sometimes i hear the music of my youth and it fails live up to my memories of that time...big country actually sounds better and more incredible now that they ever did-- my perception has only grown clearer with more life experience, both good and sad...this music transcends its own time, and stuart's lyrics written in his youth are both profound and sad, applicable to all ages
Had the good fortune of seeing Big Country live in the 90's with Stuart. I saw them again earlier this year with Mike singing lead vocals. I had a nasty feeling it would be some crap "tribute" band but I was blown away. It was really emotional seeing somebody singing in Stuart's place but I have to say that Mike is clearly the worlds biggest Stuart fan. He tells some really personal stories of how the band and Stuart have affected him, it's amazing. It's clear that Mike does this as a tribute.
Mike does not suck. He is not, and never will be, Stu...but what he has done is bring the band back into the 21st century. I saw them at Oxford on 10th April. They were superb, and Mikes tribute to Stu was heartfelt and emotional.
This is probably my favourite BC song and they do all of them justice on the current tour. If you get a chance, go and see them...brilliant night!!
@bibleinabullet , you tit, Mikes brought the band back into the millenium, Ive seen the guys this year in Jan and it was an excellent gig, I respect Stewart, he was and is awesome, however theres a chance to bring the band back to life , I want that , anyways, respect your thoughts as a fellow fan , cheers bud .

whenever this was, and obviously it's later bc, they broke out the classic rendition and just killed it. glad to see them having fun and more than that - they were feeling it and so was the crowd. i am a little bit heartbroken it's over (even so many years gone)
I love the contrast between this and other earlier concert footage of the same song. All are excellent. This band's best stands up to almost any other artists.
I had the fortune to see this band live in Columbus, OH in 1983. I even sat and had an hamburger with these guys and Elvis Brothers who were the opening act. Maybe not the best concert I've seen, but I've never been happier after one. The joy they showed on stage made me so happy. RIP, Stu!
Great song, a band that has and still will stand against time! Regret not being able to see them live in the states. I could only imagine the good times!!! RIP Stu
I saw them 4 times in the eighties, I also got to meet them in a bar after a show at Hammersmith, only for 10 minutes or so but what a privelige, all lovely people.
I saw them twice in Ireland, once in Tralee's Horan Centre in the late 80's and again years later in Dublin's Olympia as part of their final fling tour. We were almost tempted to fly on to Belfast of Glasgow to see them again as we all knew it was the end. Was genuinely numbed when I learned if SA's death. But the memory lives on and it is strong. Long may it continue. Go raibh mile maith agat a Stuart, maith an buachaill!!!!
Wish Stu was still around and kicking..he'd only be a young 52! Wish they were able to play the ScotFest in Estes Park! RIP...always my favorite band.
Once I bought that "The Crossing" cassette tape and listened to it all the way through, this became my instant favourite BC song. Lovely! Love the interplay of instruments. The lyrics are awesome!
I can still cry looking at Stuart. Such a waste.. I remember him sharing the water from his bottle with me after a concert, such a sweet, sweet man. Underestimated, undervalued, but not by his fans!
The pain will never go away for your family Stuart, RIP big man, you are still missed with everyone that met and new you.Sadly missed big fella"Why did you have to do this" 8 years on.
Man this band was good. Can't get any better than these guys. Love BC, and this is the first musician I think I've really missed. Man I miss this guy's music.
This is the third version of this song I have watched today and I noticed a couple of things. First, this version is much more uptempo than was done back at the Barras and other times in the 80s and, as such, the song is about a minute shorter. Second, Stu didn't use an e-bow but used some other effect on his guitar to mimic the sound. Back in the day, this song seemed more theatrical and anthemic live, but as the band developed more of a back-catalog, it became somewhat less of a showpiece.
Stuart's voice did get richer. Maybe the result of all the different styles of music he immersed himself in. As for the smoking, he has a fag in his hand on the front 'Driving To Damascus'
i noticed that stuarts voice gets richer in the later years, and i know that he smoked a little in the 80's. Do you guys think it maybe cuz he stopped smoking? cuz i remember seeing a documentary about BC and stuart had a ciggarette
Brilliant - thanks for posting. happy memories from a lifetime ago come flooding back. Must dig out all the records as had forgotten this track by name. Ashamed to say its been too long. Thanks.
seen these guys live so many times & this track is the best live...met stuart & the guys at the lemon tree gig in aberdeen really down to earth guys no show biz up there own arse....3 months later Aberdeen fc played dunfermilne in a play off for premier survival walked into a pub and stuart owned it remembered me sat down had a dram & a good yarn miss you mate
GOD!!! They were so under rated!! It's incredible!! One of the BEST live acts ever!! Love BC!! 80's had the BEST talent of any decade!! Bar none!! RIP Stuart! Missed but never forgotten!!
Saw them in NY back in the day. We were one of the few people in the city who knew who were the Skids, and had advance copies of the first BC singles. We viewed The Crossing as a bit of a betrayal from Adamson's punk roots, but I find myself playing the album every so often 25 years later.
I always dreamed of directing a film that Adamson scored. Or at least attending such a film. Sorry never to get the chance.
I went to HMV to buy 'Highway to Hell' but came away with 'The Crossing' instead. After 1 play I was totally addicted and obsessed. The best album ever. The best live band ever.
Missed this one. Check my many many other comments on other BC videos. Can't say enough about this group. Incendiary and spiritual. Anybody that hasn't heard them is missing out. My 10 year old son loves them.
I saw BC twice in Brighton - Crossing and Steel Town tours - Porrahman blew the roof of the place both times - truly wonderful - many thanks - God Rest SA
This was on youtube once before if I recollect. What a beautiful song, my favorite. A shame this is only seen by a few BC hardcore fans while American Idol is watched by millions of idiots.
I watched Stuart and BC at the Barrowlands on the Seer tour they did. Its music that has never ever left me, and will never do so. RIP Stuart, you were a shining star and left us too soon.
Upploaded for one week and still no comment and still only 75 views. Hopefully all those great live performances uploaded on Youtube will open the ears to a new generation of young Big Country fans.
What can I say that hasn't been said. The musicianship among all four men on stage is so beautiful. Ethereal. It'a an out-of-body experience listening to notes so clean and powerful. And this is before Stuart's voice kicks in. Mesmerizing.
Isn't it ironic that the lyrics to this song end in. .
. ."Save us from all love and hope Give us iron. . give us rope. "
Most under-rated live band ever! Those who know, KNOW! Everyone else needs to LEARN, RECOGNIZE, and ACKNOWLEDGE!!!!
