@blablazo43 He is using a BJJ stlye of competing to win Judo competitions and using techniques that are very common in BJJ tournaments but not attempted often at Judo tournaments.
@socalled47 I disagree, if anything, BJJ players are using a Judo style of competing in their matches. Nothing Flavio is doing is not from Judo. How can you say that he is using a BJJ style? What is BJJ about what he is doing? Taking people to the ground and trying to pin and/or submit them has been around in Judo since Judo was started. If anything, he is using more of a Judo style than most Judo players.
@blablazo43 Yeah of course but every Judo competition I've seen they NEVER go for the finish, only the throw and Canto is going for the finish regularly. He's from Brazil also so you could bet he trains BJJ. Flavio is taking the back of Judo players (Judo guys never put the hooks in) and going for flying armbars and sweeps from the ground. Furthermore he pulls guard in a video I seen of him and 99.999% of Judo players EVER go to their back.
@socalled47 Well I agree that his style is different than most Judoka, however everything he is doing is Judo. Search for Kashiwazaki if you want to see another Judoka use this approach. This used to be a lot more common in Judo, however lately, competition players have focused on the standing aspect only. This has been changing lately however and most Judoka now are concentrating equally on standing and ground.
He trains judo under George Mehdi a man who studied under Masahiko Kimura and who teache judo to Rickson and Rolls, he does fights against BJJ competitiors, but he is Judo, from a lineage of one of the best and most complete judoka.
He trains under George Mehdi, who also teached judo to Rickson and Rollls and is a Judo BB under Masahiko Kimura (the japanese champion who effortesly destroyed Helio), the reason he is a BJJ blackbelt its mainly because his newaza its BJJ blackbelt level and a stunt from the Gracies.
It would be like giving a BB to Sakuraba or Fedor and claiming they are BJJ and not catch or sambo.
Mehdi Academy its known for its strong newaza which comes from Kimura himself, not the Gracies.
@blablazo43 Hmm, as I said, I trained with him at instituto reação, he got a bb in bjj, I'm not saying there aren't the same techniques at judo, but since he got so good at newaza he participated in some bjj comps and won. In brazil, it's very common to judo players to cross train with bjj'ers.
Saying that he never trained in bjj while I've just sparred him like last month in a bjj class is so wrong haha.
@Tezcax What I mean is, he was "awarded" a black belt in BJJ after he won a bronze medal in the Olympics. It wasn't like he started at a BJJ school at white belt and became a black belt. He learned his newaza from Judo. Sure, he trains with BJJ guys and I'm sure has learned some things from them, but BJJ cannot take credit for Canto's newaza.
@blablazo43 Hm, I understand, judo contains everything he needs, but the fact that he lives in brazil he can spar with tons of good bjj guys helped him too.
I'm not a bjj advocate or anything, judo is great and a complete grappling art.
He never started at white belt I think, but he competed as a purple and brown around 1997.
amazing...wish i could be honored in that way someday..im also a judoka and compared to him i cnt say im a newaza specialist.hehe btw what song is this?
...to a greater or lessor degree, i agree with you...unfortunately, as a strong groundworker myself, i often find my opponant grounding-out to avoid it....oddly, it is up to the referee to decide how long before "matte", as "progression" is subjective...i'm sure when you play a lessor judo player, you destroy him when he turtles, but if i was against someone who concentrated on groundwork alot, i too, would avoid your ground tricks...it is the same in all sports...chin-up, killer...go git em
i love the ground work...really solid...BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING TO JUDO TODAY>>>...i mean, really, the guy rolls softly on his back and it's ippon?....i thought ippon had to be forceful on back....i miss the days of no koka/yukos....
I truly love judo, the power and grace of its techniques, and it's deceivingly simple principles...HOWEVER, the competitions are something that irritate me to no end. Don't know if it's due to the fact that I come from BJJ, but seeing friggin' black belts with so many years of experience simply flatten themselves to avoid ground combat is so degrading to an art as complete as Judo.
i agree..it saddens me too..especially if some referees call matte when the game is progressing well..once it happend to me, but shamefully after a poorly executed, osoto gari..
@Fabyfakid Well, one could say that bjj competitors (and bjj training in general) avoid nage waza. The point is, it's thanks to Judo's strong emphasis on nage waza, and bjj's strong emphasis on newaza, that the two styles are so advanced in their respective fields.
actually, the official olympic and IJF rules are that an ippon is awarded when: "a contestant with control throws the other contestant largely on his back with considerable force and speed"
