an adult GBBG would ealy kill drive away a skua form his food see this: a young GBBG scares away a skua....seethe clipp to the right Great Skua at Corsewall Point.... this is a GBBG. I dont think that the gull in this wid is a GBBG.

After reviewing this footage a bit closer, This DOES NOT, look like a GBBG to me. And if it is indeed a GBBG, its a juvenile at best. This just would not happen, to a full-grown adult BBG, even the juveniles are bigger than a Great Skua.
It also appeared that other gull's were diving on the 2 during the argument. So, it is very possible the gull's started the argument resulting in what we saw. They won't bite each other in the face, or the skua would have done it easily. No, if this was predation, the gull would have been bleeding in the 1st bite and dead. The skua's intent was clearly to punish the gull for some reason. But in the end, it looked like the gull got the last bite in and that was that.
This doesn't appear to be an attack to "kill". The skua has approx. a thousand pound per inch bite that would penetrate any flesh and cause bleeding in the 1st bite. This skua's intent could not be predation. A couple things appear to be potentially happening. The skua is higher on the pecking order and they both could have gone in at the same time for a fish causing them to argue. When they fight, they will bite each other's tails as punishment. The gull at some point was able to do that...TBC
well, here is a video in which a skua drowns a LBBG successfully. and i heard reports of skuas killing GBBG and northern fulmar. thus the skua is surly not on an "suicide mission" even fighting with a GBBG. maybe it is desperate yet not without a chance.
@cateyes221981 fair enough. fulmars spit oil and they usually do not care so much if a skua is around. however, i never have seen a skua being afraid of a northern fulmar but i have seen skuas chasing away fulmars...
GBBG's are our largest, & most predatory gulls in the world. Reaching lengths of 30in, with a 5.5ft wingspan, and weighing in close to 4pds. There not to be taken lightly by any means. However, this Skua had to be desperate, to try and take down a GBBG. Even a Herring Gull, would have put up one helluva fight. So in closing, this Skua was on a "suicide mission", to say the least. Because the things i've seen GBBG's kill, still amaze me. This Skua got lucky, VERY LUCKY indeed, during this scuffle
Nice footage, you captured there. I've been in the avian field, for nearly 25yrs now, and have seen my "fair share" of bird scuffles. However, living on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, i'm used to seeing quite a few GBBG's, as well as there smaller cousins the Herring Gull. But i never thought, a Skua would even attempt to go near a GBBG, much less try and kill it. Since both birds, don't have talons, its a total beak fight. And as aggressive as Skua's are, they pale in comparison to a GBBG.
Skuas are EVIL birds and should be shot.

@johnnycheck99 Skuas are not "Evil". They're aggressive, by nature.
Humans are aggressive by nature too, should they all be shot?
