A number like 2.5 million is far too large to exhaustively study so to simply compile data is not indicative of the true nature of firearms as a self-defense weapon.

@pesticidal If you feel that you need a gun to defend yourself, then that is your prerogative, but the numbers are out there and more often and not, the firearms are more of a liability than they are a benefit. A responsible gun owner would keep a weapon locked up with ammo in a different location, but someone using it for home defense obviously wouldn't. Now factor children into the situation and you realize that perhaps a home burglary alarm would be much more effective at deterring crime.

The only stat that really matters is the accidental shootings. The rest would have found other weapons or methods to use. As far as the accidental deaths go, you can't fix stupid. Anyone who has firearms in the same house as children should TRAIN their children in the safe use and handling of them. Of course they want to play with them, guns are cool. If you want to put the statistics in to perspective: 29,569 people killed (using your numbers) minus 16,750 (which were suicides = 12,819. Out of 192,000,000 guns equals 0.0067% of people killed by firearms. Or rather, 191,987,181 guns which weren't part of a murder. Seems like a lot of propoganda to me.

The vast majority of murders are committed with illegal firearms, so a ban wouldn't stop those. Suicides will not be prevented by a gun ban, because if you want to kill yourself you will do it with something else. Accidents are just that, accidents, it happens. In the words of Penn Jillette "You can't stop insane people from doing insane things by passing insane laws, that's insane."

I'm sorry but this video hasn't proven anything. All it's shown is you can make a video with facts you probably got off of some Anti gun website.
Gun related crimes are committed by those who illegally acquired the firearm.
A normal person who goes into a Cabellas or local gun store to purchase a firearm is not going to go and rob a liquor store the moment they have it or at all really.

FUCK YOU ! Armed Governments over the years have Killed 100s of millions of their own people. An Armed public is a Free public. how many life's were safe'd by law-abiding citizens that made use of their gun. I'm sure you would hate to see how high that number is. @Hoschi0913 Not too good actually, a comon hand gun is 22 times more likely to be used in a crime than in self defence. Nearly 74% of all law enforcment officers who are killed by small arms fire are killed by thier own guns, either when it is wrestled away by an assailant, or when they commit suicide. 55% of all suicides are done with a gun. We even had one cop who was killed with his own gun by a naked guy who got it away from him. Kinda sad, Huh?

if there would be an "easier" for suicidle persons to kill themself they would use it ,since a gun is as of now the easiest way for them,they gonna use it,aside of that ,how many people get killed each year by car's ? yet nobody wants to bann cars or trucks ,all of those things could be used to kill someone,the only difference between a gun and those other things is ........a possibility of selfdefence....even Nobel didnt invent Dynamite to make bombs out of it in the first place

thats true,but the intent of an axe is to split something,not neccessary wood for that matter,in the end it all comes down to the person using such instrument and the way they are using it or for which purpose,would i shoot somebody breaking into my place,you can bet ur ass on it,would it kill him,most likely,but thats not my concern at all,the person breakin in should had thought of the conseuqences to his action first

@Hoschi0913 Yeah, but you also realize that you are 4 times more likely to be shot by also having a gun? Why can't you just call the police? By having a gun you are presenting a threat to them and they will respond in such a fashion as they seem fit to neutralize the threat.
It isn't ethical to kill someone for simply breaking into your house. . No property is more valuable than life, even the life of a criminal. That is why it is "Life, liberty, property" and not "property, life, liberty".

16,750 suicides (56% of all U.S gun deaths),
11,624 homicides (40% of all U.S gun deaths),
649 unintentional shootings, 311 from legal intervention and 235 from undetermined intent (4% of all U.S gun deaths combined).

If you want to have an actual debate I would respect that you scale back your assault. I mean, what do you think is a more biased source, a study from the University of Pennsylvania, or an editorial from the Executive Director of NRA Republicans. I think it is pretty clear. That is unless you find academia elitist.

@maxnav12 I have to assume you simply read the URL of my link and didn't bother to read it. If you had, you'd have seen that my side also has a study, cited in the article. "professor Gary Kleck of Florida State University—Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America.
Kleck's exhaustive study demonstrated defensive uses of firearms by citizens occurred 2.5 million times per year, a figure far overshadowing criminal uses of guns."
That is unless you find Florida State not "academia"

@pesticidal That is a good point, but it is hard to believe that all those encounters could not have been just as effective without a firearm. A number like 2.5 million is far too large to exhaustively study so to simply compile data is not indicative of the true nature of firearms as a self-defense weapon.
Also, I did read it as indicated in the references I made in my post. (i.e. the author, the reference to George Soros, etc.)

@pesticidal If you feel that you need a gun to defend yourself, then that is your prerogative, but the numbers are out there and more often and not, the firearms are more of a liability than they are a benefit. A responsible gun owner would keep a weapon locked up with ammo in a different location, but someone using it for home defense obviously wouldn't. Now factor children into the situation and you realize that perhaps a home burglary alarm would be much more effective at deterring crime.

@maxnav12 No, you keep the gun with you around the house so that the child doesn't have access to it, or lock it up when you don't need it. And lets not forget that your child is more likely to die in a car accident or in a swimming pool than by a gun.
