  • Mahalia owned this song for Jesus.

  • OMG this is one of my favorite scenes, Everytime I watch Immitation of Life I cry my eyes out, from the deathbed scenes to the funeral scene to the part when Sarah Jane chases after the horse drawn hearse and cries over her mother's coffin. Lana Turner Juanita Moore, Susie Kohner and Sandra Dee were so good.

  • Oh yeah, my giess is dislike could be that they were crying found out they do have love in there souls. COMPASSION IS DEEP! IF YOU HAVE IT THERE IS NO CONTROLING IT!

  • when i was a child i cried, only this time now that im grown this movie even means much more to me now! mothers, people mean so much. this movie is touching now that mostly everyone in it died and had their own funeral service. I can only pray. Im crying for everyone then and now. may we all be with the lambs and not the goats! Trouble is in this world. have mercy Lord.?

  • Why would 22 people come here to dislike? WEIRD...

  • The first time I watched this movie...I said who is cutting onions. Damn good movie and its shame that its topic is still relevant today.

  • One of the greatest movies ever made .

  • one of the best i just ould look at this movie when ever i could

  • @Lawkimnl at 2:01 it's "not with the goats on Judgement Day". Thanks for posting

  • LOVED this film I saw it as a little girl even then I understood. This film mad me ball in tears. I said I dont want to ever treat my mother that way

  • This film DeVaStAtEd me when I was 12 years 'old' and I'm Still ShAtTeReD eMoTiOnaLLy by it, as I Can ReLaTe, only the Roles are still ReVeRsEd between me and my 'Mother' who Still REJECTS me as "NOTHING BUT a 'FaiLuRe noT the GODDAMNED ALCOHOLIC she BLAMED my Father for her 'father' and 'mother' whose Culture & ExPeRiEnCeS in their 'lives' were More CRUEL & HeArTbReAkInG than ANY of these Films have EVER 'captured'.

  • @JBME Keep ya head up!!!

  • Great movie!

  • I cried so much on this movie that I couldn't breathe. Especially on this part.

  • Comment removed

  • As soon as annie starts saying her last words I'm down for but when sarah jane busts through the crowds my tears start

  • Lana was a natural actress....she was discovered for her looks at Shwabs but she became famous for her acting skills.

  • I saw it yesterday for the first time....yes, it brought tears to my eyes. Being black, and light like her, it made me think about how short life is, and how I wish had known my own mother. She died when I was 5 years old.

  • one of my fav films- it actually deals with complex issues especially for the time it was made

  • See, Sara Jane you should have loved your mom while she lived, she was always good to you, and you had no respect...It shouldn't matter what color your mom is your mom is your mom and that's all is to it!!! If my mom reads this, Mother you are my best friend forever!

  • u cried hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • beautiful voice

  • This movie made me cry!! And I was still crying when it ended!! Annie was my favorite and when she died in this movie I cried like a little kid.

  • when i first saw this movie i just wanted 2 whoop sarah janes ass u only have one mother when she's gone u can't get another one

  • it's interesting. I thought I truely hated my family until I almost lost them all. it's easy to forget how temporary life is and how permanent death is. it puts a lot of things in perspective for me and if the God is willing I'll be able to help someone before they make the mistakes I've made.

  • Lord forgive me for coveting another persons gift, hotdang if I could sing like Mahalia, i probably wouldn't stop singing EVER. I'd sing at church, job interviews, in my sleep, at the store, at the drycleaners....

  • @TXejas19 You ain't never lied. Chile me too. But his word do sing "make a joyful noise" so that's what I think of when I sing. LOL

  • @Valaneice yea but my joyful noise is loud, strong, and wrong. every now and than I can harmonize with others

  • ...... THAT'S WHAT MIS OBAMA WAS TALKING ABOUT BACK WHEN SHE SAY THAT STUFF ABOUT BEING NOT ALL THAT HAPPY WITH OLD AMERICA " IT MADE PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THAT YOUNG GIRL IF YOU WERE BLACK BACK THEN " NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BE BLACK " IF SHE JUST STAY AROUND 50 MORE YEARS IT GOT A HELL OF A LOT BETTER " HAHAHA "

  • u be surprised who wanna be white, people and society kills me with not accpeting who they really are in life, always wanna make it seem like the black side is bad, but get accepted most by the blacks who support them. be proud of u who u r not matter wut race u r.

  • powerful. Fantasia's going to mess up all they hymns, songs, etc with her lackluster bellowing. The devil is a liar, Tasia.

  • @pointhimout hahahahah

  • Mahalia sings....and I'm done. Blacks endured a WHOLE hell of a lot and I'm grateful that I live in this time. I thank you.

  • for tha 20 folks that don't like this.....has no god in them..sorry..this was tha best part of tha movie...a soild CLASSIC

  • My all time all time fav! Mahalia sang it no auto tune no background singers no remix just talent.

  • Man, Mahalia Jackson had one stong voice.

  • That lady was paid..she had alot to leave...

  • One of my all time faves in mem of ma mother....with love

  • Love this movie! First saw it when I was 8 and at 23 it still make me cry. When Annie's on her death bed I start to tear-up. But when the great Mahalia Jackson starts sangin' and Sarah Jane shows up at the end, I'm like a waterfall. The performances in this film are simply amazing. Just wondering, is that Florida from Good Times at 7:58? Anyway do this day this is the only movie that can make this grown man cry.

  • I really felt the white horses and "celebration of life" was out of her character..

  • @icecold99 Ms Jackson was a native New Orleanian... raised in Carrolton (Uptown New Orleans) and the horse drawn carriage and second line funeral procession for the character Annie was Ms Jackson's contribution and tribute to her upbringing in the Mount Mariah Baptist church.

  • One of my FAVE movies of all time. I saw this for the first time at a drive in back in the late 60s. It made such an impression on me then, and still does.

  • Este filme marcou muito a minha infância e nunca mais esqueci-o, poderia reprisá-lo na televisão, é uma lição de vida, muito forte.

  • Loved

  • Foolish child never understood how much her mama lives her

  • When I was young they called it passing..or High Yellow I was lucky enough to grow up in the inner city..I grew up with the Brothers and Sisters..I never knew their pain..but I observed it..The White world was very cruel in the 50's and 60's to African Americans..I don't believe the light skined Blacks today try to "Pass" like they did then..All blacks bi-racial or otherwise , I believe are proud of their heritage..

  • Nothing but tears everytime I watch this scene and hear this song

  • i dont know if i should be mad at you or happy you put this up lol just kidding i mean this story impacts so many folks and i cry every time it is played i have 4 mix kids and they want to watch this at least once a year with daddy i dont know if it is because they see daddy cry on this part or what but i dont care because it is our time even though they are growen

  • My favorite movie- a tearjerker. Lessons to be learned from this movie. Should be viewed by children today-those who mistreat & disrespect their parents. Sad when Annie passed, Sarah J was not by her side or @ the funeral. It was too late for her to tell her mom how she felt. Let people know how you feel while the blood still runs warm in their bodies. Once gone, they can't hear you. Happens a lot.

  • I LOVE IT!!! This is one of my favorite movies and this song is one of my all time favs!!!

  • When Ms Laura screamed "Annie" @ 3:16 I broke into tears too felt like i was right there.

  • I make it through this movie...until Sarah Jane runs to the coach....that does me in every time.

  • @srdale56

    You said it.

    Same here.

  • @srdale56 It does me in every time too, and my sister and cousins as well.

  • Im so sick of people saying the daughter was selfish, maybe she was in some ways but you all dont understand what its like, to be able to pass for white and or black. I felt bad for the daughter

  • Yeah, but there's never an excuse to mistreat your mom, regardless of how cruel the world is. If she had NO ONE else....she had her mother. There was one scene in the movie where the girl told her white friends, who again...only "liked" her because they thought she was white too, that her black mother was her MAMMY. Then in another scene, the white boyfriend finds out her mom is black and he says, "Is it true that your mother is a nigger?" She chose WHITE over doing the right thing.

  • @Armaniwazhere Y? All Sarah Jane wanted in life was to be white and work in seedy dives like Harry's place. Just because she let society teach her to loath being black was no cause to treat her gentle mom that way or show ungratefulness to Lora. Feel sorry 4 her? She lived in a beautiful house and had lovely things and wonderful people in her life but all she wanted was freedom to be some little while ho.

  • Presidential Brother-In-Law Billy Carter said, "We all left a nigger in the woodpile someplace". He just meant don't ban Nigger Jim from The Great American Novel Huckleberry Finn. Like Laura Bush, Billy Carter was A Great Librarian. Billy Beer was just his front to hide his love of Great Literature. And the rappers sing the word "nigger" all the time to honor Nigger Jim, The Greatest Liturgical Literature Black Hero EVER. KKK Honky's turned nigger into a Slur Word to ban black hero Nigger Jim.

  • Greatest pain for any human is regret ... we are only here for a short time ..dont take loved ones for granted ......

  • One of the very few REMAKES that are better than the original...

    *grabs tissue*

  • It´s because there´s one race ,human race

  • The bigger story that so many miss...is this woman had to die before not only her daughter realized she loved her, but these people that thought of her as the housekeeper realized she was a real human, a friend.

  • @tonybklyn, nah, you're not the only one that sees it. I often wondered how Laura got by without her. Besides Sarah Jane, I also feel the sorriest for Susie. She lost her second mother when Annie died. I thought that was so sweet that Mr. McKenny(the milk man) came to her funeral.

  • BEST MOVIE EVER MADE HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Get your life right and realize what's most important! Darn you youtube! Making me cry! This movie gets me every time... even after seeing it a million times!

  • @b2223967 I feel the same way...every time I watch this...

  • @msDarkblade I always cry when the funeral scene and when Annie goes to see her daughter and is rejected.

  • Yeah this is my favorite movie. Times haven't changed much in regards of racial harmony.

  • Yes you killed her you selfish child.

  • I've seen this move many times. I'm able to almost always make it past these scenes without kleenex. But that last scene when her daugther shows up gets me everytime.

  • I love love love this movie I can honestly say I have never cried on this movie. My mother does enough crying for both of us! just incrediable you know you special when you have Queen Mahalia sangin' at your funeral! Also I just want to give a shout out to Mr. Steve!!!! Too Fine Mr. Steve!

  • I cried so hard on this part

  • I love this movie! The absolute best movie ever made!!

  • My favorite movie all time. I still cry for Annie to this day. This song played at my step-dad's funeral. Mahalia is a powerhouse!! Thanks for sharing.

  • Man,this reminds me of my Grandmother,I loved her alot !!!

  • Man,this reminds me of my Grandmother,I loved her alot

  • One of the best movies that I have ever seen. I cried to think that this lady died without her daughter by her side. I watch each time like it is my first time. Every child needs to see this movie to be more thankful.

  • Every time I watch this movie I think about my mom being inside that coffin, I can't stop crying.

    Great Movie.

  • i am 31 years old...and i still cry everytime Mahalia Jackson sings this song...and everytime i watched this....i call my mom and tell her i love her.

  • My mother loved this movie..........I think about her every time I watch this.

  • I watched this with my mother, and I remember crying and thinking of how awful it would be if she passed away. Well, I just found out, its pretty awful. RIP Mom.

  • @faithpatriot May God be with u & ur family

  • @faithpatriot Yes, it is indeed awful. You'll be alright in time.

  • the prt that made me cry was when her daughter was on the flowers crying telling her mama she was sorry I CRIED RIGHT THERE

  • ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES!!! THEME, MSG...ALL STILL VERY RELEVANT EVEN IN TODAY'S SOCIETY. MAHALIA GAVE ME CHILLS WHEN SHE SANG...

  • I love this movie. My mom first showed me this when I was 11 years old and it's become my favorite. This scene always brings me to tears and I even sang "Troubles of the World" at my grandma's funeral. I'm no Mahalia Jackson but it touched my soul. I never sang like that before in my life

  • whats the name of the tune being played at 7:37

  • Well you got what you wanted you ungrateful THING!

  • whats the name of the movie?

  • @1skenderbeu Imitation of life

  • Raneek, yes it iwas a matter of survival for African Americans back then to take advantage of the fact if they can pass for white. nHowever, was it worth losing her mother? The daughter clearly paid the price, she didnt end up as a secretary at a law firm, her mother found her dancing at a showgirl (now its stripper) place. It is sad that the issue of color was what divided this mother and daughter and the daughter (brat as she is) had to find out in the end.

  • no the child was trying to find an easy way to deal with her being black because back then she could pass as white the story is an unfortunate hardship of what had to be dealt with back then if your just watching the clip and not the movie your not really seeing what her mom had to go thru with her in a time when been black was so hard when to be told your dirty nasty and whatever else they said in them days the movie is touching and it hit's so many issues of how things were

  • One of my all time faorites.

  • Wow! didn't expect to be effected. Now I'll have to see the movie, well after I buy a box of tissues first. Beautiful song.

  • WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS SONG?

  • @MZCLASS2012 Trouble of the World

  • i can't watch certain movie's without cying is this is the #1 movie!!!1

  • im 13 years old &nd this movie makes me cry , i cant help but cry , i cant imagin a child doing that to there mother like she did !!

  • mahalia jackson touches my soul

Gracia Superciro

  • A lot of people are confused and think that Sarah Jane is biracial/mixed. If you watch the movie, she is not. Her father was a lightskinned black man. Sarah Jane took after his color. This occurs in the black race--sometimes lightskinned black people look whiter than biracial people.

  • I remember seeing this when I was in elementary, and I am only 25. This was one of the movies that my mother made me watch. At the end, I started crying. I think that all thecharacters played their role well especially tha actress who played Lora and Sarah. Classic. Love it

  • THUMBS UP FOR MISS MAHALIA JACKSON!!!!!

  • I don't cry easily, but the funeral scene when Sara Jane runs to the hearse and throws herself on the casket, my eyes filled with tears.

  • This is one of the best movies ever made and it speaks volumes even today with the whole complexion thing in the black community. But it amazes me how in one black family mine included, you can have skin tones ranging from fair to dark.

  • @qbbowles It's not that amazing. It just is, and people are overly fascinated by it. No different than how two blonde haired white people can have a dark headed child.

  • @qbbowles

thats because african americans were mixed from slavery and inter-marrying even before then! In my family it is prevelent....most of the brown women have lighter skinned children and a few even look white. All of the older light skinned women married brown or dark. They did this to balance the color but....didnt work! All peoples of the world originated from Africa any how....this is no NEW news.....God Bless!

  • @qbbowles When I was little, I thought 'colored' meant blue or green or something cool like that. When I heard the other kids saying the neighbors had a 'colored' maid I wanted someone to borrow a polaroid for me so I could have a picture taken. I was so disappointed to find that it wasn't like that. I realize, when you look at the whole color wheel, all human colorings only occur in a very small section of it, basically we are all shades of the same color.

  • Trouble of the world

  • What is the name of this song?

  • no matter how good a picture or actors is in it,some1 will always hate it. i first seen this when i was real young it made me cry, even when my teacher show this to us when i became a teenage in school (robert e lee high)it made the whole class cry..boys 2.ms.jackson has an orignal voice cant be touch

  • I love this movie. My mom turned me on to this movie. My mom is gone home to be with Jesus. I'm so glad I loved my mom. RIP mom. This movies bring back memories

  • @nathan777100 God Bless your mom. I lost a brother twenty five years ago and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. Thank God for the time that we spent with our loved ones. God Bless them.

  • Love this movie! Show love before it's too late

  • carolyn wilder

  • I love this movie..watched it as a kid..and to this day,I still can't stand the character Sarah Jane..she was a ungrateful birch that didn't deserve a mom like Annie.. one of my all time favorites..

  • Everytime, I see this movie I cry. I saw it first about 25 years ago and it has the same effect everytime. I always have a hard time getting myself together after hearing Mrs. Jackson sings. thanks for posting :-)

  • my grandmother sat me donw and made me watch this movie one day when it came on tv....i could not turn away. from the first scene i was hooked. she told me when she was in a bording school the nuns took them to watch this. and she told me during intermission that men & women were crying, sobbing. i lost my grandmother 17 years ago. this will always be one of my favorite movies. i am grateful to have ha the chance to watch it with her. i wanted to name my daughter mahalia...

  • So much crying over this song sung in a movie. When you have heard this song many times at the funeral of a family member, friend, loved one.. It runs chills thru your spine and you feel the pain at a level so intense.. You enter another level spiritual understanding the fragility of life and how much we take it for granted. You hear the screams of weeping, wailing and grief around you. It is a humbling experience. Knowing that one day, they will sing the same song for you.

  • Hollywood seldom re-makes movies that are better than the originals, but the Mexican version "Flores para mi Madre" (Flowers for my Mother) which is as strong and powerful as "Imitation of Life" could not evoke the same emotional onrush that you get when you hear Ms Mahalia Jackson sing. WOWWWW. This is one of the most underated films in history

  • I had never heard of that movie before and I watched it for the first time easily 20 years ago I was ill and just expected to be mildly entertained, I got hooked from the beginning, I watched it with baited breath not knowing what the end was going to be. I exploded into tears when she dies and thought I was never going to recover when Mahalia started singing. This movie is curiously restrained beautifully acted and incredibly real and moving, it touches on to something we all have in common

  • This movie is makes me want to call my mom and apologize for everything. And I was a good kid! Mahalia brings to my eyes.

  • This movie is makes me want to call my mom and apologize for everything. And I was a good kid! Mahalia brings to my eyes.

  • No matter how many times I see this movie or hear Mahalia Jackson sing this song, I immediately fill up with so many emotions. I cry so hard that it feels like I am right there. Whenever I feeling low, I come to Mahalia 2 be spiritually fed. The words of this song is so powerful, but true. With so much hostility in the world, you can't help but to worry about your children and parents. This will definitely be a song that must be sung or played when I am laid to rest.

  • Thank you for posting. You realize of course that the woman who was 'Annie' in the film is still alive? As well as that very handsome 'Mr. Steve'. I have seen this movie a million times and it still makes me cry. I love this movie, even the 'original' still makes me cry. From what I understand in 1957 grown men cried in PUBLIC when they saw this movie...Maybe they had a crush on Mr Steve too.

  • sadly they dont make them like this any more

  • Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Like my dother!

when I was young, I cried every time when I sow this film. Unfortunatelly, today I'm living life with same dother and cry.

  • Mahalia Jackson will forever be my number one idol in gospel music. When I was a little girl i was always amazed at her powerful voice.

  • THIS SHOWS YOU GOT TO BE CAREFUL HOW YOU TREAT PEOPLE ON EARTH

  • LOVE THIS MOVIE! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! WISH THEY PLAYED IT OFTEN...

  • Dignity, empowered with Love, outshines all arguments to the contrary. Thinking of Gil Scott-Heron's passing. RIP all loving hearts.

  • this is one of the most saddest movie i saw. that girl was an ungrateful bitch.

  • This is the most moving scene in a movie that I've ever seen!

  • Beautiful, God have mercy on all of us.

  • That child was one bad bastard, hateful and selfish made her mummy grieved to death. There are still many of those ungrateful ones around. May God help them. Honor thy mother and father

  • @amredeem1 I may be seeing the film from the perspective of the 21st century; but wasn't part of the subtext was the racism at the heart of America and how it affected the lives of black people at a fundamental level, leaving deep scar at the heart of not only individuals but the whole of black societies psyche.

  • @amredeem1

I laughed at her (the daughter) when she made a spectacle of herself, basically throwing herself at her mother's Funeral Cortege. True there are some parents, who deserve that kind of snub, the Casey Anthony parents,or callous mothers, but still, this woman loved her daughter tremendoulsy. I cried myself because that charactoer is the kind of mother every girl dreams of!

  • @amredeem1 she was i absolutely agree with you

  • epic

  • Every time I watch t his movie I find myself wishing that these people could somehow know that a half-black man would eventually be President.

  • If there was ever a movie that a person could watch to put themselves in check, this is it. If it doesn't stir up emotion and a sense of urgency to do the right thing, you're already dead inside....

  • whow! I have never heard about this movie before. I looked it up because I have to give my opinion about it for school...I'm speechless.

  • @xTheFalconx This is an awesome movie. You should watch it from beginning to end. I think there are at least two versions. It was remade. This gives a life lesson about telling someone you love them before it's too late.

  • My dad introduced this movie to me a few years back...I was in high school. After seeing this movie, I cried! I was watching it with my mom and I had one of those moments where I looked at her and said: "Mom, I love you and I'm thankful to have you in my life. I appreciate all that you do for me." My mom just smiled and laughed and gave me a hug and called me a dork. lol! This is on my top 5 list of favorite movies!

  • The best film ever in my opinion is this.

  • Even though I have this DVD I'm sitting here watching this like the first time lol

  • One of ( if not the ) best pictures ever made.If I ever feel I need a good cry, I just watch this! Words fail me to describe its magnificence.

  • I know many people like Sarah Jane - ashamed of what they are, buying into the belief system that being who they are is not good enough.

Pretending that they are something else.

    Sad but true

  • one of my favorite movies. I cry everytime.

  • I love this ending. My mother never loved me. She was always angry and cruel. She hit me all the time. She liked Mahalia Jackson until the day I started liking her too. Than she threw out her LPs. So these two loving mothers are the opposite of what I've had.

  • @wattever333 that is so sad!

  • Classic

  • Dedicated to those who are holding on to Gods unchanging hand..... and never grow tired of praising Him and thanking Him for His amazing Grace and His Lovingkindness, and His Mercy that endures forever. Selah.

  • Over 50 years old, but still as powerful as the day it was release......

  • This is my favorite movie of all time. I watched it as a child.. I had difficulties with my mother being so much older than the other kids moms. Also, she was premature gray and I felt ostersized by the kids. This movie helped me to be able to seperate my feelings from reality. Because even though my mother and I had lots of trouble getting along, I always "knew" I loved her.

Yes! When Sara Jane throws herself on the coffin it is the perfect ending to this movie in more ways than one.

  • I think about my mother am how she cried everytime she saw this movie.

  • I cry everytime I watch this movie, my boyfriend cry 2.............so touching

  • beautifully told! epic

  • THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE.I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE MAHALIA JACKSON,SHE WAS TRULY BLESSED AND GIFTED.PRAISE YAHWEH <3

  • Every time I watch this movie with my mom and sisters we ALWAYS cry...thats how good and powerful it is!

  • Was that actress who played Sara Jane Biracial ? She looks white to me !

  • tear jerker@IT'S BEST
