Spartan isn't the best, they are very weak beceause they cost too much and you can replenish them only in Sparta and Syracuse.
Heavy hoplite is better, when I play Greece I always conquer Rome using heavy hoplite, they have the same stats as best roman infantry before the reform.
BTW when it comes to play Greece against Scytia...is god damn fail Greek has no cavarly at all.

your main flaw was simple. you put ur troop at the incline of the bottom of the hil. giving parthian inf the hill advantage. which makes them at least twice as effective as they normally would.
this is by no means a fair match of units. the Spartans are one of the best units in this game and the Persian infantry without a doubt the worst. if you really want to put Persia to the test in this game, you will have to use their armoured horse archers. they are the best unit of their kind in the game. i could defeat that formation easily with nothing but archers and minimum infantry.
@animewarrior3 you are right. i think the exotic unit Parthia has is some kind of an armoured camel. Cataphract Camels i think it was. i don't remember these units very well, i haven't plaid the game for years. but they do have Persian Cavalry which is some sort of medium horse archers. and they also have the Cataphracts, which every other eastern faction has in the game. if they ever make Rome 2, i suggest they pay more attention to Parthia. after all Rome defeated all but the Parthians.
I use this tactic myself but I never use archers. I use cavalry for mop up duty after they run away, and there is no danger. So I only need about 2 units of cavalry. But you lost this battle because your lines were too thin. I have killed over 4000 Romans (Bruti) with only 5 units of Spartans. Also works in defense of a city. Find a few choke points to defend the plaza and they will never win. Also if they only have one or two ways in a good supply of highly trained phalanxes never lose.
Good strategy, and genius idea with putting the phalanxes up agains the edge of the map, so they don't get flanked, but you need other, thicker phalanxes to beat those cataphracts.... either that or send out your calvary earlier to eliminate them
you could of won this battle if you act quickly at 2min of that u should of send more troops in the middle knowing that its loosing little by little but you send the army to the middle too late and also you should of use the cavalry as your advantage knowing that they are fleeing.
Oh cmon, gold vet spartans dont need any commanding. Just let them sit there and they decimate even elephants! Theres a reason why they cost 11,000 to make them in a custom match.
You should have withdrew cav and archers and put all of the spartan hoplites in the corner very densly, that way their cav wouldnt get through. (they got in through the gaps in your line)

ok your use of the spartans is good and all if your pinned against the end of the map but if i was playing you i would just sit back with archers and take out all of your archers then pick of your spartans and what do you do if you are in the middle of the map or attacking then what would you do
spartans rape in general, i've managed to hold a large city without walls with just spartan hoplites against 7 hard roman armies (mixture of spqr and the 3 famalies). basicly i funneled them in the streets where i used the spartans as a blockade (since there are 2 main roads in the large city that lead into the sqaure, i used 10 units for each of the 2 roads). the kills were over 11,000; whilst casoulties were under 200 . it was a pretty simple wait and see type of thing
You also stretched the phalanx too far.... no wonder you lost, theres like 2-3 rows of men, phalanxes are meant to be used with 5-6-7 rows of men in them, so if one falls, the guy behind him keeps the spear wall pointy. Its hard for cavalry to break through 7 rows of soldiers, due to the sheer amount of spears and manpower, while two roes is nothing, not enough men, not enough spears, not enough power.
Those are not tactics, thats just cornercamping with units that are Fully upgraded and fully promoted, talk about crap. Try that online and i would just bombard your general and archers with Heavy onagers. And if you came out and attacked my forces,i would let you take the front row then bring round the back and basically divide and conquer your armies piecemeal.
There is a way to beat the spearmen in Rome Total War (any of them, including Spartan Hoplites). You just have to attack different flanks if you can send your cavarly behing the flanges they are dead for sure, other way is to send archers first and kill anything they can, then back and send your melee units and then fire another round of arrows.
@cmorenor89 Thats why you have 2-3 rows of troops, to stop your cavalry from getting round, Phalanxes are the best units in the game when used properly. i generally have the flanks in non phalanx mode to make the troops more flexible. i then send in cavalry to harrow the archers while the main infantry force is in combat with my infantry. I also tend to use skirmishers to their full potential when possible to annoy your forces :P. Flanks are used waaaay too much by the AI.
i got a video with 2000 men vs 12000 enemy's wich have some elephants without lag can some gyes watch it it is really cool the enemy has legonaires and some normal persian units and archers and stuff they dont have worse units theyre upgraded and it was played on hard mode i also got a greek campaign of 43 parts and it stil contineus i concoured rome im now defeating egypt so if you want total war series on youtube watch my videos please!!
corner campers are easy to take down with 2-3 arty units, and some missile units. dimms down the forces, so you can creat a weak spot in thier flanks, thuse destroy it with elite units allowing the more basic units to creep in. either that or the germanian beserkers put a decent hole in thier defence.

Sadly having played the game since release and having been in the Sith clan for four years i know that CWB rules do not allow artillery units, any non rush army should have at least 6 GG archers, and that elephants can be knocked out with a volley or two of flaming arrows. Berserkers are not a good unit to use against a corner camper at all and a three year old can figure out that elite units are required. Luckily only spartans can beat catas, and theyre too expensive at 15 K.
@SithDarthMax member his spartans are upgraded, catas and berserkers can get rid of them head on that is if you a messed up warlord/king and don't value their lives
@lordarchron Sadly arty isnt allowed on clan and tournament rules. Catas do not kill upgraded spartans. thats the only spear unit that can put a dent in cats without the Backspace+Alt attack trick.
a zerk wont dent a phalanx. A volley or three from a Gold gold archer will amok elephants. If you really want to fuck a phalanx, charge it with a gold gold urban, give a run order behind the phalanx and watch em run trough the spears.
I actually quite enjoyed that though I must say it may have gone differently if you'd had most your troops in the first line and had your formations deeper, with melee deeper is always better, and I approve of the corner tactic, how else can you show Spartan's at their best without something resembling the hot gates.
People need to research before they say anything if they did they would find that Spartan's, like other Greek Hoplites used archers. They may not have been spartan's themselves but their armies had them none the less.
Don't really know myself which are the best in the game but the archer's in the video, the Greek mercenary ones are very good, and the Macedonian archer's are good as well. The Greek and Macedonian archer's are my favorite to use and they seem to be the better ones in the game.
if u had 3 units of spartans which werent upgraded and werent in the corner and fought against parthia and won, that would be inpressive but wat u did was lame...

The Spartans THEMSELVES will never BE an archer (because of their prejudices about being a macho and stuff) but if allies from other Greek cities, or any non-Spartan contingent, will provide archers then they would use them. The only thing that a Spartan would not want is a Spartan archer.
this tactics is gay it ruins the game...its practically a box formation. if it had a army i could break that easy man you simply hold you rcavalry back with some infatry and focus most your infatry at a certain point. the line wont hold even with reserves. you will be forced to either give up your flanks to aid your centre or your centre or wherever im attacking crumbles. if you aid then i use my cav to flank your men along with infantry support easy win
if i were playing as parthia in this battle and i had archers i would target as many units as possible with ym archers and fire until they all ran outta ammo then used all my infantry and focused them all on one part of there line and use sheer numbers to break through . :)

Outcome is after few battles you have no army and you lose.
But Heave hoplites need 3 tier of infantry building so when you capture 3 level or bigger city it is there usually.

corner campers are easy to take down with 2-3 arty units, and some missile units. dimms down the forces, so you can creat a weak spot in thier flanks, thuse destroy it with elite units allowing the more basic units to creep in. either that or the germanian beserkers put a decent hole in thier defence.
as long as they're not elephant spammers...i seriously hate elephants

Sadly having played the game since release and having been in the Sith clan for four years i know that CWB rules do not allow artillery units, any non rush army should have at least 6 GG archers, and that elephants can be knocked out with a volley or two of flaming arrows. Berserkers are not a good unit to use against a corner camper at all and a three year old can figure out that elite units are required. Luckily only spartans can beat catas, and theyre too expensive at 15 K.

@lordarchron Sadly arty isnt allowed on clan and tournament rules. Catas do not kill upgraded spartans. thats the only spear unit that can put a dent in cats without the Backspace+Alt attack trick.
a zerk wont dent a phalanx. A volley or three from a Gold gold archer will amok elephants. If you really want to fuck a phalanx, charge it with a gold gold urban, give a run order behind the phalanx and watch em run trough the spears.

I actually quite enjoyed that though I must say it may have gone differently if you'd had most your troops in the first line and had your formations deeper, with melee deeper is always better, and I approve of the corner tactic, how else can you show Spartan's at their best without something resembling the hot gates.

People need to research before they say anything if they did they would find that Spartan's, like other Greek Hoplites used archers. They may not have been spartan's themselves but their armies had them none the less.

Don't really know myself which are the best in the game but the archer's in the video, the Greek mercenary ones are very good, and the Macedonian archer's are good as well. The Greek and Macedonian archer's are my favorite to use and they seem to be the better ones in the game.

Spartans did NOT have archers, just like they didn't have walls on the city of sparta. They relied on their men and also brought greeks allies and some helots to the fights. And I'm not based on the 300!

Because of their phalanx formation, technique and good armour and broad shields they could withstand any volley of arrows any enemy might shoot at them without any serious loses. No, Don't be foolish. Spartan army had archers. They weren't the Spartan elite but the ones who were half citizens. They also had allies that ofcourse used archers. Just 'cause a Holywood movie says that Leonidas hated archers doesn't mean he didn't see their use.

The Spartans THEMSELVES will never BE an archer (because of their prejudices about being a macho and stuff) but if allies from other Greek cities, or any non-Spartan contingent, will provide archers then they would use them. The only thing that a Spartan would not want is a Spartan archer.

this tactics is gay it ruins the game...its practically a box formation. if it had a army i could break that easy man you simply hold you rcavalry back with some infatry and focus most your infatry at a certain point. the line wont hold even with reserves. you will be forced to either give up your flanks to aid your centre or your centre or wherever im attacking crumbles. if you aid then i use my cav to flank your men along with infantry support easy win

if i were playing as parthia in this battle and i had archers i would target as many units as possible with ym archers and fire until they all ran outta ammo then used all my infantry and focused them all on one part of there line and use sheer numbers to break through . :)
