  • I have a question I've been dying to ask someone like you. I just love this type of solo jazz organ by itself. I can listen to it for hours. No drums, no guitar, no bass; just the organ alone. So my question is what would this be called and where can I find more? Is it called anything? Is there a list of musicians who play this way only? I'd love to know.

  • @bostero1 Hi ! Its called screwing around with nothing better to do... :-) but I think I see what you're getting at... Jackie Davis played organ with the pedals - - I'm using my LH (though he was accompanied sometimes.) I'd suggest checking him out. Buddy Cole is another one (Have Organ, Will Swing) Not solo, but with the full sound... To be honest I can't think of a lot of recordings with organ only, but I think you'll like them for starters.

  • that C1 sure sounds good........got my self a clone,a Oberheim/Viscount organ....."wannabeB3" LoL! but i like it.

  • @MrKeys57 Before the new generation of clones came out the Oberheim/Viscount was THE only choice ! ! ! By the way I was in Jonkoping a month after 9/11. I played at a number of venues in the South of Sweden, then went up North to Stockholm and Borlange. I remember there was a big river, and I stayed at a guitarist's place on the "other side".

  • @JCJasion I just found your message - - I know it was a few years ago... Sowwie!

Stan "The Man" Harrison... yes... How's he doing ??? I forgot what I paid. I think I traded it for sexual favors with a drunk homeless person who had it sitting in a bag... long time ago... can't recall the full story.

  • Mr. Landsberg, what kind of reverb or echo do you like to use? I believe you mentioned "hall" setting, but do I hear a delay on this?

  • @Mooser42001 Hi ! Wow, it was so long ago... I wish I could recall. The big issue is I like it wet, but to have a springy after effect because that's how a real Hammond sounds. Sometimes I use a really small amount of delay. If I'm playing solo, I'd put on a lot more reverb... live its just enough to make it sound like its bouncing off a wall.

  • @EddieLandsberg, Thanks so much for that informative and quick answer! Now here's the big question: is delay-echo part of getting a good "squabble". I can get a half-assed squabble going, but I get the impression, when I listen to your right-hand work here, that the delay echo is a (necessary) part of producing the effect?

Thanks for that info on how you use reverb.

  • This is quite nice!

Think I'm gonna get into practicing that track now :D (Only knew it for the sax actually...)

  • Sounds wonderful, Im just wondering. are you playing part of the bass line with your left hand and part of it with the pedal board?

  • @DDigital100 Sorry for the slow reply ! ! ! Left hand bass... I didn't have pedals back then, but even if I did, pedals would be used for taps and accents...

  • SUPER !!!!! krása jak zvuk, tak hra -prostě nádhera !!!!

  • Also...is there anyway you can just do a quick demo vid on how to do that classic hammond trick at 2:36. It looks easy but I'm not sure why Im having a hard time with it. I know a lot of it is the percussion setting but yeah. Thanks

  • Thank you for your comments... If you want the truth I'm not really a technique driven player... I play what I feel... Both extremes have positives and negatives... i.e. no soul vs. sloppiness... I did this video a few years ago... My playing is probably way better now, but if you asked me to replay any given lick EXACTLY as on the video, I couldn't... I can tell you how I practice... (to be con't...)

  • Lovely greasy sound with that last drawbar on (with the first 3). You are really good at working the expression pedal. I wish I could do it as well as you. ...practice practice I guess lol

  • *con't...

I go over and over the chords and bass line, then start trying to match up what I hear in my head to my fingers. Frank Zappa, no Jazz man for sure said the secret of soloing is getting your fingers in the right place and making them dance... that advice (from his bio) inspired me... Its true even for Jazz... As for the lick... its a Hammer On... think like a drummer, and practice and go 1+uh 2+uh 3+uh over and over (triplets) I think Jimmy Smith used his 1st and 2nd (con't)

  • con't pt. 3

    (con't 3) ...finger, but I do 1 and 3.

Another thing that's helped me (recently, sadly AFTER recording my last CDs) was learning to sing and play some drums. If you can sing and understand basic Jazz rhythms, you can really connect your brain with the keyboard... then you can find balance between soul (feel) and technique (chops.) Hope this helps !!!

  • con't 4...

Regarding the expression pedal... try this trick. If you can, kill the Leslie... and try to use your foot to emulate the warmth and "wah" of the Leslie... Also remember, the organ isn't a piano, so the EXPRESSION pedal is literally just that... it gives the organ expression, so learn how to use it like a paint brush and use it to dab on the chords... and connect the feel with the sounds...

  • Thanks for your advice! I'll definitely take that into consideration when I play. Looking forward to hearing more of your stuff.

  • deffo not my kinda music but ur a very talented player for sure man... andyou can certainly make that organ sing... good stuff matey

  • very warm sound great

  • nice nice nice nice nice

  • how is tokio life?

  • Very Very Nice!!!

  • Eddie, buying your books and studying them has been one of the best things I could do. I remember having a great chat with your dad, as well!

You're hands down one of my favorite Hammond players. I am seriously dedicating more time to kill what I know of the Hammond and re-study it. It feels impossible to get it together..but I keep trying with method. I am seriously considering reaching you in Japan to dedicate some of my life to study with you. I'd work nights anytime to pay for it! -Alberto.

  • Thanks for the kind words... I'm trying to get my website back up and my life back together... also just got a pedal set for the NORD so will post some videos... few people have heard me sing or really work out on the pedals... they add a whole new dimension!

  • Great news, I'm gonna make sure I stay in touch :) thanks again.

  • What kind of amp are you using--You can make the note's stutter or flutter like a real B 3====??-------Great stuff Charlie

  • An old Behringer KX1200 that I bought for $150 ! ! ! Secret of the flutter is learning how to work the expression pedal... The Leslie effect on the unit is GREAT, but if you can work the expression pedal, you almost don't need a Leslie (even with a B-3.)

  • WOW If i could play like this..

Thanks to player, give me something to dream :)

  • note: struggling to pay bills... find more profitable thing to dream about... ;-) Thanks for the kind words.

  • Great playing :-)

    thx a lot

  • Great, man. :)

From musician to musician; are you using a pedalboard as well?

    Best regards..

  • I just bought a pedal board... hope to post some videos...it definitely adds a new dimension, even if you're just tapping... My time is better when I have pedals... in this video, there was no pedal board.

  • great job-it's too bad left hand bass never comes thru laptop speakers loud enough

  • suPeR!!!!

  • the best sound!!!

  • Fantastic playing and an awesome instrument. Sparkling!

  • Fantastic playing and a awesome instrument. Sparkling!

  • Nice playing, great sound. Yeah, I'd love to have one of these. ;-)

  • such a nice playing!....wouh!

    thx for posting

  • This clone must be a hard rival for the new Hammond organs.(sound vs price)

    Nice playing!

  • that's some great playing... you began classically trained? Thanks for the video, I bought one of those but the electro II version and seeing how it's handled, especially the digital drawbars, is very good info

  • Thx. I'm mostly self trained with coaching from Big John Patton and Shirley Scott. Thinking of getting some MIDI pedals within the week.

  • very nice plays..

  • My dad has been drooling over these organs since he saw one up at summerfest last year... they sound as close to the original as you can get. I just can't talk him into saving the money for it.

  • That´s amazing! =)

  • Damnnnnnn! that aint even a real fuckin Hammond,u got

Skills.the Hammond Organ company should donate a Real

B3 Organ to you. thanks for posting that.

  • I demonstrated for NORD ages ago... they made quite a few promises to me, didn't keep one important one and after the company was sold told me I'm not MADONNA and wouldn't take my call even though they were still using my sh*t... still I have to say, even if they dumped a bucket of vomit on my head, I wouldn't say anything bad about the their product... it beats the old choice of herniated back vs. crappy sound. Thanks for your kind words...

  • Wow, these nord people are real asses. Love your playing!

  • hi eddie done that video yet on drawbars? thx Gary

  • Might have something up in a few days...

mentally exhausted running the shop... dealing with this and that...

and so on and so forth...

  • I'm going nuts... moving my shop to a new location and this and that... Please stand by!

  • my drummer rigged an old Hammond B200 swell pedal with leslie footswitch to work on the NORD! it works great. He said he could make a business out of it! haha anyone interested let me know. Need either an X5 or B200 pedal though to be modified.

  • Are midi-footbasspedals available for this organ?

  • not specifically for the NORD bit the ROland PK 5 or PK 7A are the best. However the PK7A cost almost £1000 but have a swell pedal with on/off rotary which is cool. my drummer rigged an old Hammond B200 swell pedal with leslie footswitch to work on the NORD! it works great. • eddie I just got my Nord C1. this was the first video I saw that got my interest. I love it!

can u tell me what exact Drawbar and effects setting you have there?

do u use vibrato/chorus? delay? which harmonics?

    etc really appreciate it thanks

  • I'll make you a deal... mark your calander 30 days from now and e-mail me... My C1 is at a club but it'll be back in my shop then and I'll shoot you a video and go through my whole theory of drawbar setting and manipulation... its really simple!

  • great thanks eddie, look forward to it!

  • Great and thanks for uploading! Chord selections, progressions and riffs are very inspiring. I can use all the help I can get!

  • Thanks... I can use all the help I can get too... psychologically as well as musically.

My own chord system is 98% block chord derived. I used thirds and sevenths, then add other tones to the positions... lot's of 7 3 5 and 3 5 9 type voicings... stuff like that.

  • It's a beautiful clone, and your playing is awesome, but (in my humble opinion) there are waaay too many Jimmy Smiths out there. =/ First three drawbars are always on 8's and the percussion could shatter glass. Why don't more people play like Jesse Crawford and the like? I've got a Hammond B2, no need for percussion. Laurens gave us nine drawbars and bass pedals for a reason. =p

  • I think there's room out there for a wide variety of styles. If you watch the full video you'll see that I open up and am playing block chords... My primary influence is Wild Bill Davis, actually. I respect JOS for finding a roll for the organ in modern Jazz, but he isn't my top influence.

  • Hey Eddie, the C1 sounds great! I have your video, The Seven Sins, oh wait, The Seven Secrets. Ha! This is one great sound, especially considering direct to camera. We need more of these good old jazz standards. Post more, please! I'm about convinced to buy me a C1. Thanks Eddie, you are extremely talented.

  • Thanks Jeff for those kind words... I really want to do a new video... that was like 6 years ago and I lost 100lbs on Atkins since... Regretably

the videos are too big for me to handle alone, but too small to handle with the staff I need... Very frustrating. My method has evolved 100% since then!

  • perfeito lindo demais,,,, esse cara toca muito, parabéns,,,, nunca vi nada igual,,,lindo lindo lindo,,,gostaria de saber de onde ele é pois toca muito ,

  • Thanks... Actually I view stand more as a spiritual role model than a friend.

The C1 lists around $4,000 (here in Japan), but you can get it for quite a bit less. They get you on the accessories like the softcase, sheet music stand and all that stuff.

  • Nice playing on all the vids.

    I bought a C1 just before X-mas.

Got a set of pedals to and the Gigbag to go with the C1.

I have tried it next to a real B running both organs through the same leslie and amp. Very close indeed. (i spent 7 years rebuilding an L100). The C1 makes me smile each time i play it.

It sounds great through headphones and is very inspiring to play.

  • Hey thanks ! Its amazing how far technology has come... I was one of the people who just a few years ago was saying, "Nothing will ever come close to a B-3... Either you play a real B-3 or don't call yourself an organist..." I take it back...

  • wow... i must have had watched it several times... impressive, man... keep on playing, the C1 deserves it!

  • Thanks for the kind words... Ironically, I love the C1 more than any rig I've ever had, but I rarely play out these days.

  • very very good!! excelente job, sound, song...

  • Top notch playing! Aside from your really high-level performance, I was surprised to hear what capabilities this little affordable, light weight Nord C1 has.

  • Thanks ! Its definitely a lifesaver though I'm p.o.'d at CLAVIA... They shipped the units For Sale in Japan, but soft cases won't be available until OCTOBER... so I had to get a hard case which adds un-necessary weight... Still... Sound is great... Did my first live show on it... I felt REALLY comfortable!

  • めっちゃええで!!

  • what speakers are you using? is it the internal rotary through a regular speaker or are u using a Leslie?

  • No speakers (!) - - direct line into the camera (!)

All effects are the inboard effects from the C1...

(The secret is a combination of the great Leslie/Chorus/Vibrato the unit has... however, juicing up the reverb and clever use of the EQ and expression pedal ups the ante. (Haven't upgraded yet!)

  • is there no footswitch to turn on tremolo? (leslie effect) do u have to do it by hand button on console?

  • Yeah, there is. You can use a regular sustain pedal... There's also a half moon switch you can get. I had it disconnected that day. (I have a new toy poodle pup and anything with a wire that I leave laying around gets chewed on.)

  • is there no footswitch to turn on the tremolo? do you have to do it by hand?

  • How hard is it to switch presets while performing. I remember I hate to press two buttons on my Nord Electro and it was a PAIN!

  • Sounds so nice Eddie! I may have one of those freshly recapped "living room" variety 1969 B-3 sounding organs. (Except is has not been freshly recapped) I have a couple uploaded videos and you can hear how bright and clean it sounds. (I am a amateur) Keep on Swinging, love it!

  • own your instructional video and just bought your latest cd on amazon("them that swingeth") thanks for the free stuff your putting up on youtube keep up the good work

  • Very cool, Ed san...The Nord seems to be catching everyone's attention and you're demonstrating it magnificently.

  • Eddie, this is TIGHT! I've been a B200 Player for over 20 odd years in the cabaret clubs in UK. I always through out their B3's, B3000's A100's and replaced them with a B200 because of the the more dextrous pedal unit, I play pedals quite well and found those big wooden pedals clumsy and not responsive enough for pops playing etc. However, the B3 sound is the best ever! the reason I'm so fascinated with your Nord C1 is that the sound is actually 'better'?

  • Hi Gazzeel... Of course: nothing beats a *vintage* tonewheel console. The "NEW" B-3 is a digital instrument. I think if you compare the C1 and "New" B-3 to a B-3, the C1 sounds closer. As for pedals, the New B-3's pedal set is great... but (by necessity) heavy and bulky. Personal speaking I regret chopping my A-100, and find it a problem with "modular" rigs: taking apart and putting them together makes it MORE of a pain. I say the "new" B-3 offers RELIABILITY, but its only RELATIVELY portable.

  • Hi ! Thx for the kind words. I think that the New B3 is INCREDIBLE, but lacks in the bite and balls department... Even Native B4 beats it out... too clean, though that's how some freshly recapped "living room" variety B-3s sound. But nothing beats an "on its last leg" roadster.

    - -got the C1 a few weeks ago -- haven't tried updating it... Thx for the reminder - - Not a John Lord type player, but I accept your challenge. Check back in a few days...

  • Thanks for accepting the "challenge", I'm looking forward to it... I would love to hear that Nord screaming with the new overdrive from the new OS (ok, I've never heard the old OS overdrive also =P, but they said it got FATTER). It's a shame that I can't put my fingers on this baby yet. BTW, I like this JOS' or Reuben's style you play, very much... I didn't knew that you had some recorded cds and video lessons, I imagined that you were not just an amateur YouTuber, you rocks ;)

  • Hi! When you say "but the sound is a bit better" are you reffering to the C1 being better or the New B3? BTW, great playin', you rocks!

Is your C1 with the latest Clavia updates? I've heard that new leslie and overdrive are even better.

Can you record something Jon Lord like? I mean, with a lot of overdrive, just to see how it goes. Thanks, and congratulations.

  • Thanks - - No Hammond - - just the NORD (C1). Pretty amazing, huh ??? Just came out... I really regret having paid over $10,000 for a "new B-3 portable" - - this this is only 1/5 the weight... only a fraction of the cost... but the sound is a bit better.

  • I have to say this does sound better than the real thing coz it's brighter, more bite, more top end but not too much. Im in love with it already! I want one.

  • Actually, it has three EQ knobs... treble, mid and bass... (!)(!)(!)

  • Awesome Eddie. Takes me back, What machine is that? is it some kinda synth on the top? is the Hammond underneath?

  • Nice vid Eddie, great demonstration of how its done. Keep up the good work. BTW, you all check out this man's jazz course Seven Secrets of Jazz & Soul. Great for organists and pianists covering jazz theory in a very unique way.

  • Thanks for the plug... ! ! ! I just uploaded a blues video... that's the one with chunk sound you asked about...

  • Thx... Canon GL2 cam... direct line...

    Any requests?

  • Hey- nice rendition of Days of Wine and Roses! Great audio too...
