  • IM QUITE CURE THAT THE SHIP WILL ROTATE TO GET AN ARTIFICIAL GRAVITY AS WELL

  • u good film makers get too clever thinking u have to format the movies' aspect ratio too when youtube clearly states not to, and that they'll do it otherwise uploads end up in a black box.,just like this one, completely hampering the enjoyment of the intended-us-u're viewers....plantpot!

  • This was so well done, I was waiting for the "ITC Entertainment" end cap!

  • This is like an old sci-fi show. No cgi, just models.

  • I want bob marley

  • Epic sounds!

  • This was a neat video! I also enjoy "Blue Danube Waltz" in the soundtrack. I sometimes have a fascination with space travel, especially with the idea of going to Mars. This video is certainly much more exciting than watching Jeopardy, or your "money" back!

  • Oh gosh I've just discovered a genius!

  • damn just damn

  • This is great!

  • It's pretty amazing, NASA has a technology using anti-matter for energy and it's light weight about the size of 1/10 an M&M that will have enough energy to go from Earth to Mars. The engine design was on NASA.com about a month before the shuttle program ended. Space is more than political, we're all retarded to our homes, so are they.

  • copy cat....Kubrick thought of this music and space in the movie "2001" God, the maker of this video is so boring ...!

  • @TheClassicalSymphony

    Bit like yourself then?

  • @SB111058 what? stop asking stupid questions., dickhead....or is it a fight you're lookin for, u twat.

  • @TheClassicalSymphony

Nope, I just wanted to see whats holding your ears apart, which obviously ain't much..

Yep , If you want a physical fight i'm really up for it.... And I'll give you my address or a location in The UK i Guess?. Or you tell me.. Love to meet you face to face...

  • @TheClassicalSymphony Dont know if you got my original reply but its basically, I'd love to know what keeps your ears apart and I would be great to meet you, Literally,...

I live near London and it would be super to see you......

  • @SB111058 You live near London, well, well, so do I , Tonbridge in fact....I often drive up to London, takes 45 mins....so u wanna punch my head in eh? Haahahaha...you fuckin idiot.

  • @TheClassicalSymphony

    I like that idea...

  • @SB111058 No u don't like the idea, u stupid cunt, yer all fuckin bravado....little shit...don't fuckin reply, yer not worth corresponding with, u geeky Gerry Anderson ,Terrahawks etc etc...yer a wanker....

  • @TheClassicalSymphony

No, I really like the idea of meeting you, in person...

  • @SB111058 I told u to fuck off, you fuckin idiot.....u wouldn't dare meet me... u little squirt! U scarey excuse for a Terrahawk ..! hahaahaha!!! You stupid wanker.

  • @TheClassicalSymphony

Ever heard the word 'homage'? Though if you have you probably think it's French for cheese. It would be nice to see you get off your arse and actually create something instead of knocking those who do.

  • @McToddRidesAgain Shut it, u wanker,I fuckin hate froggy cheese anyway. Checkout my Electronica channel (go to my channel) ..all the uploads are remixes by me...plus I'm a well known Trance music producer......just don't get arsey with me in future.

  • @TheClassicalSymphony - "I'm a well known Trance music producer" - yeah right, and I'm really Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. You are such a deeply sad little prick. Oh, and I'll get as arsey as I like with you, smegwipe.

  • @McToddRidesAgain u come across as a little shit, mate....fuck off trying to take me on , u very small, tiny little poo. Stop sending me puny quasi-tough messages...yer just a big girl's blouse.....go on, shove off, stop wasting my time.

  • @TheClassicalSymphony I wouldn't dream of 'taking you on' as you so quaintly put it as I have far more important things to do with my time - there's a patch of damp paint the drying of which is utterly fascinating, I must rush. Don't bother replying as I shan't be posting about you again given my urgent paint-watching schedule.

  • Can't say enough good things about this movie. Truly brilliant. Inspired. Retro.

Possibly the best video I have seen on Youtube in 2011. Unreal!

  • tu es en retard.il y a déjà de la vie la haut plus de place pour nous.

  • tu es en retard.

  • Are those VASIMR engines?

  • Oh, c'mon, in 2055 ?! I don't want to watch the Mars landing like a fucking adult...

  • Why can't NASA be part of a UN Funded organisation, surely opening it up to more funding?

  • @kazooie123456 Because we know how efficiently the UN wastes money, and every third world crack pot would then have access to ballistic missle technology. If you want something done right, do it yourself. The UN is a useless waste of time and money.

  • I love the serenity just like 2001 a Space odyssey. May these great internet initiatives lead to the greatest odyssey of all time, the manned mission to Mars. We need to UNITE as world-community of internet users to push our governments to make the Mars Mission a reality well before the fifties arrive... Worldwide we MUST launch a mobilisation, and we must start TODAY. My warmest thanks to David making this creative inspiring Mars artwork. The dream is alive, MARS!

  • I like the take off, and all the space stuff. The martian surface shots are a bit fast, but that's okay. I love the super simple, cheap, effective (Virtually my motto) effects. The bit with the ship leaving Earth Space was great (and super simple).

By the way, what materiel did you use for your martian soil? I've used ashes for lunar stuff before, but I'm still working on a mars miniature landscape.

  • dude, noticed you liked visual effects videos and i thought you would also like mine.

    zach

  • 2055 is un unrealistic date, more likely it will happen somewhre during the 22'st century:2100~2120,we won't be able to return to the Moon by 2055,Obama has destroyed NASA and the American space program.

You will see,the private companies won't be able to come up with better and cheaper lifters and heavy lifters are out of the question,so Eugene Cernan will sadly remain the last earthling who walked on another world for some time.

Shame on Obama for canceling Constellation!

  • @TheHotelMoxa I don't think it will take near that long to go to Mars. But another question is what is there to find on Mars? Perhaps people will land there and say "yep this is a red ball of rock".

  • Face it, a manned mission to Mars may never happen.. ... ever

  • @TheSpiritof1969

well if you dont know go to nasas page we probably will go to mars

    2017. so dont talk shit

  • @AlphaMaIe

That is quite interesting considering the first manned flight of Aries is not scheduled to happen until 2022. They predict a Mars mission for 2030 if they get future funding for it, which is not very hopeful.

  • @TheSpiritof1969

why wouldnt they get money till 2030. its not that is that much money

    if some billioners will donate

  • @AlphaMaIe

From memory, without looking it up, the guaranteed funding for Aries/Orion up to 2022 when they expect the first manned launch is $70 billion. (Peanuts by Apollo standards) If they go for a Mars mission the requirement will dwarf this and the worlds economy is past its best. As it is the Aries system is a mish mash of Saturn design and components built for the shuttle.

  • Nice work, David!

  • no computers its cool but is not made by computers

  • Where have I heard that song before ??? lol

  • JOURNEY TO THE PERSON WITHOUT LOGIC WILL DIE OF ANTE CHECK ON EARTH I WANT TO SAY AT SEA hehehehehe

  • 2012 end the world ..kkkk nasa fail

  • É tudo falso porque como que eles iam filma

  • Должен играть гимн КНР

  • I thought that it was well done, and also enjoyed hearing Strauss. If we're going to venture to that ugly and desolate orb, then playing some beautifying music sure wouldn't hurt.

  • I think this video would be much better if you didn't actually use the same soundtrack that was in 2001.

  • I wonder who created, directed, and edited this movie and all the rest of the credits? lol

  • What cammera uses for the takes?

  • Do you have a higher resolution version?

  • The sad fact is that space exploration is simply not a priority for the government, the private sector, or the general public. Government is too concerned with delivering short-trem benefits to the electorate to win the next election; the private sector is too fixated on the "bottom line" over the short term; and the public is too concerned with matters that affect them personally and immediately.

These cultural obstacles are the real ones, and the hardest to overcome.

  • Excellent lighting and motion on the miniatures. Some of these shots are of Medding's quality. (Specifically, They are right up there with some of the stuff he did for "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun")

  • Reminds me of the effects from James Bonds, You Only Live Twice.

  • fucking annoying music does not match this.

  • My goodness, it's hard to believe this was done in a garage as a college project. It is so polished and well paced. Looks like you will have a future in Hollywood.

  • congratulations!

  • I just love this kind of stuff! How did this go over in class?

  • screw kubrick .. Did he have to associate space exploration with this lame ass music?? ^^

  • You said the first Manned flight to Mars didn't you? So, the film was good but... WHERE ARE THE ASTRONAUTS!?!?!?!?¬!?!!?!?!?

  • Good job old bean

  • not bad i like it thanks

  • this will look so vintage after 50 years !!!

  • youvebeenthunderstruck nonsense NASA gets almost one quarter as much funding as the Marlboro cigarette company!

  • 2020-2055 "Voyages To Mars"

  • Very nicely done! I especially liked the stage separation, thruster, and re-entry effects as well as your Mars surface and the medium-distance shots of the landing; most folks would've chosen something closer but yours gave a feeling of the space and expanse of the martian surface. The only change I would've made was a "wider track" landing gear on the landing module, say hinged legs folded against the lander and extended by hydraulic rams as those vertical units looked too spindly.

  • I like it very much..!! do you use blue screen ? or other techniques..!

    Congratulations...!!!!

  • @matteline1 I'd rather think we'd develop a network of space stations and have reusable ascent/descent craft.... maybe even orbital towers and mega-platforms to catapult and capture crafts and payloads between stations? Rocket sled rails that run 10,000 kilometers putting vehicles at 1 G? It supposed to be the middle of the 21st Century?

  • yeah that is a problem not being able to control fps, I remember we used an Image 300 35mm cam to shoot a heli explosion at 240fps on film of course.

some of the new cams can shoot at higher rates check them out and make the switch! Also something I learned from the Skotak bros. dirt in the foreground should be compressed or a smooth surface for correct scale effect.

-Again this is beautiful work rivaling anything Brian Johnson did .

  • @TheScorpionSquad

Will be uploaded soon. Got a miniature of a lighthouse to build which - hopefully - will be used in an in-camera effect using some old film techniques such as the Shufftan process.

  • contrast is off in a lot of places.. just like in the old days

  • As a miniature effects vet -im impressed!. -just some tips: remember the mass of the objects -shoot them fast and slow them down.

docking you can shoot backwards and reverse the clip! The orion project looked so much like Apollo we can let you off the hook about the the stock models.

    Congrats.

  • @will4ward

Mass, water and fire. Hardest things to scale down.

I wish my camcorder could shoot at a higher FPS. Nearest thing I can do is shoot in 'sports mode' at 1/2000 shutter speed but still not the same as FPS increase.

  • Two years after the release, and I'm still blown away!!! Hope to see more from you in the future!!

  • makes you think where will the human race be in the next 100 years.WOW!!!! SO EXCITED.

  • 6 months of mozzart I would probably kill myself on the 2nd week.....

  • That was awesome!! Loved it. Good work!

  • Click on my name to find my Project Constellation Remix Requiem videos:

The again, maybe they're too depressing... :(

  • Very, very good David. I wish it was 2020-2025 we were going to Mars. Now I know I wont see it in my lifetime.

  • I'm waiting for the sequel, when possible bacteria from Mars go crazy in the ocean and create a plague that wipes out or mutates humans Resident Evil style. Any astronauts coming from Mars or any other planet in the solar system or beyond need to be isolated like the Apollo astronauts either on a space station or a Moon base to make 100% sure they are not bringing anything back. 4 stars.

  • That was superb David. You'd done your homework for a tone of that film. The part that looked extra great was the section of the rocket that fell back to Earth and the re-entry also. Well done dude keep it up man.

  • niiiice!! still using rockets...

  • Very good work!!!!! Especially the last part when the ship comes apart before re-entering Earth's atmosphere. That's done better than some modern films, certainly looks better than the videogame inspired CGI crap they do today!

Well done! Congratulations! Really nice work!!!!!

  • this sum krazy ass shit. im stoned as fuk lol

  • Absolutely awesome. We need to see more of these effects, including stop motion (with a little motion blur, to be sure, but still).

  • Bravo Sir!

    Really well done!

    Especially the ship seperation!

  • wow that was better veiwing than that bloody 2012 crap , well done :D 5 stars

  • Dude who cares the point of the video is to show what could be done with models. That we don't need over use of cgi.

  • The only reason we can't get there sooner is because fucking government doesn't fund NASA.

  • And we can now thank Obama for killing the dream. America can just send up more boring climate research satelites :(

  • Well, to be fair, earth studies are highly important as well...

  • @youvebeenthunderstru and for good reason, but I agree that it is total BS.

  • @youvebeenthunderstru A FUKING MEN I AGREE

  • hate music :S

  • PLease may it not take that long......but I fear it will. Soon as American schools ditch this creationism shit and get back to REAL science education.

  • But when is Al Gore going to admit that he doesn't know beans about climate science???

  • Only when Deniers stop assuming they know more than him

  • @TheFluffyDuck

Americans schools have zero creationism in them... nothing to ditch (except for some private schools).

Science has been co-opted by environmentalists. High schools focus almost entirely on ecology and environmental studies these days. That reason, more than any thing else, is responsible for our decline in the necessary scientific fields of physics, astronomy, chemistry...

It's a shame more people don't know this.

  • @TheFluffyDuck

I don't know when you went to school but schools stopped teaching creationism a loooooooooong time ago. It's all evolution now.

  • @TheFluffyDuck Not to step to either side of the debate you bring up, but I don't think your argument is relative. In fact, I know of no public school that teaches creationism. And even schools/teachers that do still teach the same physics and same basic science as any other well grounded school/teacher. Weather you believe the earth is an accident or created has little baring on your knowledge of physical sciences, and ability to work in or with programs pertaining to space travel.

  • @PowerOfMontage Religion was the last science available called living word. It was a way that people used to speak to lost relatives in space. Like the force in Star Wars but much more powerful. And it's still in our blood. The whole communion at church thing is about the fact that the living word is in our blood. The will to talk to a passed on relative or even through TV and pictures. The Holy Spirit is a vale on our eyes that protects us from God I believe God is protecting a lot of us!!!

  • i only have one thing to say..... DOOM 3.

  • Uuhhh... I understood ;-)

  • wrong

  • 2055? Not 2020 or 2030?

  • 2020 is most likely, and im being pessimistic

  • Uh... no... sorry to burst your happy bubble..... but we aren't getting to mars by 2020. Believe me.. I wish this was so.

Current NASA estimates and the recent Augustine commission said early 2030's.

NASA plans to go back to the moon by 2020 though.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice video. But classical music? Kinda annoying and doesn't go well with this.

  • The classical selections were right on target

  • Comment removed

  • NASA actually planing on going to Mars as LATE as 2037. They're working on replacing the moon colonization mission in 2020 with a Mars mission

  • looks great! Made me think of the Thunderbirds series sometimes.

  • Very beautiful

  • Beautiful work. What was the size of your miniatures?

  • Amazing! I loved it, nice one! This is exactly what I want to be doing as a career. I'm just about to start work on miniature effects sequences of a landing on the moon, but have nothing to edit it with which is a slight drawback. Derek Meddings is one of my heroes, I'm sure he would be proud of this! Well done.

  • derek meddings surely would've loved this. your video inspired me and took me back to my childhood and to the reasons i loved filmmaking in the first place. GREAT WORK.

  • our 1st mission to mars isnt going to be anything like that!

    kool vid btw!

  • Awesome! I'd love to see some stills of your setups and behind the scene stuff.

  • Cute but unrealistic. First of all landing the earth capsule on Mars is extremely wasteful in fuel. The heatshield adds a lot of weight. You'd have to use the same approach as Apollo to make your landing craft as light as possible.

  • hmm 2055, no probaly 2035 and teraforming by atleast 2135 we have to make shure theres no life there before we teraform

  • Nice film but why ruin it with Blue Danube which was used in 2001 A Space Oddessy.

  • Excellent. Brilliantly done. 1st class.

  • Yes a manned mission to mars is supposed to take place in the 2030s but terraforming in 2055?!?! Im not sure .

  • IMO they just should put XXXXL greenhouses on mars, and use them to transform all the CO2 there into oxygen....

  • i agree

  • Mr Ross I am pretty sure Derek Meddings would be proud he is remembered in this work, I have to admit I was heavily influenced by Derek Meddings, not only in life but also my youtube channel.

  • how did you make this!? Its really great

  • B.C. 2055?

  • Freaking Amazing. Might I ask what grade did you get?

Definitely beyond my ability and even more so my patience. It's very very well done, particularly the take of and reentry of Earth, though really every part was very impressive.

  • Again, what a work of art!

  • That is absolutely fantastic! Derek Meddings would be proud, I'm sure of it. Reminded me of the rocket launches in 'UFO', with the camera pan on Mars reminding me of 'Thunderbirds Are Go'!

    Well done!

  • Outstanding work David! And so inspiring! Congratulations.

  • My God, what an awesome film! As another fan of the late great Derek Meddings (and everyone else you list in your profile), it's wonderful to see someone in this CGI age embrace the Old School, and to do so with such consummate ability! And at the age of 19! I wish you the best of luck in your studies and future career, I have no doubt you have the talent to make it!

  • Nice video it looks pretty realistic.

  • Thanks matteline1!

  • "Thunk"

That's my jaw hittin the floor. How long have you been doing minature work? How much did this cost to do? I'm a film student trying to get special effects created as a major study at the film school department of my college.

  • Totally and utterly fantastic. It's good to see real models being used - proper 'Old Skool' methods. Great choice of music too.

Have you made any more films?

  • Thanks TK42138, The only other proper "film" i've made is my very very short first animation "The Story of the Scribble Man" which is on my youtube page. Cheers!

  • Thanx for this one! I wish Derek Meddings could have directed a Bond-picture in the eighties or so. He wanted to direct "For your eyes only", but that was handed ofcourse to John Glen, another ace director, that did great work. But of Dereks best work, I personally think that must be on the film "The Spy Who Loved me". The "Liparus", the "Atlantis", Lotus.. Amazing!

But it was interesting to se this. Do you know when it was made? Have a nice day :)

  • Ohh, sorry, my question should rather be: May I ask `when this was made? Cool stuff, really!

  • @TK42138 not entirely old school... there's computer editing and computer effects in there. not the ship or the surfaces, but it's there. and it's obvious.

  • @hcvang

Yes, agreed. I watched it again (one of my all time fave YT films) and what I meant to say re: old school effects was the miniatures were 'real' constructs and not wireframe CGi modelling. Computer editing and grading and comp will always be useful though to avoid the slight mis-match travelling matte work as seen in original Star Wars etc. However there is still no substitute for miniature use as opposed to CGI space craft. Human brain is hard-wired to spot visual clues.

  • Thanks for the compliments and criticism, FlyingFoxOz. The shot that you mention with the clouds isn't my favorite either and I'm always glad when its over with! - it was pretty much thrown together as the deadline loomed. Still, it was fun to use cotton wool and it kept to the old-school in-camera theme.

  • I might do some kind of "making of" thing eventually. Thanks for your interest!

  • I'm a student filmmaker planning to do a short sci-fi film later next month and I was browsing around youtube to check out how people had made use of small scale miniatures. I wacthed your vid. and thought you did an excelent job! I'm scared to death I don't want to make anything that looks to incredibily fake...do you have any tips, suggestions in using minis? Would getting a mini as large as possible be the best bet?

  • Hi, Thanks! I'm glad you were able to find my film when searching for miniature work.

"Would getting a mini as large as possible be the best bet?"

Most of the time, I reckon you should build the largest miniature your budget and other restrictions can allow. There are exceptions to that though. Could you maybe describe what sort of miniature shots you are after? I thenmight be able to help you a bit better.

    Cheers

  • This is brilliant, well done. Incredible work. Thanks for sharing. You should get a job in the industry.

  • Thanks!

  • Excellent work. The shot from inside showing the vehicle exiting was great. The dirt splatter was a nice touch as well.

  • Cheers! I'm quite pleased with the dirt splatter too

  • Absolutely fantastic. Reminded me of the things I used to watch when I was a kid and also reminded me that CGI gets used far too much when it doesn't need to be.

A great piece of work, you should be very proud.

  • Cheers Brett!

"reminded me that CGI gets used far too much when it doesn't need to be."

Yeah, thats what I think too. If you ask me, when directors do a scene ENTIRELY in CGI, most of the time its down to either laziness, lack of vision, or to be fair, lack of budget and time can play a big part too.

The best special effects shots are a combination of practical model effects, CG elements, full scale practical effects, real stuntmen, CG "stuntmen" and every FX trick in the book.

  • That is superb, fantastic work.

  • A true work of art!!!

  • Thanks very much!

  • I am speechless!! Fantastic!! The kind of space film I long to see!!! Keep us the fantastic work; you have a lot to be proud of!!!

  • Thanks! Im glad you enjoyed it.
