  • What an awesome film!

  • Hey everyone I just made a Facebook group called Travelers and Vagabonders. Anyone is welcome to join it. Its a place for talking about one's travels, sharing pictures and helpful links. Come check it out.

  • I'd give anything to live a day like hi has.

  • :)

  • I love this clip!

  • In this information age we were fortunate to have had George Ohsawa come along. Sadly macrobiotics is not taught is grade school yet. Yes young and old people do have problems. Vision quests are not pratical for the masses of humans on earth before being given a understanding of macrobiotics. I understand that the imperfect becomes perfect. So if this movie causes a bunch of lemming type humans to jump from a cliff so to speak then this is cause and effect beyond my complete control.

  • Haha this is one of my favourite parts of the movie!

"You're so tasty, you're so... organic, so natural, you're the apple of my eye!"

  • he is one of the few who died happy

  • i truly respect chris and he and i are a lot a like i spent 5 years hitchhiking canada and have spent 3 months in the wild aka no mans land ultimate freedom i made some travel videos check em out on my page

  • Lots of young people run and hide from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences.

This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. Sad but true.

  • vision quests are not a part of european heritage; and thus, our young men have incredibly high rates of suicide, violent crime, and so forth, that the natives did not. Either you don't know what drugs addiction is, or you don't understand what it truly is to live outside, alone. There is nothing delusional about Chris. I have taken many many people down rivers and into the largest wilderness area in the lower 48, and they have done so "prepared" but some of them die as well, it is the same.

  • @lukebaugh224 I have done all kinds of drugs and alcohol however I understand that these are extreme examples of improperly balanced foods. Therefore consciously I am mentally fortified to not ever become addicted to finite matter in whatever form it is presented. I am wise to the fact that I am submersed within the material finite. The vision quests that you talk about are no longer necessary in these modern times thanks to George Ohsawa's modern day macrobiotic philosophy.

  • Ohsawa never once spoke of anthropology nor is he qualified to. I have a feeling that i know more about macrobiotics than you do. You obviously had some serious problems at some point and are getting yourself into balance, but don't delude yourself by your position in life at this time, and whatever personal guilt and judgment you may have and thus through that point of view thinking that somehow you can judge others lives because you have found your own to be imbalanced. focus on yourself.

  • @lukebaugh224 "Ohsawa never once spoke of anthropology nor is he qualified to. I have a feeling that i know more about macrobiotics than you do." Your statement proves to me that you are the opposite of what you say you know more about. Furthermore, of course Ohsawa had a complete understanding of humans past and present. He didn't need to mention the word anthropopogy however I am sure he knew the meaning. As for me, if I see a situation as dangerous I will judge it and warn others.

  • The distress note below was purposely not part of the movie.

Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?"

He screwed up and in the end no longer though of himself as the free-spirit Alex Supertramp.

    Movie romantic, reality not.

  • Too many @tts! be real, be yourself!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • that is the best movie of all times and im not fucking joking. chris is one of my top heroes

  • Films like these are so much more powerful and so much more lasting (and so much more deserving of an oscar or two) being sixteen i completely emphasize with chri's' rebellious and revoultionary nature in this film. Utterly brilliant.

  • Could have been put more clearly.

  • Oh Im sorry socializaetion or wahateve r u call yourself you were talking to me.

  • someone called socializolation gave me a nasty response to something I never said. Hey BUD get your messages to the right people . it sucks to wake up to being called a jack ass for something u dint say. in a n email.

  • @doxiehouse, you didn´t get the point for the one down i gave you, did you? NO, YOU DIDN`T! your line implies, that it´s only a loss, if someone has potential. what about those who don´t are clever? let me gues - they can simply die, because nobody cares about them anyway, ha?

  • @ajay4uind there was a very short clip in the film of him spearing a small fish, but the sensible thing to have done is set up a fish trap using his net, in an alaskan river like that he had a constant life line

  • This is one part of the film I didn't get.......Why does he look into the camera; was it a spontaneous thing that Emile did, and Sean Penn kept it in or what? Maybe it doesn't matter to most people, but I thought it to be a little odd.

  • @mtbb08 I thought that too, I watched the film for the second time yesterday and noticed it.

  • @msmoviemaker157 he only says he doesnt want a watch when he goes to alska and they show that in the film aswell

  • @sambabway i noticed that to and also one thing that they showed in the movie was tha bus was near the river and he never caught any fish with the net he had for fishing why

  • I LOVE that part, favourite movie, Christopher will always be my hero

  • i loved this show,,and that was one of my favorite parts..just wish everyone thought more like this guy,,what a better place this ol world would be...

  • wHY IS HE WEARING a watch if in the book he claimed he didnt need a watch..hmm movies a bit off there

  • @MsMoviemaker157 - Well. He was drunk when he said he didn't need a watch? I dunno. :P

  • @MsMoviemaker157 that was christophers actual watch and later on in the film when hes in the city he asks for the time and isnt wearing it :)

  • this is one of my favorite parts of this movie...all though, every part is my favorite part so...saying this is one of my favorites, doesn't really mean enything... great GREAT movie!!!

  • WJHATS THE SONG NAME!!!!!!

  • @axoxg13 Rise -- Eddie Vedder

  • ?????HIS NAME IS SYMBOLIC??????

    Christopher (Christ, Jesus Christ)

Johnson (The Apostle John, John in the bible stood out different from everyone)

McCandless (without a light -Jesus is suppose to be the light of the world)

Now I'm not the most religious person but I just find some of this leading to something. So I guess you could say Chris was an angel from God? If you want to believe it that way. Or how about another Jesus? I have my own opinions but i find this interesting

  • @FilmCrewA13

Yeah, and if you do enough math you can allways find a way to make every name of every bad person you know sum up to 666.

You're over-analyzing. Chris was a great dude. But he wasn't any angel or anything. He just seeked his own truth.

  • @FilmCrewA13

Did you also write the tv-series Lost? ;-)

  • It's amazing how much life an apple can brings you! love it.

  • thas was a great life.

  • this is my favourit part of the movie ahah

    'I'm not superman, I'm supertramp.. You're superapple'

  • the end of this clip is the funniest...

he just swoops down at the camera....LOLOL

  • Everything taste good when you starve yourself.

  • i think this part is better, when you know the movie :]

  • This dialogue is brilliant,"I'm not superman, im supertramp and you are superapple" just brilliant

  • "You are the apple of my eye" :D

  • Did they not think of him when he was hurting as a kid. I think not running away, but finding himself in a way?

  • my own son is lcoked in a facility with schitzophrenia

I would have loved him to do this instead even if it meant his life ends young. He did what he wanted. Its always a huge loss when a young man with so much potential 's

    life ends.

But here it is not a complete tragedy. parents can lose their sons in lots of REALLY tragic ways. not ,ok ,to put a value on their loss, but McCandless lived while he was alive.

  • @doxiehouse | and there are very, very, very few humans who actually lived whilst alive. The value of life is not in years, but in experiences.

  • @doxiehouse, i gave you one down, in order to RESTORE order!

how DA FUCK can you say that it is a loss if someone with much petential dies? in other words, people with less potential, less education, less beauty and the fucking list goes on and on and makes me go nuts - is less worth than someone with potential? if so, then: SCREW YOU! Jack ass!

  • @doxiehouse

    Cause?

  • @doxiehouse hey not being mean or anything but kids with skits do like the boys ever think they are girls and dress like them? just wondering because i saw the movie psycho and he did it but i think he was crazy anyway yeh just a question i had and sorry to hear about your son best of luck to him

  • so...organic

    :D

  • I thought this was a really good movie..but come on, make the apple part a bit more real. If you pluck an apple from a tree, it won't be treated with food wax to make it shiny, and it won't be perfect like this one. Lol..just had to say that, we have our own apple trees :-)

  • Don`t sweat the small stuff.

  • Haha I'm not..I just noticed it when I watched that part. I really liked the movie though :-)

  • I love it, the meaning is everything...

  • if you dont have any idea why someone would renounce all material shit and head off alone then I feel sorry for you. He was Happy, and that is alot more than I can say for alot of people.

  • Do you not think he was maybe running away from his problems a little bit? His parents and so on. Also, maybe he was just a tad selfish, you know, leaving his sister all alone with no contact for two years. His own happiness, deeply hurted his family.

  • Oh dear, 'hurt his family'.

  • Yes. I could never, ever, subject my Mother to such torment.

  • @mtb416 what about his torment?

  • Not sure what you're addressing.

  • @leon327 I agree. Alexander is selfish - he lives his dream at the expense of his family whilst preaching that his life path is the correct one and that if you desire material things then you somehow want something you shouldn't. Desiring money for the sake of money is bad, desiring money for the security and life it brings is fine. His parents have done everything for him and he throws it all away, needlessly. He should have gone to Harvard.

To others; don't tell me I don't get the film, I do.

  • @hiddenshadow11 You don't get the film. Ultimate freedom can only be found when you have no obligations.

  • @hiddenshadow11 - Live your life for yourself, not your family.

  • @hiddenshadow11 Yes, he hurt his family, but he wasn't selfish. Think of Rainy and Jan Burres. If Alex hadn't joined them, they'd maybe never found each other. And he brought sense in this old man's life. He would probably have stayed in his house for the rest of his life. I know what you mean, but maybe he was just a wandering soul, not ready to forgive his parents for his (in his opinion) lost youth. In the end he does, though.

  • i love it when he talked to that apple.. :)

  • does anyone know where this portion was filmed? near mt. hood oregon?

  • "humanity is corrupted by the monetary system. that and only that"

The monetary system is the evil and humans are by nature "good", that's your point? they are just "corrupted" by an evil notion? That is a bit too simple...For example do you think we can link all the crimes on eath to the sole question of money? we can't... Humans can show incredible inhumanity for no reson at all...

  • i'm not superman i'm supertramp and you are superapple!

    Love it!

  • It'd be cool to star in a movie with him.

  • Emile really does such a great job as Christopher McCandless. This part cracks me up. I'm trying to get a book published and my family says it could be a great screenplay so I decided that Emile would have to be he protaganist. No questions asked...Hirsch is great. I love him.

  • The source of a message has nothing to do with the validity of the message. You might not want to place humanity into something which has "no life" but the fact of the matter is that it's true.

  • lmao

    love this film

    love eddie

    rock on!

  • it's the nature of our species. we are too successful as a species. we can travel to new places easily, we reproduce all year round, we have an intelligence which enables us to dominate everything elses mental capabilities. our very nature is at an imbalance with everything around us. sure, if everyone came together to do something, we could solve this. but, will we? we'd have to all collectively go against our very nature as human beings in order to solve this problem. it'd never happen.

  • if u think i'm conditioned by hollywood, then ur wrong. but, that line in the matrix, (although hollywood based) is still very true. humanity in general,is a virus. sure, there are exceptions to the rule. there are people who do good for nature, and find intelligent ways to live in balance with nature. but collective humanity cannot help but be a virus to the host planet it lives on. no matter what we do to help the situation,we inevitably will over populate, and exhaust an area of its resources.

  • thank god (or whatev you believe in) there are those people in the world that work towards a fare society, in which every single being is respected, from minerals to humans, because the earth herself is alive, and we should respect her, and everything she has given birth to. We just use everything, minerals, trees, water, air, and never say thanks for it. Thank you Earth, thank you God, thank you universe for everything that surrounds us, thanks for letting us be here. We don't own the Earth.

  • I did the same thing with a banana. Except, it wasn't in my eye......

  • "no matter how much faith u have in thin ice, you'll still fall thru"

ur faith in society is futile.human civilization is naturally based around a hierarchy.there will always be the weak underneath the elite struggling for equality, until the end of history.and with world population out of control, societies are becoming impossible to manage.there is only 1 other thing on earth that compares to human society..and that's a virus.if we remain on earth there is only 1 direction for society..downhill

  • i knot the movie that wrote this words into your brain. humanity = virus. that's exactly what they want you to believe. stop dramatising!

we are slipping into sf realm ... if humanity is a virus, then be the first to do this universe a favour and decimate as many of us as you can ;)

    cheers :p

  • what are u talking about? humanity is a virus. it has all the traits and similarities of a virus. if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck. we're just an intelligent form of a virus. we spread to an area, reproduce, consume everything in that area, then migrate to another area, reproduce, and then consume all over again. this is our nature. some of us mean well, but human nature collectively is a virus..sorry to break it to u

  • i take it you did some study of sociology...dude, you should for the sake of your sanity read what the bible says about you, what God thinks about you...might be worth a minute of your time-

just a friend trying to get by myself,

    peace

  • HAHA you make me laugh!!!

  • the best thing about this movie is all. and the lirycs amzing thats a real way to see the life we are so tiny but together we are all at leat all we have why not leave in peace helping out each other thats the real reason of the society only united we can do better changes the religions are a great wall that divide us the ones from the north south east and west but were all the same we smile we cry we have friend and the most important we love.
  • amen... albornozcristian

  • in ur mind it's running away. to people like me, it's running TO something. to something more profound than what modern society sells as success. sure, society is natural for man, but not today's society. it degenerates man. this technological onslaught spoils a mans soul and makes him even more out of touch with nature. u can take ur society. i don't want it, and u obviously don't want us in it..so, do what u do, and keep ur beliefs and opinions within ur society..their better off there.

  • well put

  • i get your point but you don't need money to feel happy nor leave something behinde

  • you don't know anything, what about all the intresting people he met on his journey that were dirt poor but happy as fuck!

take a look around you and reexamine our soceity

  • You remind me of every other shithead in highschool.

  • i had this same epiphany on a seven day backpacking trip, i had a huge red apple in my pack, and i was saveing it b/c i knew it would be delicious and sure ass hell it was the best apple i ever had, and it made me think of chris

  • deepknotch just fuck off, and go see the movie.

Chirstofer lived that two years more than you in your all live.

    Rest in peace Supertramp

  • I'm not Superman, I'm supertramp. And you're Superapple.

  • you are a fuckin idiot... you can't even write proper sentences

  • didnt know much about what you write but i can tell you that this guy have more balls then you ever will have..

  • lol this was one of the best parts in the movie

  • your'e worthless

  • you're pathetic because you think i care

  • Ahh, gotta love Youtube threats.

  • this is a great film. hope you didnt pirate this particulr film because if you did your an asshole

  • If it's good quality there's a good chance he did that.. it looks more like he cam'd it to me.. He probably bought the dvd and didn't know how to cut out the clip off of the dvd.

  • shut up fool we all know it's a great movie and a heart rendering story but your the one who's also watching it on youtube! so fuck it if it's a pirate!

  • Harsh. lol!

  • crappy quality. if you pirated this i feel like kicking your ass if it were any other film i would have not cared but come on.
