I dont wish to be a downer but....I remember playing this in the car a couple of days after 9/11/01 and had to pull over the side of the road and catch my breath. Seemed almost written for it.
Awesome. I used to have a girlfriend called Tara who loved this. She taught me about life, being an adult, the power of suspenders, responsibility, loving other people, selflessness. There's a meaning to life. Sweet God and Tara, yes there is.
Hugh Whittaker is available for weddings, parties, private functions, public beheadings and if you fancy a second hand car you'll get on with him like a house on fire.
@davebuchan81 Obviously that should say me and my brother ( well it should say my brother and i but since i'm from ull and its the internet who gives a fuck about grammar)
@yorkie6687 I don't knock Hull .............and I still live here..........grammar isn't usually considered to be particularly important in Hull though, and I find that fact amusing.............. btw its pronounced 'ull , and that's not knocking anyone :)
What a band, even though Hugh got sent down for assault and Stan opened a veggie cafe that went bust, I still love them with all my heart. Hull 4 London Nil was rarely off the playlist in my mum's pub, one of the last bands I remember where they were universally loved by old and young.
@DrJamesFeelgood So sad to hear about Stan's café, had no idea he was veg (like me !), now I appreciate him even more ! I read somewhere he was now a writer of stories for children.
As for Hugh, the knife-assault was because that guy had owed him money for like ever...!
heaton looks his best here young skinny cocky as time wore on he seemed to get a little fatter his clothes dont fit so well his hands in his pockets not knowing what to do with his hands in fact as time wore on in the videos he looks more awkward in his pullovers(working class) ? and much more self conscious
@ilikesmayonaise Au contraire mon frere, when Madness broke up in 1986, having enjoyed 7-8 years of chart success, the housmartins had their first hit. Although they had been a band since 1983 the "classic" Housmartins line up, including Norman Cook had only taken shape the year before(I think)...
ahead of their time.the smiths comparission is understandable as both heaton who was born in heswall on the wirrall and morrisey in salford where proper north west lads who were from working class stock.housemartins were more political but that shouldnt take away from their lyrics.very powerfull words and definatly relevant still today in england.
i was/am a big .. massive fan of both housemartins and the smiths.. paul probs had better singing voice but both spoke bout things that i could relate to.. both bands were/are massive to me.. still relevant today.. ahead of there time .. or maybe I just drank too much Jack .. hahahaa .. and just to catch up try a bit of Oasis or maybe even Stereophonics .. Merry Xmas all :p
This sentiment is just so beautiful... Hugh Whittaker is the drummer on London 0 Hull 4. He attacked his business partner with an axe and firebombed his house after he cheated him out of a pile of cash. And wouldn't you, as it's so hard to come by in Hull. I think he lives in Leeds now...
Do we have any idea what IS going on anymore? Society has gone to ruin.... thank god for volunteers and people that take their opinions and air them.. politicians? pah!
There really were some amazing male vocals in the 80's, not like now. Guys back then grew up on a steady diet of Motown and it really showed in the 80's, glad I experienced it!
Wonderful. These guys were visoinaries. When this sound broke it was audible epiphany. Hearing it now takes me back to nights in Dublin in 1986, walking home with this album (yes, a big vinyl pizza tray) on my mind.

Give the HM their due. They're not Madness and they're certainly not Jack Black, who was a snot-nosed 17-yr old in 1986. This track, like so many others of theirs, is far ahead of it's time: "THINK for minute". Are we capable of such a stretch? I doubt it. Read the lyrics. PH and Fatboy Slim rule.
Yes, this is my favourite too. Err... not sure about them being "different" from other acts of the time - do you not think all the tom-foolery in the video is a bit reminiscent of Maddness? Ahh, the dawn of laddism! Great example of soprano voice applied to pop. I wonder if he was classically trained?
Madness were winding up when the housemartins were just hitting the charts...Similar acting the maggot going on in the videos alright...I think the Housemartins were alot deeper and political.
