When I hear music like this played on piano, I am convinced that there really is no limit to that particular instrument. The only limitation is human imagination. I mean, this has a tonal quality to it, and you can hear the "words" but at the same time it's so unorthodox. The notes are peculiar, and they are all stretched out and all over the place; but it works so well.
Close, but this is Horowitz's realm and nothing I've heard thus far comes close to his extreme passion and subtlety of this masterpiece. I'm happy to say :)
@flashlightsfreak Well, it seems as though Kissin is only playing the notes, but does not add any colour to them: not as much as Horowitz, in my opinion.
@Montyleeny14 I'll have to agree with you here. I don't always love Horowitz - he is one of those where I either hate or love his interpretations..lol - But he definitely plays this better than Kissin imo. I like them both, but Horowitz just takes this to HEAVENLY lvls =)
So ignorant you are , play like that need a life and in two seconds you compare two great pianist. The two version are very different and it because it's interesting to listen lot of pianist and not only one.....
and loorloop who compare a compositor at interprets , so ridiculous .....
no one plays this well except scrabin. it should sounds like it is just about to fall to pieces, but is being held together by a great will. kissin adds a structure to the piece that totally misses the whole point.
@Diomedes22 that is the single most appropriate description of a piece i've ever heard, it is just ridiculous how on the spot you are. i didn't even think thoughts like that were possible, thank you
He has extraordinary power, technical perfection, and passion... He always plays Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Liszt, and Prokofiev the best...
I'm not a kissin's fan but I like the way he plays this piece although when Horowitz play it I love this piece so much, you can feel it, he's the best!
It says something...My favourite is Cortot version. BUT! It is Horowitz, who made this piece so famous. It should be forever connected with his name, maestro Horowitz!
i love kissin, this is the best recording of this piece ive heard, no one else i've heard can match him. This is my favorite piano piece, but only when kissin plays it, anyone else i dont like it as much.
@killingppl: Please! You are doing what everyone on here does, comparing one pianist to another. They are each different. The interpretation is different. Neither is right or wrong. You're right, of course, Horowitz did play for hours. With many many mistakes. He was well known for them. Kissin is technically perfect. There's no arguing that point!
Amazing, but I prefer Horowitz version, by far. Is very notorious the differences in the end... the old man is much more emphatic. Kissin is a fantastic player, but I don't see him loosing himself in music in the way that Horowitz did.
I think I like this version better than Horowitz' even though Horowitz' may be more polished. This just reeks with passion and intensity to an even higher degree.
Can any of you dissenters play this piece? Probably not. Can any of you play like Kissin? Definitely not. There is no best, only different and this rediculous medium has reduced moments of sheer genius, like this, to utter trivialities. @Chopin1974l Please. Horowitz would play for hours and I don't see any pianist complaint. Still a very good interpretation but the beginning was too dramatic for this piece, the ending should be played with more emphasis.
@marcphilos in my opinion, such a combination had already come to pass when Horowitz recorded this in 1962, however like many of you will agree his most captivating and up-lifting rendition would have to be his 1986 encore (or at least i think it was an encore:-)) nevertheless; Timeless.
he sounds great, but i'd be too terrified to perform, much less record, anything that scriabin recorded(albeit via pianoroll) himself. while this version is absolutely jaw-dropping technically...its still sounds like a musical child compared to God himself. ;)
Something about his playing is just not right, his interpretation seems mediocre next to the great Horowitz performance of this piece. He doesn't come close to how Horowitz delivers this piece.
Up to this moment I have never considered any performance of this piece as clear, under control, and full of both transcendental fury and pathos as I have heard here. Bravo.
@hughaanderson Perhaps it's that one of the most common minor keys is D (nat), and D# is just that step away that makes it almost unnatural (no pun intended). Or perhaps, like Scriabin, you also have synaesthesia. :-)
This is a breathtaking performance! this was also my favourtite. Surprisingly, one day I found a better for me: Denis Matsuev live at carnegie hall (available on RCA Red Seal, 2008), which is also powerful and a little bit faster with great dynamics and rubati.
Kissin's version is outstanding as well and has a very intense drive to it. I would say that Horowitz' dynamics and patience with the piece makes all the difference though. The climax in Horowitz' version (the younger of the two) is absolutely momentous.
@CSPlayerDamon No, that's not at all what I meant but I can see where my sentence may have taken a wrong turn. There are two great Horowitz renditions on YouTube, but in one of them he's much older. I prefer the younger Horowitz playing Op. 8 No. 12 because he goes absolutely nuts in the climax. I'm not an idiot and I'm perfectly aware of their age difference!
Good, granted. Kid definitely has talent. Lacks the dynamic genius that only Horowitz mastered, in my humble opinion. I get chills watching Horowitz. Kissin ....not so much. I'm not moved or touched. Maybe it's the hair, I dunno.
lugansky tackles this etude nicely as well. very different, much more delicate than horowitz, but certainly as good. and most importantly, he plays it with a masterful serenity, whereas kissin's is just terribly hysterical.
i love Horowitz but lets admit Kissin is the evolution!! Vladimir himself would cry if he heard him play like this. Respect to the greatest pianist of our generation...

Great performance, although I think that i Kissin would do himself a lot of good if he held back in the beginning section a little more and waited until the end to explode into the triple forte. he is entitled to his own interpretation though and this is a very entertaining performance.
@chawoosemothergoose I agree, personally I like the process of rising to those magnificent chords more than the chords themselves! But it's no doubt that he is a wonderful pianist.
ya exactly. There is no dynamic marking on the score at the very beginning (at least not on the two editions I have) but to me it is suggesting a lower dynamic building as it progresses through the composition. Kissin's performance sort of ignores this but then again this is only one performance. My teacher is always telling me to never play things the same twice so I would like to hear other recordings of him playing this etude

Gosh this fellow is a dab-hand at the piano, I bet he sits alone and practices a lot, what long fingers he has, just as well he doesn't use his hands for other purposes if you know what I mean. ;-P
Lots of perfomances of this piece and all have their own individual points. This one really amazes me for the passion, the rigour combined with high sensitivity. Astonishing.
@wiwi10191019 no really who is it coz i personally haven't found that yet.. and please dont compare horowitz's version to this... coz this is really amazinggg and way much better than horowitz
@wiwi10191019 no really we don't... and if u mean Horowitz, im sure i can't say no myself...however, this version has something new, new spirit ! by maybe that's just me !!

I prefer horowitz's vesion, even though it has more mistakes. He looks more... sane.

@debussy84 Yes. I agree. It's always very important for a pianist to look sane. There's nothing worse than an insane looking pianist

Astonishing.

for me too jerky... on some moments he looks like he fought with this piano... but overall not bad...

This is the second best performence of this piece on YouTube. Of course everyone knows which is the best one.
