  • The poppies are like the Sirens in the Odyessy, same symbolism.

  • amazing to see how much overdubbing(looping.ADR) was done in this film, most of it extremely well, considering that talking movies were only about 12 years old at this point.

  • In the book, the poppies were already there. They got help from mice. However, the movie had to cut out a lot of material and change it to make it more cost effective. POPPIES, Wahahahahahaha! Long before illegal drugs became illegal.

  • ROLE MODEL <3

  • @pdorn777 Your welcome. And totally, she was one of my favorite actresses of all time :) I've got a list of the movies she on so if i want i can go on youtube type the movie she's in and watch her do her marvelous acting!

  • I kinda find her pretty in this film even with the witchy makeup. But if u check out the other films she's been on she's really pretty in my opinion. :)

  • @pdorn777 Her son Hamilton Wadsworth Meserve was born in 1936 and was only 3 years old by the time his mother did this film. Yeah, she divorced in 1938. I'm not sure if her son was scared of her, but i do remember reading on this blog about her that she used to make sure all the makeup was gone so she wouldn't frighten her son...?

  • And the reason why she didn´t got an "Oscar for Best Supporting Actress" was?!

  • I wonder if they saw Kurt cobain in the distance playing heart shaped box?

  • Can the witch spread the poison over the White House?

  • Poppies work for me!

  • i am 22 and still scared of the wicked witch hahaha! lol :)

  • @pdorn777: Agreed on all counts.

  • "Wicked is based soley on the Wicked Witch of the West and her life and times. The Wizard of Oz came before Wicked."

Yes, however, part of that life you speak of would INCLUDE the events IN the film, since Elphaba (named AFTER Oz author, L. Frank Baum, whose sufferagist mother-in-law, Matilda, was the inspiration for BOTH witches) was BASED ON the Margaret Hamilton portrayal, hence the green skin and black gown, in comparison to the one-eyed crone in the ACTUAL Baum book.

  • "but she was truely evil before she was considered nice"

Yes, and no. In actuality, the Baum book made her the villain for TWO PAGES. That meant very little. Maggie did the film version, which also had her as a villain, but in this case, you could acutally see why she did what she did, almost sympathizing with her on some levels. Furthermore, when Baum wrote the story, both witches of Oz--good Glinda & the "wicked" witch--were inspired by the SAME person, his sufferagist mother-in-law, Matilda.

  • There's comparisons to be made between Matilda Gage (Baum's inspiration for both witches, since she was as personable as Glinda, but when voicing her sufferagist cause, she could be as commanding as Elphaba), Magaret Hamilton (when not in-character, she was a nice lady, hence why some takes--such as torching the Scarecrow--were so difficult, never mind that she acknowledged her own lack of beauty, when compared to Judy or Billie), & the "Wicked" portrayal (therein, she was simply misunderstood).

  • @pdorn777: I doubt it, since she returned home well after recording. Sure, her face still tinted green, but she was still his mother at the end of it. And really, outside of character, Maggie was one of the nicest ladies once could meet for her time.

  • @pdorn777: Actually, Maggie said in an interview that it was hard to discuss the role at first, because she was afraid for her son (Ham), thinking he would be mocked for being...well...a literal "Son of a Witch", as it were. Furthermore, the fact that she scared so many kids is probably why she appeared in-costume TWICE on Mr. Rogers & even did a cameo on Sesame Street as well. Oh the irony, since Jim Henson was himself an Oz fan!

  • @TherealRNO Where did u see the interview? youtube? i'd watch anything to see maggie :)

  • @antlantis7: I read the part about Maggie being afraid for her son in one of the various documentary books stocked at the Oz Museum when I previously worked there. As for the part about her appearance on Mr. Rogers & Sesame Street, that I saw when I was a little boy in reruns. And to the part about Jim being an Oz fan, that part I read in one of those short biography books found at my local library, in particular, the part where Jim lists some of his inspirations.

  • @TherealRNO Thats cool :) Yeah i heard about her appearing on Mr. Rogers neighborhood and Sesame Street, but i read it got taken off TV cuz parents complained it scared too many children. Weird thing is, she never scared me when i was little and personally was my favorite character and actress :D

  • @antlantis7: Same here, at least where Oz is concerned.

  • @TherealRNO Yep!

  • @antlantis7 Wow, i just read that Maggies dog Otto a miniature dashund, was originally supposed to play toto.

  • My faorite scene is right after she says to Dorothy "I can't wait forever to get those shoes!" and then she seems to float effortlessly up the stairs and out of the room with her dress flailing in the breeze. So surreal! There will never be another Witch as played by the incomparable Margaret Hamilton. She has set the standard as she still frightens children today. My little cousin watched it with me, aged 6 or so in the 80s and she started having nightmares. Her mother was mad at me.

  • OH ELPHABA! It's okay, I know what you've been through.

  • This is who I'm playing in my town's summer musical. It's going to be a blast!

  • Margaret also showed some of her 'witchiness' in Mickey Rooney's Babes In Arms and Stablemates. I thought her especially good in Stablemates.

  • was i the only person who at one point in my life thought she could be a man in drag?

  • Why aren't there many movies about witches?

  • BEFORE SHE BECAME A WITCH SHE WAS A KINDERGARDEN TEACHER PLEASE COMMEENT!!!

  • @TheJchidester maggie is my favorite actress. I think it is because when I was small she was simply the witch, the scariest apparition in my experience. I came to understand, while idly you-tubing about her on a recent vacation, she was the anti-thesis of the character she portrayed. That evoked a feeling of regret she was gone, and I never even had a glimpse of her out of character. Funny thing. I watch her witch clips, and I don't see a trace of " Maggie" anywhere.

  • @lutherheggs Margaret Hamilton is one of my favorite actresses of all time. For proof, i've even went on wikipedia, typed in Margaret Hamilton, and scrolled down to where it says filmographity. There, you would find all the wonderful films maggie did. So then i made a tab and went on youtube. Then i type in a movie she's been on, then i click on it and skip the movie until i see maggie, right down the time, and wallah! i can see maggie hamilton whenever i want! so far i found about 12 films :)

  • @antlantis7 Maggie's a favorite of mine, too. It's always such a pleasant surprise to see her in a movie. Like meeting up with an old friend.

  • @Jayee123 Cool. Its nice to know i'm not the only fan here of maggie. I loved her since i was 11. I watch her in a movies almost everyday. True legand.

  • @Jayee123 Wow, i just read that Maggies dog Otto a miniature dashund, was originally supposed to play toto.

  • @lutherheggs BTW if you want i can send u a message with movies on youtube with margaret hamilton and the time on the movie she's on since your a really big fan of her like me :D

  • @TheJchidester: And a yearly decade after Oz, she became a member of the school board. Imagine her staring down students and falculty alike! But seriously, out of character, Magaret Hamilton was one of the nicest ladies of her era at MGM.

  • Nothing like cocaine to put you out!

  • @remulak56 Umm...cocaine come from the coca plant. Opium comes from poppies, which is used to make heroin...which will make you nod off.

  • Margaret Hamilton was a babe !!!!!

  • my dad told me that the witch scared the crap outta him when he wuz a kid :)

  • Margaret Hamilton scared me my entire childhood............Best Villain of all time and Darth Vader can Never defeat Her!.......

  • @redmark19666 regan "your mother sucks cocks in hell" macneil, the possessed child in the exorcist, holds that silver screen title, hands down

  • Now, where do you get opium, then refine it into heroin? Poppies, poppies, mostly from Afganistan. Dorothy is not the problem, witchie woman. You want to put the whammy on the Taliban.

  • I AM THE WITCH

  • Poppies......he,he,he,he,he,

  • Poppies, the marjuanna of its time

  • the wicked witch of the west is in more dire need of cunnilingus then any woman in history.

  • Her and Darth Vader would make a great match.

  • @RmFrRifleman

I thought dick cheney was already married...

  • Gota be honest...she still creeps me out...

  • @silvershale1 when i was like 5 have a bad Dream and i neverrrr loveee this movie becuase of herrr!!

  • "I'll get you my little pretty! ...and your little DOG too!" :DD

  • I wonder if she ever had a sore throat after doing these scenes.

  • "Something with POOOISON in it I think...with POOOOISON in it."

  • ELPHIE YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • um dacatholicbandorgan: vvvvvvvv

this was made a longg time before wicked, so dont blame MGM.

wicked was made off this movie. :)

  • @Anna433 actually, it was made off the book Wicked my Gregory Maguire.

  • icey butts

  • LOL!

  • Elpheba is not evil like the bastards at MGM made her out to be. How would you feel if someone dropped a house on your handicapped sister, whom you promised to take good care of?

  • @dacatholicbandorgan Dude, this scene you're looking at, this scene right here is from The Wizard of Oz, filmed in 1939, 72 years ago. So I'm guessing thats way before Wicked even came about? By the way, saw Wicked a few weeks ago, it was AWESOME!!

  • @timtam20292 Omgosh its only a Wicked Fan funny (which I think would count as a mentally insane Wicked Fan Funny LOL) , btw Wicked IS Awsome!

  • Want a REAL mind f*ck?? Stop the video at :37 seconds, the second time she says poppies. The director uses HUMANS first (check lower right hand side) then morphs to flowers. *Note the naked people on all fours, giving you the moon. This was INTENTIONALLY done.... just watch, it's really there!

  • I see it now

  • @RockDaddy777 - There are a lot of medications, like Haldol, Seroquel, or Zyprexia that may be helpful to relieve your hallucinations

  • The best witch ever.

  • I can't describe how perfect Mrs. Hamilton was for this role. Every time I see it -- I am still in awe. It's perfection and nobody can touch this, -- ( not that they would ).

  • Margaret Hamilton played this part to perfection. When I was a child, she scared the living daylights out of me every time I watched this movie! She had some of the best and most quotable lines in the film! :)

  • Comment removed

  • * doesn't sound or look

Except of course she is GREEN, lol :P

  • Oh, LOL!

I have never seen this film before! :((

I'm a big fan of the musical, which I'm seeing AGAIN next week and am currently reading the novel, Wicked.

Though.. This Witch doesn't sound like the musical/book Elphaba :D

Okay.. I should watch this film, lol!!

    xxxxxxxx

  • Well, that's because Wicked, and The Wizard of Oz, are NOT the same.

Wicked is based soley on the Wicked Witch of the West and her life and times.

The Wizard of Oz came before Wicked,

  • Thats because this isn't Elphaba. L . Frank Baum wrote "The Wizard of Oz" a LONG time ago...and "Wicked" was published only recently. "Wicked" is basically a fanfic. The Witch is actually very evil.

  • THANK YOU!

  • WELCOME :P

  • Agreed. I found Wicked to be interesting and fun, but she was truely evil before she was considered nice. I never liked how in the musical and story they make it look like the Lion and Tin-Man are out for revenge. Yes they came to get the broom and she did mess up their lives when attempting to help them, but I found the original story of them just wanting to save their friend more redeemable. Never understood why she set the Scarecrow on fire either. Still all the versions are great.

  • @EABchannel333: Umm..no. See, though the CHARACTER itself was deemed evil, she was BASED ON Matilda Gage, Baum's sufferagist mother-in-law, whose noble cause interferred with white male dominance, which was the accepted norm at the time. Oh, the irony, given how Wicked was written in 1995! Why, Mrs. Baum herself (Matilda's own daughter) said that Matilda could be as dainty and personable as Glinda on the one hand, yet be as demanding and commanding as The Wicked Witch when voicing her views.

  • This film scared the s*** out of me when I was a kid, especially the flying monkeys... but it remains one of my favorites

  • Me and my bff had to make cupcakes at school that had poppyseeds in them and we kept saying "With poison in it! Poppies..Poppies...Now they'll sleep..." And people kept looking at us lol

  • lol! Sounds like a laugh riot!

  • Best witch ever, people still quote the wicked witch of the west.

  • I'll get you my pretty AND YOUR LITTLE DOG TOO

  • haha I wish they had the Poppie scene in Wicked.

  • omg i love margaret hamilton playing the wicked witch and judy garland said the hardest thing to do was to be afraid of margaret hamilton because she was so sweet and when lorna luft did it in the lowry production she scared the living daylights out of me and when she appears in the orange smoke and when she comes out of the roof of her house that scared me half to death lol. xx

  • I'd much rather hang with her than with anyone else. "Wicked"? So be it!

  • she's my favoritee person, & i AM her & i've loved her & those Monkeys for 50 years. thanks. i'm loking for auntie em in the crytal ball, auntie em, auntie em
