F-111 at High Speed

I loved growing up with these planes, doing dump and burns, but my god after you hear one of these things in a high speed pass, it is fucking amazing.

considering the top speed of the sr-71 is mach 3.2 and it holds the speed record for a manned aircraft, and considering the fact that the technical notes from General Dynamics list the Maximum speed of the f-111 at 1,262 kts (Mach 2.5) I must reject your claim, perhaps you meant mach 2.5?... and yes I am a pilot.

MrHotguy777....you say you used to work on them. Doing what?. The top speed of an F111 is mach 2.5 not mach 3.5. Only the SR-71 and MiG -25 have gone faster tham mach 3. Check your facts.

Riverfire pfft! Back in the late 70s or around 1980 I remember a flyover of brisbane at night for the old Warana parade. 5 of them about 2km apart line abreast across the whole center of the city from S to N (I lived at northgate). Caused multiple car crashes, 100s of ufo reports, people bolting from their homes as they hadnt seen it before. 5 dumps and burns side by side running for like 2 mins!

@F111tech its not the same aircraft you guys had in America same shell thats about it as the f-111 they had back in the US, but it now has better made jets engines new computer software from the best stuff that aircrafts have today but there is only so much you can do to a aircraft she is a bit old now its time for us to get a new one but i think the Australian army should keep some for a bomber it would beat may others still today for a strike bomber not as a dog fighter aircraft though

They're actually not going that fast at all. See the swept forward wings? They have them swept forward for low speed flight.

I talked to one of the ground crew after the F111 flyovers at Riverfire 2007, and he told me that the jets they have fly over for Riverfire are actually going so slow that if they went too much slower they'd fall out of the sky.

It looks fast to us, but for a fight pilot, they're actually going quite slow.

@MikeT2005 we prob wouldn't see it if it was at top speed i think we should keep some still for the Army it still make a great bomber what aircraft today can cach it ? maybe the f22 raptor thats about it or maybe not the f-111 was one off its kind and Australia mad it even better than the yanks did still today the worlds most feared aircraft amongst pilots today
