All nations have there own foods anyways, but because many Italians live in USA their food is popular - that's the only difference. And many countries help NATO not just Italy.. Italy's empire was small compared to other European colonial empires and they weren't great in the WWs either. This is what history says.

If we are talking about ITALY there is not much compared to Portugal, Spain, etc

Actually it is correct to state that Italy was kept divided purposely. One of the primary reasons in which France refused to withdraw from Rome until 1870 was because Napoleon III feared the rise of a strong Italian state with nationalist ambitions on its southern border. The UK also was responsible for fermenting rebellions across Italy, playing off city-states against the French. It's not a coincidence that Italy was disunited for so long. Foreign powers made sure of that.

Italy in WW2 fought with Germans against Britain, United States, Russia and minimally against Australia and Canada so it was not just a clash on a par ...

Every nation has their own foods and they are all very different and nice, Italian food is considered great because of Italy itself. Many people travel there and enjoy the food, not to say they wouldn't have enjoyed Slovakian food but nobody goes there (generally) and there are many Italians in places like USA so their food is seen a lot.
