  • Faultless and perfect. I now need to howl at the moon for a few hours. May this man live forever!

  • orgasmic. i love evgeny kissin!!! i want a lock of his hair...!!!

  • When I hear music like this played on piano, I am convinced that there really is no limit to that particular instrument. The only limitation is human imagination. I mean, this has a tonal quality to it, and you can hear the "words" but at the same time it's so unorthodox. The notes are peculiar, and they are all stretched out and all over the place; but it works so well.

  • Kissin: I´ll play Scriabin Etude op 8 no 12

    His hair: NOOOOO!!!

  • Scrabin was crazy :D. No, seriously, is one of my favourite pieces.

  • And so the search for bbrriiaann9922's comment begins.

  • Here's Kissin. It'sh him. But not Chopin

  • OOOO M F* G!!!

  • Супер!

Представляю как он печатает на клавиатуре... ))

  • @NadiaHoksuert думаю он практически не сидит за компом, иначе не играл бы ТАК)

  • 3 words ... Listen to Horowitz

  • @Mozartstavanger

    ...or Luganski

  • @Mozartstavanger ... or Scriabin's own recording from 1910.

  • He play with passion, he play with love, he loves it, he is amazing!!!!

  • Why is it that I so often hear people comment that he plays without passion? How is this passionless and devoid of emotion?

  • I hammer the same notes but don't get the same sounds as his. I am so dispointed.

  • Um jovem com futuro brilhante, fora de "tempo"ou nervoso; talvez os dois.

  • hey is way way better than lang lang .. he has this russian melancholic perfectionism ;)

  • I love Youtube comments. They sometimes make my day.

  • I decided to record myself playing the etude after being inspired by this performance. Any feedback would be much appreciated!

  • @sofrech1991 I thought your performance was excellent. Congratulations!

  • Merveilleux! sublime! Passionnel! BRAVO...!!!

  • how is he not as famous as lang lang?? he's clearly as if not more talented :/

  • I absolutely miss the build up here....

  • Horowitz's interpretation is the best.

  • You know I'm really missing out. Kissin performs all over Europe, and hardly ever comes to America where I am.

  • This guy is phenominal - I can't think of a better recording of this intense piece!!

  • Close, but this is Horowitz's realm and nothing I've heard thus far comes close to his extreme passion and subtlety of this masterpiece. I'm happy to say :)

  • @EasternMerchant So no one must ever be allowed to perform this piece again just because Horowitz perfected it?

  • His bowing at the end kinda makes him look like he's thinking something along the lines of "fuck yeah, I'm Evgeny Kissin, and I'm awesome."

  • Meh, I don't like this interpretation. Horowitz' interpretation was much more convincing!

  • @Montyleeny14 Convincing of what?

  • @flashlightsfreak Well, it seems as though Kissin is only playing the notes, but does not add any colour to them: not as much as Horowitz, in my opinion.

  • @Montyleeny14 I'll have to agree with you here. I don't always love Horowitz - he is one of those where I either hate or love his interpretations..lol - But he definitely plays this better than Kissin imo. I like them both, but Horowitz just takes this to HEAVENLY lvls =)

  • 0:04

"Shut the fuck up and watch this."

  • Wow. That's all.

  • very nice ! nile !

  • OMG where's the reverb? I know, it's an outdoor performance...

  • @cowboytim98 Good pianists don't need no reverb. It's the best indicator for quality.

  • @berndschumannsvideos You silly rabbit. My question was rhetorical.

  • I like this rendition very much although the beginning is too loud.

Horowitz 1985 studio recording is the best but some of his live performances have too much mistakes.

  • its juvenile for someone to compare two great pianist because if everyone played the same way .. well than it would not be music at all

  • Horowitz > All. Period.

  • So ignorant you are , play like that need a life and in two seconds you compare two great pianist. The two version are very different and it because it's interesting to listen lot of pianist and not only one.....

and loorloop who compare a compositor at interprets , so ridiculous .....

  • Lugansky > Scriabine > Kissin > Horowitz

  • @loorloop No kidding! you are funny

    Horowitz >>> Kissin > Lisitsa >>>>>>>>>>>> Others

  • Horowitz is better. Much more passionate.

  • Kissin > Horowitz

  • no one plays this well except scrabin. it should sounds like it is just about to fall to pieces, but is being held together by a great will. kissin adds a structure to the piece that totally misses the whole point.

  • @Diomedes22 Holy shit, that was the best comment I have ever read on scriabin and kissin. respect.

  • @Diomedes22 that is the single most appropriate description of a piece i've ever heard, it is just ridiculous how on the spot you are. i didn't even think thoughts like that were possible, thank you

  • He has extraordinary power, technical perfection, and passion... He always plays Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Scriabin, Stravinsky, Liszt, and Prokofiev the best...

  • すごっ!

  • Kissin is affected pianist with aim on technique. Horowitz was true romantic

  • I'm not a kissin's fan but I like the way he plays this piece although when Horowitz play it I love this piece so much, you can feel it, he's the best!

  • I want to hear this played with the power of Kissin and the lyricism of Horowitz. Can some one do that for me?

  • @bbrriiaann9922

Yes, I'll do it next week. This week I'm busy painting the Sistine Chapel.

  • @AlanOsler hahah nice comment man ;)

i would also but im busy constricting the taj mahal... alone :P

  • @bbrriiaann9922 Horowitz when younger ;)

  • @bbrriiaann9922

Wait until Kissin is older maybe.

  • I tend not to like Kissin's version of anything. But this is brilliant.

  • It says something...My favourite is Cortot version. BUT! It is Horowitz, who made this piece so famous. It should be forever connected with his name, maestro Horowitz!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow. That's the way to play this piece. Punctum finalis.

  • @konigstephan so very right my friend. PERFECT Kissin.

  • Okay it's official, I'm going to start learning this piece right now.

  • I like this version very much!

  • no contrary!!

  • i love kissin, this is the best recording of this piece ive heard, no one else i've heard can match him. This is my favorite piano piece, but only when kissin plays it, anyone else i dont like it as much.

  • @Tader321 I recommend listening to Sofronitzky or Scriabin himself, though the recording quality is incomparable to this one.

  • Check out the Cortot version on Youtube, as Barenboim says Cortot finds the opiate within each piece. This is a performance without equal.

  • Beautiful

  • @killingppl: Please! You are doing what everyone on here does, comparing one pianist to another. They are each different. The interpretation is different. Neither is right or wrong. You're right, of course, Horowitz did play for hours. With many many mistakes. He was well known for them. Kissin is technically perfect. There's no arguing that point!

  • Amazing, but I prefer Horowitz version, by far. Is very notorious the differences in the end... the old man is much more emphatic. Kissin is a fantastic player, but I don't see him loosing himself in music in the way that Horowitz did.

  • I think I like this version better than Horowitz' even though Horowitz' may be more polished. This just reeks with passion and intensity to an even higher degree.

  • Can any of you dissenters play this piece? Probably not. Can any of you play like Kissin? Definitely not. There is no best, only different and this rediculous medium has reduced moments of sheer genius, like this, to utter trivialities. Do any of you realise this was an encore piece at the end of a two hour recital? Horowitz would always begin with this piece. It's exhausting to play!

  • @Chopin1974l Please. Horowitz would play for hours and I don't see any pianist complaint. Still a very good interpretation but the beginning was too dramatic for this piece, the ending should be played with more emphasis.

  • Ummm....Whats with the dude's hair? Even Horowitz's hair is cooler than this yahoo's.

  • Just close your eyes. This is a great performance, too. Magical!

  • its so clear!

  • HOROWITZ IN MOSCOW IS THE BEST, KISSIN IS LOOSER !!!

  • I saw him live about a year ago and was just as disappointed. beautiful but overdone.

  • If we could somehow combine Kissin's technical proficiency with Horowitz's emotional depth, we'd get the perfect interpretation.

  • @marcphilos in my opinion, such a combination had already come to pass when Horowitz recorded this in 1962, however like many of you will agree his most captivating and up-lifting rendition would have to be his 1986 encore (or at least i think it was an encore:-)) nevertheless; Timeless.

  • @6lues6rother

hm, I think the "scriabin plays scriabin is totally a historical treasure but it sounds like scriabin has played it to often ;)

but also it sounds (more than kissins or horowitz' one) as if there has to be at least six hands ;)

  • You know something is really good when you start getting goosebumps all over...

  • he sounds great, but i'd be too terrified to perform, much less record, anything that scriabin recorded(albeit via pianoroll) himself. while this version is absolutely jaw-dropping technically...its still sounds like a musical child compared to God himself. ;)

  • Something about his playing is just not right, his interpretation seems mediocre next to the great Horowitz performance of this piece. He doesn't come close to how Horowitz delivers this piece.

  • Up to this moment I have never considered any performance of this piece as clear, under control, and full of both transcendental fury and pathos as I have heard here. Bravo.

  • It's really not fair to compare Kissin with Horowitz, especially on Scriabin

  • good, but horowitz just has that magic..

  • There's something almost hallucinogenic about music written in D sharp minor!

  • @hughaanderson Perhaps it's that one of the most common minor keys is D (nat), and D# is just that step away that makes it almost unnatural (no pun intended). Or perhaps, like Scriabin, you also have synaesthesia. :-)

  • hahahahahahaha his hair :P

but other than that, not bad (:

  • @huangye2008

    O my, how infantile . . .

  • the impatience through phrase to phrase makes me feel that this is an immature playing

  • Grande Kissin...GRANDE!!!

  • His hair...it's very distracting lol

  • This is a breathtaking performance! this was also my favourtite. Surprisingly, one day I found a better for me: Denis Matsuev live at carnegie hall (available on RCA Red Seal, 2008), which is also powerful and a little bit faster with great dynamics and rubati.

  • 23 dislikes? are you fucking kidding me?

  • Bang bang bang bang bang bang \:

  • Kissin's version is outstanding as well and has a very intense drive to it. I would say that Horowitz' dynamics and patience with the piece makes all the difference though. The climax in Horowitz' version (the younger of the two) is absolutely momentous.

  • @KeithWhalen11 Horowitz younger than Kissin...If that is what you meant, I'd laugh.

  • @CSPlayerDamon No, that's not at all what I meant but I can see where my sentence may have taken a wrong turn. There are two great Horowitz renditions on YouTube, but in one of them he's much older. I prefer the younger Horowitz playing Op. 8 No. 12 because he goes absolutely nuts in the climax. I'm not an idiot and I'm perfectly aware of their age difference!

  • @KeithWhalen11 Oh..Okay then. I also prefer that version a lot more. He definetely goes nuts!

  • @KeithWhalen11 totally agreed.

  • Good, granted. Kid definitely has talent. Lacks the dynamic genius that only Horowitz mastered, in my humble opinion. I get chills watching Horowitz. Kissin ....not so much. I'm not moved or touched. Maybe it's the hair, I dunno.

  • I support this message :P

  • lugansky tackles this etude nicely as well. very different, much more delicate than horowitz, but certainly as good. and most importantly, he plays it with a masterful serenity, whereas kissin's is just terribly hysterical.

  • i love Horowitz but lets admit Kissin is the evolution!! Vladimir himself would cry if he heard him play like this. Respect to the greatest pianist of our generation...

  • Bravissimo!

  • this is so perfectly played that it almost sounds like a midi.

  • Beautiful , just beautiful

  • this is horowitz's piece. kissin makes it sound like chopin having a nervous breakdown.

  • @inblahblahland nice one

  • @inblahblahland i COMPLETELY agree.

  • This performance is amazing. I fell in love with it instantly.

  • OK - great.

But no one can beat Horowitz.

    NO ONE

  • ....dedicato a chi ha il cuore musicale<3....

  • Technically blows Horowitz's old fingers out of the water, but I don't appreciate this uphill battle against the piece. It doesn't feel like Scriabin meant it- Horowitz is far superior in that respect.

  • @katalindre sorry but Kissin could not touch Horowitz in technique or in any other way, not even if VH was at his deathbed.

  • @katalindre I agree with 36beachbum's opinion,too.

I actually can play this etude, and everytime I play, I wish my piano

sounds like the one, Horowitz, but never thought about my play to be like

    Kissin's.

  • he begins too loud. the begin has to be piano... in my opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • @StanEvalio Im pretty sure he is playing on a piano

  • @JOEL4444 Piano means to play quietly...

  • @OriginalBasaliskos please do allow wits of pun

  • @edmondrachmaninov You call that wit?

  • @OriginalBasaliskos

    undeniably a pun though.

  • @StanEvalio

interesting. I've always heard the piece more loud/furious in the beginning than piano...hm.

  • Evgeny kissin brings a new dynamic dimesion to this difficult piece. He has total control, excellent phrasing and great passion. Vladimir and Kissin are both great and neither is better than already fantastic.

  • Kissin is good, of course - but Horowitz is sublime and otherworldly!

  • I was cringing the whole time. He is fighting this piece along with the piano! There is no momentum building up from beginning to end... It wasn't exciting at all for me. It's just all too loud and he wastes unnecessary energy with all of his excess movements. Horowitz will always own this piece.

  • my hands started hurting while i watched this. that man got some strong fingers :)

  • Horowitz is still the best in Scriabin!!!!!!

  • dramatic high strung

  • Personally, my favorite is Lugansky. I admire Kissin greatly, though. His Brahms is great.

  • the best one: Horowitz, of course :-)

  • Ужасно! Без души, невыразительно. По клавишам лупит и всё. Кто ж его так научил?

  • not te best one

    wheetge bass so weak

  • Evgeny Kissin, Brilliant!!

  • what a gangster.

  • If God played piano it would be something like that.

  • This is great!!!

  • god this interpretation is so nice. he weighs heavy on some notes which brings another aura into the piece.. horowitz is more fluid.. and now i will click rachmaninoff's interpretation :D ty youtube.

  • I think this is the best performance of this magical piece of music. Absolute perfection. Brilliant.

  • perfect :)

  • Great performance, although I think that i Kissin would do himself a lot of good if he held back in the beginning section a little more and waited until the end to explode into the triple forte. he is entitled to his own interpretation though and this is a very entertaining performance.

  • @chawoosemothergoose I agree, personally I like the process of rising to those magnificent chords more than the chords themselves! But it's no doubt that he is a wonderful pianist.

  • ya exactly. There is no dynamic marking on the score at the very beginning (at least not on the two editions I have) but to me it is suggesting a lower dynamic building as it progresses through the composition. Kissin's performance sort of ignores this but then again this is only one performance. My teacher is always telling me to never play things the same twice so I would like to hear other recordings of him playing this etude

  • I prefer horowitz's vesion, even though it has more mistakes. He looks more... sane.

  • a-hahaha! I agree! Yikes!

  • @debussy84 Yes. I agree. It's always very important for a pianist to look sane. There's nothing worse than an insane looking pianist

  • @lewars1912 Yes, a pianist must always look sane

  • Scriabin has written these magnificent etudes for big hands genius like Evgeny kissin and Horowitz

  • Lots of perfomances of this piece and all have their own individual points. This one really amazes me for the passion, the rigour combined with high sensitivity. Astonishing.

  • Bravo Scribian

  • for me too jerky... on some moments he looks like he fought with this piano... but overall not bad...

  • This is the second best performence of this piece on YouTube. Of course everyone knows which is the best one.

  • Well spoken

  • Touche

Yes, this is the second best... And an absolutely brilliante performace at that.

  • @wiwi10191019 yeah mine !!! lol

  • @wiwi10191019 Lugansky.

  • @wiwi10191019

eheheheheheheheh yes i know.. the old man

  • @wiwi10191019 ....and which is the best one please???

  • @bibipiano27 This man is the best: watch?v=pPTe1xMB9Uk

  • @wiwi10191019 oh i have seen that....i prefer kissin...thanks anyway!

  • @wiwi10191019

Actually Idon't . Could you let me know?

  • @edwardsmaaail this is the best one:

    watch?v=pPTe1xMB9Uk

  • infatti è horowitz il migliore.......

  • @wiwi10191019 no really who is it coz i personally haven't found that yet.. and please dont compare horowitz's version to this... coz this is really amazinggg and way much better than horowitz

  • @wiwi10191019 no really we don't... and if u mean Horowitz, im sure i can't say no myself...however, this version has something new, new spirit ! by maybe that's just me !!

  • @wiwi10191019 which is me of course :)

  • @wiwi10191019 Love your comment :)

  • @wiwi10191019

Or the third, at the right you can find Scriabin plas Scriabin
