I suspect Stanwyck had mixed feelings about this movie. It was hugely successful, but it also typecast her as a femme fatale. A few years later she was complaining in an interview that she could not get parts in good comedy films. She also had to fight to get western roles. She later said "My only problem is finding a way to play my fortieth fallen female in a different way from my thirty-ninth."
@coralarch okay normally i would agree with you except the person who beat her out for this particular performance was ingrid bergman in gaslight... and though barbara is fucking psychotically brilliant in this, bergman just wins, man.
While Baraba Stanwyck had a long and enormouskly successful acting career on stage, in movies and TV, this is her "signature" role.
And I suspect that after seeing the film, every teenage girl and young woman in the country wanted sunglasses just like the ones Ms. Stanwyck wore in this scene!
is impossible that her husband kill himself fallin down out of train 30 milles hour! why he didn't cash the indemnity when he broken the leg ? E . G Robinson SEA wolf
OUT OF THE PAST is my favorite film noir, but this is on my top five of all time best list! THE BLUE DAHLIA, LAURA, PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET complete my list. What are your favorites? Film Noir rules!
Tell me. I absolutely adore Barbara Stanwyck. There was nothing she couldn't do. She was capable of far more depth than Crawford and, unlike Davis, was a gifted comedienne.
Check out the little-known The Lady Gambles for her brilliant portrayal of a gambling addict. Seeing that made me put her in a class by herself.
Yes I know. And while Barbara has given plenty of classic performance and was very versatile, she dosen't have the same merits as Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Both Joan and Bette were class act but they didin't have Barbara's versatility.
Barbara in her most chilling portrayal of reptilian evil....superb!

Why didn't she get an Oscar for this role? 60+ years later, it still thrills!

Barbara rocks! Whoever denied her the Oscar should have been shot!

Why Stanwyck was always treated less reverently than Crawford and Davis is beyond me.Best film noir ever or maybe one of five.
