This production is from Covent Garden. I have it on VHS tape. You might check the Royal Opera website site and see if they sell a DVD version now. It is a very beautiful production.
Marvelous...perfect. I love Tales of Hoffman and this looks like a great production (never seen it) is it on DVD ? What is this from ? I love Placido Domingo and Agnes Baltsa. How sexy Domingo looks here! And the set and costumes look period perfect! Offenbach would be proud
I agree, Barneswriter. Each of us has his/her own favorite, accomplished artists. Their performances, though, can't be so widely divergent from the others as would justify the vitriol that permeates so many critiques offered here.
. . . and for me it's the best video of the opera available; moreover, for me it is Agnes Baltsa's voice that keeps me coming back to listen time after time to the chorus of singers in this sextet.
Honestly, I wish that Nicklausse's part had been a little more prominent. She has the only moving lead part at times, and all I heard was the fact that the orchestra was playing her part. (It's a role that's close to my heart. I've played it myself. In our production, the director had Nicklausse be just as loud any of the other leads, and it added a really interesting dynamic.)
Maybe I'm weird, but I think Domingo sounded better as he got older (like, late 90s).
I happen to love the stagging for this sextet in the dvd with Bryn Terfel (even though it's a weird production and Bryn isn't bass-y enough for the role). It has him positioning the other characters, so they are forced to "play roles"
I think Agnes is way underrated. She's totally awesome. She really can cut through the other voices, which is important on a septet like this where her line is important and often unheard when performed by other singers. I think mezzos are maybe better at this role than sopranos.
In the words of my opera teacher. They are all good it depends on what you like. Otherwise it would be boring to have the same voice type all the time.
This is my alltime favorite opera! This production is totally awesome: wonderful cast, glorious costuming, fabulous sets, great acting and singing! See the entire production, you will not be disappointed!
Yes, Joan Sutherland has the impeccable vocal technique and range but she severely lacks Baltsa's 'Bite' and passionate interpretation. I guess that's the difference between opera and singing. I also greatly admire Sutherland's art but in a different way; she cuts a fine figure on stage but her acting (physically and vocally) is in a different league to Baltsa.
Great!

I agree with the comparisons of Joan and Agnes. While I love Joan, I think Agnes is better as a Giuletta...Eb not withstanding....
