  • horror..

  • like crows to sing... this song can't sing west people just balkans...

  • They say the consonants too roughly. They should try singing more calmly. And no offense but one of the sololists had a really squeaky voice at 0:51. But very nice anyway

  • to everyone complaining....whens the last time you won the ICCA's.....didnt think so.....that is all i think i made me point

  • the destroyed every note in the song... i used to sing this a while back and i know what the usual piece sounds like...this aint bad just too sharp

  • Im sorry but this sounds nothing like the original Ergen Deda song, this is HORRIBLE

  • Only Bulgarian singers will sound like Bulgarian singers...

  • @hcjuancamilo serbians can learn, dont be harsh. :)

  • this is amazing.

  • Sorry, but did not like this at all. I didn't even get the angry image. Instead I got bitchy, cheerleader image from the sound and visuals

  • .... they took first place with this? I've seen a few choirs attempt to sing Bulgarian, and this may be the absolute worst I've seen! They don't have the accentuation down, they're aspirating their t's, k's and p's like CRAZY (which is failing Singing European Songs 101!)... I think the judges were just blinded by the ambition these girls showed and not the actual performance.

  • We're singing this in my choir and when I found out that Noteworthy did a version of this, I was so excited!

  • These girls f**ked up the good song. This is not olimpics.. да го еба!

  • I felt that these girls, although they put in lots of effort, did not understand what they were singing about. This is about a village dance and how all the other girls leave the youngest, Anelina, to be with the old bachelor man. If I didn't know the proper meaning, I would have thought they were singing about anger, evil, fire and disturbing and inevitable death. Other than the completely different interpretation of the words, they clearly showed lots of passion for singing this.

  • Terrible ! Why are they shouting ? This song isn't like that !

  • What a beautiful song. What a (horrible?!?) performance.

  • They've turned it into the Slavic pantomime version of The Lion King.

  • They sound angry

  • RUBBISH !

  • they shout too much.

  • I can't wait for you all to judge the competition. Clearly it worked for them. When you judge, then you can correct.

  • bad spelling of the words too strong ... :) but the dynamic is good :) Im bulgarian :)

  • its not about pronouncing bulgarian, its about way of singing... instead of singing this became screaming. thats why bulgarian tradinitional way of singing is so hard and special :)

  • @trijumf There is a fine line between good straight tone technique and shouting. I think the recording makes it sound like they are shouting. It could be the case, but I have heard them live. It's not shouting. It's singing into the dissonances with more focus that gives it that angry bright tone.

Which makes sense being that they are a small group. The good forward technique makes them sound like a bigger group than they are.

  • fantastic song, thanx :-)

  • Give them a little break guys--they're obviously not Bulgarian, and haven't spoken it their entire lives, so they obviously don't KNOW they're pronouncing it wrong.

I still think it's a very powerful and lovely song (but then again, I don't speak Bulgarian).

  • Pronounciation is not that bad. The problem is the wierd interpretation of that funny song about the grandfather who went dancing with the girls. Try singing "Gingle bells"

that way and call it "unique"! ;)

  • abe, ostavete gi - balgarskiq sigurno im e truden... ama toq tanc - mali, mali...

  • True, the group should probably have researched a little more about the traditional usage and style of this song.

However, all of you truists out there need to understand the nature of this competition they were performing in. If this was a folk music event the approach would have been and should have been much different. But you can't really bash them for doing what was appropriate for the nature of this event---to give a musically invigorating and entertaining performance. give them a break

  • Wow, girls, before singing in foreign language it's supposed to have good idea of the language itself. Sorry, but that was a terrible bulgarian.

  • How they got first place with this I have no idea. I like noteworthy, but from seeing this done properly by others, this is horrible to watch. I love you Noteworthy, but stop please!!

  • they're freaking spitting the words

  • You have to learn, the song is more importent then the show, if you make it beatifil like it must be, you do not need to do any moves, and the listener will go in the space. This ist the bulgarian kind of singing.

  • The name of this song is "Ergen deda"

  • I think it's called "Shopsko Rhapsody".

  • what is the name of this song?

  • Why don't you just look at the video title?

  • You know, there is a thin line between "unique interpretation" and killing a song...and you crossed it. And i'm not even bulgarian to be biased, but this was painful to both watch and hear, especially watch.

  • Yea, I'm bulgarian and you are Absolutely right. Noteworthy... PLEASE.... stop

  • you pronounce it as it was arabic, like you want to hit somebody in a face with your song. jesus. and what was with all moving around? it was good, but could be way better

  • They were moving around because of the competition they were in.

  • good intonation, little over-pronounced and over-theatrical. If you knew the meaning of the text you'd probably pic something other than the "moon-walker" stile :):) Thank you, for the hard work

  • Very awesome xD I agree with Bachaelder. They are acapella! Which makes it a little strange that they're doing a choral piece.. but does not diminish the fact that they are very good! I'd love to hear this live.

Question though... is there someone who could translate the lyrics to english? I can't find them anywhere :(

  • to everyone complaining, these girls are an a Capella group. In a capella groups you make a song your own, you don't copy it exactly, they made it their own and i love it.

  • They could also write another song which they could like and perform this way. "Ergen deda" is a playful, funny song- NOT a military march. They are fighting the song and themselves while signing it. It's BAD. People grow when they are ready to listen to others and improve. It's one thing to not copy, it's another to make people's years bleed.

  • i both agree and disagree.

they look like they are fighting each other lol

whilst the song is both mystifying and dramatic, it is supposed to be happy at the same time..

  • @Bachaelder You're right that they made it their own. They took a beautifully amazing a cappella song, and turned it into their own very crappy a cappella performance.

  • @AdIgnorantiam I've seen a lot of young directors give this to their church choirs and high school choirs and do much worse.

  • @Bachaelder uhmm, "a capella" doesn't mean what you are saying!

  • The Yale women version on youtube is much closer to reality.

I saw the Bulgarian Women's Choir in Washington during a Smithsonian concert series and they were just mind-blowing amazing. Perhap this group and their artistic director(s) should stick with what they know.

  • I disagree. While they chose not to perform this piece in tradional Bulgarian fashion I applaud their unique interpretation of this piece.

  • I don't like it. The constant staccato in the pronunciation, as well as the choreography are a bit distracting. Bulgarian singers sound like they do because of a specific vocal technique, but the attempt to effect that sound comes across as shouting. Had they sung more fluidly and without trying to sound like something they weren't, I'm sure I'd have liked it more.

  • this is amazing. i have to sing this for school. its a cool song to sing

  • I saw the Bulgarian Women's Chorus perform this number at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco many years ago, and can't say their version was better than yours; unlike you, they remained perfectly stationary. Awesome!

  • bravissimo:)

    and

    Thank you

    I'm proud to be Bulgarian:)

  • I love this song! it was the opener (first song) for my band's half time show last year
