ah, the stepping stones, as I recall. Finally got an rs232 cable to work on mine and my friends amiga sometime after this was released and we spent about 30 hours straight racig head-t-head on them until mine blew up, lol. The rollercoaster always ended at the top of the first hill, whoever was behind would just drive full speed into the other guy and he would be launched into space.
I remember first playing this in school. We had a fund raising sale and the older boys brought in their state-of-the-art Amigas and set them up in the science room. Made a games arcade. I bought it for my Amstrad CPC464+. I still remember the wording on the cassette cover "gargantuan arcs......" Now Im waiting for BF3, how times have changed!
Great game, this level was called the "stepping stone" the trick was to enter the stepping stones at 150 mph and use turbo at every land, :) lol thanks for the video
What a fantastic Game? Why can't can't they release these gems on the Play Station. I've kept most of my Amiga games in storage and still have them today. I knew back then that they were a bit special.
@BLOODYCLQ This gets recycled as if it is fact time and time again. The truth is that game designers wrote games for graphics cards that ordinary people could afford to buy. As for the PC having 'no colour', well, this game, which features 16 colour graphics from a palette of 4096 was available in 1989. VGA graphics on the PC, which had 256 colour graphics from a total palette of 262,144 was available from 1987.
There was no better feeling that nailing a jump at the perfect speed so you wouldn't lose any pace, that was the beauty of this game. Would somebody please make a re-make of this, please!
HA! I played this game to death...esp this track. I swear i could make it around the whole track without taking any damage. I had every jump and corner worked out to a tee. I miss my Amiga
I had this game on the PC, was so much smoother than this, anyway SCR is one of my favourite games of all time, spent hours playing this. Does anybody know where I can download either SCR or a modern clone of it on the PC?
This was a bad ass game for its day! I never played this game but I grew up in the 8 and 16 bit era of computers and consoles starting with my Apple ][ and many of my friends had Amiga's. I wanted an Amiga also because of the games and graphics and sound but never got one. Great System and not just for games. I wound up using the extensively in my 9th grade computer graphics class and the video capabilities were ahead of their time, In many ways they were better then PC and Mac at the time.
I can't even begin to count how many hours I must have spent playing this game! Thanks for posting the video! They ought to make an updated version for today's consoles/computers.
oh yes oh yes oh yes.... remember hanging off the edge of my seat joystick in hand ...no no no ...stay on the track, stay on the fucking track!! phew....oh shit!...etc etc .....
OMG!... I remember being a kid and playing this and going "wow... this is so realistic... how do they make it so 3D... look at the suspension on the car..." lol... Amiga still rules though...
A friend and I used to play this game using the two-player hook-up option via the RS232 cable. Utterly fantastic racing each other and trying to overtake on dangerous corners and jumps ,etc. We also used to drive in opposite directions and try and jump over each other. Fantastic game!!!!!!
@jcpadmore I used to do that too!. Took my Amiga 500 round mates house hookd up to his for 2-player action. omg I laughed SOO HARD playing this game when the car flew off the track. I think those sound effects really add to the hilarity of the moment. Ahh happy memories :D
i thought "can amiga do more vectors if there not filled?" but vector transparency needs more of CPU then filled vectors, am i right? (not sure, and can't say good, what i have to say, i'm german ;) )
Yes, where are you, Geoff Crammond? Since 2002 (the mighty "Grand Prix 4" I still keep playing today) there's nothing to see from him. There were rumours he wanted to do a new "Stunt Car Racer", but the hopes are gone a long time ago. Where is this genius hiding? So many bad racing-games on the market and the savior is nowhere to see. For example Codemasters is trying to do a "Formula One"-Game now, but I bet it will be trash against the "Grand Prix"-Series from Crammond. WHERE ARE YOU??? =(
Are you deliberately keeping the accelerator held down in a bid to show how annoying the superior Amiga engine sound is compared to ST? Just curious is all
The Amiga version boasted great sound for Stunt Car but heard like this it's just plain but irritating
OMFG, i remember that game, awesome, i think this was one of the amiga games, where i was laughing all the time, and jumping into nirvana because i couldn't calculate the speed loool.
And the crack at the top, when it was almost at the right side, and then flying at full speed into nowhere....hihi...amiga forever
One of my favourite Amiga (and Atari ST) games. Excellent. Wouldn't an expansion pack have been great? No fancy stuff, just a load of new tracks. Oh well.
OMG, I've never managed to complete Stepping Stones. Or at least I can't remember beating it, so long time have passed since I've played it on pal's C64...
Thanks for posting - for a brief few minutes I was 14 again, back in my family home, playing this without a care in the world. Ahhh life before mortgages, jobs and all the other stuff.
amen, i was right there with you, playing at home aged about 13. Amazing how a 2min YT clip can act as a time machine to take you back 20 odd years in the blink of an eye
This game was the tops, untill I saw indy 500 then vroom. lol. I use my winuae to continue the barrels of fun, though they looked better on the real thing....
I still remember the fun we had linking this up in multiplayer mode with an rs232 cable. After playing it seriously for a while, we ended up just mucking around to see how bad a wreck we could produce. The funniest was when we reversed one car at great speed up a large hill with the other car going forwards up the other side of the same hill - the clunking sound as the cars met and one car scraped across the roof of the other was superb.
Brilliant game. I kept my old Amiga for years so I could keep playing this, until I discovered the WinUAE emulator could play it perfectly on the PC.
I loved the fact that if you completed and won the entire championship, it would repeat from the start, but this time with blue tracks and much much faster cars :)
Would you believe it took me about half a year to realise there were other tracks aside from big hump and little ramp. It was then that this game got interesting!
Great game this, Stunt Car Racer is one of the best racing games for the Amiga ever made. Even if you play it today its still as addictive as when it wa first released, cool post mate.
You ever played 'Stunt Car Racer' TNT (The New Tracks)?? If you like the original you will love 'The New Tracks' version.
I agree that was one of the best racing games for the amiga. I ve olayed it a long time... My only wish at this time would have been a multiplayer option...
This one and Speedball 2 rank on top of my favorite games list, had them both on C64 and oddly enough even though I bought an Amiga as well (still have them both btw - priceless), I always preferred the 8-bit versions. :)
Pure awesome fun, perfect example of how gameplay is so much better than graphics, something new gamers haven't experienced.
I guess closest thing to a modern version is Trackmania series.
Back in '91 I was Stationed in Germany. This was during Desert Storm. Because of my specialty at the time, I was not actively invloved in "the fight". So, I played this game for hours and hours and hours..... Thanks for refreshing my memory. Great post!!!
I've just been sat here making exactly the same noises in my head!!! Classic game, why dont they remake these old titles? Surely they can capture the same simplistic but addictive gameplay but with all the modern bells and whistles of todays consoles. Excellent vid though, the rollercoaster track was always my favourite.
I had this for the amstrad cpc464! I remember it was the last game I had, and the day I had it (christmas day) was the day I had the megadrive.. memories! :D
Classic!!! I used to play this game on amiga when I was about 4-5! I was rubbish at it and kept falling in between the gaps in the track but it was great fun =D
fuck yeah. Loved the game.

It was smoother on ST. Has the exactly the same graphics on both machines. And the sound on ST was also better, although it was not digitized.
This game is an exception for Amiga vs ST case ;-). Like F16 Falcon and Armour Geddon also.

The Amiga has much better sound if the stunt car crashes against a wall or at ground.

Yes! That is a fact :-) There are some better sounds. But the engine sound on Amiga is terrible in my opinion.

Even watching it on Youtube is exhilirating!
Easily one of Amiga's best.

Its one of my favorite games of all time, I just love it. I really hope that Geoff Crammond make a modern version some day.

wow, sounds is a lot better on the Amiga than the poor old ST version, however I still prefer the ST version as it the framerate was a bit better.
It was cool that you could play 2-player over the serial port, Amiga vs ST!
