Thank you soooo much foe sharing with us! I just can't believe Ms. Lansbury was 58 (!!!) at that time! She probably still has more energy than most 20 years old. Simply Amazing!
She's almost as old as Julie Andrews was when she did Victor Victoria on stage (I know this came first) Both shows had big dance numbers for the close to 60 year olds!!!! Amazing talent!! Love Angela!!!
From the bottom of my heart thankyou for these videos. How else could those of us born in the wrong place or at the wrong time (or both) get to appreciate the glory of
She is absolutely magical. I just saw her in "A Little Night Music" about a week ago, and she was absolutely amazing. This clip is awesome- what a dancer she is! It's funny when the members of the chorus start dancing in this clip, it's like I just want them to move out of the way so that I can focus on Angela's otherworldly amazing performance.
Isn't it wonderful that all of us live in a time when Jerry Herman's music and shows were there for all of us to see! We will never see the likes of him again. He left off where Irving Berlin left off. Both Songwriters that wrote hummable songs that could be loved "always"! Ty Ty for the post!
Let's give Warner Bros. credit, at least, for cutting this number from the 1974 movie version. Can you imagine Lucille Ball trying to sing and dance to "That's How Young I Feel?" They'd have had to carry her out on a stretcher.
I say God bless the bootleggers for having the guts to videotape the shows and preserve the great performances that would be lost to history! This is the beef I have with Equity, don't they realize that shows need to be preserved???
Exactly. And this was just the revival from 1983. If only the original Lansbury production from the late 60's could have been preserved with sound and all. A close approximation of what that must have been like is her performance of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" from the Oscars in 1969, which can also be found on YouTube. Lansbury was nearly 60 in the above revival video, believe it or not.
As I've stated on other "Mame" clips, thank you so, so, SO much. Ur videos are a great treat 4 people like me who had the misfortune 2 be born 2 late to c this wonderful show and the equally wonderful Angela Lansbury in her prime! I just wonder, how on earth did u manage 2 get these recordings, it must have been difficult 2 manage an old video camera w/out being spotted in the theater! However u managed 2 get it, I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
I cannot BELIEVE that you have these videos -- I'm a HUGE Mame fan but never got the pleasure of seeing either of the broadway versions -- Your clips from the revival with AL are a TREAT!!!!!
Thanks for your comments on Angela. I was fortunate enough to see her in the original Mame, once in NYC and once in LA. She was fantastic. She is by far the greatest musical actress and the best dramatic actress also, Ernie
Truer words have never been spoken, she really was, and still is, one the greatest musical & dramatic actresses 2 grace the stage and screen. I had the fortune of seeing her brilliant performance in "Blithe Spirit" a few weeks ago, and I think she might receive a well-deserved fifth Tony for her incredible performance as Madame Arcati!
Yeah, I believe she was about 58 here, just before she became a TV superstar at 60 with Murder, She Wrote. She always appears so ageless. Now if only someone could post video of her original Mame show from back in the late 60's... I know there's video out there.
There are postings here on U Tube of the 1966 production. Please do a search and you will find most of the show there. There is no sound, of course, but the cast album has been somewhat sinc-ed to the movie(s).
I don't see those clips here anymore. Those clips are shown on the recent DVD/Public Television tribute to Jerry Herman. Also A&E/BIOGRAPHY showed them in their hour long documentary devoted to Lansbury. Apparently those were home movies taken during a performance. [The Herman DVD also has clips of her Aurelia in Dear World. What a treasure! I am thrilled that I saw her in that role in early 1969 at the Mark Hellinger Theater.]

AL was well into her 50's when this was performed. What a trouper! What energy.
Surely she defies the ages with her youth, vitality and star quality. There is NO ONE around today who can touch her!
How lucky we all were, yet this revival was not successful :-(( Perhaps if it was, there would have been no Murder She Wrote..
