00 buck will penetrate several walls and still be lethal. Not QUITE as bad as most handguns. I prefer #4 buck for that reason--it will also, but fewer than 00. Also, more pellets mean more chances of something vital being hit (provided the pellets are big enough to penetrate sufficiently). Layout of the house and location of neighbors might mean some other choice is a better one for someone else, of course.
Oh and as for mossberg vs remington, I prefer mossy shotguns and Remington rifles, but I'm open to all haha. I like how mossy shotguns are easier to load, and I grew up on Remington rifles. Love em all
I made the mistake of not researching enough when I got my mossbergs. I have 3 500's, ones a field model that was a gift, the other two are a persuader and a mariner. I paid about 350 for each and they are both amazing shotguns. I shot my buddy's maverick, same performance. I got one not to long ago to throw in one of my trucks kind of for shits and giggles, just extra. It's awesome, simple, Im just used to the tang I stead of crossbar safety.
How do you like the maverik. I am a huge 500 fan and was thinking of grabbing a couple of the maveriks as spare loner/give away shotguns for friends and family.
@mixflip Should i worry about dust or anything damaging my weapon ? this is my first gun and i dont want anything bad to happen to it but i need it ready for home defence quickly
@FullmetaljacketJ Unless your house has no windows and you live in a desert I wouldnt worry too much about dust jamming your gun? Keep it clean and oiled and it should serve you well for home defense. More importantly you need to practice shooting it. Time yourself. Practice getting up, pulling it from the safe or secure location, and getting on target. Get a feel for how long it really takes to do what you need to do.
@strakill I own a Maverick 88 and it is basically a clone of a Mossberg 500, I have not had a single problem with mine, its a nice shotgun for the money.
Alright people it doesnt fucking matter what gun you have for home defence as long as it can kill the intruder. It's not like youre gonna have a whole army breaking down your door.
@TheBlitz1 Agreed. The point of my bothering to make a comment was to entice folks to look into the option of enjoying the ownership of a shotgun that is almost a work of art. Beautiful lines and workmanship, exquisite balance and smooth operation...vs. clunky, unbalanced, cheap, junk.
Like having a meal at Wolfgang's vs McDonald's.
Mixflip carries on in this video like his gun is his pride and joy...s p e c i a l, when in fact, it's a turd.
Thank you for mentioning the thumb catching feature of the spring loaded elevators. I have come back from many dove hunts with a bloody thumb from quick reloading. Love Mossberg's elevator.
@mememe123xyz We have Remingtons at work and I have had my thumb get snagged on the shell elevator a couple times. No blood but it still sucked and slowed me down a second or so. Sometimes a second can be life & death in a gunfight. I now run a Mossberg 500 as my primary home defense shotgun. Its old simple and plain... but its the best fit for me.
that Buck and ball ammo looks crazy!!!!!! awesome stuff man.. can u buy it online? i'm gonna check that stuff out.. it looks totally devastating... eitherway man good phylosophy as far as every responsible.. law abiding.. citizen should (KEEP AND BEAR ARMS) 2cd ammendment... especially a shotgun for every home.. awesome man good stuff
great gun, i personally use either the mossberg, 500 or the remington 870... but your gun is cool it's a good lil gun you have, i just paid a lil more because i dont like the plastic stuff.. the heat shield should not be plastic that makes zero sense but the main thing is u do have a nice gun at a bargain $ u did good for 199$ but if it was a combat Military or police. situation the mossberg 500 is the way to go or the 870 remington.. both great guns
Remington 870 Express, best home defense gun. I use mine for Defense all the time. I bought a $199 Maverick myself but soon found that it wasn't worth the $199 price (which was a very high price for what its worth by the way) and ended up throwing down $350 for an 870 12 gauge with an extended tube.
@Intoxiqated I have long since sold this shotgun. It served its purpose and it never once failed me. Im sad to hear yours didnt? I like Remingtons, we use them at work (Im a cop) but I used Mossbergs when I was attached to the Marines and I have been a big fan of Mossbergs dual extractors and tang safety and slide release behind the trigger guard for 2 decades. I always say, get what works for you. There is no one perfect gun for every person.
Glad to see a fellow Marine, I've also used many Mossbergs and Remingtons alike and I couldn't agree more with you that its all about personal preference. Mossbergs are wonderful guns, don't get me wrong, however the Mavericks are actually made with parts from Mexico and the 88's have been known to break frequently. Mine didn't work very well so I traded it in.
@Intoxiqated Semper Fi my friend. I was actually a Navy squid attached to the FMF (a Corpsman) so I unfortunately am not a Marine. I will admit, being a Navy squid with the Marines was the very best duty I could ever ask for though. I spent more time with Marines than with the Navy and I dont mind that one bit. I feel more at home at Camp Pendleton,MCB Kaneohe and Camp Hansen than any Navy base. lol.
you got a great price, 199$ is cheap! however if your doing military operations the mossberg 500 is a much more relaible/and prooven system due to the lack of plastic parts. also the 500/ is MIL-SPEC rated.. and so it's worth the extra$ however for home defense like your using it for.. your good to go ,man.. great purchase..
@BFCSUPERMAN Come on over. There is always more room for one more good American (or American at heart lol). We have lots of space. Just ignore the politics.
I actually keep mine loaded with birdshot. living in a duplex, I wouldnt want the buck shot to go through the wall. And if I can't fuck up someone's christmas with 5 birdshot rounds, I'm in trouble.
@Ninjaculation Your best bet is to go online to a specialty ammo site and buy beanbag rounds. You won't kill your opponent and theres no way that you can cause any collateral damage (unless a loud gunshot counts). I myself live in a building where my front door doesn't have anybody behind it so I don't have to worry about killing anyone but the guy in my house.
Lose the K-mart ranger crap - heat shield, ammo rack, sling. Keep the light because that's okay. A sling is for field carrying - it's "home defense" remember - just something else to snag on things. If you are right handed, a shell holder on the left side of the reciever will just snag against your stomach/shirt. Heat shield - Pffft! Who needs sights for buckshot at close range. A shell holder on the right side of the buttstock so it's not rubbing against you is more practical.
@redlegagent I agree 100%. Truth be told I sold this shotgun over a year ago. I bought the heat shield for shits & giggles and hated the plastic GRS. They were non adjustable and as you mentioned absolutely useless for indoor work. The heat shield actually was usefull for grating cheese lol. My current home defense shotgun is a plane jane Mossberg 500 with no sling no nothing. I want a white light but Im waiting for a specific fore end I saw at shot show to test & evaluate.
Hand guns are alot better for going around corners, but depending on which you have, won't pack a big of a punch like a good ol' shotgun. Another good reason to have a shotgun (especially pump) is the invader will most likely HEAR the pump and be like "Oh shit"
@TheSaiyanKing Its called the 2nd Amendment - the right to bare arms. How else do you enable citizens to defend themselves against tyranny and dictatorship. Look at Switzerland. They have a 90% citizen firearms ownership percentage. How do you planto stop a thug doing a home invasion? Harsh language? Call 911 and wait an hour for the police to show up? I have a wife and 2 kids to protect. Have you seen what a drug addict is capable of when they get desperate?
@TheSaiyanKing Guns in general are not expensive if you can afford a few hundred dollars. A pump shotgun is low tech. A used Glock can be bought for $400. An old military surplus SKS rifle can be bought for $300. An old Mosin Nagant bolt action Army surplus rifle can be bought for $100. Guns are not expensive at all. I guess where guns are restricted they cost alot more?
@mixflip Well, we dont actually know how much they cost, since fire arms are restricted. The only people who can own them are hunters, police, people in the army and some politicians. And for protection, we usually have baseball bats or swords.
@TheSaiyanKing Just pretend you are a hunter. Buy a gun. And if you ever need to defend your family against bad people who want to do you harm... at least you will have a fighting chance. I'd rather have a gun vs a stick or a knife any day.
@mixflip Well Switzerland has a 90% citizen firearms ownership because those people are in the Swiss army. They are not just armed civilians, but I can see your point; although Switzerland being so small is kind of unique, as there is less chance of being robbed in comparison to a large country like the US. I never quite understood the 2nd Amendament until now, in fact I wish my country had it, because nothing says freedom like having the power to fight injustice on your own.
@payback88 Im glad you understand a bit more now. We Americans have constitutional rights. The 1st is the right to freedom of speech. Guess what right was invented over 200 years ago by the colonists who fought back against British tyranny? Yes the 2nd right is to bare arms. What a great concept. Its not a perfect country but its one of the better ones out there for sure. There must be a reason why thousands of immigrants come here every year? Freedom is something worth fighting for.
@CrazySexyMofo I dont buy my guns from websites. I buy them in at local gunstores so I can inspect them before I buy. Plus I hate waiting for my guns. Delayed gratification sucks.
That leveler is the reason I got the mossberg too! My benelli (its for hunting) has that same piece of crap shell lifter and it cost two grand! My thumb got jammed all the time! At first I thought something was wrong with it!
Home defense!forget it wouldn't even consider it. Good choice!
@1john1992 Shotguns have their strengths & weakness's just like handguns and rifles have strengths & weakness's. No gun is perfect for every scenario and every shooter. AS for shotguns being overkill? Maybe? Maybe not?I guess if the bad guy is a tiny 98lb crack head wearing a T-shirt & shorts and a Swiss army knife it could be overkill? But if he is a 250lb gang member wearing a leather jacket and high on meth looking for money for his drug habit then maybe its not overkill?
@mixflip I've heard the barrels on a 500 are not as thick and have a lower proofing than a 590 or a Remington 870 and for people who do a lot of shooting the barrel is more likely to wear out on a 500, the thought being the thinner barrel will heat up quicker, and fail sooner; where as the other 2 firearms should last much longer. Just something I heard & I was curious how your mileage had been.
200$ ?:)) OMG I want to live in US:)) here a air rifle is 300 $ , a shotgun starts at 700 $....- -And I forgot to mension the papers u need u must w8 like 1 year..
@qpae123 Thats ironic. You would think that you guys would be able to buy guns even cheaper than us Americans since AK47's are actually made in Romania. Thats sad to hear.
@mixflip U want to hear something really ironic?:)) We cant buy any AK type weapon we produce here in Cugir, none of AKs are register for Hunting in Romania - -.
They are register in Germany, Italy I bet US :))....etc
But I can buy an AR 15 for 2000 $ - - but not my own country cheap weapons .YEp Ironic is the word:))
@mixflip I can buy a Russian Dragunov , but not a Romanian PSL cose all Romanian Guns are not registered for hunting in Romania :)) U ever heared in ur live a bigger absurdity?:))
@qpae123 I just bought a mini Draco made in Cugir for $449 USD. Your politicians need to be voted out or you guys should organize and demand better gun laws enacted by your politicians. That sucks.
@mixflip Guns are banned for civilians in Romania. U can buy firearms only if ur a hunter, and to become a hunter u must face a half ton of papers, taxes and :)) w8 like one year:)))
Even for an air rifle u w8 the autorisation like 1 month. For defense u can buy only rubber bullets that type makes me sick, A rubber bullet pistol is like 700 $, a bullet is almost 2 $ AND IS A USELLES PIECE OF SHIT LMAO.
@qpae123 Guns are banned? I am guessing the criminals in Romania use knives though...right? Thank God for the US Constitutions 2nd amendment and a citizens right to bear arms. Hitler banned guns so he could rule the citizens without fear of the citizens fighting back. I appreciate my freedoms a little bit more just talking to you my Romanian friend. Stay safe out there.
@mixflip Yep, katanas lmao, dark ages style:)) . I hope law will change will time, before ww2 we were a kingdom and everyone had tons of guns. Ofcourse after ww2 the comunists came and beat/ torture/killed every gun owner , many antique rifles very expensive rifles were destroyed. West solded us to Russia ,adt they destroyed our country in every aspect. Ofcourse a goverment that fears its own people will ban the guns.
@xUbastardx I hate when kids put pistol grips on shotguns. Pistol grips are for breeching and if you arent trained to breech doors or dont have breeching ammo or have no need to breech doors then they really are just a fad and a novelty for the average Joe who dont know better.
well mine isnt flush like i can reply with a video response to show you it says on the paper thing to turn with a 1/4 spin n it should be good ut mine has a little gapbetween it
this looks like my 12 gauge 350 tactical shotgun from savage arms but i need help is the barrel suspose to be flush with the gear box or what ever its called
@mixflip No I'm not a tin foil nut job. See how text messages convey different meanings? I meant that most domestic violence that involve beating people are of coarse serous, but the others that are based on hearsay and still result in conviction, yeah I'd say those cases are nothing but a way to oppress someone's rights to buy a gun. Especially if they cannot provide medical evidence or proof anyone caused any injury.
@wwe107 I do agree with you that there are women out there that accuse guys of DV just to hurt the guy and watch him get put in cuffs because they know its standard policy to cuff the male in any DV call. Its crazy but it happens. This often ruins the poor guys life starting with loss of his gun rights which is sad. This happened to my cousin even though his wife tried to commit suicide with pills. He still got cuffed and charged simply because the law works for the woman automatically.
Both Mossberg and Remington make great shotguns. I have an 870 because the ambidextrous safety and action button don't work well with with my pistol grip on my stock. If I had a normal stock I would have gone with a Mossberg. Nice gun.
@GLOCK22BYITCH And you can eat shit and die you occupy wall street lazy ass hippie loser slacker. Enjoy the block and delete you internet tough guy pussy.
@GLOCK22BYITCH Ha ha I own both. I used a Mossberg in the Marines and I use a Remington with the police. I think I know what Im talking about. They are both great guns and one is not better than the other if you know their strengths and weakness's are.
I bought at mossberg 500 with a slug barrel several years back, and I bought a vent rib barrel with accu chocke system. Mossberg makes excellent shotguns, Im looking at putting a ported turkey choke and using number 4 turkey shot for home defense for now. Im looking at also buy .410 mossberg 500 and a 590a1 with ghost rings for just home protection. Im a LIFE Member in the Nra and I believe in Home Defense.
@GLOCK22BYITCH Yeah Im stupid for liking dual extractors, ambidextrous saftey, slide release behind the trigger and a shell elevator that is not spring loaded that can pinch your thumb or gloves. I guess the United States Marines are idiots too since they have been using Mossbergs for decades. Btw going around calling folks stupid is a quick way to get blocked and deleted. I dont tolerate disrespect on my own channel.
Nice video. Ordered one to get in store tomorrow cause of this video. Me personally, grew up on remingtons, and when I was 11 I was using my dads 870 and bout ripped my thumbnail off on the bar to load a shell. I worked around that, but it is definitely quicker and easier to load a mossberg maverick 88. I'll prob get the same setup you did with a laser light, and if the gun shop has them I'll get a top rail for it for an extra holosight I have
@GAredneck389 For the price its hard to beat. Plus the features like dual extractors and non spring loaded shell elevator and tang safety and slide release behind the trigger...those are all features I really like.
@ffhjfhfjhf Come on over mate! There is plenty of room over here. I still cant believe you Brits lost your gun rights. You folks have let the liberals take over and now you cant even defend yourself if someone breaks into your home with knives and molotov cocktails. If a foreign country tries to ever invade again like WWII the average citizen wont be armed for self defense. Switzerland has about a 90% citizen gun ownership rate and their crime is very low. Thats how the UK should look at guns.
@mixflip While I believe Britain went to far in gun control. I do believe we need more unified gun legislation. My coworker just bought an AR-15 from a private seller at a gun show and I know he's got a serious record including beating the crap out of his girl friend. Not everyone in this country should be allowed to own a firearm.
@Daikenhunter I agree. Not everyone should have guns. Only citizens with clean records and no history of violence or mental disorders should be allowed to buy guns. Unfortunately a face to face sale does not require a background check which is a huge weak point in the laws here. Sounds like you have the same problem in the UK.
@mixflip I hope a guy with a bogus domestic violence charge saves your life one day when the shit hits the fan. Maybe then, you'll comprehend how ignorant your argument is. You don't have to have laid a finger on someone to be changed with domestic violence. The Nanny States want everyone to suck their thumb and depend on a knight in shinning armor or a cop to save them. Cops and military can kill you or torture you to death without telling anyone because they "think" you did sometin.
@wwe107 So wait a minute. Every person who has a domestic violence charge is "bogus"? If anyone has an ignorant argument its you. I also never said the police or military will come to anyones rescue. A cell phone wont stop a home invasion which is why I made this video. You hope a guy with a bogus DV charge saves me? I am not in the game of letting others save me when I believe in saving myself. Are you one of those tin foil hat conspiracy freaks?
@mixflip No I'm not a tin foil nut job. See how text messages convey different meanings? I meant that most domestic violence that involve beating people are of coarse serous, but the others that are based on hearsay and still result in conviction, yeah I'd say those cases are nothing but a way to oppress someone's rights to buy a gun. @mixflip It's my opinion that there should not be a federal firearms disability upon a person unless they are a Felon, not a Misdemeanor and that they actually have killed someone or other conviction like rape. A person can be convicted of DV and have never hurt or killed anyone. Screaming at the wife is domestic violence, terrorist threats. Then the state wil make the person look insane, which is more of a lie if they test fine and not crazy. It's a sham.
I LIKE THIS VIDEO ALOT,IT IS VERY INFORMATIVE. DO YOU PREFER PUTTING THE EXTRA SHELLS ON THE SIDE LIKE YOU DID WITH THIS GUN,OR ON THE BUTT STOCK LIKE I HAVE SEEN IN OTHER VIDEOS? KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, YOUR ALWAYS EXPLAIN EVERYTHING SIMPLE AND TO THE POINT,JUST WHAT PEOPLE NEED, THANKS!!
Nice looking set up. How many rounds does it hold in the tube? I pimped out my mossberg 500 with lazer/light combo mounted on the tube, ghost ring heat shield, a side folding six position stock. I like the shortest position. Feels nice and tight when I bring the shotgun up to aim. All I want to get next is a shell holder mounted on the side folding stock. My stock tube only holds five rounds. I keep four in the tube after I take a shot with an empty chamber. Just pump and ready to go.
@WolfPackAttack1911 Yes probably about 99% of the 500 will fit on this gun other than the trigger housing since the 500 uses a tang safety and the 88 uses a cross pin.
@jimrbsn Very good points and I agree with you 100%. You see young guys wanting to put pistol grips (no stock) or folding stocks but I think a solid stock is much better for accuracy and control. Your right, thumping and gouging can be done with the muzzle alot faster than turning the gun around for a buttstroke but I like the buttstroke option for sure.
@omglmao12345 Thanks. I just picked up a nice zombie machete too. I made a video about it if you want to see it. Look for it on my channel. Its called a "kukri machete" but It should be called a zombie head remover!!!
i am on the market for a home defence weapon and the maverick is among one of my choises. second choise is a benelli nova slug. abotu the video, very mature, reasonable with good arguements but a small question. since you are also talking melee (quote: buttstroking) would you consider adding a mini bayonet on the picatinny tri-rail you chose. if not plz explain. ty in advance
@togashigr11 I think its all a matter of preference. If you think you could benefit from a bayonet? Then yes it is a good idea. People love to accessorize their guns with useless parts that just make the gun heavy and clumsy. The only time I like to ad things to my gun is if it serve a specific purpose. If it isnt useful then I take it off.
Good review and hella good Shotgun,, i've chosen this one to be my HD, but the only thing is that i'm still wondrin' 'bout the way it would act with 3" slug and would it?
@thesabrix I wouldnt use 3" slugs for home defense unless you are worried about bears doing a home invasion? 00-buck is borderline overkill but as I said before...use what you feel comfortable with. I use 00-buck or buck & ball just to have the shot spread and stopping power.
@NemanorTheAlmighty I actually sold this shotgun last year but it ran 100% flawless when I had it. Most malfunctions with pump shotguns are from "short stroking" the action which is the shooters fault and not the guns. The 88 is based off the legendary Mossberg 500 so its really hard to mess up a classic design like that.
@wisdom777ification I sold it to buy a better shotgun. I dont remember the price of the buck & ball but its kinda expensive for sure. Any high quality defensive ammo will be more expensive than cheap target ammo. Probably $10 to $15 just for a box of 5 I'd bet? Defensive ammo rarely get shot so the manufacturers need to make as much money they can off ammo that doesnt get shot much.
Very informative video! One question...I keep hearing that plastic parts on a shotgun are prone to breaking from the impact of recoil. Is that just an exaggerated claim?
@pcgamerjoe Thats true. In fact I do not recommend the ghost ring sights that you see in this video. They are cheap plastic and they are non-adjustable so they are basically useless and just there for looks. I actually bought the heat guard and the sights just came attached to it. If you are going to get ghost ring sights, then get high quality metal adjustable sights that actually screw onto the receiver or onto a rail. Thanks for watching.
The gun in the safe thing... I can't explain in words how much I'm against that. If someone breaks into your home, will you have time to get to your safe and retrieve your weapon? Whatever you choose to do is your business, but having a firearm within arm's reach in the event of a break-in is an invaluable source of comfort to me. Being ready at a moment's notice is likely to be critical in such an event.
@TJ347 Very true. Most home inasions (here in Las Vegas anyway)...happen in just a matter of seconds. Its violent and fast and often it involves a pair or a group. When the economy is tough bad people resort to bad things to get what they want. I actually use a handgun as my primary HD weapon. The shotguns and rifles are more for a major SHTF event. I would be happy with just a shotgun though if that was all I had. I'd make it readily available though, just as you said.
I think a flashlight on a shotgun for HOME defense purposes is a bad idea. As soon as u turn on the flashlight you will draw fire from an armed intruder. About the only place a civilian will be justified shooting an assailant with a shotgun is in their own home. So why not just hit a wall switch or remote control & turn on the room lights - which u can configure to illuminate the intruder but leave u in the dark for more protection? It's ur home & future battleground so wire ur home accordingly
@CaneFu Just curious, have you ever taken a defensive firearms class? No offense but just because you have a light doesnt mean you have to keep it on. You can "flash" to identify which could also stun and temporarily blind and disorient a person who looks directly into a white light who has been in the dark for hours. Get off the X and shoot. Also you may not be near a switch or can find the controller. Theres an old saying KISS. Keep it simple stupid. (im not calling you personally stupid)
@mixflip :) A light on your gun gives the Bad Guy a point to shoot at ,PLUS, everytime you use that light ,you are pointing a loaded gun at EVERYTHING and EVERYONE!
@HerbWalker You hear a strange sound like someone is climbing in a back window at 3am. You're groggy and crusty eyed and you creep over to the sound in the dark to investigate. You clear the corner and see an open window and a dark figure fumbling in the dark so you just start shooting without identifying/knowing your target. You turn the light on and its your teenage son who snuck out to go to a party who is drunk...and is now dead. Its one of the golden rules.Identify your target.
I am a retired police officer & no one used flashlights more than me & it's a myth that they "stun" or "blind" bad guys.
We don't always prioritize checking flashlight batteries on a regular basis & left sitting for awhile they are often dead when we need them. My house never gets pitch black because in all the rooms there are computer lights, DVD player lights, night lights, or dim light from outside that lights up everything enough to identify someone & the power never goes out
@CaneFu So what works for you is what everybody should do? White lights, if used properly can be much more of a strength rather than a weakness. Its all a matter of training. I find it hard to believe as a cop you never worked swing or grave shift with no white light because it gave your position away? Didnt you use your take downs to blind the driver as you walked up to the car? Yes it does blind people.
Your self defense shoot will be inside your home - that's the only place it will be legal. Therefore, you can plan every detail in advance should that unlikely scenario happen where you have to defend yourself. You are stuck in the mindset of using street tactics in a strange environment where none of that is necessary in your home. A handheld remote control for your lights that is stored right next to your shotgun will give a decided advantage.
@CaneFu Well it looks like we are at an impasse. My way works for me and your way works for you. I am not going to change your mind and you will not change mine. The difference is that I dont have to use my light if I dont need to. And if the fight spreads to areas that your controller doesnt work... well you see where I am going with this I hope? Also, during hurricane Katrina power was out for days. Home invaders love power outages. I think you are the one missing the point. Good luck brother
"if the fight spreads to areas that your controller doesn't work"
What fight? If they exit your house you let them go unless you want to end up in prison. We weren't talking about Katrina as that is an entirely different situation. You know what works even better than a shotgun? Not letting anyone in your house in the first place. Doors & windows can easily be secured in a way that no burglar will want to bother getting through them. It's amazing how many people would rather shoot.
@CaneFu No no no...again you are missing the point. I mentioned Katrina because the power went out for several days. Gangs of home invades was not the point. The electricity was. The point is that you may not have the luxury of electricity for your trusty little light controller. Will the average home owner ever wire his house to tactically control the lighting specifically to have an edge in a home invasion? No ,its just not practical. But buying a light for you gun is very practical.
Not practical??? You can buy lamp remote controls for $20 and they just plug in the outlet. I have seen shotgun foregrips advertised for as much as $150-$250 which is a crazy price for a flashlight & plastic grip. AGAIN, the Katrina situation was something entirely different as I stated before.
The problem is becoming apparent here - you just enjoy playing with toys. I'm sure you have little drills around your house with your shotgun pretending to search for "bad guys" in your home.
@CaneFu There is no problem here. The only problem I see is that you are starting to become disrespectful and insulting when I never took it there. Its clear what type of person I am dealing with now. Insult me again on my own channel and I will block you and delete your comments. If you want to talk guns and tactics...you are welcome to have your opinion but disrespect is childish. Youre a retired cop? Im getting the vibe that you might not be.
Go ahead and block me and delete my comments as I don't care - it's obvious that you're an overgrown child who still enjoys "playing army" in the privacy of your home. I used to meet people like you - imaginary badass wannabes that end up hurting people when there were better alternatives. My opinion is that you would shoot first and ask questions later and then wonder why you ended up in jail for your actions. Good luck.
@CaneFu Very mature. Playing Army? Did you serve our country? I did my 6 years. The Fleet Marine Force 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade is definitely not playing Army lol. You want to be blocked? Ok buddy you got it. Good luck to you and your light controller technique.
Just reading the comment about securing doors and windows, Come to my house and I'll show you how easy it was for the buglers to break a safety glass sliding door (they all have safety glass BTW,) All it took was a spring loaded center-punch. They didn't even try to jimmy the door. I have an alarm system with very loud sirens, which probably made their stay a hasty one.

Love em all
GAredneck389 1 week ago
I made the mistake of not researching enough when I got my mossbergs. I have 3 500's, ones a field model that was a gift, the other two are a persuader and a mariner. I paid about 350 for each and they are both amazing shotguns. I shot my buddy's maverick, same performance. I got one not to long ago to throw in one of my trucks kind of for shits and giggles, just extra. It's awesome, simple, Im just used to the tang I stead of crossbar safety.

@mixflip how do you store your 12 gauge ready for home defence ? i have mine leaning against the wall by my door in the police cruiser setting
( Slide unlocked nothing in chamber 9 in the tube) Grab rack shoot

@FullmetaljacketJ Right now I am using my handgun as my primary HD weapon. When I do use my shotgun I set it up cruiser ready.
mixflip 4 days ago
@mixflip Should i worry about dust or anything damaging my weapon ? this is my first gun and i dont want anything bad to happen to it but i need it ready for home defence quickly
FullmetaljacketJ 1 day ago
@FullmetaljacketJ Unless your house has no windows and you live in a desert I wouldnt worry too much about dust jamming your gun? Keep it clean and oiled and it should serve you well for home defense. More importantly you need to practice shooting it. Time yourself. Practice getting up, pulling it from the safe or secure location, and getting on target. Get a feel for how long it really takes to do what you need to do.
mixflip 1 day ago
@strakill I own a Maverick 88 and it is basically a clone of a Mossberg 500, I have not had a single problem with mine, its a nice shotgun for the money.

Like having a meal at Wolfgang's vs McDonald's.

Thank you for mentioning the thumb catching feature of the spring loaded elevators. I have come back from many dove hunts with a bloody thumb from quick reloading. Love Mossberg's elevator.
mememe123xyz 1 week ago
@mememe123xyz We have Remingtons at work and I have had my thumb get snagged on the shell elevator a couple times. No blood but it still sucked and slowed me down a second or so. Sometimes a second can be life & death in a gunfight. I now run a Mossberg 500 as my primary home defense shotgun. Its old simple and plain... but its the best fit for me.

great gun, i personally use either the mossberg, 500 or the remington 870... but your gun is cool it's a good lil gun you have, i just paid a lil more because i dont like the plastic stuff.. the heat shield should not be plastic that makes zero sense but the main thing is u do have a nice gun at a bargain $ u did good for 199$ but if it was a combat Military or police. situation the mossberg 500 is the way to go or the 870 remington.. both great guns
shootload1911 2 weeks ago
Remington 870 Express, best home defense gun. I use mine for Defense all the time. I bought a $199 Maverick myself but soon found that it wasn't worth the $199 price (which was a very high price for what its worth by the way) and ended up throwing down $350 for an 870 12 gauge with an extended tube.
Intoxiqated 3 weeks ago
@Intoxiqated I have long since sold this shotgun. It served its purpose and it never once failed me. Im sad to hear yours didnt? I like Remingtons, we use them at work (Im a cop) but I used Mossbergs when I was attached to the Marines and I have been a big fan of Mossbergs dual extractors and tang safety and slide release behind the trigger guard for 2 decades. I always say, get what works for you. There is no one perfect gun for every person.
mixflip 3 weeks ago
@mixflip Hi mixflip,
Glad to see a fellow Marine, I've also used many Mossbergs and Remingtons alike and I couldn't agree more with you that its all about personal preference.

I feel more at home at Camp Pendleton,MCB Kaneohe and Camp Hansen than any Navy base. lol.
mixflip 2 weeks ago
you got a great price, 199$ is cheap! however if your doing military operations the mossberg 500 is a much more relaible/and prooven system due to the lack of plastic parts. also the 500/ is MIL-SPEC rated.. and so it's worth the extra$ however for home defense like your using it for.. your good to go ,man.. great purchase..

Ninjaculation 1 month ago
@Ninjaculation Your best bet is to go online to a specialty ammo site and buy beanbag rounds. You won't kill your opponent and theres no way that you can cause any collateral damage (unless a loud gunshot counts). I myself live in a building where my front door doesn't have anybody behind it so I don't have to worry about killing anyone but the guy in my house.
Intoxiqated 3 weeks ago
Lose the K-mart ranger crap - heat shield, ammo rack, sling. Keep the light because that's okay. A sling is for field carrying - it's "home defense" remember - just something else to snag on things. If you are right handed, a shell holder on the left side of the reciever will just snag against your stomach/shirt. Heat shield - Pffft! Who needs sights for buckshot at close range. A shell holder on the right side of the buttstock so it's not rubbing against you is more practical.
redlegagent 1 month ago
@redlegagent I agree 100%. Truth be told I sold this shotgun over a year ago. I bought the heat shield for shits & giggles and hated the plastic GRS. They were non adjustable and as you mentioned absolutely useless for indoor work. The heat shield actually was usefull for grating cheese lol. My current home defense shotgun is a plane jane Mossberg 500 with no sling no nothing. I want a white light but Im waiting for a specific fore end I saw at shot show to test & evaluate.

bigwillyalex 1 month ago
Hand guns are alot better for going around corners, but depending on which you have, won't pack a big of a punch like a good ol' shotgun. Another good reason to have a shotgun (especially pump) is the invader will most likely HEAR the pump and be like "Oh shit"
TheMagicBoy891 1 month ago
So, for $199 you can buy a shotgun ? Sometimes I really wonder "wtf america".
TheSaiyanKing 1 month ago
@TheSaiyanKing Its called the 2nd Amendment - the right to bare arms. How else do you enable citizens to defend themselves against tyranny and dictatorship. Look at Switzerland. They have a 90% citizen firearms ownership percentage. How do you planto stop a thug doing a home invasion? Harsh language? Call 911 and wait an hour for the police to show up? I have a wife and 2 kids to protect. Have you seen what a drug addict is capable of when they get desperate?
mixflip 1 month ago
@mixflip The thing that surprises me is that a gun is so cheap.
TheSaiyanKing 1 month ago
@TheSaiyanKing Guns in general are not expensive if you can afford a few hundred dollars. A pump shotgun is low tech. A used Glock can be bought for $400. An old military surplus SKS rifle can be bought for $300. An old Mosin Nagant bolt action Army surplus rifle can be bought for $100. Guns are not expensive at all. I guess where guns are restricted they cost alot more?
mixflip 1 month ago
@mixflip Well, we dont actually know how much they cost, since fire arms are restricted. The only people who can own them are hunters, police, people in the army and some politicians. And for protection, we usually have baseball bats or swords.
TheSaiyanKing 1 month ago
@TheSaiyanKing Just pretend you are a hunter. Buy a gun. And if you ever need to defend your family against bad people who want to do you harm... at least you will have a fighting chance. I'd rather have a gun vs a stick or a knife any day.
mixflip 1 month ago
@mixflip Well Switzerland has a 90% citizen firearms ownership because those people are in the Swiss army. They are not just armed civilians, but I can see your point; although Switzerland being so small is kind of unique, as there is less chance of being robbed in comparison to a large country like the US. I never quite understood the 2nd Amendament until now, in fact I wish my country had it, because nothing says freedom like having the power to fight injustice on your own.
payback88 1 month ago
@payback88 Im glad you understand a bit more now. We Americans have constitutional rights. The 1st is the right to freedom of speech. Guess what right was invented over 200 years ago by the colonists who fought back against British tyranny? Yes the 2nd right is to bare arms. What a great concept. Its not a perfect country but its one of the better ones out there for sure. There must be a reason why thousands of immigrants come here every year? Freedom is something worth fighting for.

1john1992 2 months ago
@1john1992 Shotguns have their strengths & weakness's just like handguns and rifles have strengths & weakness's. No gun is perfect for every scenario and every shooter. AS for shotguns being overkill? Maybe? Maybe not?I guess if the bad guy is a tiny 98lb crack head wearing a T-shirt & shorts and a Swiss army knife it could be overkill? But if he is a 250lb gang member wearing a leather jacket and high on meth looking for money for his drug habit then maybe its not overkill?

How's this gun held up for you? I've heard the 590's are awesome but really mixed stuff about the 500's; especially the barrels.
DanielJosephTV 2 months ago
@DanielJosephTV What have you heard about the barrels?
mixflip 2 months ago
@mixflip I've heard the barrels on a 500 are not as thick and have a lower proofing than a 590 or a Remington 870 and for people who do a lot of shooting the barrel is more likely to wear out on a 500, the thought being the thinner barrel will heat up quicker, and fail sooner; where as the other 2 firearms should last much longer. Just something I heard & I was curious how your mileage had been.

Thats how the UK should look at guns.
mixflip 2 months ago
@mixflip While I believe Britain went to far in gun control. I do believe we need more unified gun legislation. My coworker just bought an AR-15 from a private seller at a gun show and I know he's got a serious record including beating the crap out of his girl friend. Not everyone in this country should be allowed to own a firearm.
Daikenhunter 2 months ago
@Daikenhunter I agree. Not everyone should have guns. Only citizens with clean records and no history of violence or mental disorders should be allowed to buy guns. Unfortunately a face to face sale does not require a background check which is a huge weak point in the laws here. Sounds like you have the same problem in the UK.
mixflip 2 months ago
@mixflip I hope a guy with a bogus domestic violence charge saves your life one day when the shit hits the fan. Maybe then, you'll comprehend how ignorant your argument is. You don't have to have laid a finger on someone to be changed with domestic violence. The Nanny States want everyone to suck their thumb and depend on a knight in shinning armor or a cop to save them. Cops and military can kill you or torture you to death without telling anyone because they "think" you did sometin.
wwe107 2 months ago
@wwe107 So wait a minute. Every person who has a domestic violence charge is "bogus"? If anyone has an ignorant argument its you. I also never said the police or military will come to anyones rescue.
Jasper50 3 months ago
will this take mossberg 500 parts?
WolfPackAttack1911 3 months ago
@WolfPackAttack1911 Yes probably about 99% of the 500 will fit on this gun other than the trigger housing since the 500 uses a tang safety and the 88 uses a cross pin.

Cheap, reliable, simple, intimidating and effective... nice set up!
I really think the light is a must. You need to know what you're about to kill!
I also think the full shoulder stock is good idea for aiming and control not so much as a thumping weapon... you can do that with the muzzle!
jimrbsn 3 months ago
@jimrbsn Very good points and I agree with you 100%. You see young guys wanting to put pistol grips (no stock) or folding stocks but I think a solid stock is much better for accuracy and control. Your right, thumping and gouging can be done with the muzzle alot faster than turning the gun around for a buttstroke but I like the buttstroke option for sure.

i am on the market for a home defence weapon and the maverick is among one of my choises. second choise is a benelli nova slug. abotu the video, very mature, reasonable with good arguements but a small question. since you are also talking melee (quote: buttstroking) would you consider adding a mini bayonet on the picatinny tri-rail you chose. if not plz explain. ty in advance
togashigr11 3 months ago
@togashigr11 I think its all a matter of preference. If you think you could benefit from a bayonet? Then yes it is a good idea. People love to accessorize their guns with useless parts that just make the gun heavy and clumsy. The only time I like to ad things to my gun is if it serve a specific purpose. If it isnt useful then I take it off.

Good review and hella good Shotgun,, i've chosen this one to be my HD, but the only thing is that i'm still wondrin' 'bout the way it would act with 3" slug and would it?
thesabrix 3 months ago
@thesabrix I wouldnt use 3" slugs for home defense unless you are worried about bears doing a home invasion? 00-buck is borderline overkill but as I said before...use what you feel comfortable with. I use 00-buck or buck & ball just to have the shot spread and stopping power.
mixflip 3 months ago
i had a 835 shotgun growing up and shit even hunting i used 3 1/2 in rounds was one hell of a powerhouse for a shotgun.

How does it shoot? does it jam at all?
NemanorTheAlmighty 4 months ago
@NemanorTheAlmighty I actually sold this shotgun last year but it ran 100% flawless when I had it. Most malfunctions with pump shotguns are from "short stroking" the action which is the shooters fault and not the guns. The 88 is based off the legendary Mossberg 500 so its really hard to mess up a classic design like that.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip wow u sold that dammm wish i knew....do u remember the price of the buck shot???
wisdom777ification 3 months ago
@wisdom777ification I sold it to buy a better shotgun. I dont remember the price of the buck & ball but its kinda expensive for sure. Any high quality defensive ammo will be more expensive than cheap target ammo. Probably $10 to $15 just for a box of 5 I'd bet? Defensive ammo rarely get shot so the manufacturers need to make as much money they can off ammo that doesnt get shot much.

Very informative video! One question...I keep hearing that plastic parts on a shotgun are prone to breaking from the impact of recoil. Is that just an exaggerated claim?
pcgamerjoe 4 months ago
@pcgamerjoe Thats true. In fact I do not recommend the ghost ring sights that you see in this video. They are cheap plastic and they are non-adjustable so they are basically useless and just there for looks. I actually bought the heat guard and the sights just came attached to it. If you are going to get ghost ring sights, then get high quality metal adjustable sights that actually screw onto the receiver or onto a rail. Thanks for watching.

cool heat shield. where do i pick one of those up.
jokerxxx74 4 months ago
@jokerxxx74 Pretty much any gun shop should have them or you can check out midwayUSA or brownells or cheaperthandirt.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip thanks. i found one on @ cheaper than dirt.
jokerxxx74 4 months ago
The gun in the safe thing... I can't explain in words how much I'm against that. If someone breaks into your home, will you have time to get to your safe and retrieve your weapon? Whatever you choose to do is your business, but having a firearm within arm's reach in the event of a break-in is an invaluable source of comfort to me. Being ready at a moment's notice is likely to be critical in such an event.
TJ347 4 months ago

CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu Just curious, have you ever taken a defensive firearms class? No offense but just because you have a light doesnt mean you have to keep it on. You can "flash" to identify which could also stun and temporarily blind and disorient a person who looks directly into a white light who has been in the dark for hours. Get off the X and shoot. Also you may not be near a switch or can find the controller. Theres an old saying KISS. Keep it simple stupid. (im not calling you personally stupid)
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip :) A light on your gun gives the Bad Guy a point to shoot at ,PLUS, everytime you use that light ,you are pointing a loaded gun at EVERYTHING and EVERYONE!
HerbWalker 4 months ago
@HerbWalker You hear a strange sound like someone is climbing in a back window at 3am. You're groggy and crusty eyed and you creep over to the sound in the dark to investigate. You clear the corner and see an open window and a dark figure fumbling in the dark so you just start shooting without identifying/knowing your target. You turn the light on and its your teenage son who snuck out to go to a party who is drunk...and is now dead. Its one of the golden rules.Identify your target.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip
I am a retired police officer & no one used flashlights more than me & it's a myth that they "stun" or "blind" bad guys.
We don't always prioritize checking flashlight batteries on a regular basis & left sitting for awhile they are often dead when we need them. My house never gets pitch black because in all the rooms there are computer lights, DVD player lights, night lights, or dim light from outside that lights up everything enough to identify someone & the power never goes out
CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu So what works for you is what everybody should do? White lights, if used properly can be much more of a strength rather than a weakness. Its all a matter of training. I find it hard to believe as a cop you never worked swing or grave shift with no white light because it gave your position away? Didnt you use your take downs to blind the driver as you walked up to the car? Yes it does blind people.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip
You keep missing the point entirely...
CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu Well it looks like we are at an impasse. My way works for me and your way works for you. I am not going to change your mind and you will not change mine. The difference is that I dont have to use my light if I dont need to. And if the fight spreads to areas that your controller doesnt work... well you see where I am going with this I hope? Also, during hurricane Katrina power was out for days. Home invaders love power outages. I think you are the one missing the point. Good luck brother
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip
CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu No no no...again you are missing the point. I mentioned Katrina because the power went out for several days. Gangs of home invades was not the point. The electricity was. The point is that you may not have the luxury of electricity for your trusty little light controller. Will the average home owner ever wire his house to tactically control the lighting specifically to have an edge in a home invasion? No ,its just not practical. But buying a light for you gun is very practical.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip
CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu There is no problem here. The only problem I see is that you are starting to become disrespectful and insulting when I never took it there. Its clear what type of person I am dealing with now. Insult me again on my own channel and I will block you and delete your comments. If you want to talk guns and tactics...you are welcome to have your opinion but disrespect is childish. Youre a retired cop? Im getting the vibe that you might not be.
mixflip 4 months ago
@mixflip
Good luck.
CaneFu 4 months ago
@CaneFu Very mature. Playing Army? Did you serve our country? I did my 6 years. The Fleet Marine Force 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade is definitely not playing Army lol. You want to be blocked? Ok buddy you got it. Good luck to you and your light controller technique.

@CaneFu
Just reading the comment about securing doors and windows, Come to my house and I'll show you how easy it was for the buglers to break a safety glass sliding door (they all have safety glass BTW,) All it took was a spring loaded center-punch. They didn't even try to jimmy the door. I have an alarm system with very loud sirens, which probably made their stay a hasty one.
capkarl2 3 months ago
@CaneFu Is it a myth? Because after my eyes have in the dark, even a medium-range flashlight (not a flashlight expert) can blind me for 3-4 seconds.
