@gittahfiend I'm not sure.. but I don't think Dennis Wilson was there. Jardine, Carl Wilson, Mike Love and Jimmy Guercio-who managed both bands-was dressed in the same outfit as the rest of them were. But if Dennis was THERE, Bobby STILL would've put on a terrific show. @ChicagoKid1969 : But he sings and plays perfectly getting the high notes in the Closing-Coda without any mistakes, his bass-playing is tremendous too grooving together with drummer Seraphine at really high level. The good old days: Musicians so good, that even alcohol can't corrupt their talent. Conclusion: Great Band with killin' brass-section, great song: Simply Chicago at his best.
Chicago is amazing since they were (and still are) so unique and talented. The music that comes out today is so over-produced with electronics to make everyone sound good. Also, today's music is about style over substance. Chicago had plenty of both.
I loved the song because of the wild intro riff by Terry Kath. Peter Cetera was dreamy because of his blue (or green) eyes that can light up a room. I am not sure if he was drunk in contrast to Terry Kath because Kath has a history of drug, alcohol, and weight problems. Kath also owned guns, enough for one of them to kill him in 1978. Cetera would later have issues with the band.
Terry Kath one of my fav guitarists, he had a style all his own, one of the few that you only had to hear a few measures of his playing and you could recognise his style..
everytime i hear him i wanna break out my wah pedal, he showed how to use that sound in alot of unconventional type situtaions and tunes i'd never think a wah sound would work, such as this tune here...i love his wah playing in "searching for so long" and of course 25 or 6 to 4... here's to you Terry, we all miss you..

They were reflecting in the lyrics to this song about their fond memories of their childhood watching Howdy Doody on television in the 50's and drive in movies. That was before my time but they were the current band of my generation 70's and They are a great band and highly underated.
I saw Chicago with their original lineup in 1976. What a band they were! Waht great music. It's good see Terry Kath, Peter Cetera and Danny Seraphine playing again.
Peter Cetera always looked like he was bored in Chicago - came across like an asshole, too. Guess when you're super talented, and later famous, things may come too easy for you. Chicago never recovered when he split. Somehow I think he knew this. Nice to have these old clips on here.
@ChicagoKid1969 Awesome ! I would love to get him drunk ! During an argument , My ex boyfriend asked me why I was with him and I told him "because you look like Pete Cetera " !!! LOL ! And he did !
being a horn player in stage bands in high school in 73-77 Chicago was the band. No one other than a few like Ohio players, BST and a couple others were close to the energy and precision of music and real rock. There are all other bands then ... there is only Chcago. And you haters who think Chicago is all fluff never knew the real band. 44yrs and only one band lives. My band. The greatest band of all time. Chicago
@cudaj2 I think that it would be a monstrous honor! I wish there were MORE musicians that made good music today like these guys. I'm only 18 but I totally appreciate good music!
@ChicagoKid1969 He might have drunk. I read that of all the songs he sang lead on he hated "Old Day's" the most . One reason was being because of the line preferring to the show Howdy Doody . He hated that show when he was a kid. Another note a reason Jimmy Pankow is singing back ground on it is because he wrote the song .
I remember once reading some liner notes in which Peter Cetera stated he would not sing this song live because of the "Howdy Doody" lyric so I was pleasantly surprised to find this live video!
@loucarey62 I guess you could say Peter found out there is no " I " in team. I like Peter as a performer but Jimmy Pankow and Robert Lamm and the rest are just as well rounded if not more so in their musical abilities. The pressure on Lamm, in the early days writing just about everything they did, had to have been exhausting. Interestingly enough, Jimmy "trombone" wrote this one. Also wrote Make Me Smile.
@racehorse7669 this show was aired 12-31-74/1-1-75 . This was one of 2 songs the band played for the first time but the single old days did not come out until April of '75

Great version of this classic. This is the one tune that the current Chicago can not come close to replicating Cetera's great vocals. He misses a couple of notes here, but his vocal timbre is so pleasant to the ear, which was a big part of Chicago's radio success in the 70's. Scheff and Howland need to stop butchering this one in concert and have the band shelve it for good.
@lpn20051 Weren't they playing a presidential or some special event...would explain the Tux ..I would think they were digging it!!!Just for the exposure for the glory..')
Thanks for this trip down memory lane. I remember watching this from Dick Clark's Rocking New Year's Eve 1975. The only time I saw Chicago was in 1974 (original Doobie brothers opened for them) at Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City, NJ. and certainly one of the most memorable concerts I've seen especially since I loved Terry Kath :)
@ChicagoKid1969 Ahaha! Well it was new years eve after all. I remember fighting with my parents to watch this instead of Guy Lombardo. Thanks for posting!
I never really liked Chicago (bit too soft-rock for me) but respect them as musicians. That drummer is amazing, in a different class to the standard rock drummer
Music is only good if you Can feel it not hear it. There has yet to been a song these days where you can feel it. Because music writers don't care anymore.
Old Days ... truly the BEST of times. Being a kid was simple. When you got to the store and told your Mom, "I'll be in the toy section" and she had no worries about the same. When the street lights coming on meant it was time to go home. When you could ride your bicycle blocks away - treasuring that first true taste of independence. When doing things WITH your family was okay - AND fun. When listening to AM radio at night was better than a plane ticket. Old Days ... gone but NEVER forgotten.
I could see that Peter Cetera really did not enjoy singing this song as he looks like he is just going through the motions. He constantly goes away from his mic when he is not singing even at short pauses between verses. He has a scowl on his face throughout most of this performance. While not one of my favourite Chicago tunes it is still a good tune nonetheless. Seen them live recently and they still perform this song with Keith Howland singing it.
@Guitarist1972 I heard of all the songs Cetera did with Chicago he hated that one the most. He did not care for the line about howdy doody since he hated that show
@tryman1978 No, thats his brother Tony....Tony got in trouble for banging Jann Wenner's wife in a bathroom stall of a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Manhattan....thus Chicago is not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...its Tony's fault.....
REAL close to studio. the only difference lies in the fact that it fuckin spectacular and that can't be captured with auditory alone. but that's just my opinion.
ChicagoKid1969...thank you very much for posting all of these videos....been a fan since 1969...they are the best....should be in the Hall of Fame...and the band should all get back together and go out on tour together...again thank you for very much
Man, where are all these ppl who appreciate music like this? I see them on here, but there are none to be found in my vicinity. I love it! All of my friends say "Quit living in the past" and such, but I'm sorry, music today just cannot compare to the music of the 70s, IMO. Maybe I need some new friends...
@reving19 You have great taste in music. Most of the stuff out there today sucks. Keep listening to what you like and let the others try to keep up with the Joneses.
This is the show that made me a fan of the band forever. I was 12, babysitting my little brothers and sister when my parents went out for new years. i turned on New Years Rockin Eve and was blown away. These clips bring me back to that magical time of my childhood. I wish DCP would let them out for all to see.
Old Days; Drive in Movies! In the 70's there was a drievin near where I lived that had a large field with a lake ajoining it. My friends and I used to sneak ito the shows( after stopping to smoke a joint or 2 by the lake shore). If I could remember those days they'd be special LOL
You hear that PC didn't like this song but if he's not enjoying himself here, he's fooling me.
I love the way they stay on the original arrangement with no flourishes. At 2:33, we get a moment of a fresh-faced horn section member doing his job and at 2:50, it's beautiful the way the horns drop what they're doing to come in on the excellent backing vocals.
And they're doing it in tuxes and lapel carnations.
This song, remembering the innocent days of youth, is good for you..
Ahhhhhh, old days, good times I remember. Thanks ChicagoKid for walking me down memory lane with your fabulous posts! Great times, great GREAT times....I would be so happy if you could bring back the Wishing You Were Here segment from the show, that was....well, Wow! I am so delighted to have found so many people online who feel the same about this bunch of guys doing just what they loved to do and doing it like no other. Cheers!
I wish I could just take a time machine back to New Years Eve '75 and just relive my life again. So carefree, so simple, and not a care in the world. Just like the song says.. ~good times I remember.. filled with simple pleasure..~ What a wonderful time and what a wonderful song! Peace and Gods Blessings.
@Luvinthe70s It seems like music back then had much more melody and harmony , and people played real instruments. Today's techno-pop is all digital drum machines and synthesized vocals. I'll always enjoy this old stuff along with the great memories the songs evoke.
I miss the old days. I don't fit in this old world anymore. How nice it would be to rewind time...if only that were possible. Have been a Chicago fan for many years.Thank you for this:)
Love it. Watching Jimmy, Walter and Lee doing back up vocals is a real hoot. I wish DCP would release the entire show on DVD. Keeping this stuff hidden in a vault is a waste.
Agreed. I suspect some of the resistence to release stuff is on the part of Peter Cetera: he not only refused to participate in the Behind the Music episode of Chicago, but would not allow VH1 to include any Chicago songs for which he received writing credit. This is a speculative inference on my part and I may be wrong about his involvement, but I'll stand behind the claim that Peter Cetera has become a real jerk, post-Chicago.
what a great song. combination of amazing vocals, jazzy horns, and rocking guitar licks by The Man, and of course the beautiful harmonies. the ending of the song is amazing. how are these guys not in the rock and roll HOF?
the guys all look so handsome in their formal wear but mr. pC blue eyes is just beautiful. and for someone who supposedly doesn't like singing this song, he's doing a fine job. one (allegedly) misplaced comment may not be the whole story.
ty ck1969 ! There was a video on here about a year ago from this same concert of Wishin you you here with the Beach boys doing back up vocals that I thought was Terrific unfortunately it was removed & i am trying to get that vido again !
Fine. This song may have been written by Jimmy Pankow, but to anyone who hears and it and recognizes it, it's Peter Cetera's song. Chicago is next to nothing without Peter. I wouldn't pay $2.00 in 2009 to see them without Peter: I paid $20.00 to see them at Castle Farms in July of 1977.
Does anyone know where you can get a video of this New Year's eve concert ? I am pretty sure it was a Dick Clark 's Rockin New Year's eve show either 1974 or 75 Chicago sang several songs i believe including Wishin you were here with the beach boys as back-up - if anyone can send me a video of this song or ofthe concert , Please do so !
Re: Getting Chicago's New Years Rockin' Eve..... I contacted Dick Clark Productions directly, ans asked if I could purchase a copy of the entire show. They said there's a legal battle going on, at the moment regarding the film staff & producers. They apparently are all trying to squeeze as much money out of Dick Clark Productions, as possible. I heard they may be coming to an agreement soon. I'd suggest you check directly with them.
man,,,im glad i was born in the 70s,,music had a feel back then,,i got a little taste of what it was like before mtv ruined it. im sad for my kids though ,they will never have their own music to look back on like i did. ive spoiled them on this old stuff,,,they cant stand todays crap.
Guys-- this is Chicago at its peak. The Kath/Cetera/Seraphine rhythmic core is as good as it gets. Period. The latter two were underrated, but Kath didn't get a fraction of the credit he should have. The man could match guitar skills with any person alive. He played both rhythm and regular guitar at once, with speed and accuracy that is mind-boggling. Chicago as a whole was a tight, efficient, powerhouse band that went unappreciated. Sadly, the watered down 80s version is what people remember.
Phenomenal song from when I was only 6 years old and listening to this tune on the car stereo as my 18 year old brother drove us to see the Philadelphia Flyers' games in '75 and onwards!!!! I can't stand it!!!
Yes, Peter hated singing this. He wasn't going to sing @ " Howdy Doody and all that sh*t. " Was a paen Jimmy Pankow wrote to his childhood. I don't know @ PC but you can't help but have a great feeling everytime you hear this song!
Devils, I couldn't agree with you more. It adds spice to the song without a doubt. I think they added the drumroll fill to buy time for the fellas to get off their instruments and up to the mikes for the final chorus.

Man, where are all these ppl who appreciate music like this? I see them on here, but there are none to be found in my vicinity. I love it! All of my friends say "Quit living in the past" and such, but I'm sorry, music today just cannot compare to the music of the 70s, IMO. Maybe I need some new friends...
reving19 1 year ago 2

There are 30 members in this band. How did they make any money? For Christ Sake they have a Brass Section

Notice how Pete keeps looking down to his right... he is reading the verse lyrics because he can't remember them.

Watch Pankow at the end... he sings the falsetto parts with Pete.

NO DOUBT! Get me on the wayback machine now.
rubicon1983 1 year ago 4
@Luvinthe70s It seems like music back then had much more melody and harmony , and people played real instruments. Today's techno-pop is all digital drum machines and synthesized vocals. I'll always enjoy this old stuff along with the great memories the songs evoke.

Is it just me or does Peter Cetera look like Freddie Prinze Sr. with that haircut? Haha!

I miss the old days. I don't fit in this old world anymore. How nice it would be to rewind time...if only that were possible. Have been a Chicago fan for many years.Thank you for this:)

jameslickms 2 years ago 2
Love it. Watching Jimmy, Walter and Lee doing back up vocals is a real hoot. I wish DCP would release the entire show on DVD. Keeping this stuff hidden in a vault is a waste.
sueintexas 2 years ago 6
Agreed. I suspect some of the resistence to release stuff is on the part of Peter Cetera: he not only refused to participate in the Behind the Music episode of Chicago, but would not allow VH1 to include any Chicago songs for which he received writing credit. This is a speculative inference on my part and I may be wrong about his involvement, but I'll stand behind the claim that Peter Cetera has become a real jerk, post-Chicago.
mharrin5507 2 years ago 2
what a great song. combination of amazing vocals, jazzy horns, and rocking guitar licks by The Man, and of course the beautiful harmonies. the ending of the song is amazing. how are these guys not in the rock and roll HOF?
MrFlatiron 2 years ago 4
Damn few really good bands get into HOF. It's a joke.

the guys all look so handsome in their formal wear but mr. pC blue eyes is just beautiful. and for someone who supposedly doesn't like singing this song, he's doing a fine job. one (allegedly) misplaced comment may not be the whole story.
kimberkley 2 years ago
Peter doesn't have blue eyes. They're gray-green. Robert Lamm has the bluest eyes I've ever seen...and they're gorgeous!

ty ck1969 ! There was a video on here about a year ago from this same concert of Wishin you you here with the Beach boys doing back up vocals that I thought was Terrific unfortunately it was removed & i am trying to get that vido again !

Chicago was the first concert I ever went to. I was 15 it was at the Olympia in Detroit.
peteyball420 2 years ago
Fine. This song may have been written by Jimmy Pankow, but to anyone who hears and it and recognizes it, it's Peter Cetera's song. Chicago is next to nothing without Peter. I wouldn't pay $2.00 in 2009 to see them without Peter: I paid $20.00 to see them at Castle Farms in July of 1977.

i totally agree. you got to see them in '77? i'm so jealous i ache.

Does anyone know where you can get a video of this New Year's eve concert ? I am pretty sure it was a Dick Clark 's Rockin New Year's eve show either 1974 or 75 Chicago sang several songs i believe including Wishin you were here with the beach boys as back-up - if anyone can send me a video of this song or ofthe concert , Please do so !
yeluacm2 2 years ago
Re: Getting Chicago's New Years Rockin' Eve..... I contacted Dick Clark Productions directly, ans asked if I could purchase a copy of the entire show. They said there's a legal battle going on, at the moment regarding the film staff & producers. They apparently are all trying to squeeze as much money out of Dick Clark Productions, as possible. I heard they may be coming to an agreement soon. I'd suggest you check directly with them.

Terry looked so hot during this performance! Is it true that Peter Cetera hated this song??
There's also a video of Chicago performing Dialogue during this same performance---it's awesome--a really good performance of that song.
jennebe27 2 years ago 2
Yes, Peter hated singing this. He wasn't going to sing @ " Howdy Doody and all that sh*t. " Was a paen Jimmy Pankow wrote to his childhood. I don't know @ PC but you can't help but have a great feeling everytime you hear this song!

I absolutely love the extra bar of fill at 2:50, where the chorus is actually delayed a bar. makes the whole song a lot more exciting.
DevilsNotes 2 years ago 6
Absolutely. I bet Danny loves that part too.
cheleguapo 2 years ago
yeah, I agree it was classy the way they did it, it was to give them time to get set up with the mics.
jimkingwood 2 years ago
Devils, I couldn't agree with you more. It adds spice to the song without a doubt. I think they added the drumroll fill to buy time for the fellas to get off their instruments and up to the mikes for the final chorus.
