My favorite band, Savage Garden of course, and my favorite athlete Pieter van den Hoogenband (0:36 taking pictures with fans)! And if you know, Ian Thorpe was the one waving Australian flag. One of sweetest memories of 2000 Olympics for me!

Very sad that he's lipsyncing here, you can see how emotive he's being in his actions and gestures, this could have been an epic performance. Instead, it's merely mediocre due to them just playing back the CD :(

@rawtoast the major giveaway was that it's literally exactly the same as how he sounded with the actual single that was released. you'd think they could have at least recorded it twice or something! such a good performance regardless though

@madsb1992 - There is no doubt this was lip synched. I adored this song about 12 years ago when I was a teenager, but hearing this song now, it was probably written for this occasion, it's too PC, it's cheesy, and too over the top with sweetness.

I agree, any of the performers could have used this opportunity, with the whole world watching to say something unwanted or offensive.

Oh my God, it still gives me shivers after so long! I've always loved Olympic ceremonies, but I remember getting up at 5AM that day just to see them (and then I missed the rest of the ceremony because I had to work :( ). It's such a great song, and I was really happy to see them there. Thanks for sharing! :D

Many Olympic performed songs are not live versions. Often, they simply do not have the equipment or the time to get it all set up within the ceremony. Savage Garden is incredible live.

he was lip syncing because they couldnt get any instuments on the stage, plus savage garden were gonna be playing at the closing ceromony from the start, they were half way through a tour so they didn't reherse 1 bit for the show. So when the time came, there band and sound equipment was in europe so they had to lip sync.

I heard that all the performances were lip sung in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. I think it was something to do with the organisers wanting the whole damn thing to be perfect or something.

Yep he's definately lip-syncing, because he usually adds bits in to his songs when he sings live.. i'm sure I've heard somewhere that he couldn't sing that night because he had a throat infection or sumthin like that. :( Ah well that's the only time i've heard of him ever lip-syncing!
