It's an envelope filter, also called auto-wah, flea uses an old style ehx q-tron

Sorry man but the envelope filter and the auto-wah are differnt effects. The envelope filter is based on the amount of volume from the insturment to change the tone. Meaning the harder you hit the strings then the higher the envelope goes. The auto wah is automatic. Sorry just had to explain it.

actually, an envelope filter is just a type of auto-wah, and technically they should be called envelope followers, there are other ways of controlling the envelope, Voltage-control, LFO.

That's technically speaking though, to most people auto-wah and envelope filter mean the same thing.

All of them are so good it is easy to fixate on just one of them, but the truth is that they are all magnificent players, and they connect now musically in ways it just takes 20+ years to get to.

If you get the chance to see them live, do so.

Worth a 4 hour drive, for sure.
