Bill Church sounded much better on bass than the hippy they replaced him with for Paper Money. The Midnight Special footage has the second lineup and its definitely less powerful.
I'll never forget the one time I saw these guys. They opened for KISS at the Forum in L.A. in 1976, just before Sammy went solo. At 16 a buddy and I hitchhiked from Anaheim to L.A. Got lost in East L.A. and walked into a CHP station for directions. Freaked me out because we were carrying a load of purple microdot and fine smoke. The nice officers drew us a map and we eventually made it to the show. KISS was great but Montrose was at the top of their game and stole the show.
mmm 1974....just got my driving license, finished school, got first car, seriously started chasing women....and bought the first Montrose album....life was good!
Ronny Montrose was one of the hottest guitar players of his time but this version of the band (with Sammy Hagar) was only around for one album. We use to wear this album out. The whole album is totally hot. If you like Bad Motor Scooter, track down the whole album and buy it. It cooks all the way through.
how old are you? i saw this when it was broadcast in england you were probably still in your nappies or diapers as you yanks call them. it was not a JAM it was recorded to promote the first album.
Why so hostile? A jam can refer to many different things. For instance when a group of musicians of this caliber get together it JAMS! Relax on the sematics my friend. It rocks plain and simple. Enjoy it!
people need to remember this was a 19 year old SAMMY performing the first song HE ever wrote ! ! i heard it for the first time in 7th grade & it seemed all other bands sucked after that. you can catch SAMMY in his new band CHICKEN FOOT in summer of '09 !! i've heard two songs "soap on a roap" & "down the drain" & my nipples were harder than chines algebra !!
Ummm....for all you kids: this is the original lineup of Montrose. Carmassi, Church, Sammy and Ronnie. Along with "Rock Candy", their signature tune from the 1st album. Yes, even more so than Space Station #5 and Rock the Nation.
That dude can sing. Hey wait a minute. Ain't that Sammy flocking Hagar? Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. Ronnie Montrose was with Edgar Winter when they wrote the rock masterpiece "Frankenstein."
first heard this band when my mates bought me the Warner Bros. compilation back in '74 (I was 13). It had Tower of Power, Little Feat, Graham Central Station and, of course, Montrose, among others. It was only 59p (the cheap bastards) What would I give for a copy of that album now!!
Incredible! What Sammy did for this band!... and what he did to Van Halen - go figure. I wish Motrose could have continued. One of the most high powered & exciting bands that so few kew about.
yeah he does, it's eerie how closely he resembles Sammy, although the singer in this band went on to have a GREAT solo career singing and playing guitar and from there he went on to sing and play for some 70's/80's band.......I can't recall the name off hand though.
Now *THAT* rocked. And I have to say, Sammy's hair looked pretty great. Shame about the high-waisty Oxford bag things he's wearing.
