If he built it using molds and spare parts that is ILLEGAL #1 because that would be property of the studio he would have had to return. That is the law when making vehicles such as this the company owns the TRADEMARK and copyright material to the film and only REPLICAS can be built using mock parts and molds.AND NO the ORIGINAL engine was NOT a 351 and was ILLEGAL it was a 502 and could clock OVER 300 miles an hour on the street. Secondly cars of the stars is NOT closed.
A GOOD REPLICA, the real ONE is in Wales in a car museum. They proudly display it as the LAST mad max car in existence. All the others were wrecked during filming. The engine in that thing is also very illegal in 48 states they also display that in the museum as well. It was pretty cool though. A good attempt at making a mad max car.
@durk20 - They built 2 for the films. Number 2 was blown up and is in a guy's backyard in Broken Hill, NWS. Number 1 was in the Cars of the Stars Museum. The museum has since closed, and their website redirects to a place in Florida. Mine was built by Scott Smith in Australia with the guys who built the first two, using original parts and molds. Then engine is legal in all 50 US states, a 351 Cleveland, same as the other two.
@PatrolmanDark wow 80 gallons thats a whole lot of petrol :O awesome job though id love to have my own or maybe build my own custom project >:D you know make a new breed of muscle car >:)
@ASRA177 - Thank you sir, thought the work is not mine. This car was built in Australia by Scott Smith with the help of the gentlemen who built the two movie cars. I say, go for it! Build the Next Cool Muscle Car. They are best from the minds of real enthusiasts!
@letkutin - Greetings to Finland, a country I greatly admire! Thank you for your kind words, indeed, it guzzles the flammable stuff. But that's a small price to pay for the fun of driving and talking with people everywhere I go.
@PatrolmanDark; Nice!! I got a cleveland in my 68 cougar and that thing has more power then most people can handle... So is that blower functional? cause if it is im definently puting one of thoughs on my car !!!!
@PatrolmanDark does that blower have a clutch on it were you can turn it off and on while driving down the street like he does in the movie? By the way that is one bad ass car you got there!!! How many cubes are you running?
@anthony1bad351 - Thank you, sir. Yep, that's how the blower starts and stops in this video. They built this car just like the first two, with a 351 Cleveland.
@PatrolmanDark I am guessing you're using bypass valves on the intake to let the engine breathe in once the supercharger is disengaged? If so, I'd love to see detailed pictures of the setup
Thats so sweet. I read where Ford and Weiand developed a supercharged that could be used for pursuit on the Ford Australian Super Stallion, but could also be shut down if high octane fuel were not available. It was just a prototype, but fits well in the movies. Really sweet!
Know what I'd suggest? I'd suggest to the owner of the car to buy himself a sawed-off double barreled shotty, a few extra gas tubes packed in that car and to store it somewhere safe untill, well we all know that "THAT" day is going to come, eventually! (Watched too much Mad Max and played too much Fallout)
@Kryndon64 - Thank you, sir, already well equipped. But I won't store this car, it must be driven to keep it road-worthy. Just did an hour in it today.
Hiyadoin', Dark old boy! Got me some lyme disease, put a stop to the '88-92 thunderbird homage interceptor. Still would love to do it! Now two kids later, I find karate lessons and gymnastics taking all my Mad Max money. HEAVEN! STILL, YOU GO ON WITHOUT ME! I tune in every now and then just to hear the sound of the interceptor. Keeps me goin'. BTW, I figured out how to run cars on mostly water. Instead of 14-1, I do 1-1, PLUS 13 water. Shazam! Holler if you do Chicago WOW show.
I don't guess I've ever heard of a blower you could turn off. And not sure why you would need to. Mine is 'adjustable', I suppose. It has this little pedal that you operate with your right foot. Works like a charm. Lol
before i swapped in a 302 4 barrel v8,my '80 mustang had a turbo 4 cyl,with a siezed turbo. granted it's not a rootes type blower,but it still ran like a naturally aspirated 4. i would think a roots that isn't spinning would be far to restrictive though. this interceptor must be the inspiration for most car guys worldwide.it changed my life,lol.
What? Is that a real blower clutch?? How does it work and how does the engine get fuel when its not on? Is there a bypass or does it suck right trough the housing with the still standing impellers?
@rilzey1 - I'm pretty certain the blower wasn't electrically driven, I believe they rigged it the same way they rigged mine. If you watch closely in the garage scene, the method can be seen. While it is true they weren't a limited edition, they only built 949 XB GTs, which is a pretty limited number.
@PatrolmanDark news to me but how would the car run if the blower wasnt puching air in. I know you could make it like a clutch type system like a ac compresser but how would air get past the impeller of the supercharger? If air could then it aint a very good supercharger, just a expensive fan. Could you enlighten me please cause i would really like to know. Any one welcome with comments
i'm pretty sure the one in the movie was faked for exactly that reason. But the newer caddilac ctsv has a set of flaps that switch over the intake from naturaly aspirated to the supercharger and engage the supercharger cluch depending on the throttle position and engine load. I dont see any evidence of that sort of dual intake tracts in the movie or still photos ive seen.
@mudbug6483 well thats neat, a type of dual aspiration, natural/supercharged. Seems like it would burn up the mechanism that runs the clutch for the supercharger. It must be an industrial strength clutch system.
it was a limited edition 1973 gt 351 xb ford falcon hardtop,sold in australia between 1973 and 1976,it now sits in the cars of the stars motor museum in england u.k.,,351 windsor block fitted with 6:71 weiand blower...
@WhiteDragon1021 - They used two others in the movies, this was built later for promotions, exhibitions, and the documentary "Back 2 The Max". I have no reason to believe they'd dub in a different engine sound over the originals, it sounds quite nice.
@WhiteDragon1021 - I have a book that states that the car in my garage is an AMC AMX. If the car has a perfectly good sound, I can't see a reason to dub a different engine sound. And nobody I know, or who my friends know, who worked on the film have ever mentioned that they dubbed in a Valiant engine over the existing 351C. There's also a fella who swears up and down that they replaced the engine with a Pontiac lump. Madmaxmovies has a ton of factual info.
@taipan185 - I have the book in front of me - "Hollywood TV and Movie Cars" by William Krause, published in 2001 by MBI Publishing Company, page 101. :)
@PatrolmanDark I am just trying to get something straight, are you saying the book claims the car used by Mad Max was an AMC AMX? Because if anyone ever said that Mad Maxes car was anything other than a 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe they are completely full of crap. Good luck even finding an AMC of any kind in Australia on top of that the AMC AMX doesn't even look like the car from Mad Max. I am just trying to work out if the book is making a bogus claim.
@MrCouchmen If the car is left ORINGINAL AUSTRLIAN,that steering wheel will be on the right,USA vehicles is all on the left-look more closly at the video,driver and the wheel is sitting on the right hand side of car if u was standing from BEHIND the car-the videos right is the audiences Left viewpoint
"I'll drive that tanka" Seriously amazing car! Does it have the self-destruct mechanism? Joking... One thing I always found odd about the Road Warrior was that in a future with limited gasoline everyone is driving large displacement supercharged hot rods.
@SourdoughMusk - I do have a duplicate of the mechanism, however I only mount it at shows, lest an uninformed person become alarmed. :)
And you are SO right. It really doesn't get the best gas mileage. At least they did *try* to address it by making the blower switchable. But then again, how thrilling would the opening chase have been if they used a Toyota Tercel and a Geo Metro? :D
Oh man, what can i say, people like you deserves and special place on heaven...what the hell, an entire special heaven called "The Wasteland" with endless roads and an eternal gas supply.
The Black on Black may just have become my new favourite muscle-car and yours is a fine example of the breed! I live in the land of really expensive fuel and insurance (England) so having a supercharged V8 is out of my reach - I tried the international court of human rights but they don't want to know!
This car beats anything. I was 10 when The Road Warrior came out so this car did something to my brain back then. I would give anything for just a short ride in it.
@PatrolmanDark You're too cool. I'm a bit busy with other meaningless things like wars right now. The next two years will be eventful. After things settle down I'll surely look you up and come drool at your piece of art that is known as the Last of the V8 Interceptors. I have lived in the wastelands of the middle east. In a hot tent,no food to eat, only a large armored machine and plenty of ammo to feed my hunger. I feel like Max sometimes.
@PatrolmanDark Similar to Stylensky, I was 10 when MM2 came out and I was hooked in terms of wanting a car with a blower (I currently own a 750 hp 2009 CTS-V), but this is the very car that got me hooked---I simply LOVE IT. Please tell me--have you ever had it on a dyno? I'd LOVE to see what it puts down!
@Lunaticfringe1000 - Nope, haven't put it on a dyno. For me, the look of it, the sound of it, the kick in the pants when you smash the throttle - that all does it for me. This thing is a totally visceral joyride.
@ps3freek1994 - I didn't figure it out. This car was build by Scott Smith in Australia with the fellas that built the first two. They built the the same as those. Magnetic clutch.
@murdamonte - The section between the scoop and the case is fuel injection unit. This setup was created for dragsters. There's a ton of great info on the web at scottinjection dot cbj dot net.
@Henzzman - Have a look at my video - Last V8 Ride-Along. It's there. That's how I turn the blower on and off. They built this car the same as the first two.
@Henzzman - You could do it with a custom intake manifold beneath that contains custom sidedraft electronic fuel injected carbs for air, a fully electronic ignition system, and a engine control computer to change the fuel delivery system and ignition mapping for each mode.
@Henzzman VERY true, it takes a LOT of HP to turn a Gilmer belt that wide. But - if I'm splashing out enough cash for all the other custom work, then I think I could have a custom electric clutch made up as well. I like your thoroughness, sir!
Are you seriously considering doing this? You could do it if you use a reed-type valve located upstream of the blower and ahead of the throttle body that admits air under manifold depression from an air cleaner, but closes when the blower is pumping air under positive pressure. It would require dual ECU mapping as you say. But it would require you to be very knowledgeable (and deep in the wallet) to make it work well even assuming you can get around the fixed valve timing.
@TheMrCJist - Nope, the car is too valuable for me to make major modifications to the engine, it must remain as it was used in Australia for promotions and exhibitions.
Damn! As far as I know, that would be the first time anyone tried building a Mad Max Interceptor replica with a real blower. Still, it sounds sick and goes like stink even without it. Are the add-on tanks real? At least you could brag about getting 1000 miles on one tank:D
@TheMrCJist - My friend, Mark in New York, he built a replica with a working blower. It doesn't use the Scott hat injector, but it's fully blown - not switchable. He has videos on YouTube. The tanks - nah - they didn't make them usable in the first two cars, nor in mine - storing 80 gallons of fuel (520 lbs) high and behind the rear axle is not the best idea.
I stand corrected (although I am not surprised its non-switchable).
Always thought the rear tanks were a bit unrealistic, performance wise. Its worse on the Lord Humungus' vehicle, thats got the same thing but they are higher and actual barrels! And no roll cage. I doubt that guy realistically expected to end up a grandad:D
I'd like to see a blower with a clutch then you can run the engine separate and turn on the blower like you would an A/C compressor. The car is badass!
How do you go for parts over in the US? XA/B/C NOS items are getting hard to come by here, especially bits unique to the coupe body. Have owned an XA hardtop with Oz 351C, and an XC with the local baby 302C.
@GunsOfThePhoenix - A huge amount of cash. You'd want to talk with the folks at Aussiecoupes. It's the usual dot com address. Tell them that Jake sent you. Then there's a matter of getting the custom fiberglass. Some folks are doing replicas.
@PatrolmanDark

@Typhlosion100 - All 4 on each side are connected to a common pipe. The ladies do seem to enjoy the rumbling.

"I'll drive that tanka" Seriously amazing car! Does it have the self-destruct mechanism? Joking... One thing I always found odd about the Road Warrior was that in a future with limited gasoline everyone is driving large displacement supercharged hot rods.
SourdoughMusk 9 months ago
@SourdoughMusk - I do have a duplicate of the mechanism, however I only mount it at shows, lest an uninformed person become alarmed. :)
And you are SO right. It really doesn't get the best gas mileage. At least they did *try* to address it by making the blower switchable. But then again, how thrilling would the opening chase have been if they used a Toyota Tercel and a Geo Metro? :D

Oh man, what can i say, people like you deserves and special place on heaven...what the hell, an entire special heaven called "The Wasteland" with endless roads and an eternal gas supply.

That is a bad ass car. Loved Mad Max 1 and 2....3 sucked...no S/C V8 in that one.
myg0tBUTTPLUG 11 months ago
The Black on Black may just have become my new favourite muscle-car and yours is a fine example of the breed! I live in the land of really expensive fuel and insurance (England) so having a supercharged V8 is out of my reach - I tried the international court of human rights but they don't want to know!

This car beats anything. I was 10 when The Road Warrior came out so this car did something to my brain back then. I would give anything for just a short ride in it.

@Stylensky - I believe you're in Georgia. Just give me a holler when you know you'll be in the Dallas, Texas area and we'll make that happen.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago 5
@PatrolmanDark You're too cool. I'm a bit busy with other meaningless things like wars right now. The next two years will be eventful. After things settle down I'll surely look you up and come drool at your piece of art that is known as the Last of the V8 Interceptors. I have lived in the wastelands of the middle east. In a hot tent,no food to eat, only a large armored machine and plenty of ammo to feed my hunger. I feel like Max sometimes.
Stylensky 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark Similar to Stylensky, I was 10 when MM2 came out and I was hooked in terms of wanting a car with a blower (I currently own a 750 hp 2009 CTS-V), but this is the very car that got me hooked---I simply LOVE IT. Please tell me--have you ever had it on a dyno? I'd LOVE to see what it puts down!
Lunaticfringe1000 11 months ago
@Lunaticfringe1000 - Nope, haven't put it on a dyno. For me, the look of it, the sound of it, the kick in the pants when you smash the throttle - that all does it for me. This thing is a totally visceral joyride.
PatrolmanDark 10 months ago
@PatrolmanDark I'll pay 1/2 of a dyno run! /smile As stated above, this car is what it was all about for me when I was younger
Lunaticfringe1000 10 months ago
@Stylensky I think I was about the same age. I didnt quite understand the trailer when i saw it on tv? Long time fan.

how do you turn off the supercharger? ive allways wondered how they got that to work and obviously you did.
ps3freek1994 1 year ago
@ps3freek1994 - I didn't figure it out. This car was build by Scott Smith in Australia with the fellas that built the first two. They built the the same as those. Magnetic clutch.

@ps3freek1994
im guessing the same idea as A/C with having the compressor magnets kick on and off the drive belt
just a thought

@murdamonte - The section between the scoop and the case is fuel injection unit. This setup was created for dragsters. There's a ton of great info on the web at scottinjection dot cbj dot net.

All you need now is a little red switch attached to the gear lever.
Henzzman 1 year ago
@Henzzman - Have a look at my video - Last V8 Ride-Along. It's there. That's how I turn the blower on and off. They built this car the same as the first two.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark So your blower is fake?
Henzzman 1 year ago
@Henzzman - It's chock full of movie-magic.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark Thought so,because you cant turn off a weiand twin screw blower,because it cuts off the air to the engine.
Henzzman 1 year ago
@Henzzman - You could do it with a custom intake manifold beneath that contains custom sidedraft electronic fuel injected carbs for air, a fully electronic ignition system, and a engine control computer to change the fuel delivery system and ignition mapping for each mode.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark Well yeah,but youd have to find an electric clutch powerful enough to engage and disengage the blower.
Henzzman 1 year ago
@Henzzman VERY true, it takes a LOT of HP to turn a Gilmer belt that wide. But - if I'm splashing out enough cash for all the other custom work, then I think I could have a custom electric clutch made up as well. I like your thoroughness, sir!
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark
TheMrCJist 1 year ago
@TheMrCJist - Nope, the car is too valuable for me to make major modifications to the engine, it must remain as it was used in Australia for promotions and exhibitions.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark
Damn! As far as I know, that would be the first time anyone tried building a Mad Max Interceptor replica with a real blower. Still, it sounds sick and goes like stink even without it. Are the add-on tanks real? At least you could brag about getting 1000 miles on one tank:D
TheMrCJist 1 year ago
@TheMrCJist - My friend, Mark in New York, he built a replica with a working blower. It doesn't use the Scott hat injector, but it's fully blown - not switchable. He has videos on YouTube. The tanks - nah - they didn't make them usable in the first two cars, nor in mine - storing 80 gallons of fuel (520 lbs) high and behind the rear axle is not the best idea.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@PatrolmanDark

I wonder if you could make the blower functional with something similar to an AC compressor's electronically operated clutch...

It's the duck's guts!
wmichswingers 1 year ago
I'd like to see a blower with a clutch then you can run the engine separate and turn on the blower like you would an A/C compressor. The car is badass!

How do you go for parts over in the US? XA/B/C NOS items are getting hard to come by here, especially bits unique to the coupe body. Have owned an XA hardtop with Oz 351C, and an XC with the local baby 302C.
KG84C 1 year ago
@KG84C - I do alright. I haven't really needed any coupe-specific parts, just engine and transmission stuff, and that's plentiful here in the states.

What's up with the blower, fake? How is the car running without it spinning?
Oldsmob455 1 year ago
@Oldsmob455 - It's movie-magic, sir.

@Oldsmob455 The movie car had a gutted blower with a carb inside. It was just visual.

Does anyone know how much it is to import a Falcon into the US to modify into this?
GunsOfThePhoenix 1 year ago
@GunsOfThePhoenix - A huge amount of cash. You'd want to talk with the folks at Aussiecoupes. It's the usual dot com address. Tell them that Jake sent you. Then there's a matter of getting the custom fiberglass. Some folks are doing replicas.
PatrolmanDark 1 year ago
@GunsOfThePhoenix no i heard that importing costs up to 2-3k`s of cash.
