  • this is my all time fave record always gives me the shivers

  • Love how the piano goes well with this beautiful song, would love to be able to sing while playing piano; Dreamcometrue# :')xxxx

  • don't agree azpo...there are many lots of black women and lots of white women..lena, shore, etc. there are many singers that top the chart....roberta is one. oh did i mention toni braxton...the total package.....

  • Thank you for posting this! I love this song and I love Roberta singing this song! I think she has a beautiful deep rich tone to her voice that is seldom heard by singers now. Gave me the chills. Excellent!

  • Brilliant.....

  • its amazing how music can hit your soul (damn!)

  • Well will you listen to that. No superfluous misconfigured autotune, no egregious riffing. Just simple vocal perfection wrapped up in a tasteful arrangement of a timeless piece of music. Doesn't get much better than that.

  • What a beautiful tribute to one's soulmate! Mrs. McColl was a lucky woman.

  • From youtubers heart......thank you so very much Roberta......

  • My father told me this story when I was a child. The Shell in Hawaii in the early 70's saw my parents backstage at a Roberta Flack Concert. This song is preceeded by a string prelude, which sounds like the wind... its beautiful. She began to play, and to sing. When she finished, the audience demanded she sing it again, and she did. Several times. By the end of it, the audience was in tears and she was overcome, she had to leave the stage. I am certain she remembers that night. Heaven.

  • @Diomedea7 You know what, we missed out on a lot of good live performances in the time before video....when live musicians were used more than backing tracks on stage, and excellence was still valued. Thanks for sharing that wonderful story.

  • Roberta Flack is absolutely the greatest!. My husband and I enjoyed her wonderful concert at the Salem, VA Civic Center back in the 90's. We love her!!! Jerry and Peggy Thompson

  • From 1972 to now- this song from its first few notes- I stop in my tracks, close my eyes, and just- cry!!!! To SEE her sing it- is even more awe inspiring.

  • Her Voice is simply Amazing, she has been blessed with such a voice....

  • Her voice is what moves the wind that lifts the leaves, that nudges this stiff, sleeping stone awake again.

  • Not sure if Peggy's middle name is Sue, but she is the half-sister to Peter Seeger and brother of Mike Seeger, both traditional music icons. She married Ewan MacColl, who also wrote the classic 'Dirty Old Town'.

  • what a gift!

  • thats an amazing voice, haunting, soulful, lyrical, smoky

  • Just because love this song doesn't make me gay...........right? lol

  • The First time...............

  • SHE IS SINGING ABOUT A LOVE JONES.

  • She has a lovely distinctive voice.....

  • A song that takes me back to a special time in my life. thank you for posting it.

  • I have loved this song since the first time I heard it on the radio, riding in my parent's car. It feels like it puts me in another dimension every time I hear it. I have to stop what I'm doing and just close my eyes and listen. Her voice is so incredible.

  • I too, from the first time I heard Roberta perform this song have considered it the most beautiful love song written and performed, and if you listen to the vinyl recording it's even more so as she sings it slower and more sensual than she does in her live recordings.

  • This is how I felt the first time I saw and heard the love of my life - This is how I feel now, and will until the day I die - I love you Del xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Greatest love song ever written/recorded...perfection. Love's first glance personified.

  • I Don't say this lightly, due to absolutes being so over used. But Roberta flack has the greatest female voice ever. So beautiful..and this from a 6'5" 245 pound tough guy. Shes amazing.

  • @azpowerhitter Man your so right, I completely agree with you. It's just so haunting and beautiful, just the best. My Dad used to watch her in DC in the old days, said she was just something else.

  • @azpowerhitter I have to agree. I heard this song again watching Play Misty for Me and I just thought her voice was is so clear and strong and seems like it takes her no effort to sound so good.

  • @azpowerhitter Thank you Roberta.......

  • Singing from the SOUL, such depth and feeling. how could ANYONE possibly dislike this???

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever.

Still moves me all these years later.

    Kimmy

  • 1 person has never been in love :0(

  • i love you Darius. yOU'RE BEAUTIFUL.

  • SERIOUSLY THIS SING IS SOOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL THAT I HAVE TO YELL IT TO THE GODS!!!!!!!!!!

  • for akid in the early 70s this song meant true love

  • I see Leona Lewis has a version. I could live a lifetime without hearing her all-over-the- place, pitchy voice destroy this song. I first heard this song in college and was in awe. I knew of Roberta Flacks music with Donny Hathaway, but did not know much of her solo work.

  • THE FIRST TIME EVER I HEARD THIS SONG, I WAS ABOUT 10-11 YEARS OLD AND MY MOM HAD THE "LP" AND I WAS GOING THROUGH HER CATALOG(OF OVER 4 TO 500 ALBUMS AT THE TIME) AND SHE PUT IT ON AND TOLD ME THIS IS WHAT SHE THOUGHT WHEN SHE HAD ME.....(TEAR/SMILE) IT IS A SONG FOR A STRONG LOVE.

  • @DARIUSSR612 Please switch off the caps lock on your keyboard, brother.

It's like the Internet equivalent of shouting in a peaceful and mellow cafe.

And it somewhat ruins a lovely anecdote that you're sharing? Peace man!

  • @ArchangelBoab THIS IS WHAT I DO BOAB, MY STYLE.

  • @DARIUSSR612 FAIR PLAY TO YOU DARIUS. FAIR PLAY. ALL THE BEST BRUV.

  • @DARIUSSR612 aint no problem<-------HOW WAS THAT!!!

  • THE FIRST TIME EVER I HEARD THIS SONG, I WAS ABOUT 10-11 YEARS OLD AND MY MOM HAD THE "LP" AND I WAS GOING THROUGH HER CATALOG(OF OVER 4 TO 500 ALBUMS AT THE TIME) AND SHE PUT IT ON AND TOLD ME THIS IS WHAT SHE THOUGHT WHEN SHE HAD ME.....(TEAR/SMILE)

  • Song brings back memories of being so young and falling in love.

    Thanks, Superman!

  • @LeftyLadybug ITS WHAT I DO, YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW,FOREVER, ALWAYS, ETERNALLY, IT IS WHAT I DO!!

  • 3:16 - Roberta rocking those afro puffs! what a beautiful song by a such a talented songtress! Thank you Ms. Flack for all of your beautiful music.

  • Matt's is good, I'll grant you, but his voice is flat in places and he's too nervous... I bet he'd sing it really well in his own concert in about a year...he'll go far :)

  • True story - I met a very beautiful young lady while stationed in Turkey abut 15 years ago. I took her out for Valentaines day to a local resturaunt. American music was playing softly in the background, and this song came on. Roberta's natural unstrained voice just moved me - unbelievable. So there I sat trying to hide these tears that were pooling in my eyes. Talk about embarrasing. No one can touch her version and give it the passion and justice as she did.

  • who's here cuz of "Play Misty for Me"

  • @NoMansLandProduction Play Misty was the first time I heard it.

  • What utter beauty in her performance... many pretenders, but NONE come near her pathos, her control and her sincerity....

  • @stdeclan2005 That is when I first became aware of this beautiful song in that movie.

  • Just love it.. love it.

  • She played here at the Vancouver Island Music Festival last year.

Now I know why her last name is 'FLACK'.

A performer who is a 1 hit wonder who continues to pimp her ride from this one great moment.

She constantly harassed organizers & sound crews with her issues. When it came to performing she sucked and to top it all off she harassed the audience because she didn't want them taking her picture or possibly recording what a shitty job she was doing on stage. Not worth the money.

  • @gragor11 First of all, she is far from a one hit wonder, you ignorant ass. She's had several hits. And second of all, the "shitty" job you allege she did on stage is YOUR perspective. If she was so bad, why did you check this video out having already heard her live and take time to comment? Get a life honey.

  • You can get the audio-mp3 of this song at grabyourmp3 doht cohm.

  • omg she has inspired so many artist even french singer mylene farmer she put this song at the start of her video for appelle mon numero (call my number) check it out!

  • Leona Lewis wrecked this song.

The X factor is destroying true talent in music. Think about it. We are being assaulted, its as bad as war. We need a revolution and soon.

  • @Incudius watch matt cardles version now that is amazing!

  • @StephenMcManus2K10 yes, maybe for you. He does not even come close to Roberta Flack.

  • @wazzaable1 this version is shite compared to his its way to fast

  • This song reminds me of my childhood in Beautiful California, and about the time this song was released.

  • can't stop watching this one

  • Ty Dobrie for sending and Junkie Jay for posting.

  • thank God for the BBC who recorded this video of Roberta singing live for it's flag ship program Top Of The Pops

  • Perfect!!

  • There is another great version of this song in the Album "Softly With These Songs", 1993. Excellent!

  • this song makes you wanna cry. great song.

  • Clint Eastwood's "Play Misty for Me" was on cable tv late last night. I fell asleep with the tv on, and then heard this beautiful song playing in the movie while I was slipping into dreamland. I've always loved this song, and Roberta's version of it.

  • she look like oprah

  • This song makes me want to hug the whole world!!!!

  • This song makes me want to hug the whole world!!!

  • @tramp792 Here's a better idea - purchase a proper, high quality mp3 from an on-line retailer.

  • how can anyone listen to the music today and not feel a bit sad that this kind of beauty is gone today . Roberta flack is an angel . and the song is magnificent .

  • I dedicate this amazing song to my dearest beloved friend...NGE!! Sawasdee Khrup and Namaste!

  • Nice work :-) streching the song at 2min 47, the original ends there with aproximate 9 bars.

Good job, I always felt the song couldn't last long enough

  • Roberta made the defining version. After nearly 40 years, nobody has managed to equal this one.

  • Now if that doesn't have feeling to it I don't know what has!

  • the first time I saw the face of my Daughter I was hooked

  • They don't make songs like this anymore!

  • That was amazing and beautiful!

  • also its the most romantic song ever,, so so good

  • this song means so much to me,, thank you

  • dansen... heel even....

  • I first saw her when she was singing at Mr Henry's Upstairs, on Capitol Hill in DC.............before she was famous nationally, late 60s-early 70s.

One of my all time favorite songs. Also another of hers, All the Sad Young Men, I love too. I was one of them at that time.

  • Roberta you Rock!!!

  • ah essa foi a musica que ganhei de presente do meu amor,

    obrigado Bebeh!!

  • I've been listening to this song since 1972 -- but until now I had never seen Roberta's face. Beautiful. What a voice! Phrasing perfect, pitch perfect, piano wonderful. Perfect performance. Thank you for uploading this version.

  • This is one of the most stunning songs ever. Period.

  • Before she was famous, Roberta Flack taught music in school, and played in the Act Four club, nights in Washington DC. I had just got out of the army, she would always sing this to me, then ask what else I would like to hear. I still have her first record, I was enchanted!! Dennis C.

  • Just. Amazing.

  • I love this woman. This voice. Wow.

  • why is it cut at 2:46 and swiched to the beginning????

  • I think I was 15 when this song hit the radio waves. Of course, it became the theme song for every boyfriend I had over the next couple of years, which was about one a month, lol. Everytime, I thought it was the love of my life. And I wouldn't go back and change a thing even if I could. In fact, I'd give all my worldly goods to live it all over again.

  • I remember why I love to sing so much,I'd got lost somewhere but this song brings me back. How fitting for lossing time with loved ones and gaining center in the delicate balance of life.Till the end of time.

  • Classic, beautiful song.

  • Love the Princess Leia look on her.

  • God bless this beautiful lady and her angelic voice. She was born to sing this song.

  • Loved this song back then and still feels new..

  • Contray to popular belief Ms Flack version was originally on her 1969 debut album First Take. My mother had the original vinyl and it was 5:22 minutes long.

  • I will be married 35 years June 2010 and this was and is "our song". Just love it.

  • Just beautiful

  • i got 2 versions of this song on cd studio vr and one 45lp of the clint eastwood movie wich this was a soundtrack

  • this song really reminds me of another song, but I can't work out what it is and it's driving me nuts...

  • Etta james At Last

  • Where's the original studio recording?

  • Listen to Peggy Seeger sing it too; afterall, Ewan MacColl wrote it for her. It's here on YouTube.

  • classic, don't get any better than that.

  • Chills. I was a teen girl when this came out on radio.... and to think a guy wrote it! Wow to be the object of HIS affections, what a dream.

  • It is an amazing and comforting feeling that this will be the last song they will play for me...

  • This is dedicated to the greatest love of my life.

  • Glorious! Thank you for this beautiful song and video!

  • For me this is one of the best love songs ever written, made all the more powerful by knowing it was written by a social activist from Salford - better known for gritty working men's songs. Listen to him sing his song 'Shoals of Herring' here on youtube. It's hard to believe one man could give expression to such different songs. On top of that Roberta Flack takes this song to another level with her majestic vocal skill. Superb.

  • Do you mean "contrary to popular belief" ?lol. JunkieJay that posted this.

  • Thank you for this post..this woman sings this song from the bottom of her heart!!..Love-it:>

  • wow, that's gorgeous! thank you !

  • Will some one writing lyric for this song please !

  • google is your friend! The first time ever I saw your face I thought the sun rose in your eyes And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave To the dark and the end of the skies The first time ever I kissed your mouth I felt the earth move in my hand Like the trembling heart of a captive bird That was there at my command...my love The first time ever I lay with you And felt your heart so close to mine And I knew our joy would fill the earth And last 'til the end of time...my love
  • Thanks Kalayman85,English is not my first language once I knew lyric,The song touching to my heart more than double!!!

    Thanks again♪

  • @Klayman85 Actually the skies are endless, give it another listen. Karaoke gets it wrong every time.

  • @MARYCATKNAPIKDAGUE1 i've only copied the lyrics :)))) thx anyway

  • Beautiful performance of a beautiful song. Thanks for sharing.

  • Leona Lewis sings it beautifully on her album also.

  • This is the most romantic song I have ever heard and the best version as well !

  • Wow!!!! I was in my early teens the first time I heard this song. I believe it was #1 or 2 of the top 100 playlist. I loved it then and still do.

  • Roberta sings it beautifully, but I just discovered Mary Travers singing it with Peter Paul and Mary - it is available on YouTube and currently my favorite

  • ...I can't stop to hear this song....for God!!!!
