SOPA is threatening the internet. The NDAA is taking over our rights to a fail trial. The military is still as privatized as ever and Eisenhower was spot on when he predicted we would become too powerful for our own good. The world is getting worse everyday and our leaders have no desire to make things right.
Its sad that the target of this discussion is so confused. Assume all the issues that Naomi spoke about are solved. The problem is that the force driving them remains. We are at the point where our money supply is terminal. Most all of it is used to pay interest on the debt. Government protects the invisible money machine as it plays the Halls of Congress. It abides Congress when it issues more and more bills that is funded by the real master of our nation.

Klein think Argentina is an economic paradise so that alone discredits all the crap she spews out. I bet she thinks 30% inflation is healthy for the Venezuelan economy.
@DanteWhite haha hahahahahaha you're clearly not in the least bit economically educated so i'm not even going to bother arguing with you. I mean it's kind of funny seeing as we've had keynesianism in place for quite a while...
@DanteWhite baha and yet you think we've had the type of free market capitalism as advocated by any prominent libertarians or conservatives. You've clearly never read any JS Mill, De Tocqueville, von mises, hayek, rothbard, or friedman seeing as you clearly have no idea what theyre talking about or that there's a difference between Keynesianism and austrianism
@DanteWhite And even though you're more economically educated than me, you're a progressive who actually thinks FDR took us out of a depression--even though he pushed us straight into it from a recession
@oJKBo do you even know what i am i clearly know about libertarianism and laissez faire and that it is not the current system in the us but i tell you that such system does not work basically because of the ethical issue of property rights its not a question of theory its a question of what is just and better for the majority of the population. piotr kropotkin made this all clear in his book the conquest of bread.another thing is that neoliberalism is very well alive today at a global level
@DanteWhite what is just and better for the majority is the belief that every oppressive state on this earth in the last century was founded on. This type of democratic thought is foolish and dangerous. If the majority think it's better to keep your mouth shut, congratulations, everyone has just lost the right to free speech
@DanteWhite the best way to improve the economic position of every human being is by letting them make their own decisions and do what they want without violating other people's rights
@oJKBo please note that i agree on everything that libertarianism promotes even the abolition of the state or state interference in the market but we disagree on property rights and other few minor things
@oJKBo not really because if you change property rights for example the collectivization of enterprise and if we as you said let people make their own decisions and do what they want without violating other people's rights and make those basic rights the law which would be enforced and to enforce the law and have a law you do not need the state. and about democracy trust me the majority is always right and besides they will choose what they want as long as it doesnt violate basic human rights
@oJKBo besides democracy works better than republicanism because id rather follow what the majority has to say than what a small group of businessmen and politicians who are alien to everyday average life have to say
@DanteWhite democracy is not better than a republic. In a republic all rights are preset and cannot be wiped away by a majority vote. In a democracy man is at the mercy to the majority. I would rather have a few hundred educated economists, philosophers, and statesmen lead a federal republic where local government is very powerful. No man, no majority has the right to erase the rights of others
@oJKBo "No man, no majority has the right to erase the rights of others" i agree with you on that
"I would rather have a few hundred educated economists, philosophers, and statesmen lead a federal republic where local government is very powerful" i dont agree
the republic extreme is bad and the democratic extreme is bad why no preset some basic human rights and then let people decide by direct democracy other issues as long as no ones basic rights are violated
@DanteWhite 1) local governments should have more power than they do today in the US. We continue to move away from a federal republic. direct democracy cannot be national, it would have to be local where citizens of towns and cities vote for their laws. Getting 300 million people to vote on something is completely impractical--getting a few thousand is much more practical and attainable
@oJKBo well not quite, im sure with the technology available today getting a few million people to vote at a time could be practical however the idea of different towns voting for minor laws in a democratic way that doesnt infringe basic rights is not bad at all if you dont agree with the laws of the town you move to another one more compatible with your preferences sounds goood
@oJKBo i also forgot to say that even tough the federal reserve is a central banking system and its supposedly part of the state it is actually privately owned
so trust me i am against the federal reserve as much as you
All economic jargons n theories are just theories . Real reason is that FED belongs to private individuals who formed cartel since the time of President Wilson. Bankers knew baby boomers of the fifties are withdrawing their money from investments why? they are retiring Before it happens bankers create a climate of depression by contracting money frm market abrubtly after building an artificial boom from property mkt.and other markets. After the bubble burst their plan comes to effect.
in my mind two things caused the financial crisis: (1) Greenspan artificially lowering the interest rate to 1% for years and (2) the repeal of the Glass-Steagle Act allowing bankers to take riskier loans with peoples' money.
well wall street is responsible for taking huge risks to try and back the subprime mortgages. i'm tired of hearing conservatives say "Fannie/Freddie is partially run by the government, and they are partially responsible, hence it's the government's fault". It's a guilt-by-association trick that you guys try to play, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Yes, they use gov't agencies to create biggest hedge fund ever. They'll make pay back very fast and roll it back and forth so no one can understand it anymore. Then another crisis come again. Micro economic policy will hide it until the last second for no one has a choice except going along. Rethink! Credit and cash scheme doctrinal-ize human effort, creativity and education in names of finance, budget and loan on our own efforts with psychology beyond our understanding, a Ponzi we insured.
It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning.
Henry Ford
Call your states senator and congressman.Ask them to audit the FED by supporting the following bills.
In congress Ron Pauls-HR 1207
In the senate Bernie sanders S-604
Call & tell them know how you feel about the war, torture, nafta, the patriot act etc.

Naomi Klein calls wrongly corporatism, capitalism. She also blames deregulation which is really wrong. There was some deregulation, however it was under a socialist assumption that the government would socialize the risk. So the government created the moral hazard. The real culprit is the Federal Reserves control over money.
Actually sorry but that is capitalism. There wasnt' some de-regulation, there was a LOT of it, pushed by business and politicans that kept saying that it was capitalism and anything else was socialism and so anti-capitalist.
At the heart of lassaiz faire capitalism is the goal of maximizing profits while minimizing losses.
Unrestrained capitalism inevetibly leads to corporatism since it capitalism only says buisness is privately owned, not that business can't own the government.
You don't sound very educated in economics so i ask you, what was "deregulated"? Also, do you have any clue about the role of the Federal Reserve? Have you ever heard or read about the Austrian Business Cycle theory? You seem to have a very limited and distorted view of laissez faire capitalism. Its people like you who are advocate interventionist policies that cause the corporatism.
Thank you. Misinformation, or better yet, intentional information deprivation or information fetishism, creates these convoluted theories. They get the agenda before the information, instead of having the information first. People are unwilling to look into Libertarianism and are unwilling to see the bigger picture of why pure capitalism with inflationary and oppressive foreign elements ceases to be pure capitalism and can no longer be judged as such. The Fed has got to go.
I guess Naomi likes the stimulus, but to me it is exactly the same as the bail out. I don't know why she makes the distinction other than she likes the party in power when it is a bail out.
Personally I think making sure people don't slide even farther into a hole because they cant find jobs will help a lot more then helping banks buy up smaller banks.
I could be wrong. But time will tell and I am willing to give it shot.
No there is a big difference between the stimulus and the TARP.
The stimulus was an investment in the economy, to stop the job losses, and prime the pump. If the government invests, the thought is that private investors will too.
Those with money are hiding it under their mattresses- we need them to invest again.
I agree with Klein's theory on the bailout, but countries historically have always protected their banks. That's why we enacted New Deal laws, because of 1929.
"Why don't we start repossessing the assets of these assholes who started this mess, sell them and then just distribute the money to the American people in the form of a stimulus? "
Sorry I cliked spam I meant to click reply.
1 trillion divided by 300 million is 3000 each. That would be a way better stimulus.
Why don't we start repossessing the assets of these assholes who started this mess, sell them and then just distribute the money to the American people in the form of a stimulus?
Lao Tsu addressed "Shock Doctrine" in Tao verse 18. Nothing new under the sun... But this bailout sure seems to be a grand and brand new gallgame. Not only did we not give capitalism a try, what about the Constitution, democracy and republic? A lot can disappear while you're asleep in front of the TV.
Welcome to plutocracy and the New World Order. Get chip injection in line 1 and then file into bread line.
The forces at war on a global level are no longer democrats and republicans or liberals and conservatives, but good versus evil. The changes that are being talked about are who will survive and who won't. When the masses applaud the concept of change then the logic is the more the better. I don't think anyone has any idea what evil men mean when they say change unless of course you're evil.
In the mid 19th century, when big business types got too big, mobs would show up at their homes throwing all their furniture into the street and setting the furniture aflame. This led the way to unionization, stabilization and regulation and Civil War. Short of burning down big business pursuits of happiness, why not bailout the American People. Then we can go shopping and forget about the real dangers on the planet like war, starvation and climate change. Uh-huh!
Naomi & Cenk, it made no difference. Our pushback was completely ignored. The Paulson people just changed the rules in the middle of the game - no toxic assets, giving money right to the biggest banks! We are in super deep doodoo.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Wall Street was sabotaged by liberals in the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac scheme to turn high risk borrows loose on America. These
high risk borrowers where given homes with 0% down and no closing costs. They had no intention of paying their mortgages and because the gov't liberals were backing these loans with taxpayers sweat the loans were signed anyway. Thank you Barney Frank and Walters and Means and most of all, Thank you Obama
Hey moron, the republicans were in power the last 8 years. The republicans were the ones that deregulated the banking industry not the democrats. Wall Street was too greedy and took advantage of the deregulation. They were not sabotaged. BTW, this bailout was your idol George Bush's idea.
you are both partially right. legislation written by slimey lobbyists, pushed by Gramm-R (McDrain economic guru) and Lugar R and signed into law by criminal Clinton-D is at the heart of the housing bubble pop. Look at who obama is teaming up with!!! the SAME SCUM!!!
Sounds like she's not pissed about capitalism, but corporatism.
When the government has too much power, they can determine which cells in the "free market" will thrive (their buddies and those that can afford lobbyists) and which will perish. The examples in her book are mostly instances of this collusion between the public and private sector. For the same framework with a more logical analysis, check out Crisis and Leviathan.
Before we critique capitalism, we should at least try it out.
Just let us all hope that the US Military Industrial Complex does NOT take over control of the Internet ( censorship for example ).
It is the Internet that allows critical discussion on such matters ... otherwise we'd have to rely on mainstream Media .. controlled by the very people that work against us.
Please read the Shock Doctrine, you will understand what is happening, and understand it has been happening for over 35 years.
This kind of "bi-partisanship" is totalitarianism nothing more.
Vote every incumbent out, their only interest is in lining the pockets of the already obscenely wealthy on the backs of the middle class, meaning the other 99% of us.
We need to see these douchebags go to prison, our country is in total financial shambles.
This girl is not just a moron, she's a bright shining moron. The economic crisis was created by Wall Street?
uh, Miss Klein, ever heard of the corporate income tax? Sarbanes-Oxley? The Community Reinvestment Act? The Federally Backed "corporations" Freddie and Fannie? The goddamn very existence of the Federal Reserve?
No wonder these businesses made bad loans. They are either squeezed - or flat out legally required - to make them!
Klein is such an intellectual light weight, my guess is that she blew up Milton Friedmans supposed idea of "the shock doctrine" to avoid having to deal with any of his real ideas found in any of his books.
If you asked anybody who read and understood his books and asked them "what do you think of friedmans idea of "the shock doctrine"?" "I bet they would say, what the hell are you talking about, is that in one of his books? I must have missed it"
Yeah, but he's still smart and knows how to make money. Let's not let our personal opinions of the guy's politics get in the way of getting rich off his methods.
Why don't we do what Warren Buffet did, purchased preferred shares with 10% interest?
That why they could get the cash they need.
Buffet didn't want to mess around with the toxic assets, why should we? Other than the politicians want to selectively dish out the 700B for political gain.
you are absolutely right. Please check out Naomi Klein's- The End of America (youtube) It is a lecture at a Washington University that she gave. Please check it out, it is about Bush and his regime. The video is in my favs if you want to look.
"Obama ties to the firms. James A. Johnson, the former head of his vice presidential vetting panel, was a chief executive of Fannie Mae, as was Franklin D. Raines, who said this week that he has been consulting with the campaign on housing issues. Maria Echaveste, a top Clinton White House official whose husband, Christopher Edley Jr., is a close Obama friend and adviser, has lobbied for Freddie Mac, and former commerce secretary William M. Daley, a top Obama backer, was an in-house lobbyist."
The Washington Post notes both campaigns have uncomfortable ties to Freddie and Fannie
Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, was president of the Homeownership Alliance, which advocates the expansion of homeownership through low-interest mortgages funded by Fannie and Freddie. Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., who is heading McCain's vice presidential vetting panel, was a lobbyist for Fannie Mae. Mark Buse, a longtime McCain aide, lobbied for Freddie Mac before returning to McCain's Senate staff.
Actually, Cenk is an obvious Obama supporter. He is extremely bias towards McCain. He very seldom talks down about Obama, except a few episodes where he was like "GO FOR THE THROAT". However, its good to watch biased media, as long as you are watching both for and against your opponent and ur choice.
"Truth is lethal." Truth is not lethal. For most people, it's an annoyance, an option, an Ego killer, a source of worry, a reminder of their frailty and mortality. Truth is also relative, and Truth is not even in demand. And even if it were, how many times have you seen actually do something about it? The Crowd definitely has its way ... and it is quite immobile, to say it politely.
Idealistically democrats are to follow an agenda of real democracy, but instead they are left of center republicans. sad because it;s a ruse and false proposition. Amercia of USA has never been pure but is has been better in history than other governing parties.
obama is an idiot for going along. for the past 10 years there has been a discussion about injecting a 100 billion for healthcare, which hasn't happened. this shit is decided in one week and its 1000 billion dollars and more to come. in 5 years when freddie and fannie start making profits again, the government will sell them back to their wall street friends at rockbottom price. its the sweat of the poor that feeds the rich.
E-mail every congressman you can about this scam. Americans have been way too passive for the last 30 years. We've traded our freedom for comfort and "security". Witness the result.
Well, the good news is 90% of Americans have seen right through John McCain's desperate little stunt today and think it's a bad idea. However, what concerns me is why McCain is so afraid of debating Obama. McCain used to be a pretty good debater. Has his Alzheimer's progressed so badly that he feels he's unable to get through a debate? And if that's the case, the American people need to know he is not up to the task.
She's right. It's the last chance for Bush and his fellow criminals to steal as much as possible from the United States Treasury! If we let them do this, we are crazy. Let them sink in their own shit. Then we can rebuild a real economy!
obama goes along with everything! just the fact that he went along with FISA and that his top adviser is zbigniew brzezinsky and his cousin is dick cheney, say everything!
When a drug dealer is caught, they lose everything. They lose their shiny cars, they lose all of their shiny jewelry, they lose their fancy house. Everything that could have been possibly connected to their dirty money is taken from them.
This needs to happen to the financial executives that have been sucking the lifeblood out of America. This 'good old boy' club of well connected and mutually protected professional criminals should have all of their 'toys' confiscated.
there are over 250 million people in the US but there is maybe a couple of thousand people at the very top of the food chain that manipulate and use our fears against each other. It is called 'divide and conquer' If they can divide us, they can conquer us... The lobby group for this tiny percentage of population is the republican party. This is why they cannot run on issues but must run on 'Willie Hortons' and swift boats. This is tyranny and we will be their slaves if we do not recognize this
The crash will be used to get McCain elected. Shit will hit the fan on the streets and America will need a tough President to impose Marshal Law. McCain is Mr. Crises. Obama isn't the guy most American people want to handle a crises involving Marshal Law or the military. Americans will be kept scared in their homes. RGR stocks will go through the roof.
Just something nobody seems to care about... they keep trying all these trickle-DOWN policies to bolster the economy... the first thing that began rescuing the people in the Great Depression was a trickle-UP policy. Does nobody know their US history? There's only 200+ years of it, for pete's sake...
Socialism is kleptocracy they call it "redistribution" or "social justice" but the ethical underlying reality of socialism is that it is a theft based method of social organization.
Watch those Bastards in the white house! What Paulson wants is to be the American Dictator. We will be enslaved. They are using the same tactics HITLER used to come into power. Remember, Prescott Bush- W's Grandfather- helped Hitler get into Power! It's in the BUSH GENES to start wars and invade other countries. They've already destroyed the Constitution. We're living in a POLICE STATE!
She distorts the facts sooooooo much. Her basic thesis, that politicians use disasters to fulfill their agenda is accurate. The notion the capitalism creates these disasters is insane. This week has really shown what a bunch of idiots the so called experts are. The federal reserve is mostly to blame for all of this.
Thank you Naomi for telling it like it is. I never watch the Young Turks anymore because they think that Obama is going to save the world. He's not ok. Same shit we have now.
You're right, you don't watch TYT because Cenk criticizes Obama at least as much if not more than he praises him. But if you think you're smarter than Cenk, hey great, just keep criticizing people on your side.
never claimed to be smarter than him. Maybe as well imformed nad less bias than he is. I judt don't agree on his politics. Plus there are people that present the issues of today more astutely than he does that I prefer to watch. As for people on my side, I am an independent. Neither major party has much to offer the American people. They have ruled America long enough.
Forget the politics, the Truth is The Truth always. Bush and McSame fvcked our USa over for last 8 years. 2 non won wars, broke economy, and beggin the middle east for oil.
Never did I say that I support McCain. I watch this show all the time. However, I'm just pointing out to people that you need to look at all candidates from all angles. I'm a Republican for Obama as well. Real Republicans are for smaller govt. (see Ron Paul). However, people that don't look at every candidate from both sides, don't know what they are voting on.
You see .. if you're not voting for Barr then I don't wanna hear you complaining about Obama. I'm assuming you have problems with McCain for obvious reasons.
I can voice my opinion about Obama as much as I want. Neither party has done anything they said thay would do. The Republicans in the last 8 and the Democrats in the last 4, and neither will in this election. I will vote, but not for any of the aforementioned cantidates. What does conplaining about Obama and not liking Barr have to do with anything anyway? There are three other people in this race. One of them will get my vote.
Fox has already ruined 2 elections. Both of which kept the current president in office, my (and this country's) least favorite president, Bush. I think I'll keep watching TYT and ignore the Fox news-esque right wing bias.
Actually you should watch the free press from outside the U.S. if you want the truth. The Real News is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head that comes close to the truth in the U.S. TYT and Fox certainly don't.
You must be new to the show. Cerk was Republican who voted for McCain in 2000. Now Cerk has woken up to reality. Republican are liars and have never been for smaller Gov. Nor less spending. Regan= Debt. Bush41 = Debt. Clinton= surplus. Bush= debt. Why would anyone defend McSame. When he nor his party does nothing but Fuck the USA.
Hardly new to the show at all. Been around long enough to see that you pick and choose your facts. I never defended McCain. I wouldn't vote for him if they held my feet to the fire.
"He is extremely bias towards McCain." Isn't that the point? He lays out clearly and compellingly in each vlog what problem(s) he has with McCain. And if you don't like him beating up on McCain more than he does Obama, then you have a problem. I mean, why come here? I don't go to right wing vlogs so I can have some false impartiality.
The point I like to make (voting Obama btw) is that you can't truly understand whats going on if you only listen to one sided bias. In order to be an educated voter, you have to at least listen to what the other side has to so. If you don't then you will just be naive and ignorant come election day.
The problem the fat cats have is that we are already shock proof in this country and we have already gotten screwed. The only ones sweating in their britches are the ones with all the money. The rest of us are saying, "let it fail", it doesn't matter to us. They are trying to say, "but if you don't do this you can't get any more CREDIT so you can keep on spending". News flash: We aren't spending. We are tapped out. Stick your credit up your behinds.
funny I was just talking about this the other day watching CNN about the big bailout plan.
This is the same thing they did about the Iraq war, about war funding, about the Patriot Act, about FISA, about telecom immunity.
The line is "there's a crisis, it's so important that you must do what we want, fast, don't ask questions or debate the issue, just give us a clean bill so we can sign it before it's too late!"
Obediently, Congress abdicates responsibility to the panic-du-jour.
My thoughts exactly. Why do we need to do this in such a hurry? If we're going to spends a trillion in taxpayer money - shouldn't we be getting some actual tangible assets. The mismanagement of these executives - isn't that criminal? Absolutely no money FOR them, perhaps quite a bit of money FROM them.
Oppose this if you don't want to become a 3rd world nation. Oppose it now before it gets rammed down our throats.
Adversity, imbalance, authority. If you are a fool to believe that the pope knows something about god. Then you are a fool to believe the president knows something about government. It is essentially Enron Ethicality. Jeff Skilling came up with this thing about betting on the weather: Now it is a reality.
the GOP is playing a very dangerous game with the world, since the 1930's we haven't had a financial crisis as serious as this, that threatens to pull down all economies in the West and China (only Russia and some Arab countries have the ability to soften the blow to their economies), they've brought the world within a hair's breadth of full out nuclear conflict (intervention in Russia's backyard), lost most support for America in Europa and SA. This is worse than 1931,1941 AND 1962 put together
I think back in the days this would've caused a civil war, but today, you can't protest without being beaten and thrown in jail, this nation got turned into a bunch of silent brainwashed little lambs.
This is just part of the plan to turn the US into a dictatorship using Corpotatism as a government system. This will remove all human rights, implement a police state. The USA is phase one for the NWO and oneworld government with complete slavery for the masses.
I am a liberal and voting for Obama.. But I have OCD when it comes to intellectual honesty... We are useing the shock docterine too.. We are using the Disaster of the Bush administration to get Obama elected this year..
i take your point but i think NK's point is more subtle than that. the shock profiteers actually directly financially benefit from destabilizing economies and then pretending to remedy them, which is different from exploiting your opponent's failures to win an election, which is what the dems are, rightly, doing.
the repub strategy is thesis, antithesis, synthesis. create a utopian mindset (freedom, liberty, capitalism), destabilize it (911, financial collapse), then pretend to have the fix.
I disagree, GabrielGZNH, we are pointing out the shock doctrine theory to warn and caution...we can not prevent the doctrine from working again unless we understand what the doctrine is and hwowe can recognize it when it is about to happen again.
Klein's premise is wrong, there is no such thing as disaster capitalism. If this current crisis is any indication, it's "disaster socialism" that's at the root of all problems. Much of Latin America's debt crisis had more to do with their failing income-distribution (and other command economy, state-planning system) policies between 50-80s than free-market policies that came to rescue them after 80s. As is in all other economic crisiswa, this would bring unfortunately more gov't intrusion into
Naomi Klein is advocating more government intervention & regulations; without realizing that the government itself is the cause of the problem here. She doesn't understand what "free-market" means, for it's a throw-word that describes anything she doesn't like. To the contrary to her claims, most of the world's crisises were created by heavy government interventions, domestic or oversea.
are you reading the news?? do you have any idea of US politics?? it is obvious and commonly agreed that the major reason why the economy is in shambles is the deregulation the republicans have been pushing. banks have been able to give bad loans that are benefitial in the short-term for the executives, which would never be allowed if government would have imposed proper regulation.
look beyond your textbook and Klein's agenda. Most conservatives are against the current bailout (or any form of gov't intrusion or helping out Paulson's friends). The last banking deregulation came from Clinton (99); Chuck Dodd and Barney Franks are some of the fiercest defenders of the broken (and corrupt) Fannie and Freddie. This is not a "free-market failure", but a "gov't failure" that in the name of guaranteeing everyone a house and managing economy perpetuated by both parties for decades.
SOPA is threatening the internet. The NDAA is taking over our rights to a fail trial. The military is still as privatized as ever and Eisenhower was spot on when he predicted we would become too powerful for our own good. The world is getting worse everyday and our leaders have no desire to make things right.

@DanteWhite haha hahahahahaha you're clearly not in the least bit economically educated so i'm not even going to bother arguing with you. I mean it's kind of funny seeing as we've had keynesianism in place for quite a while...
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo i bet i am more economically educated than you
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@DanteWhite baha and yet you think we've had the type of free market capitalism as advocated by any prominent libertarians or conservatives. You've clearly never read any JS Mill, De Tocqueville, von mises, hayek, rothbard, or friedman seeing as you clearly have no idea what theyre talking about or that there's a difference between Keynesianism and austrianism
oJKBo 1 year ago
@DanteWhite And even though you're more economically educated than me, you're a progressive who actually thinks FDR took us out of a depression--even though he pushed us straight into it from a recession
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo do you even know what i am i clearly know about libertarianism and laissez faire and that it is not the current system in the us but i tell you that such system does not work basically because of the ethical issue of property rights its not a question of theory its a question of what is just and better for the majority of the population. piotr kropotkin made this all clear in his book the conquest of bread.another thing is that neoliberalism is very well alive today at a global level
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@DanteWhite what is just and better for the majority is the belief that every oppressive state on this earth in the last century was founded on. This type of democratic thought is foolish and dangerous. If the majority think it's better to keep your mouth shut, congratulations, everyone has just lost the right to free speech
oJKBo 1 year ago
@DanteWhite the best way to improve the economic position of every human being is by letting them make their own decisions and do what they want without violating other people's rights
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo please note that i agree on everything that libertarianism promotes even the abolition of the state or state interference in the market but we disagree on property rights and other few minor things
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@DanteWhite the abolition of the state would lead to men being enslaved by other men
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo not really because if you change property rights for example the collectivization of enterprise and if we as you said let people make their own decisions and do what they want without violating other people's rights and make those basic rights the law which would be enforced and to enforce the law and have a law you do not need the state. and about democracy trust me the majority is always right and besides they will choose what they want as long as it doesnt violate basic human rights
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@oJKBo besides democracy works better than republicanism because id rather follow what the majority has to say than what a small group of businessmen and politicians who are alien to everyday average life have to say
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@DanteWhite democracy is not better than a republic. In a republic all rights are preset and cannot be wiped away by a majority vote. In a democracy man is at the mercy to the majority. I would rather have a few hundred educated economists, philosophers, and statesmen lead a federal republic where local government is very powerful. No man, no majority has the right to erase the rights of others
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo "No man, no majority has the right to erase the rights of others" i agree with you on that
"I would rather have a few hundred educated economists, philosophers, and statesmen lead a federal republic where local government is very powerful" i dont agree
the republic extreme is bad and the democratic extreme is bad why no preset some basic human rights and then let people decide by direct democracy other issues as long as no ones basic rights are violated
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@DanteWhite 1) local governments should have more power than they do today in the US. We continue to move away from a federal republic. direct democracy cannot be national, it would have to be local where citizens of towns and cities vote for their laws. Getting 300 million people to vote on something is completely impractical--getting a few thousand is much more practical and attainable
oJKBo 1 year ago
@oJKBo well not quite, im sure with the technology available today getting a few million people to vote at a time could be practical however the idea of different towns voting for minor laws in a democratic way that doesnt infringe basic rights is not bad at all if you dont agree with the laws of the town you move to another one more compatible with your preferences sounds goood
DanteWhite 1 year ago
@oJKBo i also forgot to say that even tough the federal reserve is a central banking system and its supposedly part of the state it is actually privately owned
so trust me i am against the federal reserve as much as you
DanteWhite 1 year ago
All economic jargons n theories are just theories . Real reason is that FED belongs to private individuals who formed cartel since the time of President Wilson. Bankers knew baby boomers of the fifties are withdrawing their money from investments why? they are retiring Before it happens bankers create a climate of depression by contracting money frm market abrubtly after building an artificial boom from property mkt.and other markets. After the bubble burst their plan comes to effect.
111256able 2 years ago 2
in my mind two things caused the financial crisis: (1) Greenspan artificially lowering the interest rate to 1% for years and (2) the repeal of the Glass-Steagle Act allowing bankers to take riskier loans with peoples' money.
iwinallarguments29 2 years ago 2
One more factor is Bill Clinton getting Freddie Mac to lower it's credit requirement for giving home loans.

Naomi Klein calls wrongly corporatism, capitalism. She also blames deregulation which is really wrong. There was some deregulation, however it was under a socialist assumption that the government would socialize the risk. So the government created the moral hazard. The real culprit is the Federal Reserves control over money.
return135 2 years ago
Actually sorry but that is capitalism. There wasnt' some de-regulation, there was a LOT of it, pushed by business and politicans that kept saying that it was capitalism and anything else was socialism and so anti-capitalist.
At the heart of lassaiz faire capitalism is the goal of maximizing profits while minimizing losses.
Unrestrained capitalism inevetibly leads to corporatism since it capitalism only says buisness is privately owned, not that business can't own the government.
booley 2 years ago
You don't sound very educated in economics so i ask you, what was "deregulated"? Also, do you have any clue about the role of the Federal Reserve? Have you ever heard or read about the Austrian Business Cycle theory? You seem to have a very limited and distorted view of laissez faire capitalism. Its people like you who are advocate interventionist policies that cause the corporatism.
return135 2 years ago 2

I don't know why she makes the distinction other than she likes the party in power when it is a bail out.
mthomas1776 2 years ago
I can see a distinction.
I see 3 important questions in regards to both.
Who is getting the money?
How is it being spent?
And What are we likely getting in return?
Personally I think making sure people don't slide even farther into a hole because they cant find jobs will help a lot more then helping banks buy up smaller banks.
I could be wrong. But time will tell and I am willing to give it shot.
booley 2 years ago
If you see the distinction, would you share?
I don't know your methodological justification for thinking that handing out money willy-nilly does anyone good. Could you explain?
How do you get to "give it a shot" with other people's money? I would like to give my bank account a shot, please send a check -- ???
mthomas1776 2 years ago
No there is a big difference between the stimulus and the TARP.
The stimulus was an investment in the economy, to stop the job losses, and prime the pump. If the government invests, the thought is that private investors will too.
Those with money are hiding it under their mattresses- we need them to invest again.
I agree with Klein's theory on the bailout, but countries historically have always protected their banks. That's why we enacted New Deal laws, because of 1929.

There is no disclosure of many assets that the Treasury Department has paid for.
Any payment on overvalued mortgages with a "Hold" till their values come back up is not allowing the rest of the economy to recover.

Uh-huh!

When a business cannot fail because of government backing, one makes terrible decisions.
Moreover, subsequent to the collapse of these socialist babies...there was and EXPANSION of government not a decrease!

Klein is such an intellectual light weight, my guess is that she blew up Milton Friedmans supposed idea of "the shock doctrine" to avoid having to deal with any of his real ideas found in any of his books.

Daley, a top Obama backer, was an in-house lobbyist."
iTellYouNoLie 3 years ago
The Washington Post notes both campaigns have uncomfortable ties to Freddie and Fannie
Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, was president of the Homeownership Alliance, which advocates the expansion of homeownership through low-interest mortgages funded by Fannie and Freddie. Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., who is heading McCain's vice presidential vetting panel, was a lobbyist for Fannie Mae. Mark Buse, a longtime McCain aide, lobbied for Freddie Mac before returning to McCain's Senate staff.

What does conplaining about Obama and not liking Barr have to do with anything anyway? There are three other people in this race. One of them will get my vote.

So watch TYT and Fox News, right siegristrm?
Fox has already ruined 2 elections. Both of which kept the current president in office, my (and this country's) least favorite president, Bush. I think I'll keep watching TYT and ignore the Fox news-esque right wing bias.
edgehead62888 3 years ago
Actually you should watch the free press from outside the U.S. if you want the truth. The Real News is about the only one I can think of off the top of my head that comes close to the truth in the U.S. TYT and Fox certainly don't.

You must be new to the show. Cerk was Republican who voted for McCain in 2000. Now Cerk has woken up to reality. Republican are liars and have never been for smaller Gov. Nor less spending. Regan= Debt. Bush41 = Debt. Clinton= surplus. Bush= debt. Why would anyone defend McSame. When he nor his party does nothing but Fuck the USA.
bfum 3 years ago
Hardly new to the show at all. Been around long enough to see that you pick and choose your facts. I never defended McCain. I wouldn't vote for him if they held my feet to the fire.

"He is extremely bias towards McCain." Isn't that the point? He lays out clearly and compellingly in each vlog what problem(s) he has with McCain. And if you don't like him beating up on McCain more than he does Obama, then you have a problem. I mean, why come here? I don't go to right wing vlogs so I can have some false impartiality.
Nominay 3 years ago
The point I like to make (voting Obama btw) is that you can't truly understand whats going on if you only listen to one sided bias. In order to be an educated voter, you have to at least listen to what the other side has to so. If you don't then you will just be naive and ignorant come election day.
siegristrm 3 years ago 2
I watch both sides. I am just not a Cenk fan. There are plenty of other political commentators that have more knowledge and are more accurate.

People have lost their values but more importantly there backbone. What we need is a wave of independant critical thinking in north american culture.

GabrielGZNH 3 years ago
i take your point but i think NK's point is more subtle than that. the shock profiteers actually directly financially benefit from destabilizing economies and then pretending to remedy them, which is different from exploiting your opponent's failures to win an election, which is what the dems are, rightly, doing.
the repub strategy is thesis, antithesis, synthesis. create a utopian mindset (freedom, liberty, capitalism), destabilize it (911, financial collapse), then pretend to have the fix.
highway234 3 years ago
Sure, we did not create the disaster, the is the work of the reublicans.. I totally agree with you..
GabrielGZNH 3 years ago
I disagree, GabrielGZNH, we are pointing out the shock doctrine theory to warn and caution...we can not prevent the doctrine from working again unless we understand what the doctrine is and hwowe can recognize it when it is about to happen again.
democratatheart 3 years ago
Klein's premise is wrong, there is no such thing as disaster capitalism. If this current crisis is any indication, it's "disaster socialism" that's at the root of all problems. Much of Latin America's debt crisis had more to do with their failing income-distribution (and other command economy, state-planning system) policies between 50-80s than free-market policies that came to rescue them after 80s. As is in all other economic crisiswa, this would bring unfortunately more gov't intrusion into
tooltalk 3 years ago
And yet the countries with the most stable economies is the heavily taxed and regulated nations of northern Europe.
qanazir 3 years ago 5
Naomi Klein is advocating more government intervention & regulations; without realizing that the government itself is the cause of the problem here. She doesn't understand what "free-market" means, for it's a throw-word that describes anything she doesn't like. To the contrary to her claims, most of the world's crisises were created by heavy government interventions, domestic or oversea.
tooltalk 3 years ago
are you reading the news?? do you have any idea of US politics?? it is obvious and commonly agreed that the major reason why the economy is in shambles is the deregulation the republicans have been pushing. banks have been able to give bad loans that are benefitial in the short-term for the executives, which would never be allowed if government would have imposed proper regulation.
zeptus07 3 years ago 3
look beyond your textbook and Klein's agenda.
