quite possibly, THE most boring game i have ever played. Its the kind of thing i would think of i was trying to create 'the most boring game in the world'... LOL
Mainly graphics, the user interface also changed a little bit, of course, the fixes to common problems and the new features as well but that's to be expected.
I have picked up both games and never seriously played either of them, however recently I got back into SimCity4 (an amazing game for 2003) and had an amazing time, then I remembered Cities XL and it looks breathtaking but from what I hear it isnt that good, however serious players love it.
This game is amazing and gives the real opportunity to balance with precision every strategy in building cities. It requires a lot of accuracy and thorough thinking in order to achieve a high result. I could say that it is better than SC4 because it combines more new elements such as resources and also provides better link between various things which transforms the game into a challenging experience. Thank you developers!
I dont know if its implemented but: This game could have been develepoed further. I mean,there could have been multiplayer with 2-4 players and in the later game there would be wars and you need to maintain your resources while still building more barrackses and army bases to keep fighting,tank factorys and things like that.
i really love this game, it really is fun and entertaining like simcity.
maybe simcity 4 have better and more realistic city management simulation, but as far as it goes for fun and build-as-you-want game-play i gotta give this game a 4/5!!
the reason why i didn't gave it 5/5 is because this game gets boring really fast (as long as you stay building the same city all the time)
overall i would recommend this game to any simcity fan that is just looking for more.. :)

@illage2 Yes. There are some things that will have a small learning curve but there are so many video's on here to look at if you have problems. I played a lot of sim city in the past, but it had been well over a year since I had last played that when this came out. I was able to pick it up and build this and my online city with no problems.

@jock0man Quite a lot actually, I am working on a video I hope to put out in a week or two depending on my time over the next two weekends. This video will show case the differences between them. IMO 2011 is the better game. It took the quality of the first and enhanced it with better economics and trading for a true city wide economy.
@jock0man i played both its exactly the same - same gameplay same things same graphics same look and all but there are more stuff the trading is way improved and easier to operate (in my opinion) new option of the linear zones, new buildings including some new landmarks (or smthin like that) e.g. the statue of liberty or the eiffel tower... it is better many sequels are worse than the first game (not only strategy) but this one is same engine and all but new improved things! 2011 is better ;)
This game is amazing. It is no simcity 5 but it is close! It looks amazing and runs very smooth. Lot's of things to choose from. I for one love it. I love zooming in a seeing the landscape with the topographical camera all the way zoomed up! Love that part!! Beautiful graphics!
@TheJedimaster6788 Definately. Sim City became too clustered with things and kind of lost touch with its roots as a city builder and it became a city builder second to the economical builder which was fun, but not quite like this.
I saw this game on steam, and liked the video. I'm not sure if you're in the UK, but it's £30. Not the price of a full retail game, about a quarter less. Is it worth it in your opinion?
@Kelberwitzi I did pick up the 2011 at the discount price. XL I pre ordered the special edition to get some extra stuff. At a discount I would say yes. But I do not know the style of game you like so its hard to say yes or know. If you like a casual yet fun city builder this is for you. You can micromanage things to a point, but you do not have too. 2011 makes it even better along those lines.

@quadsnipable Depends on what you want. I find this so much more fun, and the newer engine and graphics really shine. SC4 is something I loved to death and played a lot, but wont return to any time soon.

this game is more realistic but when you play simcity 4 you fell free! you cen drive in the city and make some metors or fire. this two game is just like sims 2 and sims 3.
@stootoo I do miss some of that from the Sim City genre, but they should have incorporated Streets of Sim City into it more instead of that odd driving style one. It was fun, but kinda cheesy.
@MrGigigigia not as of now, but the games are quite different so a subjective comparison like that would not work. I loved Sim4 and played it quite a lot, but I have had more fun just building and enjoying my city here instead of managing 400 things at once trying to earn any money and expand.

I think it will be a while until a buy another city simulator game. I had bad luck with Simcity 4. Commute times and crime levels would sky-rocket. Mods didn't help. I had my best luck with Simcity 3,000. Crime is easier to get rid of in that game.
@Ripskin16 Does this game have something like or similar to occupant types like in SimCity 4? For example: In SimCity 4, if you zoned residential zones, then if you spent your money on quality schools, hospitals, libraries, police stations, etc.. And placed in well funded parks, you'll get high wealth residential. If you don't place any schools, hosptials, parks, police stations, etc. in your city. Then low wealth residential buildings will develope in you city.
@92greenebeen There are a lot of buildings, but not quite so many specialized ones just yet. Only one stadium of each type I think, never built one so I cannot say.
Theres several bridge types, depends on what your spanning and your budget.

@RUNEFORCE Theres a lot of good cards, the nvidia 8 / 9 series are good, fairly similar and their new stuff is nice just pricey. The ATI 5 series is great. I have the 5800 running EyeFinity.

Yes, I miss some Sim City 4 stuff too - the subways, the railroads etc. also there aren't enough sounds when U click on buildings and stuff I mean they could bring a bigger variety of sounds and do U know what's pissing me off ? it seems to me that City Life still had more freedom and a stronger concept than Cities XL or am I wrong? The graphics look much better of course but City Life is an older game.
@Assafro In some area's it might, City Life is the predecessor to XL I believe. I never played it but I have heard of it. Made by the same company so I believe XL just expands upon it in areas.
@PkerWhomerang Much better than societies, it does have 3d but its better than SimCity in ways. There are aspects that are a little more shallow but other's that are deeper. I enjoy it much more overall.

@GayBoyRunning yeah,buses were put into the online version about 2 months ago, and when the PO shut down the offline patch brought them to the solo game. Trains and such have not been added yet. You can build shipping ports but no ferries or anything.... yet?
I have several other video's that go over some of the other aspects and my latest one gives a brief intro to buses.
There is no god mode. The terraforming tools suck honestly but you have access to them at any time. However the building aspects of the game are 10x better so a hillside does not need to be 100% perfect to put a road on it etc like in SC4.
Check out some of my online gameplay videos, (Skip the first, all talk.) and you can see skip through it to see how you can modify roads and such, or just build straight ones. The video I am working on shows a lot of changes road wise between the current

is the online play really for ever and ever over? cause that would of been much better.
The game does have some demanding requirements out of the GPU. I am playing on an XFX 5850 from ATI in Eyefinity.
Online play is nice, but honestly the way it was run was not the best for the game or the developers. Ending it to bring the same level of content to the single player will give the game a better user base. If online consisted of visiting and trading then they would not have had to pay so much to run it.
Hopefully it will return, but for now solo mode will benefit from it endin
You can build straight, curved, angled, whatever you want. If you cannot go straight try turning the road and going around the obstacle. Much more realistic.
Tunnels and bridges are a joy to build, I even built a tunnel under a lake just because a bridge was not possible with the city almost on the water front.
Ram and GPU wise it should be able to handle medium settings, perhaps a little higher with no AA enabled. However that CPU might be a bottleneck for it requiring less graphical settings to keep it running.
Especially theres a video that shows the cars light on when it's night, but I don't know why didn't came out on yours. If you want to see it copy and paste this:

For the zoom level there is not another city builder near it in quality. Kind of how SC4 blew me away with the detail you could see when zooming in :) The shadow's and texture quality are amazing. Looking at the WM trash bins is always fun, so much detail on everything. They did a good job with it.
Going to be a little pricey for a laptop to run it, but its doable around $800 - 1k.
I kind of built a system, but it's a Latitude E5400 Intel Core 2 Dou T9600 2.8 GHz, 3 gb of RAM, and planning to replace the video card GMA 4500HD to a 1 gb video card if possible it has 2 PCI Xpress card slot I might later buy a 512 mb video card. So does this complete it?
Farms can only be built in certain area's of the map that have the soil quality for them. Similar to real life not all soil is good for farming so they limit where you can build them. If you watch when I go to build them the area available for farming comes up as the white area.
The gameplay seems pretty smooth.

I think it will be a while until a buy another city simulator game. I had bad luck with Simcity 4. Commute times and crime levels would sky-rocket. Mods didn't help. I had my best luck with Simcity 3,000. Crime is easier to get rid of in that game.

@Ripskin16 Does this game have something like or similar to occupant types like in SimCity 4? For example: In SimCity 4, if you zoned residential zones, then if you spent your money on quality schools, hospitals, libraries, police stations, etc.. And placed in well funded parks, you'll get high wealth residential. If you don't place any schools, hosptials, parks, police stations, etc. in your city. Then low wealth residential buildings will develope in you city.

@92greenebeen There are a lot of buildings, but not quite so many specialized ones just yet. Only one stadium of each type I think, never built one so I cannot say.
Theres several bridge types, depends on what your spanning and your budget.

lol i got this game and play on shitty settings :S my card fails i got nvidia 6150 se LMAO lol , but all my other settings are good 4.8 ghz , 4 gb ram 3.0 pixel and shader version etc ... i really need to get a new card cuz my integrated card sucks :S you recommend any good gaming card :)? ;P

@RUNEFORCE Theres a lot of good cards, the nvidia 8 / 9 series are good, fairly similar and their new stuff is nice just pricey. The ATI 5 series is great. I have the 5800 running EyeFinity.

Yes, I miss some Sim City 4 stuff too - the subways, the railroads etc. also there aren't enough sounds when U click on buildings and stuff I mean they could bring a bigger variety of sounds and do U know what's pissing me off ? Flat surface. I hate to see my cities on steps so I avoid it as much as I can but this ain't always enough :(

Hey! nice vid, but I have a question, I bought this game like 7 months ago, then I bought an NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT (which is better than the one MC recomends) and when I go to the Video Options Menu in the game, it tells me Recomended Settings: LOW! Why does this happen? Also I have 3GB of RAM, then this shouldnt happen. Please answer me if you know what can I do! :D

it seems to me that City Life still had more freedom and a stronger concept than Cities XL or am I wrong? The graphics look much better of course but City Life is an older game.

@Assafro In some area's it might, City Life is the predecessor to XL I believe. I never played it but I have heard of it. Made by the same company so I believe XL just expands upon it in areas.

@PkerWhomerang Much better than societies, it does have 3d but its better than SimCity in ways. There are aspects that are a little more shallow but other's that are deeper. I enjoy it much more overall.

@GayBoyRunning yeah,buses were put into the online version about 2 months ago, and when the PO shut down the offline patch brought them to the solo game. Trains and such have not been added yet. You can build shipping ports but no ferries or anything.... yet?
I have several other video's that go over some of the other aspects and my latest one gives a brief intro to buses.

okay look i want to buy this game but i got questions.
is there god mode like in simcity4?
when i zone do all my roads have to be all strange looking like can i just make a straight line for a road and correct intersections.

There is no god mode. The terraforming tools suck honestly but you have access to them at any time. However the building aspects of the game are 10x better so a hillside does not need to be 100% perfect to put a road on it etc like in SC4.
Check out some of my online gameplay videos, (Skip the first, all talk.) and you can see skip through it to see how you can modify roads and such, or just build straight ones. The video I am working on shows a lot of changes road wise between the current

oh well in that case than ill buy the game, but looking at the graphics in the game it does ask for a demand on the video card. what video card are you using?

The game does have some demanding requirements out of the GPU. I am playing on an XFX 5850 from ATI in Eyefinity.
Online play is nice, but honestly the way it was run was not the best for the game or the developers. Ending it to bring the same level of content to the single player will give the game a better user base. If online consisted of visiting and trading then they would not have had to pay so much to run it.
Hopefully it will return, but for now solo mode will benefit from it endin

City shown in the video's.
You can build straight, curved, angled, whatever you want. If you cannot go straight try turning the road and going around the obstacle. Much more realistic.
Tunnels and bridges are a joy to build, I even built a tunnel under a lake just because a bridge was not possible with the city almost on the water front.

Ram and GPU wise it should be able to handle medium settings, perhaps a little higher with no AA enabled. However that CPU might be a bottleneck for it requiring less graphical settings to keep it running.
Is it a dual Centrino or just a single core?

This game is amazing!!!!!!! I can't beleive a game can have that much realistic shades and more!!! I mean first person that's amazing!!!! I just wish I had a laptop that's compatible to this game and hope what kind of requirments it needs. Great video by the way.

For the zoom level there is not another city builder near it in quality. Kind of how SC4 blew me away with the detail you could see when zooming in :) The shadow's and texture quality are amazing. Looking at the WM trash bins is always fun, so much detail on everything. They did a good job with it.
Going to be a little pricey for a laptop to run it, but its doable around $800 - 1k.

I kind of built a system, but it's a Latitude E5400 Intel Core 2 Dou T9600 2.8 GHz, 3 gb of RAM, and planning to replace the video card GMA 4500HD to a 1 gb video card if possible it has 2 PCI Xpress card slot I might later buy a 512 mb video card. So does this complete it?

That meets the requirements. Vid base is a 3800 HD if you go the AMD route I believe so you should be fine.

Farms can only be built in certain area's of the map that have the soil quality for them. Similar to real life not all soil is good for farming so they limit where you can build them. If you watch when I go to build them the area available for farming comes up as the white area.
