  • I love this man's enthusiasm!!! That straw thing is THE best things I have seen in months!

  • 11 people have not experienced the happiness of having a toy to play with

  • this guy is totally devoted i knw because i have seen him doing shows on dooordarshan(''TAranG'') since my childhood n i am now 22 years old..

  • @nitingarg88 yup! i miss those days, doordarshan was having epic shows .alas!! cable and glamour media ruptured everything..

  • 11:34 almost brought tears to my eyes!

  • @djzah same for me

  • You don't need a 3 billion dollar hadron collider....correction....we shouldn't need money. Think about it, do you innately help and learn for the need of money?

  • Best TEDtalk ever.

Seriously, I've been wondering over a year now what to do with my life. Making kids smile and learn = indescribably epic win.

  • This is inspiring. We seem to have forgotten so much of these old toys. I may have found a new hobby... hmm

  • Love him! :D

  • I cant figure out what paper toy that was, the one that folds back onto it self. i have serached "aurtur stone" but can not find it. all i find is the "flexagon" plates, but those are npt the same as what was being demonstrated in this video. please, help me find that paper toy :)

  • @N3CR1S I suppose structurally it would have to be a torus, maby by adding that keyword you'll broaden your search. Sorry I cant help you further =). You could go to ted dot com and go to peakers/arvind_gupta.html to see if he explains the toy.

  • There's something spiritually rewarding in the realization that so much can be done with so little! I could watch these toys and tricks for hours!

  • my daughter is 7 months old now & after seeing Arvind here, I'm looking forward to become a creative & smart father for her. thx a lot for sharing your 30yrs of experiences Mr. Gupta.

  • @kirank Give em legos and watch magic.

  • So glad I watched this one!

  • HOLY CRAP @ the guys eyebrows at 15:22

  • Great Presentation! This is soo much cooler then these high tech toys that we give our children that inhibit social interaction! Great Job Arvind Gupta!!

  • what kind of douchebags dislike a video like this?

  • I'm a Caucasian from southern California with Engilish as my only language, and I could understand his English just fine. What a cool guy. =o)

  • he's so passionate :)

  • Thanks for sharing it! That was very inspiring!

  • A little hard to understand at times - and a bit rushed, but WOW! I loved it!! I want to know more... !!! My favorite was the thin bicycle tubing and toothpicks for teaching geometry.

  • A little hard to understand at times - and a bit rushed, but WOW! I loved it!! I want to know more... !!! My favorite was the thin bicycle tubing and toothpicks for teaching geometry.

  • Indian Santa

  • a bit difficult to understand sometimes but never the less all thumbs up! really creative and passionate!

  • Oh my God, I have a lot of familiarity with the Indian accent, but this gentleman is TOUGH to understand!

    Hats off otherwise.

  • Do you know where to find the materials for the paper work at 6:30

  • why spend hundreds for hotwheels when you can make your own toy car using a 5 cent motor!

  • indian version of Professor Julius Sumner-Miller? .... curiosity show? good stuff

  • Hats off for this genius guy, great spirit.

  • Oh man, my head hurts.

  • This IDEA Shud Be Really Impllemented in Schools Of India And ABROAD..... God Bless Evryone

  • wow

  • The velcro touchpad is freakin awesome

  • This is BEAUTIFUL! I love the enthusiasm and heart that this man has, let him be a role model for all teachers!

    Bless him! :D

  • Brilliant! ...now there is potential for World Peace game!!!! ...totally outside of military toys and war strategy

I'm curious about how a world peace game would look if Arvind Gupta and John Hunter partnered in designing the game that John presented some days ago.

I'm curious to know if any of theTEDtalk speakers listen to each other ...if they are inspired by each other to join efforts in peaceful collaborations of educating

in sharing peaceful opportunites for children to explore

    respect

  • amazing!

fantastic idea comes from pure soul

  • Nice thoughts. Keep up your good work. best wishes.

  • Seeing the guy on the big screen silmuntaneously makes me dizzy.

  • @sebastianbrosche me too!

  • this video must be shared with all govt school teachers.

  • @dittuss ...all school teachers including John Hunter

  • those are awesome for chemistry, geometry, physics... study

great for developing creativity, logic, mechanics...

  • I'm only one minute in but that background is already giving me a headache.

  • go to 00:15 to avoid annoying jet sound

  • This video is truly inspiring; innovations of learning that not only fit the 21st century, but also are available in the poorest of countries. There's a huge mental power waiting to be awakened in countries like India.

  • OMG I learned more in this video than I learned in 12 years of public education...

  • Yes, this is the way to teach Science to Kids, no need for expensive computers :)

  • really enjoyd this one.

  • =D

But why does the groovy pencil work?

  • Hahah that was a really fun talk :D

    He's so...wow! Just..Amazing.

  • The toys seem like a lot of fun,

  • 11:30 Wow!

  • Recalled to mind my childhood days. Happy and content with toys like these. Now with the influx of electronic toys, the current generation seems to have forgotten what joy these tiny little toys can give. Nice video. Thanks.

  • @claudees True that!!

  • @claudees

That may be true for some kids, but not all. My nephew is 10, and has a playstation 3 and xbox 360, and his favourite toy is a marble run he made for a school project (put a marble in and it goes through a maze basically). On top of which he's into lego, slot cars, electic sets (lights, switches, buzzers etc) and painting. Sure he doesn't play with nuts on a hoop, but he's not "glued" to the TV either.

  • @claudees The toys today are mere improved versions of the toys of the generations before. We are to respect the past but always look towards the future. This principle is often missed by both young and older generations.

  • @burneden Mortal kombat isn't.

  • 8:20

first thing to pop into my head:

    A Cross Joint :P

  • Technology. Entertainment. Design. This video is a paradigm for those three thoughts.

  • @civver3 Indeed

  • BRILLIANT Thank you.

  • Amazing

  • People with less are so much more creative with what they have. This is an amazing story of bringing joy through learning, with less. These types of positive talks with a simple but noble message are why I watch TED. Thanks!

  • @ADSwank just freaking great man!!!!!

  • @ADSwank

my friend if the 98% of this world population wasn't working/dedicating their time to the rich money hungry corporate empires in this world then we would have Billions of Arvind Gupta type of people on this planet. In fact our life on this planet would have changed real fast. There are people out there as brilliant as Arvind Gupta who never had the chance to spread their creativity/knowledge to the world population. Now that we have internet it will be possible in the future.

  • @ADSwank Ever played with a dead animal before when your bored . I have , i love you

  • Now we know why Indians are so popular!

  • OMG where can i find those toys?

  • @pwnmonkeyisreal you dont buy them, you make them for yourself.

  • @pwnmonkeyisreal in your house ...in parks everywhere ...the materials are everyday materials ...items that we buy then ulimately throw out as garbage

  • Classic.

  • Thats amazing

  • This is amazing!

  • Straordinario, geniale e estremamente umano. Grazie.

Extraordinary, genial and definitely human. Thank you.

  • I won't have time to watch this for a few hours (was just checking my emails)

but this title.. Turning trash into toys for learning

Classic TEDTalk. I'll be back to watch you, don't let me down.

  • so much fun!

  • freaking amazing

  • This was beautiful.

  • That was a truly inspiring talk. So many great ideas for teaching kids about so many different scientific principles whilst having real fun MAKING things.

  • love it , so inspiring ..

  • 8:30 - Present this device in a crowded town square in the year zero and everyone will swear it's spirits making the propeller twirl. It's for exactly that reason I have no time for the other ridiculous metaphysical claims emanating from that time.

  • osama is dead

  • Hoooooly shit, that was a quality talk.

  • Thank god, a good TEDtalks for once

  • Does he have some kind of condition? He does not sound healthy

  • poop

  • That was an inspiring talk

  • HUMAN BRAIN IS AWESOME!!!!! YET 1 DISLIKE FOR THIS VIDEO IT'S A SHAME.

  • Used to see him on Doordarshan (National TV channel) shows great guy man...

  • this was actually impresive

  • 0 dislikes now thats why im subbed to them

  • niceeee

  • If someone dislikes this video he should be punched in the face

  • How can anyone dislike something as fun and important as this?

  • @Saesegral i haven't seen any dislikes so far.... but yes your right, this is valuable, and the man has a really really good mind, humans should learn how to improvise, that's other people is lacking of.

  • @Saesegral no one did.

  • @Saesegral 5 dislikes as of may 3rd.

  • Fantastic, I remember when I was a child my grandma would make that same ship out of newspaper pages and I would fill the bath tub with water and put my toy cars and coins in and it would float. I am going to make that straw toy that made sounds when you snip at it

  • Cool guy. A little hyper, but very cool.

  • @Spencerianism He was rushing, he talks slower when he's not.

  • what a heart for children :]

  • Great talk. Innovative, constructive and green!

  • I think that toy making, specially this kind of traditional toy making, is one of the most noble things you can ever do

  • For a second i thought i could speak indian

  • Голь на выдумки хитра.

  • This was a fantastic talk :) I love this man. He seemed nervous but he is very passionate about what he does.

  • @AmusingYeti Hes is not nervous, he was on a rush because TED imposes strict time limits, and he had many things to show.

  • he is right about education in india. Even at hifi school it all comes down to mugging from "digest" and barf it out in exam. Its all about grades and degrees. You learn nothing. This was from times of British empire. The education system is still the same.It just make educated clears ( even from eng. drgree)

  • But will it blend?

  • i have honer to be in contact with man. I have his books/

  • Simple stuff, incredible :/

  • This whole presentation made me smile. I am going to try making these toys with my son.

    Thank-you

  • @lovelovinghorses google his name, he got like million free books about making things. In suggestions of this video there is channel of his toys.

  • awwww poor man ... he is so nervous :( ... but you did a great job man :)

  • hmmm? why highest rated comments are about boobies?

  • Oh waw the wool pen was really something!

  • These toys show some of the most powerful and fundamental forces known to science. If a child is introduced to these concepts early and in a hands on way, they will have a head start on figuring it all out when they grow up and be much more curious and informed about the world based upon sound principles.

  • @ddnguyen278 100%

That basic idea is why I like the zeitgeist movement. The children aren't the problem. The life they're forced into is. Scientific understanding is humanity's last great hope.

  • @Icemario87

It's also the first real hope.

  • @khatack Good point.

  • this guy is amazing.

  • kids need toys, good talk

  • he has a thick accent but he has valuable information worth listening to.

  • Wow, that was great :)

  • love all the videos, but please go HD.... please!!!!

  • Absolutely brilliant!

  • I always know I have a great ted-talk ahead of me when the top rated comment says "boobies". That is a true sign of quality.

  • @Gustenitranemo

    watch?v=DqbM1ZrpTQg

    ;-)

  • What a good man!!!
