  • now do it with someone sitting on the chair :P

  • Great clip.

  • Love the music! Where can I find more like it?

  • I just love old clips. Notice the feet are further apart and the hip movemnts are larger from the dancer with the chair. She must have strong teeth.

I really enjoyed the wings, they were almost hipnotic. I love to watch Samia Gamal,

and the others from the 1940's dance. Everyone interested in Belly dance should view the old clips at least once. Keep on dancing, Nonya

  • she reminds me of my maid LOL

    تذكرني بشغالتنـــــــــا خخخ تشبه لهآ

  • I liked that song, what is the name??????? O:

  • It's great seeing things like this to see where the art has come from and where it's gone. I only wish that these old clips had sound so we could get a better idea of what the music that they were dancing to actually sounded like. Thanks for posting thais.

  • GRACIAS!!!!! GRACIAS POR TENER TODO ESTOS RECUERDOS MUY BUENO....

  • ohhh whats the name of this song thats playing :)? thanks

  • dzihan & kamien !!!!!! tolle musik

  • I love those clips! I always enjoy watching them!

  • The first veil dancer looked like Louie Fuller, a pioneer modern dancer known for her use of fabrics in motion.

  • who's the dancer?

  • Damn! That dancer with the chair!! Ow! lol

  • These are very early films. Thank God, we have grown a lot more tantric since then. These hefty ladies were pioneers; without them coming over we would be, well, head to toe in black. Strange how the origin of this type of dance seems to be the Near East.

  • @robertschelly - yes they were pioneers!

the "typical" belly dance costume was by American dancer/choreographer Ruth St. Denis, who studied all sorts of Indo/Arab dance. Her costume was based on Indian design. These clips show the evolution of the dance and different costume styles.

everybody wanted to get into vaudeville - lol

  • @LadyMoondancer A BD teacher told me years ago that the bare midriff for Egyptian dancers started when the British were in Egypt and wanted to see dancers with bare tummies because that's what they were used to from India. Seems to me that the influence of dancers like Mata Hari who basically made up their whole sthick must have played a role, too.

  • @tanfoukdance

what you said makes a lot of sense. It is interesting how the belly dance costume has evolved.- and is still evolving with American tribal and gothic bd!

  • interesting to see the dancer with a chair and how easily she picks it up

  • wow i didnt know isis wings have been around that long!

  • @beledigirl3 They're so old, they're new again. :p

  • I would still love to know what the music is for this. This is a fabulous video - I love it! the second Loie imitator, who is she? Is there a longer video that this is a clip of? I would love to see more.

  • @MirandaBananaHat The song is called "Inshalla" and you can find it on the "Buddha Bar II" cd.

  • lol music is not scary

  • i like it

    but its kinda creeeepy :s

    coz of the music

  • The veil dance and the chair dance is absolutely amazing.

  • Whose the dancer with the chair.? I love her style!...and I think the music is spot on.

  • uau

  • the dance is gr8, undoubtly but the music is kinda really scary!

  • @88gaggu that is edited music ,these were silent films.

  • Nothing less than superb!!

  • Is this really an old filming...?or just some effects..?

  • yes these were really dancers, no special effects, i've seen this footage before in seperate clips and used to have info on it. it's amazing how we all now think we are some how pioneering our dance form- wings, balancing, yada yada yada. its all been done before, we just recycle it and add more glitter, and hopefully our own style :)

  • Wow it looks like the hula in a way. The outfits are way more covering than todays belly dancers

  • Of course. Rules were a lot more rigid in the turn of the century. Wearing less than that of the women in the video could have landed you in jail for indecent exposure, and even these ladies are pushing it.

  • LOL, that's because Hollywood got a hold of it!

  • wo0o0 es muiii diferente pero muyy bonito sobre las alas

  • Nice :)

  • does anyone know the name of the song? i love it!

  • The woman with the chair must've been incredibly talented (not to mention strong)! These old videos are amazing. :)

  • wow!

  • Everything non authentic except for Fatima who is very authentic and performed at world trade fair. Observe people. fatima is the mother of culture come to the US.

  • Authentic? Can you name any one form of art that has not changed or modified over years of time? Dance is an art form like and changes with culture and the people who perform it. Just because it is different from the way another has done it doesn't make it inauthentic... only a new style. Whether or not it suits your taste is up to the individual. Even in the middle east there are many different styles of belly dance. If everyone were to perform it the exact same way.. it would be very boring.

  • I agree so so so much.. thanks

  • I agree the dance is forever evolving but never forgetting its roots.

  • @Kataynagirl - THANK YOU!!! I'm so tired of people calling themselves belly dance purists, saying 'I prefer the original style of belly dance.' when they really mean modern cabaret, which is very different from the bellydance performed even 40 years ago. I never understood how anybody can make that claim when bellydance is supposed to be one of the oldest known forms of dance. I'd love it if people could just appreciate good dance for what it is and leave it at that.

  • Nice, but who did the music?

  • 2:55 - awesome!!!

  • That clip is on Rachel Brice's MySpace profile. LOL.

  • it's scary !!

  • OK folks - it's fun but that's a montage of several clips from American Variety Stage Theater's website: Princess Ali (Algerian), Ella Lola (14-year old American), Loie Fuller or an imitator - that fabric swirling had NOTHING to do with Oriental dance then: it was the whole act! - Princess Rajah (American), though her dance & the chair bit ARE authentic, Loie imitator again, Rajah again, Ella Lola, Princess Ali. Sorry, but the spoken voiceover is unauthentic & inappropriate.

    Aunt Rocky

  • Aunt Rocky, is the Loie Fuller swirling fabric the origination of the Isis Wings?

  • Loie Fuller experimented with fabric - how its movement could be like a dance unto itself. She experimented with lighting & collaborated with Mme Curie & radium-coated glass filters.

Isis "Wings" were "invented" by fusion dancer, Ayshe (Linda Sloboda) for a pharaonic dance she did. They caught on with some US dancers.

Some Americans used them in Ahlan wa Sahlan shows in Cairo & they started using them, but NOT the way we do.

    Does this help?

    Morocco (Aunt Rocky)

  • This is a very haunting video. Nice find.

  • so neat!~ what a great video!

  • We got more and more naked in time while dancing, I think it because of the global warming..

  • hahahahahahahahahaha yeah that´s why

  • perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Loie Fuller's work is stunning. THANK YOU for this montage.

  • WOW! but it AMAZING though!

  • What music is that?

  • ooh my god thats is great i wish they put the dancers names or nationalty it would be perfect

  • Louie Fuller is so inspiring!!!
