lower notes aren't as brilliant or strong but nonetheless beautiful. His registers are perfectly integrated and he is a master of coloratura and of the bel canto repertoir. Too much? lol
I totally disagree with you. Florez has incredible vocal technics. Check out "Pour mon ame" on youtube, and see if you still mean he don't have a good technic.
Ive just seen lisa Bustos and I was impressed, but you can't say that she is better than Florez. They are 2 different singers and it will be a mistake to compare them against each other. Thats my opinion though..
@oeljeck ,I respect your opinion, but I still think he is more famous than good singer. He has the high notes and is an expressive singer, just that. I prefer Giuseppe Sabbatini singing "Ah mes ami...Pour mon ame"
@oeljeck i fully agree. and to compare singers, especially good ones in their own right, is like comparing different cultivars of wine...they can be excellent AND taste different...and taste is so very subjective...another danger is to just listen to one favorite singer...the ear does not develop enough to be able to enjoy and appreciate differences. Drinking just one wine gives you cellar palate! You loose the art of discrimination and perceiving unique differences! Variety is the spice of ...
@Timotheus9 ,He can sing up to the pope, just take the high notes and an excellent businessman and he should have. To me he still has a technical worse than his fame.
I sang this for my All State, and it was a Level 5....make sure you practice your breathing if you're considering this, a lot of the notes are carried from one to the other..one breath. I think it's ironic that the lyrics say, "I finally breahe"..haha
How beautifully has he softened the timbre of his usually very bright voice for this number! His is one of the very best examples of this interesting and wonderful song.
@moo7chi7ld probably because it's quite low in his range, Remember that Florez is a leggiero... Anyway, he does sing it nicely. Also try Ramon Vargas's version.
THis is the song I wanna do for my All State Audition Next Year ( Sadly my last All State Audition ) ( Gladdly I have made it every year except my first try ), but anyways. I can't find it in this key, and I can sing the lower key fine, but I like this key the best.
Whoa! I have to sing this for vocal fest and now I'm totally nervous because I've never spoken Italian before or dont something like this. AHHH. I could never measure up to his voice haha
Don't be very nervous about it! Remember to keep breathing, and work with someone to get your Italian pronunciation down! I myself am working on singing this song for Solo-Ensemble with my School, in the Tenor Key, (Since I'm first tenor.). I know what you're talking about, though.
And of course, you shouldn't be expecting to match up to his voice, he has a much different tone than I've ever even HEARD. You should be focused on working to the best of your abilities to just hammer in those notes well, and using your talent to the best of your ability.
