Death panels, the fear that the government was going to takeover the healthcare industry and outlaw private plans, euthanasia, the idea that healthcare would be provided on some kind of "productive citizen" metric. A lot of public confusion and fear was created by those who seek to profit off of it. In the end it got turned into something nearly identical to the GOP's counter-proposal to Bill Clinton's healthcare push.

As for outlawing private plans, no - individual health insurance will not be outlawed. But as the bill was written, it private plans would be effectively regulated out of existence after competing with the public option, which is effectively the same thing.
One minute I'm hearing that government healthcare is of absolute terrible quality, yet it will still drive private options out of business if they had to compete. Which is ridiculous. Has government postal service driven UPS out of business? Has public transportation marked the end of the automobile companies? No, yet a low-cost low-quality public option for these things is still provided because they're considered vital functions to living a productive life.

Redistribution isn't inherently unconstitutional. Taxation is redistributive, the general welfare clause is redistributive. But since its the job of the Supreme Court to identify and strike down any unconstitutional legislation, its surprising that they haven't done anything, isn't it?

@11111110 Well, I wouldn't be so quick to call it "nothing". "Death panels" may not be the right (or appropriate) term, but the notion is being discussed currently, referred to much more pleasantly as "End of life counseling".
As for outlawing private plans, no - individual health insurance will not be outlawed. But as the bill was written, it private plans would be effectively regulated out of existence after competing with the public option, which is effectively the same thing.

Determining which treatments are “cost effective” at the end of a person’s life is something that private insurance companies do every day. Obviously, they aren't in the business of giving everyone free unlimited healthcare. Neither is the government.
I mean it would be nice if government-provided healthcare was an infinite resource of money, but it isn't. Still, paying for some treatment for people who otherwise couldn't afford any is better than none at all.

@11111110 government can violate civil rights in extreme circumstances...people understood this before the bill was passed. people may not have understood it but its creator wasn't suggesting that they weren't ALLOWED to know what was in it...that is why Pelosi is an idiot for saying this.

But the people WERE allowed to see what was in the healthcare bill. Pelosi could stand on the podium and outright say "The contents of the bill are off-limits for public viewing", that wouldn't change the transparency status of any bill.
Maybe she was stupid for saying this, for not anticipating the sort of misguided backlash that hyperpartisians could bring from it, thanks to the magic of video editing technology
