  • @Ironhorse7874 drunk again i've been drinking gordons gin. love his voice and harp.

  • @animascat I know where you're at, Ironhorse7874.

It's all Butterfield's fault, of course. Bloody wonderful man.

  • I couldn't stop moving listening this..yeah it's Blues...woow

  • Menudo temazo, buf.

  • Nice to enjoy watching him live once again on U-tube,He and his music will live forever. Best show I'd seen him at was a SummerThing concert on Boston Common during summer of 70 or 71. Butterfield played 1st with his Band ,then BB King was 2nd act that night. After BBs set for an encore, he came back out and jammed with Paul for about 20 min. or more . The licks they traded back and forth between them , you thought you'd died and gone to Blues heaven!!! RIP Sir,

  • That is SAD "DRUNK AGAIN" fmzkuester. You play that good and get back to me

  • Didn't he do the song Im Drunk Again I would like to hear that one again.

  • He is in this sing with SRV & Albert and maybe BB I forget(high), but he is screamin his lungs out and that shit is some baaaad ass blues man let me tell you!!

  • @o56kid Yes! I know what you're talking about. It was a BB King and friends special on HBO. Probably like 1986ish? It was BB Albert Stevie Phil Collins on drums, even Billy ocean, lol. The girls were Etta James, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan. Truly a special night of music, just before Paul passed.

  • What a great guitar solo!!!

    melted my face..

  • 4 ppl doesnt know what music is !

  • I love this understated Butterfield song. Thanks for posting. Just covered it myself recently. ♫G®€Ÿ ØWℓ♫

  • this video so puts me in the groove as it did the first time i saw it..... many thanks

  • It's a D harp. 2nd position. Basically 3 notes : 4d (or 4d bend) - 4b - 3d bend

3 draw bent = blue third or flatted 3rd.

  • There´s so much great music on YT. I find myself returning to this little gem, though. Truly remarkable. This is soo funky...and sad in a optimistic way. Intense. THIS is blues of the highest carat. Paul is missed so very much. Here is a man who´s been through it all and not afraid to tell us about it. This piece is "just" music..but holds a world of wisdom. And the bass player? Please LISTEN to the solo... Open up your mind - the solo is fun, cheeky and very, very melodic at the end. Funky.

  • @swedharp: I would say: G-harp in third position

  • a wonderful harp player who wasn't obsessed with gear: Just played his harp through a shure 57 and the house PA. And did it better than anyone.

  • god bles the man

  • It is so sad to see Paul so unwell,RIP Paul Butterfield - A man Playing the Blues from the Heart !!

  • Recorded by IPTV at The Maintenance Shop,in The Student Union on the campus of ISU,Ames,Ia. Part of a series.I don't believe Paul's show was aired. He was not in the best of shape on this night.

  • this sounds like straight from a hurting heart. maybe not his classic work but powerful - these ARE the blues!!

  • danny just raped bb up the butt with this solo

  • dude seriouly if he woudl jstu keep playing that harm and not sing this wouldbe 10 billion times better

not that hes a bad singer or anything

  • @igessthsisgrwnup Want the grits so you "get" it? Find the Nick Gravenites articles online about Butterfield, et al.

  • I was lucky enough to catch him at Alberts Hall in Toronto, not long before he passed. rip paul

  • I was just a young girl the first time i heard Blues and till this day im now 25 it gives me chillz when i hear it...It made music what it is today....In loving memorie of my father Michael Lawrence....RIP!

  • whered the thrill go..its seems to be missing?

  • bass notes on the right? Nice

  • excelente harmonicista.r.i.p.

  • I love this music and morer that just the blues but this way up there ; ]

  • I had the pleasure of sharing tunes, talks, beer & pretzels with Paul and Bishop, Dinwiddie, Naffy, Bloomfield and so on. I miss them--especially Paul more than you know. There will never be anyone to take Paul's place--for me he is the king of harp--his playing and his vocals were always the epitome of heartfelt EMOTION. He will never be replaced--nor will the greatness his band brought to this world and to me.

  • @bluesatbirth Spoken like a true Paul Butterfield fan, like you I miss him too!!

  • Amazing !!!

that guitar had a plate of G-lightans foot slapped on it.

  • cool groove and harp player

  • Excellent -

The thrill is never gone with Paul -

A true virtuoso of the blues harp.

    This touched me.

  • This is bad ass! Love it.

  • Paul was older than me but i am now a lot older than he will ever be but he had that something extra special that makes him ageless and still alive.Unique.

  • the dude looked like a Chicago Firefighter but he played like a son-of-a-gun...i hereby give this video the maximum allowable stars,i wish i could give it more...

  • @davethecaveman HE WAS BORN AND RAISED IN HYDE PARK AREA OF CHICAGO, I GREW UP IN GLENCOE WHERE MIKE BLOOMFIELD GREW UP, MY BROTHER USED TO HANG WITH HIM, AND I STARTED PLAYING HARP IN 69 WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE I GOT TURNED ON TO PAUL'S PLAYING AND SINGING, AND I STILL PLAY HARP 40 YEARS LATER. EVERY TIME I'M ON STAGE WITH MY BAND OR JAMMING WITH ANOTHER GROUP, MY HEART FELT SINGING AND PLAYNIG IS FOR PAUL AND IN HIS MEMORY

  • he's so pale i think he's going to die soon after thisconcert

  • i hope so!

  • Nice understated groove the band has. Butter has them doing exactly what he wants, but he doesn't need to be a prick about it. He could certainly pick band members.

  • RIP PAUL!

  • tremendo video, la cago!!

  • Somebody to tell me the key of the harmonica he is playing?

  • how can anybody listen to this for nine minutes solid?

  • I've been listning to this whole thing SOLID every day for many weeks.

    I wish it never ends.

  • The same way you just did? You know, eyes and that other stuff us mouth-breathers have?

Also, nobody that likes Paul Butterfield should have to take any shit at all from someone that likes Blink-182, Sum 41 and Death Cab for Cutie. But don't you worry, kiddie-punk, you'll grow out of it, and then you'll understand. Maybe try to listen to Blonde on Blonde or Electric Ladyland, it'll accelarate you.

  • I love Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan

  • Hey Bunny, I am not sure what Hendrix and Dylan have to do with this video, but those guys are two of my all time faves, as well.

  • I was talking to fabiank22

  • I can see that bro. I musta missed an earlier part of the conversation, sorry for the intrusion

  • whatever, he was just screamin' at me cuz I don't like Paul Butterfield

  • Butterfield, RIP was the beginning in the US for Blues by all us white idiots plus he gave us Elvin Bishop and Mike Bloomfield,RIP. One of the greatest harp players of all times. You need to be slapped around and woke up.

  • And you should be ashamed of yourself. A bottom-feeding punk rock guy putting down one of the upholders of the blues tradition. Not only should you listen to this for the entire nine minutes, it should be required listening for punk-ass kids like you.

  • lol, whatever, I can stand blues and folk, I really like it actually, but this is too long, and not a lot going on his albums are really good though

  • excellent.

  • diggin the beat

  • PB's "nuts up" reverse style of playing the harp.

  • Paul is a superb performer and the Bass guitarist is great too....turns it into a groovy jazzy style....Loved it:-)

  • Great version, but the bass solo really ruins that song lol

  • I love that Strat!

  • Can't hear this often enough,.....A magical moment in time!!

  • 7:18, bass solo

Expression on Butterfield's face is priceless: "who taught this kid to play?"

  • great song! and i love the bass player x)

  • Danny Draher was a big part of the 80's blues scene,I saw him back up butterfield, otis rush and Johnny copeland. he also used to headline small places with his wife dodie

  • Soooo smoooooth. Was such a talent... inspiring.

  • hot

  • blues is not only a music, it's a way of thinking and living, RIP Paul and RIP Mike!

  • god bles him

  • Frank Gravis!! Bass. So sad to never see him with Hiram Bullock again. They did so much fantastic music...! All the best ;_)

  • I love Paul Butterfield man, but wow, prime example of a guitar player playing bass. Kind of annoying.

  • The popularity of the blues hadn't come around then. I spoke to Paul that year, and he told me, "How can you make a living off the blues nowdays?" Well, it took several more years for it(blues) to resurge, and the shame of it all is Paul isn't around to blow harp and put all you critics to shame.

  • Paul was someone from the past blues scene that noone was listening to. This time is right before the yuppies began infiltrating the NYC blues clubs.

  • You've got to remember that blues music in 1985 wasn't being played much anywhere. So, after you insult all the band members here, these people you see playing were the few keeping the blues alive.

  • I practice to this video! Massive Harp!

  • danny is alive and well touring carribbean..THAILAND.ny all over....playing his ass off...sweet as ever....did a SOLO ALBUM IN 2004.....THAT STRAT GOT STOLEN.....BY THE WAY.....THAT CAT LOVES MAHI MAHI.....ATE A TONE WITH HIM IN ST CROIX .... ....k

  • that bass solo kinda ruined it

  • I saw Butterfield at his peak in the mid 60s. Here he seems somewhat tired and maybe even ill. But there is no mistaking the Butterfield soul coming through. As with all his music I never tire of this video. If only everyone had ears to hear. Does anyone know where this was taken?

  • @franklmac IN HIS LATER YEARS, PAUL SUFFERED FROM A TYPE OF KIDNEY DISEASE, AND ALONG WITH A COCAINE AND ALCOHOL PROBLEM, PASSED AWAY FAR TOO SOON, I MISS HIM A LOT, HE WAS THE REASON I STARTED PLAYING THE HARMONICA 40 YEARS AGO AND I STILL PLAY TODAY, AND MY BAND AND I PAY TRIBUTE TO HIM BY COVERING "BORN IN CHICAGO", "DRIFTIN AND DRIFTIN" AND A COUPLE OF OTHERS, RIP, PAUL

  • @franklmac I had the pleasure of playing harp at a friend's wedding when Paul sauntered in and checked me out. I died and went to heven that day. Long may he wave.

  • WHEST ist correct! D 2nd pos. What ever he owns the stage and my heart

  • Love the bit with him and the bass player, and I know jack about bass playing but I'd say he still has it. Come to think of it I know jack about harmonica playing and the blues as well. Good stuff.

  • Lungs are a bit gone, guitar work is a little by the numbers to be honest. Butterfield was a goddamn genius. I wouldn't want to remember him by this performance, still good to see anything by him.

  • This is about the best it gets .

  • I love the way at 2:08 he's just so deep into his solo that he asks the band for another phrase. It looks like he says "one more?"

  • IT'S ALL OVER NOW!

  • Yes- Butter played the harp upside down. he started on Classical flute and he preferred to have the low notes the other way.

  • does anyone else notice he played the harp upside down? check out the other vids too.

  • yes!! he must be left handed..

    sorry for the bad english..

    greetings from argentina

  • I've never heard a harp player with as good a feel for rhythm - his solos jump all over the song while still keeping to the beat.

  • he is THE BESSSSSSTTTTTT harp player

  • He had Soul, so what ever made you folks give 2 thumbs down-- well--- we all have our opinions-- I just think his playing was powerful and often unnoticed, that's all-- thanks.

  • humm he is so good, but do you know a guy named sonny terry ? Type his name in youtube, you will like.

  • That guitar player has some neat licks.

  • I'm not familiar with this version of Paul's band. Who is the guitar player?

BTW. I'm playing along. It does seem to be in Am.

  • Danny Draher

  • in his on right his is GOD.he is slicker then snot on a door knob.....................gp473

  • Jesus; this sure is hell some deep Blues.

  • ONE GOOD HARP MAN!

  • Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

  • Greatness

  • His voice... :( Damn that partying.

  • awesome!

  • i played this song with a bunch of my friends: 2 guitarists, 1 bassist, a drummer, trumpet, alto and tenor sax, and me on harmonica. i tried to give the tone Butterfield does in this, but i think i'll leave it to the professionals...

  • He is playing a D harp in 2nd position.

You can see he is playing the bottom end,not the middle register. He is flattening the 3draw a semi tone for the minor scale. The E note on the 1 draw he hits often is not the G harp.

  • TRUE

  • So creamy good. Takes us back in a really sweet way. Thank you -

  • i remember this as an Lonesome Pine recording from at least about twenty years ago now - along with Tensley Ellis also if my memory is not all gone- anyone else recall if i am right -the thrill is still there to hear and see this again thanks for posting

  • Danny Draher is a great guitarist I had the pleasure of working with and making guitars for in N.Y. Last I heard he's living and probably playin' his ass off in Chicago as of 2007.

  • To any that might be interested, I'm a luthier friend of Danny's. I built the guitar he's using. It is a DiMarzio Strat. There was a period in the early 80's when they were making replacement parts. It had a basswood body, a brass 'engine turned' pickguard. The neck is maple/rosewood. The pickups are Dimarzio 'Super Clean' humbuckers, which were 2 strat pu's in a gold plated housing. There were switches for those, and a blend for the neck pickup. He could get any combination of the 5 pickups.

  • Can't be sure, but I think its a C sharp in 8th position.

    If not, its a D.

  • Or an F flat in 6th.

  • 8th position ive never heard of that

  • Great version of the song. Was he the first to do that harp riff at the start?

Plus does anyone know if he ever recorded this song?

  • The band is in A and paul is playing crossharp in the key of D Major

  • the band is in the key of A and paul is playing in the harp key of D in 2nd Position or cross harp just for the record. Oxharp

  • Yes its a D harp, paul plays the harp upside down that is why it looks like he is playing G in 3rd position. what a great player he was.

  • The bass player was able to pull of a real blues oriented solo, which I don't often hear.

  • just started playing the harp this year, and this cat is my favorite along with Van the man Morrison. The old school is necessary to learn from, but this stuff never gets old. legit white guys who has been there.

  • Cool Harp! sounds like a Bb.

  • The Guitarist is Danny Draher. In the early to mid 90s he used to be a regular in the smaller NYC blues clubs (and big clubs on weeknights). He may still be - I'm just not out there anymore. He was a little eratic - brilliant one night, less so on the next. Don't know if he ever recorded on his own but I always felt like he was better than 95% of the players who "made it" in the 90s blues revival.

  • listen - missing his friends - no one here equal to his talent - these musicians must feel like they're in the presence of royalty -they are

  • i think you mean, " the notes that you play, not how many notes that count in blues...

  • Interesting guitar solo. Nice build up. Yeah, I am a guitarist. Harp sounds really nice also. But back to the guitar,Humbucker in a strat! It seems as he is using that neck humbucker all the way. Still sounds very much strat. He is doing it his way, which I really like...

  • Ehm, Paul is the harmonica player... Or did I understand you incorrectly maybe?

  • A moving performance by a great harmonica player.

  • Anyone remember Poynette or Iola ? I awoke from a foggy dream, opened my tent and looked to the south. The love march was rising from below the crest, a purple hue I rode to a spot near the warmly embedded stage, P.B. is, was and will always be remembered in the recess of my acidic memory....touche! boomers, we are.

ajf.....on the glacial plane that is south wisconsin.

    Blues forever...

  • Awesome... Beautiful song..

Would anybody happen to know what that sound/note is at 9:21? I'm guessing that sound is just a result of him pulling away from the harp while he's blowing or something? It definitely doesn't sound like a note that can be made on the harp.

  • w w w .s o t t o i l m e t r o .c o m

  • pure GOLD son.

  • P.B. was awesome....The bass player sucked.

  • Oh my God, poor man was literally dying here!He had a few cool songs back in the day but this hurts. The drugs did not only affect his health but also his playing.Rest in peace, Paul Butterfield!

  • christ those solos and his voice and just the song sends shivers up my spine. and i got the same bass a the bass player has, Fender Squire P bass, i think. i just don't got the skill

  • yeah, they're great, it's just tough seein' him like this. at least a lot of other great musicians found their way out of the hard life. that guitar solo's pretty bitchin' too.

  • Like the other video from this show that is posted, this is hard to look at, but necessary viewing if you want to see a person near the end after a being a real bluesman. Who cares who the other musicians are? They are nobodies that he has joined up with just before his demise. He can't sing or play much at this point. Loved Butter a ton and RIP

  • this clip honest to god brought a tear to my eye. the man was and is an absolute legend!

  • Moving:(

  • Who is on guitar?

  • Danny Draher - guitar .. check clip info son.

  • Paul performed this tune often during his later years, although he never bothered to learn the words. He was deteriorating and settling for second best.He looks unwell in this clip, see the Monterey 67 vid. on YouTube for a glimpse of him at his best doing "Drifting Blues"

  • I agree. There's so much raw feeling in that vocal it's almost hard to look at. I don't know when this performance took place, but I wonder if he was getting close to the end of the road at this point.

  • An Amazing Video, I gave it five stars not because of him, but because it is obvious he really believes the thrill is gone, he was sick in a sense, and we were losing him...

  • Great!

  • Brings back memories of seeing "The Butt" many times up in the NYC area growing up. A great bluesman.. Great vid....

  • That's "Butter" Dave!
