@RichardElden OMG, no! Harris (not a very nice man, apparently) never directed anything, nor he wrote any show or screenplay (as Newley did). As far as I know he was never an entity on tv (Newley was a tv star since early on). The few songs that Harris actually wrote are virtually unknown. But Newley's Goldfinger, Feeling Good and What Kind of Fool Am I (to name only 3) are timeless classics! The same can be said about the shows that he wrote and directed. Harris was a good actor no allrounder
Anthony Newley is a legend of a magnitude that the world has NEVER seen! Who else (in any era) could sing, act, mime, dance, write music, write lyrics and just plainly charm the way he could? Name one!
Newley was totally committed to his performance in this movie. I love the piece, and Bricusse's songs are memorable and timeless. The critics be damned--it's a classic and still fun to watch all these years later. Everyone should spend a rainy afternoon with this film--they don't make 'em like this any more. "It's altogether Marvelous!"
That, I think, is the single most annoying differece between the book and other movie adaotations: in the book and this movie, Dolittle learns it like any other language. But everywhere else, it has to be a special power. It just makes so much more sense the original way.
@megadork456 I completely agree! I hated the Eddie Murphy version. The makers of that film clearly did not understand the book (if they even read it, which is doubtful since that film encompassed approximately .02% of the story). It might as well have been a completely different story, which of course it was, except for the doctor's name.
My mother read me the books when I was about six, and I was enchanted. Still am.
@megadork456 I grew up with this film and nothing can come close to being as magical, beautiful or meaningful, with the songs, the sceneries, the story etc. I do appreciate the remakes as very well done films, but I have to dismiss them as anything to do with the original, apart from them having the same name, as they are of completely different quality... this version being pure quality!
good quali:D

@EnniTom I agree. Anthony Newley was unforgettable - and sadly under-rated. Such is 'power' in the entertainment business.
