  • Great stuff from the boys... plenty of young pretenders to their throne but none will ever cut the mustard. Saw 'em at Tower but had to go back next day for my shoes.... Oh those wonderful memories of sticky threadbare carpet! What a shithole but always good for a laugh and an hour! Might write a song called Tower for an hour...; gotta be a winner!

  • too much beautiful

  • love this song

  • "Hugh" if your out there I'm still single.

  • amazing band beautiful music great lyrics now lost in time....... thanks for the memories............

  • to the prick on here its spelt TORIES, and people vote em in coz after years of labour throwing money at problems people realise we need someone thats hard but fair, you cant just throw money at problems, thats why after EVERY labour term of miss rule the countries FUCKED!, check your history daft cunt, stop listenin to what the BBC tell ya!!

  • This is a kind of a band tat leave you a taste of some more long after they were gone...

  • Housemartins and wonderful youth :)

  • @mrszozop Im Alan Partridge and like a thief in the night.......in opportunised street im havin that line.:)

  • @modsheff1 :))

  • I dont wish to be a downer but....I remember playing this in the car a couple of days after 9/11/01 and had to pull over the side of the road and catch my breath. Seemed almost written for it.

  • Awesome. I used to have a girlfriend called Tara who loved this. She taught me about life, being an adult, the power of suspenders, responsibility, loving other people, selflessness. There's a meaning to life. Sweet God and Tara, yes there is.

  • fantastic song.

  • how in the world can any normal person vote for these toriies , honestly it brings me to tears .have people no memories

  • alto tema !!!!

  • Hugh Whittaker is available for weddings, parties, private functions, public beheadings and if you fancy a second hand car you'll get on with him like a house on fire.

  • Hi Hugh! You crazy Drummerman! Your mum used to babysit be and my brother - You came round and gave us a VHS tape of Madness videos - Thank you! :)

Baggy trousers kept us entertained for hours..........

  • @davebuchan81 Obviously that should say me and my brother ( well it should say my brother and i but since i'm from ull and its the internet who gives a fuck about grammar)

  • @davebuchan81 Don't knock Hull, I lived there for five years and loved it, peace!

  • @yorkie6687 I don't knock Hull .............and I still live here..........grammar isn't usually considered to be particularly important in Hull though, and I find that fact amusing.............. btw its pronounced 'ull , and that's not knocking anyone :)

  • Stan Cullimore IMPUGNA la chitarra.

  • Fatboy Slim is playing piano!!!

  • Love the way he pushes the drummer out of the way lol

  • class band...you just dont get this kind of music nowadays....heaton./.genius..

  • A dancinha e a linguinha são as melhores!

  • What a band, even though Hugh got sent down for assault and Stan opened a veggie cafe that went bust, I still love them with all my heart. Hull 4 London Nil was rarely off the playlist in my mum's pub, one of the last bands I remember where they were universally loved by old and young.

  • @DrJamesFeelgood So sad to hear about Stan's café, had no idea he was veg (like me !), now I appreciate him even more ! I read somewhere he was now a writer of stories for children.

As for Hugh, the knife-assault was because that guy had owed him money for like ever...!

Really a great band, Paul's voice is unique.

  • @DrJamesFeelgood All that stuff just makes me love them more to be honest!!!

  • Amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing!

  • proper music by real musicians.

  • this dude has some serious range!!

  • catchy tune the drummer looks like Mr Bean

  • Favorite from this band..awesome!

  • Will Mellor sings well!

  • Great Song, I forgot how great this song was.

  • Fred Perry shirts, light blue jeans, close crop short back and sides. Its got to be the mid-80s.

This track is better than I remembered, should have been number 1.

  • @mayakane hey I was 43 last month still have a No 1 all around ,wearing fred perry T shirts doc loafers and blue jeans LOL

  • me encanto

  • David Tennant brought me here :D

  • to benny.. RIP. what a song...xxx

  • heaton looks his best here young skinny cocky as time wore on he seemed to get a little fatter his clothes dont fit so well his hands in his pockets not knowing what to do with his hands in fact as time wore on in the videos he looks more awkward in his pullovers(working class) ? and much more self conscious

  • I love these guys so much

  • Madness were a novelty act, like the goodies.

  • @TheFunkadelicFan With all all due respect, I don't think so.

  • I like how they dance.

  • the words are more up to date than when they were wrighten in the eighties

  • @ilikesmayonaise Au contraire mon frere, when Madness broke up in 1986, having enjoyed 7-8 years of chart success, the housmartins had their first hit. Although they had been a band since 1983 the "classic" Housmartins line up, including Norman Cook had only taken shape the year before(I think)...

  • ahead of their time.the smiths comparission is understandable as both heaton who was born in heswall on the wirrall and morrisey in salford where proper north west lads who were from working class stock.housemartins were more political but that shouldnt take away from their lyrics.very powerfull words and definatly relevant still today in england.

  • "And now its almost here,

And now its on it's way,

I cant help saying told you so and have a nice final day". Even today (especially at the moment) this song still means a lot to me.

  • Hugh is a lovely fella; most horribly dull video without him, this one would be!

(and he played with David Westlake in the Servants mk2 too!)

  • i was/am a big .. massive fan of both housemartins and the smiths.. paul probs had better singing voice but both spoke bout things that i could relate to.. both bands were/are massive to me.. still relevant today.. ahead of there time .. or maybe I just drank too much Jack .. hahahaa .. and just to catch up try a bit of Oasis or maybe even Stereophonics .. Merry Xmas all :p

  • they should go on x factor show all these wanabs how its done

  • why cant people do as the song suggests especially tories

  • one of my fav bands , one were you have listen to what they have to say

  • lovely song

  • this is magical! every bit is pitch perfect - paul heaton's falsetto soars! effortless!!!

  • This sentiment is just so beautiful... Hugh Whittaker is the drummer on London 0 Hull 4. He attacked his business partner with an axe and firebombed his house after he cheated him out of a pile of cash. And wouldn't you, as it's so hard to come by in Hull. I think he lives in Leeds now...

  • Do we have any idea what IS going on anymore? Society has gone to ruin.... thank god for volunteers and people that take their opinions and air them.. politicians? pah!

  • Didnt the drummer do a stretch for armed robbery in the end

  • the most underated classic

  • f.you demondelight ur the peado

  • I dedicate this video to Angelica864. I love you, suga!

  • You no what? This video it grow on you. Now I singing it to my air guitar in front of the mirror...lol. No. Really..

  • Schöner Anblick. Nur Weiße mit ordentlichen Frisuren. Die Musik ist auch schön

  • lovely....

  • the best ,its better than the rest

  • what a talented group of young lads to make songs of such quality, love it!

  • There really were some amazing male vocals in the 80's, not like now. Guys back then grew up on a steady diet of Motown and it really showed in the 80's, glad I experienced it!

  • I'd like to see this guys doing an album w/ The Commodores.

  • Clever! Wicked Clever! I Like these boys! Can't help themselves to wink and blow a raspberry even when their being ...ahem.....sincere!

  • Norman Cook on the Piano...

I definetively like his work during his FREAK POWER years:

    -Rush

-Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out

He is FatBoy Slim, Norman Cook in pure stile..

A genius ahead of the rest of genius...

  • Like the Housemartins? Look across the pond and listen to The Connells...

  • Prefer the album version but I think they prob changed it for the single because every time I hear the albums intro i think.....REM!

  • Qui, abbiamo Norman Cook alle tastiere.

  • classic old school martin tune i miss them days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • fatboy slim on piano wooo

  • Wonderful. These guys were visoinaries. When this sound broke it was audible epiphany. Hearing it now takes me back to nights in Dublin in 1986, walking home with this album (yes, a big vinyl pizza tray) on my mind.

  • That drummer looks like gollum! The Marts are far funnier than Madness without even knowing it themselves.

  • Right well im 16, im into R'N'B, grime and hip hop and all that but then again im still playing this song because the housemartins are soooo good. My friends are like :| whenever they see me listening to this because they think grime hip hop rnb are my genre but theyre wrong because housemartins are sooooooo good.

  • lovely stuff. wots with heatons londonesque accent at the end, be ull and proud

  • do you remember when we were all that skinny, and some of us that talented.

  • reminds me of my first car , me and the love of my life on the back seat in lovers lane, castlemain xxxx cooling in the footwell, never realising life would never get any better than that, life all mapped out, funny how a few chords of a song transport you back to 1988 as if it was yesterday , will treasure them for ever-thanks samantha jane owen from wednesbury for everthing you gave me - I STILL LOVE YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Errr... I'm the father of Samantha Jane and I'd like to have a chat with sometime sonny Jim!!!

  • fuck me thats spooky.........he died about ten years ago , and just for the record she didnt appreciate that affair you had in 1983 and if it wasnt for me insisting she came back to your house after she ran away she would have never gone back. .....R I P ron R I P

  • are you still with her

  • my heart is ! but she has been married for 20 years now with 3 lovely kids , nice house , a job she likes , loving husband etc , i took a distinctley different path i life and seemed to have made it hard work , the aftermath of a broken heart i suppose , well at least know what love feels like!! god bless you and peace and love to you forever.whoever you are !

  • God bless you sir!

  • never give up hope, you don't know what's round the corner. you could end up with her or there could be someone else meant for you. stick to the plan that was made for you.

  • thats really nice that mate! you normally get so much nasty comments on here people arguin over stuff. thats a quality story tho pal...

  • @MrLaydownsally Aw that's beautiful man

  • One of the finest indie bands ever, let alone the 80's. This version is so much better than the album one and is one of my favourite tracks ever written!!

  • ♥ as musicas deles sao muiito calmas e liindas ♥

  • Heaton - 'the voice'.

  • long live the idea of real music :)

  • um dos melhores grupos musicais de todos os tempos.

  • simple quality ....

  • Has there ever been a more perfect pop video?

  • eh daniel thanks again for getting me on this band:D

  • Absolutley Fabulous Thanks For Upping This One , Fond Memories Of The Early 80`s

  • pure, really pure

it's an encapsulated bubble of pure perfection

    thanks Housemartin people

Y Gracias Housemartins!

  • definatley not m8, and i bet you can guess the two little pricks names who broke the mould ,

  • aye, they dont make bands like this anymore.

  • um more that they MAKE bands today thats wat kills good bands that are created through friendships instead of corporation's garbage

  • your bang on pal, bands dont have fans anymore they have customers!

  • Does anyone know the guitar chords for this song please?

  • Denilson's solo ukulele version of this song is simple harrowing.

  • Paul Heaton's voice is pure gold,on another note though i cant decide which version of this i like the best this version or the faster one off the album??..

  • Yes, Hugh Whitaker is my hero. hmm... well ...for this moment ...

  • Housemartins WOW Utterly POWERFUL and INCREDIBLE ! These guys shaped the lives of many movers and shakers! We need this power back now. All we have now is alas APATHY !

What has happened to our youth ? I love the new stuff, but it lacks the true desire to change anything for the best! Love :)

  • The most people don't like them. I don't know why? Great song from the housemartins!

  • well most people are idiots imo :D

  • Is the guy on trumpet the same guy from Levi Stubbs Tears?

  • I think it was Guy Barker on Trumpet

  • Give the HM their due. They're not Madness and they're certainly not Jack Black, who was a snot-nosed 17-yr old in 1986. This track, like so many others of theirs, is far ahead of it's time: "THINK for minute". Are we capable of such a stretch? I doubt it. Read the lyrics. PH and Fatboy Slim rule.

  • Hugh Whitaker on drums, what a fookin legend....

  • Good ol' lads from good ol' hull!

  • Yes, this is my favourite too. Err... not sure about them being "different" from other acts of the time - do you not think all the tom-foolery in the video is a bit reminiscent of Maddness? Ahh, the dawn of laddism! Great example of soprano voice applied to pop. I wonder if he was classically trained?

  • Madness were winding up when the housemartins were just hitting the charts...Similar acting the maggot going on in the videos alright...I think the Housemartins were alot deeper and political. Both are my favourite bands... However If I was going to compare the Housemartins to a band I think it would have to be the Smiths. Paul Heaton is not as self centred as Morrissey but both their lyrics deal with the problems of the working class, Pauls moreso. Housemartins are completely underestimated.

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire nice patrick bateman style musical dissection there, are you utterly insane ?

  • @pullupboy Ha ha ha, I dont even remember writing that comment. But dont get me started started on Huey Lewis.

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire very well said buddy....i really cant put into words how much i love this band, the music, the clothes and what they stood for.....just sheer innocent class!!!

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire I agree they are underrated. Paul's voice is the clincher here.

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire the Housemartins compared to the Smiths?...don't quit the day job.Totally different groups from every aspect.

  • @Hoovercat Totally different? I don't think so. I didn't say they sounded like one another. My point was that the messing that went on in the Housemartins videos etc disguised the serious issues that the Housemartins sang about. In the lyrics of both bands, irony and satire are used to convey a message, both wrote/composed intelligent and politically motivated songs and most of all, both bands have "The" at the start. So completely different? I think not.

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire Then you're wrong.

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire You make a brilliant point

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire

can't help feel they were both relevant maybe madness was slightly more palatable to londoners n housemartins for the north. i also question you chronology i consider those two relatively comtempory bands to one another

  • @ScubasteveScaryEire well said mate!

  • Hey ! on 1.22 was that pee wee herman guesting on vocals ?

absolutely a brilliant talented band...loved these guys..they were so different from the rest of the chart acts at the time...this is my favorite Hm track.

  • I love Housemartins,and this song...Splendid!

  • Oh dear! Nice tune but were they trying to be Madness in the video?

  • The trumpet guy looks like actor Jack Black!!! Realize he probably isn't thought :0)

  • hehe it is j black,,,,read this ages back,,,he was small time stand up at the time and was just flaged by his agent when living in london to do this....he didnt really play the trump and had never even heard of the band)

  • this was not jack black. In his memoirs he categorically refutes this rumour, stating that at the time he was in a re-education camp in pyongyang after crossing north koreas border to start a husking band. He was caught and sentenced to five years of hard labour.

  • Top Song

  • Norman Cook követte már akkor a freak Power a Beat's International és a Fatboy Slim irányvonalát..

  • Bring , bing back the 80s

  • Just gorgeous

  • Tremendous. This one makes me rethink what I'm listening to.

  • Housemartins was so important for the rise of the brit pop man.

  • They perform this tune with such ease...So natrual..Splendid...

  • @nidgybaby he should be in the bee gees.

  • fine tune.

  • I cant view it?

  • I like the album version also, it is a bit faster if my memory serves me :)

  • this is the best version imho!

  • Shit, this song is so damn beautiful. Brings back so many memories. Damn, where has the time gone.

  • Time moves to fast these days....but at least the memories stay with us..

  • just seeing this i was about to write the bloody thing - you blink and there goes a decade

  • is that the guy from beautiful south?? sounds just like him

  • it is him.

  • think...........brilliant!!! nuff said!

  • Class

  • classic !!

  • I had this video on a Betamax tape back in the 80's. Fantastic song, fantastic video, fantastic upload!

    Thanks a mill. :)

  • one of my fave songs =]

  • just brilliant

  • One of the best pop videos of the 80s
