  • Here I am to watch this AGAIN!! ... for the umpteenth time. This is my favourite Austen - *sigh*

  • maybe I am shallow but I cannot help but say thank goodness for books

they allow you to shape the characters' looks to your own convinience

to my reckoning anne was pretty not beautiful but pretty

captain wentworth was most definetely described as handsome and was certainly not so old

and as for elizabeth! heavens wasn't she supposed to be the beautidul Miss Elliot?

    I cannot watch this

  • ALERT just so everyone knows who may have just started watching this as of today Youtube has block some parts of this movie. I just watched it yesterday and it was fine.

THERE IS NO FREEDOM OF INFORMATION.

  • I'm so happy to have found this adaptation of my favorite of Jane Austens books. After reading and enjoying it so much I was disapointed by the more recent film. THis one does is superbly. Thank you for putting this up that I should find it and enjoy it.

  • Probably my favorite Austen novel! The protagonist is supposed to be past her prime...almost headed to old age. Austen tosses us a bone called hope. Yes, there is hope for all singles...

  • I really don't think that Elizabeth is pretty enough and anne is too old. She is only supposed to be 26 in the book. The actress looks to be in her late 30s.

  • Elizabeth was... ehm... not the exactly the handsomest woman I have ever seen but.. I suppose she has a good side hidden somewhere.. out of sight.. heh.. heh..

  • The girls in this are not very handsome....

  • I have 2 say....i am sorry as much as i love the story, the actors and actresses are very unattractive and I am rather put off by this version =] but those of you who like it i have no problem with.

  • @nessacheng you sound like that bloody snob sir walter elliot, , i like jane austen novels but they were all such a bunch of toffee nosed snobs.

  • I have never seen any version of this movie. I always intended to read the book

first, but since I have come across this I will give it a shot. I have read Pride &

Prejudice many times. I have 4 versions of P&P. My 2 fav are w/ Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle, & Elizabeth & David Rintoul. I Do like the B&W classic w/ Greer Garson& Lawrance Oliviar. There's some really good scenes in Keira K-Y's verson she's fine. To each his own. Erik & Vsangel it's nice to run into you again remb-r me B&B?

  • Anne is supposed to be dull. Her own family despised her. Her father here is perfect . And the end is magnificent.

  • @multical100 In the book, she is described as sweet and gentle. She is not dull.

  • Hmm... was that Aunt Petunia. I remember actors by the first characters I can remember seeing them play. To this day when I watch The Secret Garden my first thought is "Professor McGonagall!"

  • @postmoderna7

    "Shallowtude" is priceless.

  • i usually love jane austen; the casting is so bad i can't watch. lead character is too old and acting is bad - she needs to watch the lead actress in mansfield park that you uploaded.

  • why does everyone think they can boss Anne around and make decisions for her it annoys me......Anne, grow a backbone and tell them no or something

  • @ErikandVsangel I think she would like to have been able to do so, but she was penned in by societal constraints, which disallowed women's independence, unless they had the money through INHERITANCE to be independent. She was dependent on the kindness of others. Men were allowed to EARN money in a respectable manner; women were not.

  • @Vermontist yes i understand that but her own sisters took advantage of her kindness and were both rude to her at times, which was what i meant by her standing up for herself....

  • ElizaBEAST!!!! Damn that chick ugly as fuck!!

  • Thank god for movies. I've been reading the novel for a class that I have, but honestly I don't find it ridiculously entertaining. Doesn't Mr Sheperd look like John lennon?

  • Oh my gosh! Could somebody please do an adaptation of Persuasion with a good looking Anne?!

  • @marrymestevenash

Have you seen the 2007 adaptation by ITV? ( Captain Wentworth looks good in this one, I can assure you;P)

  • Oh dear god THAT's Ann? According to the book, she's supposed to be pretty! I mean a little "past her prime" but good-looking. Who's that hag? Sorry, i know it's shallow, but I can no longer watch... OMG, I think I see a moustache.

  • @KittenToez You are spot on i cannot watch either, i suppose that makes me shallow also.

  • @KittenToez while I find the actors to be very talented, I must admit that they could have used a better Ann. You're right, the book described her as being pretty....I don't know what happened to Elizabeth either! I don't think that makes us shallow, I mean the book clearly stated them as being beautiful....

  • @shangoshun

    (sad look) We're bad people.

  • @KittenToez hahahaha I guess we are :D

  • @shangoshun I think that Amanda Root as Anne is alright, especially as she's giving such a fine performance, but I agree about Elizabeth who is supposed to be regal, if not very beautiful.

  • This version cleverly recreates the characters crafted by Jane Austen. I love it!

  • UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMm wheres Rupert PJ? Oh yeah its the itv one with him in.....riiiiiight gunna go watch that now......

  • This is one my all time favourite movies. Ciaran HInds and Amanda Root play this movie so very well. The the scene where they meet at the back of the church and have realized they still love each other. Oh My. my heart stopped! The romance almost made me cry!

  • mrs. Croft is Dudley Dursley's mother, Harry Potter's aunt! how delightful.

  • @BlessInkompetence love it

  • persuasion is my favorite jane austen novel, because the romance is deeper and stronger than the other books. I also like how the heroine is older and more mature. it's all so understated and beautiful!

  • @TheMechanicalHound Exactly. Could not have said it better myself.

  • I thought Elizabeth should be beautiful? But she's not so beautiful here. I think I have to read the novel further. :)

  • thank u

  • I love this version, so atmospheric and sets the mood of Anne when she has withdrawn herself from life

  • One of my favorite versions of Persuasion. Thank you for posting!

  • Love this book and this version of it. It is way better than the 2007 version. i also like the book a lot better than Pride and Prejudice.

  • Anne's sister Mary is a po-faced, skinny whiney rat-bag... And 'I should not like to know her better at at all...' Mrs Clay is 'on the make' after Anne's father and her Dad is a vain.pompous ass...

He makes me so angry, in his treatment of Anne... BUT I have read the book so I know the less deserving get their cum-uppance... :0)x

  • The most romantic Austen book by far. This is certainly the best adaptation too. Thanks for posting!

  • this is my favorite version!! Thanks!

  • JANE AUSTEN??? HELP ME OUT !!!!

  • This is my favorite Jane Austen novel. I like both film versions of Persuasion, but Redgrave is sublime in this.

  • LOVE this version!! The 2007 version pales in comparison after watching this.

  • Corin Redgrave plays an excellent Mr. Eliot. So ridiculous and vain!

  • this is phenomenal

  • Elizabitch.

  • @MrZebraZombie Oh my god. I'm dying xD

  • @MrZebraZombie must agree with you ,she is one and a big one..

  • maybe its the order i watched them in, but i prefer this version to the 2007 one... the 2007 seemed a little dry after this. plus ciaran hinds....well, enough said. :)

  • This adaptation is superb...it really captures an atmosphere. Crawling into one of my all time favourites

  • Original music by Jeremy Sams?? They play Chopin most of the time, which is a very good choice, I think. After a Chopin prelude Sams alters it and composes it to death. Yes, great work. ;-)

  • I agree with you. This is the best version of Persuasion. Amanda Root was just perfect, and so was Ciaran Hinds.

  • I really like this version and I really like the 2007 version... Heh. I just like this story. But I do have to say that 2007 is my favorite of the two.

  • They are all extremely old-looking compared to what the book describes. And no, they don't grow on you. Not me at least. They look more like they're in their 40s.

  • Bought the 2007 version today and it was so beautiful!! :)

  • Umm I cannot agree. I think in tone and visuals the 2007 version is so much better. The actor who plays the father in the other film to me was more in the line of what you would imagine him to be.

  • Here I am ... watching this film again!!! :) - I do believe I have lost count of the number of times I keep coming back to this ... LOL!

  • @Shinkansen91 Hey don't feel so bad I've watched it quite a few times myself. LOL

  • @soulgirl66 - LOL - you're a PERSUASION addict too eh! :) Nice to know that that I'm not the only one!!

  • the actress who plays anne played miss.temple in jane erye once!

  • This is an extremely fine film version of Persuasion, immeasurably better than the 2007 adaptation, which I found so extremely bad that I had to force myself to watch it to the end, and regretted that I had done so. Thanks for posting.

  • This is a good adaption, but I really dislike the way this actress plays Elizabeth: she is supposed to be very pretty and no matter how silly she is, she would have acted as a lady, in stead of just laying there in her chair and eating chocolates.

  • This is one of those movies that grows on you and before you know it-it's one of your favorite. Thank you very much for posting this!

  • Its true that the two leads look a little old. However. I'm not sure if thats what the producers intended but I think it gets across the idea of being 'past it' particularly in Anne's case. 27 was, at the time, a very late age to be unmarried. Nowadays a comparable age for a woman would be late 30s going on 40, I beleive the actress was mid-thirties when she did this role.

  • best film adaptation of austen better even than P&P

  • This version is more artistic, than the one made in 2007. The Run Rabbit Run scene was pathetic and their kiss (2007) was painful to watch. Really. I am yet to read a book, but this version explains who is who so much better. This Anne looks very warm-hearted and truly devoted to her hero (not out of desperation but out of love and life philosophy)

  • @Ivorybird09 The heroine in the 2007 version spent so much time running around and crying to herself; it's a wonder she didn't get winded. Those voice-overs were tiresome also. Also, while I think Anthony Head is a fine actor, his Walter Elliott is a harsh man, vicious and tyrannical, compared to the doddering fool we see here, which is a much better portrayal of a man lacking in sense.

  • a good movie :)

  • but she's horrible!!!!!!

  • An excellent version of this story, although the two main actors were a bit old for the parts.

  • this movie is so amazing - it totally captures the feel of the book!! and you really feel for anne; her family is so wacked! i don't know how she turned out so well...LOVE HER!

  • Here I am ... back again ... to watch this film for the umpteenth time. I just love this version of the story!. Mansfieldparkmovie ... if I havent said this before - THANK YOU SO MUCH for uploading this - you are a star!!! :)

  • R.I.P. Corin

  • this is by far the best version imo. yeah i like sally hawkins and she did a good job. but amanda root just embodies Anne. shes who i picture whenever i read the book. and i LOVED ciaran hinds. no contest between him and the other guy

  • is this version or the 2000's version more accurate to the book?

  • IMHO, this one... but both take liberties of course...

  • @pastaroni This one is more accurate, not only to the book but to the times. No Bath marathons!

  • Much as I like Sally Hawkins, I find I enjoy the cast/version of Persuasion so much better than the more recent ones. I'm a Ciaran Hinds fan, anyway. I like the actresses who played the sisters in this version better.

  • Okay, as much as I enjoyed seeing Adam from Spooks just looking fine, this production is step beyond (of course, IMHO)

  • Well, we all have 'our' own opinion, which is

better, I think the Sally Hawkins/Rupert Penry

Jones is so much better, Hawkins & Jones

are superb!! so, it's hard to say which is better,

it just depends on the person...

  • Definitely prefer this version to the 2007 Masterpiece Theater one. May not be the best Jane Austen novel, but the one that tugs at my heartstrings the most.

  • i have to totally agree!

  • Goodness if I had a sister like that.

  • sorry but ann is AWFUL

  • I love this movie my only thought is Ann could be beautiful if they just changed her hairstyle a bit.

  • One thing I like about this movie is that she gets progressively prettier over the course of the film as she and Wentworth are reunited and fall back in love. By the end she's gorgeous.

  • I'm reading the book for the moment and that's exactly how they describe her in the book...

  • agreed...she's glowing by the end and Ann is still my fav character besides Fanny

  • The music is wonderful. The incidental music was written by the performer, I believe. So talented. The Chopin and Bach are so very well played!

How could anyone fault Amanda Root for this performance? I would much rather see a normal looking Anne than a Keira Knightley type, wouldn't you? (And Keira can't act.) What's wrong w/ a love story about normal looking people?

  • don't mention her. They butchered the book by casting her. Darcy was great, Bingly was still better, but Knightley as Lizzy? Nope, the 90ies Austen-adaptations were certainly better than the 2000.

  • @suzearl i know it´s your opinion...but as much as u don´t like keira as lizzy u can´t say that she can´t act! and why isn´t she normal looking?

    anyway..so far i´ve liked every austen-film:)

but i have to say that i prefer this version to the new one. (same with emma, i like the paltrow version more than the new one, but they are both great^^)

  • @suzearl Agreed! And in the book, she wasn't even supposed to be pretty!

  • @suzearl I understand your comment about 'normal looking,' especially concerning Jane Austen casting. However I challenge the notion that Keira can't act. I believe she has done some amazing work, i.e. Dr. Zhivago or Domino...

  • This is the adaptation I've wanted to see, I did'nt know what year it was. Thank you so much for posting!

  • This my favorite adaptation of the novel, which I have read a few times. It is my second fav Austen book behind Pride and Predujice (of course).

  • Arghhhhh I know Sir Walter is fictional, but I'm a huge supporter of the Navy, and . . .well his remarks just make me want to wring his little neck. At least Ann has the good taste to marry a salior. Go Ann!

  • Man, her sister is a major turd.

  • First things first--a novel of genius, surpassing genius, by a writer in the company of Shakespeare--also I think this is the best adaptation of an Austen novel I have seen--the way the film fuses the two endings (her rewrite when she was dying by far the better) is splendid. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are wonderful.

  • beautifully shot - very impressive

  • I think Anne looks like she is not happy and satisfied with her life, but her features are pretty.

  • anything done by the bbc is always good :D

  • Except Northanger Abbey. God did they screw that up...

  • i agree her sister looks like a rat lol. haha i will thumbs down for this comment.

  • wau...Ciaran Hinds ,,,oh :o)

  • i liked the book. but i tought they would put prettier actors XD but i think anne and th captain were well chosed

  • I think this movie is great it's a lot like the book. But I like the 2007 version too ^^

  • The longer you look at Anne, the prettier she gets. I think that's the effect that they want. Because Jane Austen wrote Anne to be plain. But her beauty shines from the inside as opposed to her sister and Mrs. Clay.

  • @wackycheez Jane Austen absolutely did NOT write Anne to be plain. She wrote her to be 27 years old and grown thin and haggard from lack of love. Jane very plainly introduces Anne as having been a "very pretty girl" and speaks of "her delicate features and mild dark eyes", and later talks of Anne's "very pretty, very regular features". When love comes back into Anne's life, her beauty returns as well.

  • @wackycheez

In the book she always described her as beautiful.

  • @wackycheez i agree that she gets prettier but jane austen didnt write anne to be plain. i am rereading the book for the umpteenth time and it clearly says anne was pretty but that her beauty faded after refusing wentworth.

  • Anne was supposed to be plain?? I think she's beautiful because she's played by Amanda Root. Her voice is every bit as pretty as her face. But she seems unhappy, and her eyes always look wide and scared like Cousin Alfie's when he was little and curly-haired.

  • @wackycheez

I think Jane Austen always did that to all her leading ladies with the exception of Emma. Elizabeth bennet was also supose to be rather plain. . .

  • She had been pretty when she was young, but she had "lost her bloom". I'd lose my bloom too, being treated like she was.

  • anne looks like a 40 year old servant.

  • lol

  • Yeah, Anne's not so cute in this version...In the novel her appearances improve when she goes to Lyme. I haven't watched the whole thing yet, but I imagine they'll spruce her costumes and makeup up a bit later in the film to reflect this transformation?

  • @steelstrings87 its not her appearance so much that he loves, its her heart and her mind. Thats why its a story and not real life, lol.

  • I love this version very much and found it to be quite like the book. The cast is especially wonderful, big fan of Ciaran Hinds, he makes quite the dashing Captain Wentworth.

  • I wonder why but mysteriously I found this video funny.lol

  • anne looks wayyyy older than elizabeth

  • I can't even stand to watch Mrs. Clay.

"We weren't all born to be handsome."

    So is fugly!

  • The admiral has the sexiest voice!

  • Thanks for posting..I love this version.. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds are wonderful...the rest of the cast is too.. I wore mine out and need to order another.

    Mom and daughter bonding film.

  • lol, the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice is my bonding film with my mum. Jane Austen always creates some kind of magic in her stories ^^

  • @midwesternmom. I totally agree with you. I also need to get a new copy of this film. I can't stop watching it!!

  • whoa, Elizabeth was supposed to be really pretty wasn't she?

  • i love this version..i just wish the actors looked more like they were in their late 20's

  • If Amanda Root is 27, I am 3. All the people in this opening seen are so incredibly awkward it was almost painful to watch. I'm not sure I can keep trying. The 2007 version is incredibly beautiful, however.

  • I have to agree with you on that, and i'm actually a fan of Ciaran and Amanda normally, its just in this they seem to look very uncomfortable in their roles, especially Amanda, but i love the story and the 2007 version.

  • Have you read the book? The whole of the discussion and Anne's life is uncomfortable with her father and older sister. That's the point. She is playing it perfectly.

  • @cobaltcanarycherry

Yes i own the book and have read it several times. I appreciate and know that Anne has lost her bloom and the relationship with her father and older sister is uncomfortable to her, but even when she's away from them in Lyme Amanda still didnt look comfortable in the role.

I'll watch this version again at some point and maybe it will grow on me more.

  • Even when she's smiling she looks worried to me, and i mean no disrespect because in a whole i like the actress.

  • I'm trying to find all the Jane Austen movies...the good versions.

I haven't heard of this movie, but I've heard alot of people talking about it.

I just got done watching Northanger Abbie and really enjoyed it (never saw that one either) looking forward to watching this one :)

  • I too , was mesmerized by this version of Persuasion. Amanda Root was brilliant as was Mr. Hinds. It was great to see Pheobe Nichols again so long after her Brideshead Revisited days! The locations are wonderful, the music perfect and I love the strong autumnal look and feel of the movie!!

  • this is a far better version than the 2007 one

  • @magnasolis both r cool :)

  • @magnasolis I think both versions are equally great...Sally Hawkins was fantastic:)

  • Woah, Anne is NOT cute at all!! Though in the book she'd 'lost her bloom" I'm going to keep watching.

  • that's true!

I've never seen this version~! I'm so curious! the 2007 one is gorgeous!

  • the actors wore no makeup in keeping with book, women did not wear makeup in those days.

  • @ seattlerob7

At least "decent" girls didn't wear too much... But if you read the novel, sir Walter talks about makeup as if it's a natural thing to use for his daughters: he assumes Ann is wearing a good skin product at one point because her complexion has bettered (really from her happiness).

  • Elizabeth looks like the youngest sister in the movie...

  • 2:51 .........That must be Mary!

  • O good lord, I know Anne has lost her bloom in the book, but she is veeeery plain looking here...

  • Love this version. Amanda Root as Anne Elliot and Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth are marvelous! It took me the first time through to appreciate the well-written script and casting. But, it is now a favorite :)

  • I think Anne is quite nice looking myself :)

She just looks tired, like life has got her down (which, of course, it has.)

  • I love this adaptation and i love the book, fantastic story (I even prefer this novel to pride and prejudice - which is another great book with the 1995 adaptation being among the best) i saw amanda root - anne- in tesco in teddington a few years ago but managed to restrain myself from bellowing out that i love her in this film lol!

  • One of my favorites!!!! J'adore this movie!!!

  • They should be ashamed of themselves for the way they treat poor Anne!!

I remember watching this years ago & I'm so glad it's on here to watch again! Thank you :)

  • This is one of my all time favorite films. Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root are perfect. I never tire of watching it on my snuggle down days.

  • I seem to remember a different version on Youtube (not the 2007 film) with a prettier version of Anne and Elizabeth.....

  • This movie is becoming one of my all time favorites. The british are brillant when it comes to adaptions from novels

(90%) of the time. not trying to offended anyone with that. sorry if i do. This is jsut pretty faithful to the book and It's one of my favorite novels of all time. rare to love a movie and the book!!! thanks for posting!!!

  • I love the opening sequence. The music really suits both the family and the naval people.

And can that girl in the blue dress be any more of a manly slob? aha

  • Wonderful characterizations of all the roles in this movie. Elizabeth is rude to Anne, her father is a shallow cockscomb of a man who looks down on everyone but lives beyond his means; and Anne is the dutiful daughter to her family . I loved the novel when I read it and this adaptation is very faithful. Thanks for posting.

  • The 1995 version is the BEST. Amanda Root is wonderful, although they could have gotten a prettier actress to play Elizabeth Elliott --- to better parallel the book. The 2007 version was (in my opinion) terrible, no where near the novel, the acting was forced and appalling and the actors ill-cast.

  • This adaptation does healthy justice to Austen's novel. I wish I had come across this version before the '07 one. Ciaran holds commanding presence, doesn't he?

  • Oh, I love Persuasion and like so many of you I prefer this version too!

  • Ciaran Hinds really gave this adaption the justice it deserved, he was the one who made this my most loved version, i got bored very quickly in the other adaptions and this one i have continued to come back to time and time again.

  • i like this version of Persuasion than the other one as well. The 2007 adaptaion is bland, you hardly feel the emotion and spark between anne and capt. wentworth

  • this version rules. The Anne in this one is so REAL.... 2007 version is lame, the Anne ugly, the Captain a kid ....

  • I admit I like this version alot better than aonther one I saw. Don't know the other actress in it; but someone surely needed to teach her how to do a kissing scene. This is by far the better of the two I've seen (though I did like the endinf of the other better)

  • Seems like this version is everyone's favorite. I liked it so much i own the DVD.

It is such a beautiful story - different from most of Austen's Cinderella stories. I love the theme of a love lost but found again.

I like the Lady Russell character the way it is acted. Clothes and scenery just perfect.

  • By far the best version. Much more realistic then 2007 and the acting is far superior.
