I know the biggest secret in speaking is not to try translating a language from another one when u speak it, but directly THINK in that language so the words come out fluently and naturally.

Good luck to all people learning languages. I speak russian(native), english, a little bit of kazakh and czech. Would love to learn mandarin, cantonese, arabic, hebrew, portuguese, spanish, italian and german. Maybe the easiest would be polish(via czech) and turkish(via kazakh)
I think Portuguese-Russian transition is so confusing for non-speakers because of these "zh" "sh" sounds. A lot of these in both languages make it kinda similar but they are completely different

@amdan7 I live at the moment in Ireland, and soon to be in Spain. I live quite a lot closer to Portugal and as such, in my opinion it would be a stupid idea for me to learn Brazilian Portuguese... Brazil's size, power and riches don't mean very much to me if I'm more likely to speak to a Portuguese person... My guess is because Luca is Italian, and Richard is British. Yes?
@amdan7 Simply cuz it's way easier to run into Portuguese people than Brazilians across Europe. Besides, he lives in Paris which is the city outside Portugal where the Portuguese community is the most important in Europe.

@daberr2 I speak 4 languages. I drank once and started singing and every 4 words or so I switched languages. That was fun as people followed the song and then got lost.

in ogni lingua ci sono accenti e pronunce diverse, vedo che il tuo inglese è americano, quindi immagino tu parli con questo accento anche in inghilterra? Credo che la capacità di assimilare gli accenti diversi sia innata, come sembra anche per te, il mio problema è che spesso tendo a prendere l'accento e la pronuncia della persona con cui parlo per questa versatilità persino in italiano e in inglese, a te non succede? comunque finalmente un italiano che sa parlare le lingue... sembrano rari ;)

Il fatto che in "ogni" lingua si usino idiomi diversi, che il senso della scrittura (e del pensiero?) siano differenti l'una dall'altra, e soprattutto che ognuna riconduce ad una Famiglia Linguistica specifica, ad una radice culturale a volte uguale, a volte differente, è (padroneggiando diverse lingue) culturalmente assolutamente arricchente. @poliglotta80 per me (parlo Italiano, Inglese, Spagnolo e Sardo) le lingue sono un interruttore: in certi momenti cambi modo di esprimerti e di pensare rimanendo comunque te stesso, e spesso mi rendo conto che certe cose posso esprimerle solo in una lingua perché più "adatta" rispetto alle altre. Anche a me capita di parlare da solo o pensare in una data lingua perché, come dici, se non hai motivo o maniera di interloquire con qualcun altro, è abbastanza difficile mantenerle.

Procedi per passi: cerca materiale atto al tuo livello e comincia a leggere testi che ti interessano. Ci sono un'infinità di risorse su Internet, il problema è proprio "orientarsi" in questo labirinto. Se vuoi informazioni più precise mi puoi spedire un messaggio in privato. Luca
Uhm no offence but it seems like you are using english grammar when you speak swedish. For example: "Jag tror att det är viktigt". Tro and tycka means the same in english but they have different meanings in swedish. Tro is to believe, to not be sure and tycka is for example to have an opinion.
Some pointers on Dutch: in “Russisch”, the ‘i’ is pronounced like ‘ie’ in ‘die’. Also, “ik houd van ze allen” is absolutely correct but a bit old-fashioned and could be better worded as “ik houd van ze allemaal”. Or better, change the sentence to “ik vind ze allemaal [adjective]”.

I vantaggi nel mondo di lavoro dipendono dal tipo di attività che intraprendi: sono evidenti nel caso di un manager, insegnante, traduttore e/o interprete, ma anche per ingegnere o un medico. Per quanto riguarda l'università..le lingue non si insegnano. Si imparano. E' una differenza fondamentale. Se sai come fare e hai tempo a disposizione 100 università non posso competere con il tuo entusiasmo di autodidatta :-) Luca

Luca, it pleases me that your taking on chinese and stepping out of the mainstream germanic/ romance/ slavic branches of I.E. where although indeed an accomplishment, learning a new language within the above mentioned boundaries mainly consists of new vocabulary and pronunciation. It's not until one leaves the commonly studied IE languages that the richness and variety of human language becomes apparent: the extensive noun classes of swahili, reduplication ...

@1988nemesis All'inizio ho avuto problemi con il tedesco e olandese. Il perchè l'ho scoperto dopo: anche se le ho imparate una dopo l'altra, mettere dentro il cervello lingue simili quando non si sono ancora pienamente formate, è pericoloso. Non c'è stata invece una grossa intereferenza tra portoghese e spagnolo perchè le ho imparate a distanza di anni l'una dall'altra. Luca
@poliglotta80 io credo che il mio problema sia dovuto al fatto che quando devo parlare in inglese cmq nella mia testa faccio una traduzione italiano-francese. io ho imparato lo spagnolo e il portoghese allo stesso tempo e tra loro non ho problemi ma c'è sempre il fatto che esce fuori il francese. Mi chiedevo come fai a pensare ogni volta in una lingua diversa senza passare per un'altra lingua?

incredibile! haha sono messicano e parlo tre lingue non so perché sto scrivendo in italiano, pero ya cambio a español haha. Hablo tambien ingles. Yes as you say I speak to myself and think in the other languages. I am obviously very fluent in spanish because is my native language, pero por alguna razon el ingles me trabo y cuando me pongo nervioso me cuesta mas trabajo. Aunque lo escribo muy bien y de hecho voy a la escuela a gli stati uniti. Creo que es un prejuicio ya de mexicano.

@amdan7 I live at the moment in Ireland, and soon to be in Spain. I live quite a lot closer to Portugal and as such, in my opinion it would be a stupid idea for me to learn Brazilian Portuguese... Brazil's size, power and riches don't mean very much to me if I'm more likely to speak to a Portuguese person... My guess is because Luca is Italian, and Richard is British. Yes?

in ogni lingua ci sono accenti e pronunce diverse, vedo che il tuo inglese è americano, quindi immagino tu parli con questo accento anche in inghilterra? Credo che la capacità di assimilare gli accenti diversi sia innata, come sembra anche per te, il mio problema è che spesso tendo a prendere l'accento e la pronuncia della persona con cui parlo per questa versatilità persino in italiano e in inglese, a te non succede? comunque finalmente un italiano che sa parlare le lingue... sembrano rari ;)

Fantastico Luca, e grazie a Richard per questa intervista. Il fatto che in "ogni" lingua si usino idiomi diversi, che il senso della scrittura (e del pensiero?) siano differenti l'una dall'altra, e soprattutto che ognuna riconduce ad una Famiglia Linguistica specifica, ad una radice culturale a volte uguale, a volte differente, è (padroneggiando diverse lingue) culturalmente assolutamente arricchente. TI riconosci ancora nella tua Cultura nativa? (O ti attrae di più un'altra Mentalità)? Ciao!

In un certo senso è vero: quando parlo una lingua che non sia la mia mi sento diverso, cioè non si tratta solo di produrre "altri suoni", ma di sintonizzarsi su un'altra lunghezza d'onda, e la cultura fa parte di questa "visione del mondo". @poliglotta80 per me (parlo Italiano, Inglese, Spagnolo e Sardo) le lingue sono un interruttore: in certi momenti cambi modo di esprimerti e di pensare rimanendo comunque te stesso, e spesso mi rendo conto che certe cose posso esprimerle solo in una lingua perché più "adatta" rispetto alle altre. Anche a me capita di parlare da solo o pensare in una data lingua perché, come dici, se non hai motivo o maniera di interloquire con qualcun altro, è abbastanza difficile mantenerle.

Sono una grande "fonte di ispirazione" :) volevo farti una domanda: io ho studiato (male) il tedesco a scuola, il problema è che non l'ho mai usato concretamente. So leggerlo e un po' ascoltarlo ma per quanto riguarda l'uso attivo mi trovo spesso in difficoltà. Anche quando sono andato a Berlino mi esprimevo in modo molto elementare. In che modo mi consigli di riprendere e ampliare la conoscenza della lingua?

Procedi per passi: cerca materiale atto al tuo livello e comincia a leggere testi che ti interessano. Uhm no offence but it seems like you are using english grammar when you speak swedish. For example: "Jag tror att det är viktigt". Tro and tycka means the same in english but they have different meanings in swedish. Tro is to believe, to not be sure and tycka is for example to have an opinion.

Some pointers on Dutch: in “Russisch”, the ‘i’ is pronounced like ‘ie’ in ‘die’. Also, “ik houd van ze allen” is absolutely correct but a bit old-fashioned and could be better worded as “ik houd van ze allemaal”. Or better, change the sentence to “ik vind ze allemaal [adjective]”.

I vantaggi nel mondo di lavoro dipendono dal tipo di attività che intraprendi: sono evidenti nel caso di un manager, insegnante, traduttore e/o interprete, ma anche per ingegnere o un medico. Per quanto riguarda l'università..le lingue non si insegnano. Si imparano. E' una differenza fondamentale. Se sai come fare e hai tempo a disposizione 100 università non posso competere con il tuo entusiasmo di autodidatta :-) Luca

@1988nemesis All'inizio ho avuto problemi con il tedesco e olandese. Il perchè l'ho scoperto dopo: anche se le ho imparate una dopo l'altra, mettere dentro il cervello lingue simili quando non si sono ancora pienamente formate, è pericoloso. Non c'è stata invece una grossa intereferenza tra portoghese e spagnolo perchè le ho imparate a distanza di anni l'una dall'altra. Luca

@poliglotta80 io credo che il mio problema sia dovuto al fatto che quando devo parlare in inglese cmq nella mia testa faccio una traduzione italiano-francese. io ho imparato lo spagnolo e il portoghese allo stesso tempo e tra loro non ho problemi ma c'è sempre il fatto che esce fuori il francese. Mi chiedevo come fai a pensare ogni volta in una lingua diversa senza passare per un'altra lingua?

E' come se le lingue si fossero "installate" in compartimenti separati nella mia testa, quando ne parlo una, si attiva una parte che non è disturbata dalle altre, e lo "switch" accade in maniera pressochè immediata.
