Awesome. The touching and face-to-face interaction are (in technical terms, I guess) a high bandwidth, out-of-band control channel to allow low latency.
You'll notice that most "distributed" syncs, anything without a drummer or a conductor to force the sync, are plagued by slowdowns. This and other inuit vids just keep on nailing the pace. Nice!
this is wonderful! I had just one question, I've noticed that the singers embrace and sway as they sing, even in a few other videos that i've viewed on Inuit throat singing is that symbolizing anything? Is there a meaning as to why they do it?
We hold on to each others arms and sway back and forth because it helps keep the rhythm of the sounds we make. It's also a connection between the two who are throat-singing, it helps to be close and looking into each others eyes in order to get the sounds at the exact right times to go together for the game to work. It takes a lot of practice and it is very fun!! :)
So sad these videos do not render justice to the songs. Hard to explain but when you are there and you hear the real thing there is a ''third dimension'' that is lost by cheap recording. I'm not in this field of activity but I think someone with knowledge of binaural audio technology could do something to preserve these songs for the future generations .
we are close because we are both making the same sound but at different times, so we have to pay very close attention to when the opposite person is making their sound so we can follow at the exact right time to make the song work.
also because you arte taking in ver little air and alot is going out, so it is very very vyer easy to pass out, thats whey they are holding on to each other and thus, why the are close.
My best friend, a Native American and art teacher, introduced me to this video through the Eideljorg museum for Native American arts and life in Indianapolis, IN. I was awestruck. How hauntingly beautiful....so intimate, so primordial. It put tears in my eyes and my heart into my throat. When I later showed this piece to my husband we both were completely mezmorized. We stood breathless. It struck us to the core ...........
Kay...good...but why do they always laugh when they finish off, or mid song? What's up with that?! And are they singing actual words? I don't understand! I've heard the Inuit language, it's very hard to speak, i've tried repeating after hearing it, all from the throat kinda...so are these actual words in the Inuit language? Just curious.
Throat Singing was most commonly done by women as a friendly competition. It is done by imitating sounds of animals and other sounds from the Arctic environment. The competition is to see who can go longer without making a mistake and it ends with laughter to show a mistake was made and that one or the other has lost the game.
The throat songs imitate the sounds of: The Saw, Geese, Seagulls, the River, Mosquitos the Wind and many other sounds. There are also many competition songs, that are meant to see who can trick the other person first by changing the rhythm or adding different sounds.
The same songs are in Northern Siberia - the Folks near Northern Ocean sings like this..

It kind of sounds like a pack of wolves, too. The more airy noises sound like someone breathing hard while trying to run from the wolves. heh
dunno lol
