  • what happened to the episodes?

  • Reilly has to be one of the most fascinating men I've read about. "The Ace of Spies" is a wonderful documentation of his life.

  • The fucking russians got him.

  • The lead was played by Sam Neil.

  • Used to love watching this show as a teen in the evening. I think the guy that used to be in Rumpole of the Bailey was also in it?

  • @xr6lad yes, it was Leo McKern who played Rumpole of the Bailey and Basil Zaharoff in this one

  • @Giuelith wasn't the claim as a double agent made clear in the series.... his British employers suspected he was a double agent for the Russians, or were working with him to play the role of double agent ??

  • thank-you, for the memories

  • Beautiful video, and music of course. What a mystery the man Sidney Reilly remains even to this day! I've read several books about him and still... no has figured him out.

  • This beautiful theme is taken from "Romance" -- a cue from incidental music for the film "The Gadfly" (1955) -- by the 20th-century Russian classical composer Dmitri Shostakovich

  • lovely for the soul....great pics and have a lovely day

  • old days T_T

  • Guys, Sidney Reilly was James Bond. The author of the bond series patterned his character after the success of Reilly.

  • What a perfect melding of the music with the old black & white scenes - so evocative, you were transported back to that time!

  • Beautiful piece of music - thanks for helping me trace it. What a fantastic programme Reilly is, it deserves to be on main TV and Sam Neill should have been a James Bond!

  • I loved the series too. I thought Sam Neill who played Reilly, could've easily played James Bond. The real Reilly influenced Ian Fleming in creation of James Bond.

  • I loved the series on tv. It's being repeated on UKTV History at the moment. How well the era was recreated (as seen in video stills above). Beautiful haunting theme music - I fell in love with it. thanks for this chance to hear it again.

  • Most beautiful peace of music ever made...

  • Yes, a beautiful melody by Shostakovich. I would love to see the series again (here in Australia).

Fascinating: The tune is a movie theme by Shostakivich for 'The Gadfly', which is based on a novel by one of Reilly's girlfriends (forgot name), and Reilly was her mindimage for the character. The novel was very successful in the young USSR, hence the film and the tune returned to the original character in this BBC series!

(Info from cutting room floor for my Plevitskaya novel.)

  • It was Ethel Lilian Voynich who wrote The Gadfly, first published in 1897 and available online.

  • thanks for this, I had read in that novel a few years ago, but had forgotten the details.

I have ordered the DVDs of the series, but as life goes, it'll probably be on AUS TV when I've got them.

  • Well done. Thanks.

  • I loved this series on PBS.

Can't believe it was broadcast so many years ago! I seem to remember it like yesterday.

  • Ché bella aria. La amo.

  • Great pictures to go with the music

  • beautiful.
