  • They should somehow add a turbo charger to that. How cool would that be.

  • Awesome shot with helicopter and ole 844! We live on the UP mainline in Ne. Love to see her go by.

  • Almost all of today's machines have no soul (cars, trains, planes).Very nice video.Greeting from Serbia.

  • WOW AMAZING

  • thats sick man. Its older than My Grandma.

  • diesel electric was pushing it....bs!!!!

  • @ehle The Diesel is along as a backup in case of a breakdown. I assure you #844 was the one doing the work and making time.

  • Black smoke! Steam shooting from the whistle! Rods flashing! Drivers spinning, and the train hauling ass! Life is good. This is the railroad equivalent of a Bach contata.

  • @ehle The diesel is there for dynamic braking and as a back up....

  • @msbeard What a bummer. It was sertainly affective.

  • I'm putting my money on the 484

  • Looks like Lynn Nystrom firing in the vid. Sure do miss him..

I remember the first time I got to see the 844, my son got to ride a train it was heading up from KC to Topeka a couple years back. Video does not do it justice, it truely is a thing of beauty...

  • Watching this video gives me cause for sadness. Locomtoives like number 844 once roamed this country hauling everything and anything, and were run by men who took a lot of pride in what they did.

What is saddening is that the USA seems have lost the "can-do" attitude and industrial might that not only made it possible to build such a fantastic machine like this but to *mass produce* it. Sad!

  • Thumbs up if you think 844 is the real Master of the Railway

  • ANOTHER AWARD WINNING VIDEO SKIP

  • @msbeard Which is sad :(

  • Can I assume the fireman was making smoke to look cool for the camera? Also love the 844 and the old car together at 2:35!

  • So I've seen the 844 in person as it came into the rail yard in Denver. My question is why is there a diesel in the line? Is it providing electrical or braking power?

  • @thomaslobbes I believe it's along in case the 844 breaks down.

  • all the black smoke an polution is really attractive NOT !

  • Looks like the pilot is a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine...

  • Epic stuff.

Now, who are the four people who actually DISLIKED this video?

  • @RickyJ46 I actually clicked a response one time and hit the dislike, mistakenly. I don't think you can recall your vote.

Indeed anyone who doesn't appreciate this locomotive and video needs therapy.

  • @RickyJ46= They're communists.

  • Skip: your videos are great. I catch myself watching them over and over again. Cant get enough of the trains.

  • what a beautifull piece of machinery! its a shame they cant reserect those good old iron horses!put the country back to work again building them. natural gas as fuel to heat the boiler!cleaner.

  • Thats Not a Race!! Thats a Damn Chopper ruining someones video

  • The quality of a very well built piece of machinery that will outlast most creatures and that fire that burns within it's belly reminds me of the flames that got us to where we are today. Oh, the Helicopter is pretty damn cool, also. Lest we forget about that technology. Foxx, out. =^.^= P.S. note follows...

  • Why, oh WHY? I keep asking myself, do I have this bug about Live Steam Engines? I cry and tear up like I've met an old friend whenever I even get close to locomotives. So far to the point that they make more joy for me than people or animals (you know, biological living beings). It's not madness, it couldn't be a defect with my Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid; it is just the way I am. I like that about people and equipment. There is something "Alive" between our differences; Man and Machine.

  • @crissmind263 10-4 that dude was stoked on steam for sure!

  • @msbeard dont forget to metion cost of maintenance not of fuel. oil or coal, and they could run on methane or propane if somebody tried the idea

  • Awesome. The helper locomotive is a DD-40X.

  • @itnbfzi i thought that was a DD-40.

  • @DarkHorseLeather UP lists it as a DD40X. Go to their historical diesel locomotives page.

  • The UP 844 is still listed on the Union Pacific's active locomotive roster. She has never been retired.

  • @itnbfzi where can i find this roster? id like2 know what seam engines are active

    plz reply asap

  • @coolnerd92 Go to the excursions page at the UP website

  • Watching these vids and seeing these works of art up close, you should take a minute and remember the men who disigned them and the great men who built them, they are true heros of Amercia.

  • that is one BEAUTIUL ENGINE!!!!!

  • Magnificent! All the parts working in unison to create a wonderful, fluid monster!

  • yes it is

  • whats her topspeed?? 65-70??

    safe top speed that is

  • @mbtech2003 There's video on YouTube of her doing 79 MPH. She has been up to 103 MPH when she was newer

  • How much horsepower is the UP#844?

  • 6936 too, WOW what a treat, wished I had seen that up close.

  • Extreme video

  • If only 844 didn't have elephant ears (smoke deflectors) personally.

  • I like them!

  • Steam, smoke, and drivers in rythymn. Iron poetry.

  • cool! 844 and 6936!

  • Perfect smoke color! Really got her cookin'!

  • Nice camerawork there ! Thanks !!

  • lovin that old car, it was perfect!!!

  • Really enjoyed it, thanks for posting!

  • that old car kind of made it look old

  • Another reason the the maintenance costs for the 844 and 3985 aren't an issue is because there are only two steamers and not an entire yard full of them.

  • We had a UP railline going through my neighborhood when I was a boy. The whole ground would shake when the big UP passenger locos came through! All gone now, UP R/W is now a trolley line.

  • This video is awesome. I know this steamer can hit 120mph w/o a sweat.

  • Normally I'd say I'd want to be on the train but man I'd have loved to ride that car with you, SkipW... bloody hell, what a sight!

  • Nice pacing shots! You certainly did better than the History Channel ground cameramen; they just tilt the camera at jaunty angles when the train goes by.... you literally have to tilt your head to watch the scenes they shot w/ 844!

Note to the producers of the show: YOU'RE SHOOTING A DOCUMENTARY, NOT AN MTV MUSIC VIDEO!

  • Great Video!

one point though, it wasn't much of a race. After all, the guy filming this was in the back seat of a 1964 Ford Falcon.

  • Great video 5*

  • Q MIERDA ES ESTO

    ''???????????

  • Why didn't you also get the rare DD40 X diesel and the water tank in front of it, those are some extreme rare mega machines!!!!!

  • Sure hope they stop and grease those rods once in a while! J/K, what an awesome chunk of machinery!

  • Skip, how do you get away with 16 minutes!? They only let me put up 10.

  • stop stalking everyone, the lambo, the ferrari, the maserati, the bentley even the train!!!! damit

  • I might go check this big baddie out in Roseville CA. today!

  • I caught this steam engine today in Stockton CA! :3

  • I'm so jealous! I live in California, but I'm at college in NY. My luck... I go home soon, too. Why couldnt the 844 come a few weeks later? Or school got out earlier! :)

  • Could the 844 beat the current speed record for steam locomotives? Currently held by the British locomotive Blue Mallard at 126mph

  • Yes. And it and its sisters did. But unofficially. The UPRR did not want that kind of publicity, so none of that was ever made official..

  • Yes, who ever does the History program.

  • The maintenance must be a real pain.

  • That is why they are no longer in general service. Maintenance takes many people of many arts and crafts. Maintenance costs for all stem would be through the roof! But as for 844 / 3985, because of what they represent, maintenance costs, no matter how high, are not considered a problem.

  • She is a beauty,I also enjoy watching the MW Rd261 on here too. :)

  • Too bad it spews a lot of soot and CO2, otherwise I will love to ride steam trains everywhere.

  • Note that the engine runs on recycled engine oil. That may mean air pollution, but it also means thousands of gallons of oil saved from polluting our waterways.

  • note that if the helicopter had to carry the same load as the train did during the race, that they might as well have sent a woman or all women to the moon.

  • Your mind has been co-opted by Green Fascism. You are the equivalent of a Leninist Useful Idiot. The "soot" is generally mostly carbon and falls on the soil to enrich it with that and some other minerals that come with it. If they are cleaning the flues with a fine sand; same effect re minerals. And there is no real scientific evidence that human "caused" CO2 or any other "greenhouse gas" "created" by human activity has any appreciable effect on the world's climate at all. TRY THE SUN!

  • So you don't mind we build six coal fire power plants next to your house. The CO2 will definite help your garden to grow tomatoes.

  • You also forgot to mention that the bulk of that smoke comming out is steam. Not to mention steam locomotives are far more effecient burners of their fuel. They burn the fuel at extremely high temps at very low pressure, which results in much more complete combustion of the fuel, and because of the higher temps, also greater fuel economy.

  • That why steam trains explode from high pressure, because they don't have enough water? or in one day #190 at Tweetsie Railroad can go through 3 and a half tons of coal? I like steam train alot, but they definitly are not better on the fuel economy.

  • Yes, 99.99% of boiler explosions were caused because of a lack of water covering the crown sheet in the boiler.

  • exactly.

  • @chirock02 : Your comment is a typical "Green Nazi", 'save the whales and Earth, knee jerk, liberal, tree hugger, activist response. Can you not enjoy the primal things in life we are privileged to enjoy? Get a life!!

  • Boy Howdy!

  • Amazing. The picture is so smooth.

  • Yes Virginia, we actually had high speed rail in this country.

  • very nice view!

po prostu piękne, żeby nasza Helenka, czy petucha miały takie miejsce by się rozbujać...

  • The 844 and Challenger are both absolutely amazing to see on video. I'm drooling at the chance to see them in person.

  • She's 65 years old. Built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in Schenectady NY in 1944.

  • this beautiful old gal can seriously haul a55 - fantastic. How old is she out of curiosity ?

  • how fast was it goin and do you think it could run on the Northeast Corridor and keep up wit traffic

  • Nice! I saw the episode on DVD and it's great. Even though Matt's a little 'over-the-top.'

  • That was so impressive! , thanks heaps for sharing.Whether car or helicopter they all have alot of trouble keeping up with that beautiful piece of engineering marvel.

    Hope to see more.

    Daniel :)

  • Did you ever think of getting on tv?

  • Skip, watched it Tuesday nght. Which one of the may cars were you trying to keep up with the old lady?

  • Wow. This is an incredible and overly entertaining video. I watched the entire video -- you did a great job! And I laughed when you were " slowing down for the cops"! That was perfect! Very well done!!

    Jim

  • Let's hope Union Pacific keeps 844 and 3985 running for years to come. Kudos to the UP for being the only Class 1 railroad left with an active steam program. Simply fantastic!

  • pravo - that's not true - Canadian Pacific has the Empress 2816 - search youtube to see that beautiful old gal ;-)

  • I am so speechless about this train. WOW.

  • Absolutely outstanding

  • I'm just plain speechless right now. That first clip gives you a feeling I don't think anybody can explain. While the sheer power of the steam engine is seen on the outside by many, nobody gets to see what's underneath this extraordinary beast! This is favorited and if I could this video would get 1,000 stars!

  • Awesome footage! I am watching the History Channel's show about this right now! 5***** Video!

  • Anyone know if that DD-40 was under power or not? 844 has plenty of power to deadhead the DD-40, but I'd be curious to know if one of the Centennials has been restored to service.

  • And it is dead in train, although it can run fine itself. Legacy equipment all a part of the show.

  • how fast is she going?

  • around 70

  • Genial 5 Stars

  • Skip, you did it again. They will not have the sound like you have. Greetings from the UK.

  • nothing like train chasing. I can't wait til the next show either.

  • Fantastic, thanks for posting!

  • Its no History channel air cam, but for others who couldnt make it out for this, a little home movie might hold you over till you can. the morning runs are tough because your shooting into a rising sun at 8 am

  • Thanks again.

What did you use to mount the camera on? I do some train chasing too and would love to have one of those. Does it mount on the side window glass?

  • Steam locomotives are the manliest machines ever invented.

God knows how many tons this thing is, yet it runs as smoothly as a sewing machine.

  • I agree. Yet we call them "Her/She" don't we.

  • its just shy of 500 tons, like around 950,000 pounds +/-

  • Great video - I've chased the Post Train on this run many times.

Did you see my video as it came into Cheyenne with the HC helicopter hovering above it?

  • those were some great shots you have over there zephyr! but lets get us a cam in the air for next year-LOL

  • Iluveit

    =)

  • Was this the day we met?

  • think is was sunday we met when it stoped on the north side of Greeley for a passing freight on the return to Cheyenne, this was on saturday when it had a green signal straight to Cheyenne from Greeley

  • UAU!!!

    Fantástico!!!

  • That show has some great Helicopter shots, interesting to see how they get them. Your a brave man for putting your camera under the 844 though, I saw steam, water, and other things dripping from the loco and the cars!

  • It seems as most of the liquids dropping off the passanger consist is the condisation off the Airconditinor's mounted under the right side so if you keep the cam just left of center and avoid a locomotive discharge it might work out Also I wouldnt push much more than even with top of rail for cam clearence

  • how fast were you going?

  • never faster than 70 mph mostly in the 60's when its upto speed
