Frankie Howerd R.I.P. was one of Britain's best stand-up comedians. Casting Howerd as Sir Joseph Porter in this production of H.M.S. Pinafore was a disaster. He treats the part as though it were a pantomime that needs his ad libs and oohs and ahs.
Yes, I recently read that the overture was cut a little in this film. I'm not as familiar with HMS as some of the other operettas, so I couldn't say for sure.
Forgot to mention Frankie Howard as Sir Joseph Porter - you could possibly forgive his inability to sing, but not his inability to bother to learn the lines! Some dreadful crooner plays Captain Corcoran very badly too.
I have seen this and remember it to be very poor. The Why and Wherefore trio is a particular low point - I seem to remember they did it sat down - that's the stil at 0.39. A dreadful series actually and this, along with probably Ruddigore, were the worst ones. Such a shame as it is such a good idea to film the series and it could have been done so well. Must have put so many people of G&S over the years!!
I remember watching this in 1987 when it ran on PBS along with all of the other G&S operettas...my mom taped them since she's a huge fan as well. Now I have the complete set of DVDs that is out. Thanks for uploading this. :)

Nice! Do you have a favorite tune or solo?
jlf180 3 years ago
Yea, my solo (I play Oboe) in the Overture! I also like Ralph's solo at the beginning.

Brilliant, but I wish the whole overture could be uploaded. This is one of my favorite G&S overtures!

I believe that was the entire segment.

Yes, Pinafore has some brilliant songs and delightful characters. Such a wonderful operetta deserves to be performed well!
