  • The face may look different, the hair has matured, but the right hand is unmistakable. Yes sir, as I have always said, You Are a Genius! Absolutely Beautiful. What an amazing horn! And you say the frets are movable! Simply astounding! Thanks for all your beautiful music. Raggy

  • oh man! this sounds amazing. great job man! You've inspired me to save up so I can buy a lute and learn to play! Can't believe I've never listened to one before. *goes off on a lute youtube adventure.*

  • @PyroSmelnyk

    Thnaks a lot !

I hope you will enjoy playing it as I do... Good luck !

    Val

  • Thank for for posting this lovely piece and Val plays is beautifully. This is the sound of history and shows the lute off as it really was. Baz

  • @trevorpope1913

No one is sure what lute sounds like really... I just play the way I like it, but some would say it may be like this or like that... who knows...

    Thank you very much.

    V.

  • @Luthval What are your frets made of? I heard some are made of string, and can be moved!

  • @pikulicluka

The frets are made of gut and are movable.

    Val

  • 0 dislikes. Just the way I like it.

  • @beezerboy94

Is it really important ? only 68 likes on 10 000 view ? so what ? What is important is music...

    Thanks

    Val

  • @Luthval implying my verbal appreciation of the lack of dislikes shows that it is what I most value.

  • @beezerboy94

Yes I do understand, and thank you for your message. Just want to say I dont give too much importance to like-dislike business ;-)))

  • :)

  • @wlchambers

    ;-)))

  • Very nice.

  • @captainbadd

    Thanks ;-)

  • Hi I'm a jazz guitarist and clarinetist, but my background in theory is purely classical. Degrees in harmony, counterpoint and fugue. I love the baroque but I was reluctant in buying a lute although I think I'd adapt fast, because I play fingerstyle guitar too. In Greece we have a 4 course folk lute variation (thin and long neck) which I play with a pick. I'm a professional musician. Do you think I could start with a 250GBP 8 course lute off ebay? Is it good for the normal baroque repertoire?

  • @douskara

The eight course is for renaissance music (like the one I'm playing on this video) from 1500 to 1600 -more or less). Then baroque lute has 11 or 13 courses and a different tuning.

Cheap 8 courses lute on e-bay are made in Pakistan, and need to be fixed to be playable (new nut, frets, pegs and strings) and they are cheap... that mean not instrument a professional would like to play on... But just for fun and for a try why not. But think to buy a real one soon... Good luck !

  • What does it take to play like that?

  • @EllyMcCormack

It takes some work, minimum 1 hour a day, during some time I played 2 /3 hours/day, when preparing my exams. I start playing guitar in '67, lute in '80...

  • Wow... So that's what a lute sounds like... It's so beautiful!

I have a new appreciation for Renaissance music. I could listen to this all day.

  • @MagicansForce

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • I have a score for classical guitar. I hope it's well transcribed. Can't wait to play some Dowland.

  • Superbe ! Merci pour cette interprétation magistrale.

  • Merci beaucoup ;-)

    Val

  • i can imagine an elizabethan rogue at the window of a fair lady professing his love for her only to be told to 'go from my window'

  • This is what is nice with renaissance music, you can dream your stories ;-)

    Val

  • fantastic !!!!!!!

excuse me luthval can you tell me how do you tune a 8 courses lute????????

  • This one is tune (from bass to treble)

    DFGCFADG.

    Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • Sometimes you can use C for the last bass (for late renaissance music as Vallet or Ballart, or some scottish music. I don't do it very often !

  • I try it on guitar but the lute, ah, the lute. Beautiful.

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    Val

  • hver do you buy your luth?

  • Look my channel you have links to the luthiers..;

    V.

  • This music is golden, simply gorgeous!

    --Bette

  • Belle pièce, j'aimerais pouvoir en faire autant avec mon luth :P

  • Il y a plusieurs versions de cette pièce, certaines plus abordables, pour commencer, avant de jouer celle ci avec les diminutions et ornementations. ;-)

Bon courage et bon luth !

    Amicalement,

    Valéry

  • I teach English in an East Los Angeles High School. About to assign Romeo & Juliet. Forgive me for my dumb question, but is this the music that one would have heard at the Globe circa 1598?

  • Yes it is, I play Elizabethan period lute music (Dowland, Holborne, Cutting, Robinson, and many anonymous composers) all music between 1580 and 1620.

So Shakespeare could have heard this.

    ;-)

    Val

  • I'm going to buy an eight-course lute because I wanted something with more strings than my classical guitar, and also wanted a different sounding instrument. Do you know where I can find tablature for the eight-course lute and what lute are you playing, because I have come across the problem of many lutes with different tunings they can reach. like some lutes capable of D tuning and some capable of G tuning.

  • Dm tuning is baroque lute (11 to 13 courses), G tuning is most common renaissance lute (6 to 10 courses) So 8 course will be renaissance lute in G tuning (even you can have some one tone higher or lower but g is most usual)

    Val.

  • Thank you for sharing this music , it's enchanting listening to you ...

  • Thanks a lot ;-)

    V.

  • Excellent playing, and it is such an amazing song.

  • I'm so glad I discovered your channel, luthval. I've forgotten my cares for the past hour.

  • Thanks a lot.

    I'm glad you appreciate.

    Val

  • I never did understand why the lute fell out of favor for guitar. The lute is such a rich and wonderful sounding instrument. Don't get me wroung, I also love the guitar, and it has its' merrits and is also a wonderful instument. I am glad to see there are enthusiasts that play the lute today.

  • I think the same as you, loving lute music and instrument for the special sound and atmosphere, and also a great fan of guitar-s (many guitars and many styles)

    Best regards

    Val ;-)

  • The sound you get from the lute is wonderful! I come to you channel often, when I need something to get inspired by. Thanks!

  • As always a pleasure to listen to you!

    Thanks a lot!

    Kind regards,

  • This is still my favourite lute piece! With this good sound, i can hear the diffrence between this on lute and guitar ;>.

    Mant thanks, Sweden

  • Bonjour Valery,

Cette musique est tellement belle qu'elle en est envoutante. L'effet est amplifié par le son majestueux du luth que tu utilises.

    Amitiés

    Patrice

  • Val,

How many times; how many ways can I say your performances are magnificent. Since I don't like being redundant, I won't post as often as I have in the past, but rest assured I will watch and listen to each video you produce. Thanks again for the peace and joy you bring to all who view your exceptional musical productions.

  • My sentiments exactly! Val is wonderful!

  • Aaahh a second version! Very nice again Val. Great sound.

    Best,

    Jolina

  • I love this piece. You play it so elegantly. Just beautiful.

  • I heard this song on a cd of early lute music, and it is so fantastic to see it being played. You are a master.

  • I love it.

  • very nice piece! is this version original? or you added some variations on it?

    thanks

  • It is the version of the Folger lute book, I did not change or add any note. I like also the version by Pilkington, and the one by Robinson too...

    ;-)

    Val

  • Ohh I love this one! Thank you Val!!

  • Thanks you for listening ;-)

  • Very nice Luthval, it's refreshing to hear this piece played in your style

    Regards

    MIL

  • what strings do you use? are there actually lute strings on sale? do you use homemade strings or other string instrument's string?

  • There are strings for lute on the market : Savarez, Aquila, Kurschner, Pyramid. (I'm using KF strings by Savarez and for the basses Kurschner)

Using a search engine with "lute society" as keywords and you'll have some adresses. Good luck !

    Val ;-)

  • Was registered on march, 4, 1588. Appears in more than a dozen lute sources , among the earliest being Folger Library MS v.b.280 (ca. 1590) used by the GREAT Valéry.

"Go from my window love, go, Go from my window my dear. The wind and the rain will drive you back again . You cannot be lodged here. Begone my juggy, my puggy, Begone, my love, my dear. The weather is warm, 't will do thee no harm ; Thou can'st not be lodged here. "

Better than ever, congratulations Mr Val !
