  • I've never seen Jeff so talkative and friendly as he is in this video...I don't think he's like that anymore...he seems to really avoid any kind of media attention these days. What happened?

  • brilliant musician..rock on

  • Roy seams like a nice guy but Jeff Lynne wrote all the good songs in The Idle Race that is why ELO,s music is still relevent today <3

  • I miss hair............ : (

  • Roy Wood = class act + brilliant musican

  • great muscian having him and jeff lynne both unique voices and great muscianship.......

  • @bluepowder2008

    and lots of hair.

  • a great guy roy wood one of my favourite singers and the move a great 60s band

  • What happened with him working with the Ronettes? Did Ronnie Spector's version of Say Goodbye To Hollywood come straight after this?

  • what a totally genuine honest and nice bloke to be around. When you see some of the diva up ya arse talentless tossers that are around now you want people like this back on the road to give you some hope.

  • Put simply, this is the best pop composer that England has ever produced!

  • he looks alot like he could be Biffy Clyro's Dad...

  • PogoFogo, what do you mean, one hit wonder? Between The Move, his solo work, and his work with Wizzard, Roy Wood has had considerably more than one hit.

  • @Markinks1

Wish I'd written 'Wish it could be Christmas...." I'd never have to work again.

  • 2 genius "s Brian wilson and Roy wood . full stop

  • Does anyone know what songs Roy wrote or sent to Elvis Presley?

  • @PogoFogo Duh! Do your research!

  • neil sedaka-jeez,you had a lucky escape there Roy-neil sedaka's an irritating,smug,ugly little twat.

  • @DrZeppo So DrZ, not a Neil Sedaka fan then?

  • Well spotted sir !

  • he made a good album with his Band "Wizzo"

    Roy is music!

  • Very thankful for the 1/100 sec timer display.

Really helped me to understand Roy's comments.

  • Awsome Muscian

  • Now that's hair!

  • Roy wood is a seriously good musician.

  • There's a noticeable difference between interviews then and now. Roy seems wide-eyed and honest here, nowadays everything seems rehearsed and stage managed, with jaded stars trying to be oh so cynical and wry.

  • what a beautyful hairy guy and what a fantastic musician

  • I think Roy Wood was "too British" to have a name in USA. The Beatles and ELO were British too but they had a success to make their music more familiar to be accepted all over the world.

  • too british?

what the hell does that mean?

no band was more british than pink floyd...they were big

and name a performer more british than bowie

for the life of me, i dont get why the move, wizzard and wood never got big in the united states...its a mystery for the ages

  • Contractual issues? I believe that's one of the issues that screwed Wizzard in the UK, never mind the States. Do you have the gatefold sleeved Xmas single? Mine has WB printed on the sleeve with a Harvest sticker over it. Both companies were fighting over it as the band were signed to both labels. Allegedly!

  • i can believe it

    its always the suits

which is why the record companies are going belly up and the internet is allowing people to hear the music that they want to

  • but wmg are stopping people socialy shareing music by disableing tracks from being embeded so if you cant embed a classic you may embed a new britney spears thing (its not music)

  • I think what the poster means is too "parochially" British - and I don't mean that as an insult, but some acts were so quintessentially British, or English to be more precise, that they would never have meant a light in the US. That quirky little sense of the absurd that the likes of Stackridge possessed.

  • To be honest, I think you've hit the nail on the head. Good post.

  • its NOT a mystery americans are brain dead sheep that are stuck in one big media machine that tells them what to like the beatles were better marketed than elvis so they were no1 roy wood wasnt marketed well enough so he failed youtube is takeing power away from promotions people at reccord companies but the radio still has a big influence

  • spadge 321: What are you on about? I didn't blame punk for U2 and Radiohead!! U2 is a second rate rock band with a decent singer. Radiohead is a third rate prog rock band with an awful singer. Neither has anything to do with punk. I was talking about how stupid TV interviews with young indie bands have become compared to this thoughtful and revealing OGWT interview with Roy.

  • Just ignore spadge after all..they're just having a spaz ;)

  • saw him last easter (2008) billed as roy wood and his band. he was superb!!!!!

only plays the stuff he wrote or actually sang> no rip offs with roy.

  • Tragic really that Roy Woods Management never promoted him in the states as they did with they`re other act ELO, he would have been massive over there. A real Genius, a neglected Talent.

  • Roy Wood along with Frankie Miller two of the most genuine honest guys in rock music no bulshit diva antics two great British pro's great video, well done Bob Harris

  • Roy Wood, what a star!

  • An honest, intelligent, thoughtful rock star interview. Nowadays you get a bunch of inarticulate morons sprawled across a settee, interviewed by a floppy haired, brain dead middle-class goth type. Everyone snickers at the cleverness of knowing nothing about fuck all, and being 22 and acting like they're 16. That's the legacy of Punk.

  • read your comment on roy wood agreed with all you said up 2 the point of the legacy of punk. very unfair as roy was one of the musicians that took the music in that direction because he could see the boredom in what was happening..... i suppose thats whats known as alternative????? long live??????????? alternativness :) take care bro. from all in glasgow

  • I had no idea Roy Wood took pop/rock in the direction of Punk. I suppose I wasn't listening to chart music much by the late-1970s. How did Roy do that, what did he release that was Punkish, could you tell me?

  • bang on...punk music has got it's place, but as far as I'm concerned too many people are too infatuated with it's aesthetic these days- hence pretending to be thick, not trying, and being utterly uninterested in melodies

  • dont blame punk for arseholes like u2 and oasis and radiohead,, they simply can't play and have fuck all to say anyway,, punk was about saying what you felt and playing as if your life depended on it,, nirvana, guns and roses, beck and the replacements were real products of the spirit of punk,, dont make sweeping statements,, and Roy,, Roy was one of my eraly inspirations,,

  • @drwinkle101, well said that man, presently we have to put up with Jools Holland fawning about instead of shows like TOGWT and the enigmatic Bob Harris.

  • @Softrockman

It's worse! We have to put up with Jools plinky-plonking along with classy musicians who daren't tell him "Fuck off boogie-woogie turd" because Later is a rare TV showcase. I can't watch it because of him. And his horrible "big band" should be injected with cholera bacteria during the Christmas Show.

  • @drwinkle101 Well put!

  • Damn, he says he had two albums worth of solo stuff recorded at this point. Wonder if that's the Super Active Wizzo/On The Road Again stuff or some unreleased gems ...

  • Interesting interview. What was that about Neil Sedaka seeking out Roy as a producer? Now, I know Wood was a tuneful sort and had a thing for early rock n' roll and pop. But Sedaka? What a pair!

Anyway, it's a shame that we in American didn't give Wood the attention he deserved.

  • legend! wont see his like again?

  • Have to agree what a musical genius he is. Been following his work since early seventies. Check out his website.

  • Roy was just putting the finishing touches on the "Wizzo" album, which was finally released a few years ago as "Main Street". Gad, the Ardens really did screw Roy's career up royally. He could have been in demand producer for many American and U.K. acts at very least.

  • Another example of a genius who was thwarted by the record industry moguls.

In this interview, his voice is tinged with sadness...............................

or have I just drank too much wine?

  • Yes you have dranken to much wines

  • I like anything Roy Wood does. What a talent and a real genius! So cool, and he seems like a very nice fellow.

  • I had absolutely no idea Roy was in the Idle Race, how long for I wonder, Jeez, you learn something everyday.

  • Well, neither did I know, that Roy Wood was in the "Idle Race".

I thought, that mainly Jeff Lynne was in the "Idle Race" and Roy Wood was in the "Move".

  • Roys First band Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders eventually became The Idle Race

  • And I think the only instrument he's never played would be the kitchen sink. Sure have to give him credit for longevity and all the while playing the music he wants to play as opposed to simply crafting songs that fall right in with whatever's going on at the time.

  • Finally a full one on one interview with Roy. Hadn't seen this before. Like others have already said, what a talent. Is he still producing others these days?

  • he must have been doing his mustard album around this time

  • I love that album.

  • what a talented musician, great upload

  • he stayed in a large glasgow hotel in the eary 70s he left my husband a big tip real nice guy

  • one of the most under-rated musical talents that not enough people know about. could do it all!

  • Great to see this footage. One of pops true originals, a master craftsman at the top of his game then. Priceless.

  • Just in case you were wondering this interview w/ Roy Wood is directly following the Live Performance of Laredo Tornado. Both are in fact a one part show. Notice the host is wearing the same outfit in both videos. At the end of the Laredo performance he begins to introduce his next guest, which is Roy Wood. Great videos, what a find!!! Keep it up!!!

  • wow, what a gem! the music industry did not deserve the humble genius that is Roy Wood...after over 30 years his music still fascinates me...
