I find it interesting that the people who keep saying "we all pulled together after 9/11" aren't Hindu or Muslim. I think it might have to do with the threats those communities got after the attacks, because everyone with a turban was "the enemy".
Unfortunately the terrroists were bang-on on what would topple the American Empire. A single day's acts of airline terrorism cost the US trillions, ruined their economy and compromised their basic rights and freedoms.
My worst memory was walking up John Street after the first impact and finding papers fluttering down onto the street as we walked along. I picked one up and it was an interoffice memo from United Airlines about vacation time. I looked at it curiously (it was NOT singed, but it was covered with brownish red spatters). I dropped it quickly when I realised why it smelled like blood. That memo belongs at the memorial, not some damn imaginary religious symbol.
What about the Muslims, Jews, Hindi, Buddhists, etc, among the Atheists that died that day to be insulted by a cross at ground zero. I may be an Atheist, but still have respect for believers in blind faith, as long as they don't try to kill or restrict others that disagree.
I agree that the tragedy of Sept. 11 pulled us all together.
BUT... our country's excessive fear-mongering, war-mongering, international human rights abuses and domestic compromise of our cherished civil liberties has torn us apart.
It certainly did bring us together, but I think we are more splintered now than we ever have been... and yes, our reputation abroad is much worse than it's ever been as well. It's sad because, we, the citizens, aren't so bad as individuals... on average. Our government just makes us look awful. All this heightened security, fear mongering, and other bullshit just sickens me.
@tattooskin72-we, the citizens, aren't so bad as individuals... on average.
Define bad? I think people are genetically pretty much the same everywhere, but having lived in Europe for 13 years I think in terms of arrogance, ignorance, and bigotry we're among the worst. And I didn't even mention our religiosity.

I hugged more than one complete stranger that day. I wish we could always care about each other that much, too.
Nice to see a video from you.
