I watched this as it happened. It was terrific to see Trent's sheer joy at his performance. A short time later, the joy turned to ecstasy when the final competitor overstepped his landing, ensuring that Trent won the gold.
I care so little about gymnastics but I remember watching this and holding my breath at the end hoping that he was nail his landing. Obviously, he did. I love it still, so many years later, definitely my favorite olympic moment. Congrats Trent.
Triple cast permitted us to see Trent win the Gold LIVE. What a great moment in USA Gymnastics history. It's a shame mens gymnastics didn't make a bigger deal out of Trent's accomplishment to promote the sport. He overcame great adversity to achieve the ultimate success. He was just outstanding.
Not to mention he came so close to having a major injury, or worse paralyzing himself, on his vault at the 1991 Nationals. And he did the same vault again just seconds later! Definitely an outstanding gymnast.. and overcame huge adversity, indeed! @6966NA
Yes he won gold. What a fantastic routine! I was only 6 years old when the 92 games aired and I watched but I only remember the womens gymnastics and poor Kim Zmeskal but I sure wish I would have seen this! I'm so glad to see it now!
Yea, for some reason I didn't watch the guys but I remember T Dimas. I also remember how horrible it was for Kim especially since 4 years before Mary Lou was such a huge hit. It was hard to watch. I was 21 during these olympics.
Trent was just mentioned in ODE Magazine's sp. edition called "The Path of Endless Creation: How to Make Your Dreams Come True". To quote "In the period before D's performance you saw him mentally preparing. He closed his eyes and concentrated patiently until the entire routine had been performed in his mind's eye...He viewed each movement so that...body and mind would be perfectly in tune with each other. During the dismount, just before his perfect landing, a smile appeared on his face."
Thanks for posting this! I've been trying to find this. This routine and moment has always stuck in my memory even though I was a kid when this aired. It was so exciting to watch and it always puzzled me why this moment didn't get more media attention. Really thrilling!!
What a great moment for US gymnastics, i cant believe he didnt get more media attn or endorsements with his personality and looks. A really humble champion who deserved way more recongniton
My favorite mens' routine. Is Trent native american at all? Seems like I've seen the name Dimas among the Navajo. Anyway, this is wonderful and perfection!!!!!!
I trained at the same Gym as he did too. He was always so cool with us we were good buds. I once pulled down his shorts and he chased me down and gave me a swirly! Way fun to train with.
Where was his Wheaties box and endorsements for getting a gold medal? I always thought it was an injustice that he didn't get the perks some of the other gold medal American gymnasts got for their accomplishments.
I remember this moment perfectly. I loved it. He stuck that. Way to go Trent.
