Check your state laws or local ordinances and make sure it's not mandantory to have converters on your car. Messing with the emissions system on your car in some states is a GIANT NO-NO!
soo are saying that since you took off the muffler and tail pipe it blew out your cats? would you say this is a better idea then putting dual pipes on it?
@runnermatt123 , Taking the muffler and tailpipe off did not cause the cats.to blow out. The exact cause is actually from 2 different things. First, long ago I was having misfire issues and the coilpack was going bad. The plugs that would not fire caused all that unburnt gas to get dumped into the converters, making them get RED HOT. They got cooked. Backfiring caused some material to get blown out. As for dual pipes, that would sound much better..but its all personal preferences.
ok im still confused i know u removed the muffler and running just the y pipe. but my main confusion is.. are u running a stock y pipe and it sounds like this or are u using larger tubing like 2"5 or 3". im curious because i plan to remove my muffler but if adding a larger pipe makes my car louder then this then thats to loud i dont wanna get pulled over
@revelationns This is from the stock Y-pipe. It's not extremely loud, not unless your converters are knocked out or gutted. To be honest, it would sound better if it had a dump on the end of a Cherry bomb (red glasspack muffler). As long as you have that Y-pipe and converters, it won't be real loud and wont' sound all that good. Most mufflers just silence it, and the stock tailpipe makes it too quiet.
So my CATS are completely blown out now.. Actually, Me and a friend replaced my transmission a week or so ago and while we were at it, he knocked the rest of the crap out of the converters. I was surprised by what was still in there. Anyways, My exhaust sounds totally different now. I have a slight head leak, but Idk if that s playing a role in it or not. I will get another exhaust clip since I can finally shift gears again. My old trans had a busted out 2nd gear and it'd pop out of 1st.
@iLdroid It's not that loud. So unless you live in a state like California where they have very strict noise pollution laws , then you'll be fine. Do you still have functional cats? This is assuming you are talking about removing both the muffler AND the tailpipe section. However, I have tried this while leaving the tailpipe on. I just clamped in a piece of that flex pipe from the parts store to take the mufflers place. If you ask me, too quiet still.
Hard to tell if I lost gas mileage. Traffic had increased 3 fold in the following 4 years and I already LOST gas mileage from that mess. So what this did, I have no idea. lol Then again, we all don't buy Mustangs because of the gas mileage :p

I did the same, the only thing I noticed was gas mileage dropped

I took 2 cats off my mustang and was debating on taking the muffler off or puting a flowmaster 40. Checkout my video.
