it's an overstated and underpracticed idea, which is a shame. but the fact that it can apply to all things in life is what makes it so powerful. what i do when i have recurring sad thoughts is to make myself think something encouraging whenever a sad thought hits me. even something as simple as "you're gonna be fine" really works, because it forms a good thinking habit of self-encouragement.

I like your outlook here on remembering the good times in a person's life who has passed. While there is a time for mourning, I think there's much more to celebrate looking back on a person's life. Taking something "bad" or at least painful, and finding something good from it is something we all should learn to do more. Keep em coming Val, I enjoy watching these little tidbits. I have my birthday twice a year too. When I was littlie in my family we always got to pick our birthday dinner. I would always ask for a picnic, and watermelon. But being that I grew up in the cool part of the Midwest, I was a late December baby; there would be snow on my birthday, and no watermelon anywhere. So when I was supposed to turn ten I refused to open my presents, didnt want a party until I could get watermelon. I made everyone take the presents back tell June.

The last time I went out with my grandpa, he ordered this salisbury steak (basically a hamberger without a top bun and covered in gravy) and he let me try it. The next day, he left for Florida and died a week later on the way home due to a stroke. From that point on, everytime my family went to that restaurant, I ordered the salisbury steak. (That is, until they removed it from their menu.) That's how I celebrated my grandpa.
