omg!! the moment i saw the first tetrahedron it reminded me of the carbon atoms in diamond. and then he goes on to show methane (CH4) with marbles. this just made me so happy. i know my comment doesnt make sense or add anything new, but it just made me happy. i have lost contact with chemistry for 8 years now (i am a comp-sci/electronics major phd student). but this kind of reminded me my high-school days. i just had to post this!!
You don't need a 3 billion dollar hadron collider....correction....we shouldn't need money. Think about it, do you innately help and learn for the need of money?
I cant figure out what paper toy that was, the one that folds back onto it self. i have serached "aurtur stone" but can not find it. all i find is the "flexagon" plates, but those are npt the same as what was being demonstrated in this video. please, help me find that paper toy :)
@N3CR1S I suppose structurally it would have to be a torus, maby by adding that keyword you'll broaden your search. Sorry I cant help you further =). You could go to ted dot com and go to peakers/arvind_gupta.html to see if he explains the toy.
my daughter is 7 months old now & after seeing Arvind here, I'm looking forward to become a creative & smart father for her. thx a lot for sharing your 30yrs of experiences Mr. Gupta.
Great Presentation! This is soo much cooler then these high tech toys that we give our children that inhibit social interaction! Great Job Arvind Gupta!!
A little hard to understand at times - and a bit rushed, but WOW! I loved it!! I want to know more... !!! My favorite was the thin bicycle tubing and toothpicks for teaching geometry.

Brilliant! ...now there is potential for World Peace game!!!! ...totally outside of military toys and war strategy
I'm curious about how a world peace game would look if Arvind Gupta and John Hunter partnered in designing the game that John presented some days ago.
I'm curious to know if any of theTEDtalk speakers listen to each other ...if they are inspired by each other to join efforts in peaceful collaborations of educating
in sharing peaceful opportunites for children to explore
This video is truly inspiring; innovations of learning that not only fit the 21st century, but also are available in the poorest of countries. There's a huge mental power waiting to be awakened in countries like India.
Recalled to mind my childhood days. Happy and content with toys like these. Now with the influx of electronic toys, the current generation seems to have forgotten what joy these tiny little toys can give. Nice video. Thanks.
That may be true for some kids, but not all. My nephew is 10, and has a playstation 3 and xbox 360, and his favourite toy is a marble run he made for a school project (put a marble in and it goes through a maze basically). On top of which he's into lego, slot cars, electic sets (lights, switches, buzzers etc) and painting. Sure he doesn't play with nuts on a hoop, but he's not "glued" to the TV either.
@claudees The toys today are mere improved versions of the toys of the generations before. We are to respect the past but always look towards the future. This principle is often missed by both young and older generations.
People with less are so much more creative with what they have. This is an amazing story of bringing joy through learning, with less. These types of positive talks with a simple but noble message are why I watch TED. Thanks!
my friend if the 98% of this world population wasn't working/dedicating their time to the rich money hungry corporate empires in this world then we would have Billions of Arvind Gupta type of people on this planet. In fact our life on this planet would have changed real fast. There are people out there as brilliant as Arvind Gupta who never had the chance to spread their creativity/knowledge to the world population. Now that we have internet it will be possible in the future.
@pwnmonkeyisreal in your house ...in parks everywhere ...the materials are everyday materials ...items that we buy then ulimately throw out as garbage
That was a truly inspiring talk. So many great ideas for teaching kids about so many different scientific principles whilst having real fun MAKING things.
8:30 - Present this device in a crowded town square in the year zero and everyone will swear it's spirits making the propeller twirl. It's for exactly that reason I have no time for the other ridiculous metaphysical claims emanating from that time.
@Saesegral i haven't seen any dislikes so far.... but yes your right, this is valuable, and the man has a really really good mind, humans should learn how to improvise, that's other people is lacking of.
Fantastic, I remember when I was a child my grandma would make that same ship out of newspaper pages and I would fill the bath tub with water and put my toy cars and coins in and it would float. I am going to make that straw toy that made sounds when you snip at it
