I was obsessed with this movie! I watched it a hundred times as a kid. Even drew Daryl Hannah as a mermaid at the back of my notebooks in class. Lol. This is a beautiful scene. She's so realistic and graceful!
@newbubblefire ~ Isn't she though? As kids we used to play "Aqua man" underwater..and move like him..but the way Daryl moves is so far from Aqua man, yet its the same motion...wow! I imagine after shooting she must have been so water logged (so to speak).....agrees...it is a beautiful scene.
Daryl Hannah's performance as Madison the mermaid in this scene alone- IMHO-was truly Oscar-worthy. She's the archetypal mermaid in looks, and swims so naturally and gracefully with the prosthetic tail. Now that must've been hard, LET ALONE having to also hold her breath to prevent tell-tale air bubbles escaping. Just gives me goosebumps.

My favorite part is when she is in the old galleon. I used to go to Santa Cruz and dive on old ship wrecks with some buddies of mine. the sea is like whole different world when your down there. I guess that's why I love the ocean so much.

All the stuntgirls who were supposed to double her in the swimming scenes could not swim as well as her with that thing on by far (aka swimming fast and "graceful" as she did, so much about the "easiness" of that sooo easy dolphin kick), so the film makers finally decided to allow her to do it herself. And when she swam, the security team could not keep up with her (!). And all this while holding her breath and looking like a real stunner :-D You Dumbo! ;-D

I've seen so many girls swim like a mermaid, but Daryl Hannah does it best!

it's very easy to swim like that look up dolpin kick practice then do it with out your hands in front of you
