Actually many countries have this sort of setup - A civil marriage seperate from a church marriage. I was originally married in a civil "registry" marriage overseas and later my spouse and I married in our church here in a church wedding. I'm not a supporter of gay marriage but I do agree that the government should get out of the marriage business - I am sort of a libertarian when it comes to that and a lot of other things. People who are married have kids and use these benefits to better care for children, supporting a family and raising kids. If these benefits were given to familys with a certain grown up to kids ratio it would cover a broader sector of government. Let me say first that i DO NOT hate gay or lesbian people. Marriage first started out somewhere in the bible and it started between a man and a women. So the word marriage was meant for men and women who join together. If the gay and lesbian community want to be together they need to find a different word and not try to call it marriage. This is like me deciding to put cheese and pepperoni on a salad and call it pizza. Saying that we have cheese and pepperoni so it has to be pizza. not true

Yes the first marriage is in the bible: Adam and Eve, but your statement is a bit misleading because marriage predates the Bible, Christianity, and Judaism.

1. There is no real connection between marriage and procreative abilities. Do you deny infertile couples their equality too? Marriage has zero correlation to either intention or ability to procreate.
2. Gay marriage would not decrease the numbers of children born

Really? I LOVE how Professor Dershowitz generalizes that all those who believe in marriage somehow apply a religious sanctity to it. He's an idiot and an liberal. No gay marriage, no recognizing civil unions. Last I checked the continuation of the human species is dependent on a male and female union. When two guys or two women alone can birth another human being, let me know, and I might be inclined to change my mind. For me, it's not a religious issue, it's a scientific issue.

@Stallex I don't see how it's hard to get how a sterile person cannot produce a child. Same as with people who have sex while under the protection of birth control pills, condoms, etc. I never said that marriage had anything to do with procreation, you made that relationship by saying that same sex couples should not be allowed to marry because they are not able to produce a child.

yep. i agree i think. not so sure about the hubalanonsense that went over my head. but ive always said. if gay people want to get married then let them. if john doe finds gay marriage repulsive, then he doesn't have to marry a gay person. i don't see how in the world my gay uncle getting married would possibly harm my bible huggin best friend. how bout them apples. nice n simple.

Actually many countries have this sort of setup - A civil marriage seperate from a church marriage. I was originally married in a civil "registry" marriage overseas and later my spouse and I married in our church here in a church wedding. I'm not a supporter of gay marriage but I do agree that the government should get out of the marriage business - I am sort of a libertarian when it comes to that and a lot of other things. I am also a Christian BTW. Marriage really should be God and people

This is a damn good idea! I feel that the way religion has such a stranglehold over the idea of marriage is fucking retarded. They say that "Marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a women in concordance with God", and by God of course, they refer to the Christian God. What's wrong with this is that marriage is a key component in any society, regardless of religion. Muslims do it, Jews do it, hell even the ancient Egyptians did it! i'm pretty sure Jesus doesn't own the rights to marriage. ha

If I went one step further, it would be to eliminate civil union along with benefits. If people want to contract, that's OK with me, I'll pay tax money so the state can adjudicate contracts.
But it's for the Children ... Well some of us don't want to raise other peoples children. But that doesn't stop those who do from donating their time and money, They can go hog wild.
