can't wait till you guys switch out of that ACU shit....you light up in environment like a Christmas tree shouting "HERE I AM SHOOT ME!!!"....you guys will be in multi-cam soon....every one of you. :p
@GrenMoyo Haha, but we blend in SO WELL with boulders and rocks. (And some couches if you've seen the pic o.O) Multicam is a whole lot better, I can't wait for the states to transition on over.
@voxtelnismo Exactly right? To me, CIRAS is more modular with the molle space it has. But the IOTV would definatley protect you more from shrapnel or fragmentation from explosives. :D
@dadiddlydooda This is true, so you should probably refrain from pulling on that lever when there's concrete under you lol. It's all good though, I dropped my IBA on the ground plenty of times and the plates never cracked.
@NaxTactical The "chicken wings" are the pads that go between your shoulders and the outer shell of the IOTV. I know this "defeats dropping the vest quickly" but there are two scenarios where you're going to do that: if you have EOD ordinance in your plates, or you've got something like a sucking chest wound. Either way, someone's cutting your vest off of you. Trust me, it makes QRF donning and doffing a LOT smoother.
i hate this vest i deployed with it and it is BULKY!!!!!!! i rather have plate carriers but some people are more concerned about shrapnel than comfort and speed JUST ISSUE US THE DAMN DRAGON SKIN BODY ARMOR!!!!!
If you consider the IOTV bulky, and would rather have comfort/speed, then I assure you they won't be issuing Dragon Skin anytime soon. The average body armor weighs 20 to 30 pounds, whereas the Dragon Skin typically weighs 40 to 50 pounds .
@tubedude1438 Dragon Skin has been cited and scientifically proven, both in formal tests and examinations, to spread the impact of a bullet more effectively than IOTV. Anything else to add, moron?
@Elena9535 yeah actually it hasn't been tested for a 7.62x51 and either way it's soft armor you would feel like you got hit with a sledge hammer. spreading the impact more effectively just means that the person being hit has to absorb more.
@Elena9535 Especially when you consider actual peer reviewed research papers like the one by J. Robbins et al which label imperfect interface (such as that provided by Dragon Skin's segregated tiles) as the dominating factor in deterioration of load spreading in layered armor systems. Feel free to look it up in the International Journal of Impact Engineering 30 (2004) 593-615.
@marcusos1111 depends how ya look at it. the makers of dragon skin made fulse reports and fulsely marked there dragon skin armour befor any lagit testing was done on it so i think that is saying somethings not too right with the company that made it and the armour its self prob isnt worth all the "wow". the IOTV is a great vest and the army have many resurchers finding new ways to make body armour so im sure the army has the best armour
@marcusos1111 well sure the gorvenrmant want money but the fact with the armour is the makers of dragon skin lied to the US army/marine core and airforce saying it was NIJ aproved when it wasnt and saying it can stop all these round when it wasnt even tested properly. if i was in charge of getting armor for the troops i wouldnt trust a company that lied to the government. so yes the makers of dragon skin only cared about the money after all it is stupidly over priced. like $7000USD
@Breakneckhydra1 Everyone says Dragon Skin is the best. Can you tell me which is the best armour? Who has the best armour? The US, Canadians, Brits, French, Germans, Aussies, etc?
@Mojo1982 All those country's are part of NATO, all NATO use the same plates in the armor. They all may have different vests, but the plates inside are all the same. NATO uses different plates then Warsaw pact country's tho like china, russia, and so on tho.
The MTV is heavier though. Plus it was made before the IOTV. So it isn't based off of the IOTV and isn't cut down to what was needed. If it was it wouldn't be about 6 pounds heavier. Going by the pics I've seen the MTV looks bulkier.
I used this system in Iraq and it flippin' rocked!!! It's lighter, has 100% more mobility, and offers more coverage. I don't know what Y'all are thinkin' though because it's easy to get on and off. I mounted my gear directly to the vest via MOLLE attachements and it worked just fine it's definately not a two person job just takes practice. Anyone who has used an IBA knows it's a pain in your Six. The IOTV was the best thing to come along since sliced bread!!!
Well, by now I am sure you have deployed and realized that the IOTV is a piece of shit body armor. Yes it offers protection, but its HEAVIER, it is harder to put on (Solo) let alone a battle buddy helping. We need something better! Hell the IBA was even better than the IOTV. I think we need the Dragon skin. Especially for Afghanistan. I would rather wear nothing at all than this IOTV. I am around Mosul now, walking the whadis and mountains, and this IOTV SUCKS my ass!
I just got mine today, we deploy in august and well. . . it felt much lighter. we got a range next week so i get to spend a few hours in the thing and see how I feel then. Hey, good luck out there. Be safe
Well this dumbass is unfortunately in the same division as I and we undoubtable deployed the same time. I wore the IOTV for 14 months in Iraq, on a line unit running patrols every day and it was freakin awesome compared to the IBA. It is in fact lighter, and I wear an XL, it fits 10x better, feels better, and its cooler. Its not nearly as hard to put on by yourself, I did it everyday by myself and it takes about 5-10 seconds to do. These guys are just retarded.
i agree, its difficult to get on by yourself, but the IOTV actually shaved 3 1/4 pounds off of the IBA, and i would rather be protected than shot, wouldn't you?
Check it out dick wad. You need to learn who the fuck you are talking to. I would gladly rip your fucking eyes out and piss on your brain. You dont fucking know me, and I dont give a fuck if your dad makes rubber cocks. The fact is, this IOTV rides the hips, It is not lighter, it does not feel better on the shoulders. Your dad is soon to be out of a job. Stupid fucking Kid, your dad ought to kick the shit out of you for disrespecting soldiers! Better get your game tight little kiddy fuck!
So glad I bought my own plate carrier instead of wearing my IOTV. Much more comfortable for long patrols and is about 1,000x easier to don/doff. Plus dickheads don't come around and pull my tab everytime I put it together. haha
Phenix Gear Operator. Nice plate carrier...check one out if you can. You're 3rd ID...if you're at Stewart they should have it at Ranger Joe's.
I just got issued mine today. I can say that I enjoy it more than the previous IBA and I like that the vest no longer opens in the front (and removing those stupid snaps, which break). It's alot more comfortable around the neck and is definitely a big improvement.
The new IOTV is way more mobile, comfortable, protective (with the side-plates) and it even has a quick release option that the old IBA does not. Now we need better ACH's..
..ok this dude's an idiot. I don't know about other places, but in my unit (10th Mountain Div) you get a feild grade Article 15 for pulling the quick release (if the plate cracks). The fact that the plates are practically glass is what gets me.. why the fuck would he do that? IOTV's are good when you get hit by an AP round and absolutely have to take the vest off. I find it very effecient in a firefight if shot, or at other times when taking the vest off is necessary.
We got ours a few months ago and I do like the fact that it isn't as bulky as the IBA with side plates, but the quick release is retarded and I don't see why I'll ever need to use it. I can get out of and old IBA just as quickly without spending 15 minutes putting it back together.
Yeah I just got mine the only thing i don't like it the lack of MOLLE webbing. Other then that it's a good vest, and yeah some ppl might need help getting it on but wtf when do you put the crap on? Yeah B4 you even leave the wire, so what's so bad about ur buddy helping you put it on and you doing the same for him? I mean if it means you have more protection and it's way more comfy.
Can civilians buy this? I've been looking desparatly for this vest and still I can't find it..Any info on where to purchase would be a big help!! Even without the plates...perferablly without plates lol
the whole point of the new iotv is that if a medic needs to give aid to a wounded soldier, he pulls the quick release, supposedly, tehre are a lot of reports that soldiers died from medics struggling to get off the older vests. ther problem with the new one is just as usarmy guy said: there is barely any molle loops on the new vest. its also cumbersome as it takes two people to put on
it does NOT take 2 people to put it on. I've NEVER had help putting mine on. And the quick release is NOT for medics. The medics have an access point at the shoulder. So please research something before you start saying what you THINK is the truth and say what actually is the truth.
im a medic and i had no problem with the quick release or the side release on the shoulder. also it doesn't take two people to put on or take off. and that guy is an idiot for letting those ceramic plates hit the floor like that.
dude if anything this gives it more MOLLE webbing I mean there's no fold going down the middle so when you put your pouches on you don't have to worry about them going over and locking your vest shut
I love this bad boy, it's so much more comfortable and it's just smarter than the old IBA...

looks nice but after watching the vid and seeing it up close I've noticed a few discuraging thinga that'll have me keeping my regular OTV.
1. It is WAY to hard to put on by yourself. I can get my OTV on in less then 10secs, BY MYSELF.
2. the amount of places to mount molle gear seam to be severly reduced, especially in the front were 90% of a soldiers gear is placed.
3. The quick release, but it takes to long to put back together and far to easy for someone to come up and just pull the cord.
UsArmyGuy8782 4 years ago
